    Summary:
    1. Read over the lines a few times
    2. Write down the first letter of each word
    3. Read it using first letters only
    4. Try it from memory
    Good luck! :)

    It’s a form of encoding specificity called transport-appropriate processing. Essentially, if the context during retrieval matches the context during memorization, it maximizes your rate of recall. In this case the first letters are cognitive cues that instantly link to your memory storage and pulls the info to your working memory.

    This isn’t just great for learning lines initially, it’s also amazing if you haven’t reviewed lines in a while. I’m talking weeks, months, years, even. You’re able to remember it so quickly just by reading over the text and then the letters, even if it’s been forever. Lifesaver!

  • @SpinningSandwich
    @SpinningSandwich Год назад +68

    This makes a lot of sense thru the lens of linguistic psychology. We process language differently when reading/listening/writing/speaking, and the first steps here involve reading, writing, and speaking. (It's important to speak the lines aloud!) The next layer is that we tend to process first letters/sounds more than the middle bits, so isolating the first letters serves as both a shorter mnemonic and as an additional way to process of the words. I'm sure someone working in the field could break it down further, but this jives with all the language learning science I've come across.

    My dad taught me this method 27 years ago. I had to memorize Bible passages every week at school and I would use this technique exactly. As I said the passage i would rewrite the first letters as I went over and over. When test time came I had a visual in mind when I had to write out the passage. By high-school we had chapters at a time.

    You can apply this to basically everything and elevate of it.
    I learned a technique myself which helped me both memorize and spend little to no time on studying.
    Over a 3 week period of 40 hours lessons i would spend 10 hours of those actually studying; and have 30 hours doing whatever i wanted.
    - 7 hours went towards through going reading through the chapter and gathering all material i needed
    - 1 hour at the end of the first week (friday) going over all the material
    - 1.5 hours over 2 week period were spent reading through all material to keep it fresh
    - 30 minutes were spent right before the test, quickly reading through everything and seeing how well me and my friend could keep a dialogue and motivate our reasoning on the questions
    The Process
    1. Listen to the teacher during the powerpoint Presentation
    2. What the teacher just did, try it practically
    3. Read the a chapter, go through what you just read in your mind.
    4. Write down Key points of what you read
    5. Make up questions on situations where it can be applied
    6. Repeat until you are at the end
    7. Write down Facts/definitions in simple form
    8. Before a test Go through the Fact/definitions.
    9. There should be little to none difficulty in answering the questions.
    Bonus: For every question, make up a situation where the answer could be applied.
    Example;
    Question: How often does a car need Maintenance?
    Answer: Every 8-12 Months is a procedual checkup
    Example. The recommendations are 8-12 Months, but it varies *depending* on the *age of the car and millage*. Natural events can also be a benefactor, living close to the sea or in a area where sea salt is a common occurence can speed up the process of rust and deoxidation of the metal, prompting for Maintenance far more often than reguarly... yada yada yada.
    Just simply providing the answer will land you a decent/good grade
    Providing a nuanced case will make you seem interested in the subject and knowledgable, It's important to split the two, as the teacher first want to see if you know the answer, then if they are interested, read the case and see you are very knowledgable.

      I like your method. But I’m not sure how it would apply to certain fields. For example, I’m an electrical engineering graduate and not sure how to adapt your method into circuit analyses and other various mathematical analyses and assessments. I think this would work well in other fields where concepts, facts, information and details define one’s expertise on a given subject (eg biology, history, etc).
      Would love to hear any suggestions on methods for memorizing /familiarity on evaluation of less-concrete methods of demonstrating knowledge. I do see it could be helpful in accessing steps needed for mathematical evaluation. But even then…
      🤓

    • @marcuspvxea
      @marcuspvxea Год назад +9

      @@lauren8420 It can be used to a certain extent
      The method i mentioned is for classes from Kindergarten up to college/Highschool and subjects such as you mentioned "other fields where concepts, facts, information and details define one’s expertise on a given subject (eg biology, history, etc). "
      It becomes quite the difference when you advance to subjects such as PHD, Engineering, Juridical science.
      But one example i would provide for a Analysis is to state the numerous of facts based on your results and other factual criterias. Then once that has been provided you start arguing the resulsts and possibilities, this could be if something had a specific impact or benefited to the outcome.
      One great example is math, there is a infinity ways to approach a problem, Let's say the question wants you to achive the number 2, the most simple way here is to do 1 + 1, but you can do 1-3 or 10/5 however the correct answer there would be that there is a infinite ways to achive the number 2, you provided the most simple form of achiving the answer and then provided additonal equations to reach said same answer, but ultimately you proved the most important answer, there is a infinite ways of achiving the number 2.
      Which is on the same level of a Analysis, while a question stating "Achive the number 2 using multiplication through through simple form" the answer they seek for here is very specific and limited and is usually how school is designed up to highschool and college.
      In my opinion to demonstrating knowledge is showing how you are dependable in a unexpected situation that arised and not afraid of questioning yourself and your results and making it clear this is your way of achiving said results but it's not the only one. Wisdom plays a big role here as well as someone who is very knowledgeble should be wise

      I was thinking something similar as Johnny Doe, but gave it a try with the 'I' chapter of Eunoia, which features more than one level of extreme internal alliteration:
      www.poetryinvoice.com/poems/chapter-i
      The compression of 'i' sounds does make it more challenging, but not when I broke it down to smaller chunks.
      I'm going to play around with it more, but it's obvious already that it will create a fun advantage for, shall we say, "natural language." I'm just starting with 200kg on the bench for fun during the initial test.
      Next stop Shakespeare. In the meantime, thanks for this ultra-cool tip! :)

    You showed the paper on the screen in min 4:22 and I literally said it!! I struggled, but one tip: TRY not to look immediately to the source text. Think about it, give your brain time. If you get stuck, try to match other sequences of the letters from the visual images you created and map those, then from the beginning again. After a few mins, I was able to reconstruct the entire line.
    Disclaimer: I am English-Spanish interpreter. I literally get paid to memorize what people say in one language to repeat it back into the target language, so I guess I came with practice. But it works! I intuitively used this technique at work writing a few key words or symbols that I know will be the element I need to reconstruct the rest of the message.

    Thanks dude, I have a photographic memory, and it’s crazy because I could tell you what side of the page in a book a specific quote is on, and I’m learning disabled, but what I realized all watching your video is the best way for people to learn memorization skills is to watch videos of songs they like or read poems they like, and after a while, they’ll be sitting there reciting their favorite song and poem without it being in front of them. I don’t know if that’ll work for anyone, but it surely works for me. There’s always a way, but you have to find the best way for you, and if you pay attention, you will realize what it is.💜

      Or alternatively, your subconscious mind absorbs the data and then that is what your accessing as you recount it, your conciousness mind which has a tendency to wander is focused/distracted by concentrating on the letters and punctuation. Distraction of the conciousness mind so your subconscious mind can do it's stuff is extremely powerful technique. It's mind control/hypnotism 😋 still only short term though. This underlying technique is employed quite abit, for a wide variety of purposes. It's quite well known in some circles

    Once you can look at the first letters, captilization, & punctuation without errors, THEN, starting at the LAST letter, do the words BACKWARDS!
    When you can recall all the words backwards, you have memorized the text. You may not TRUST that you have, but you have! You own it, literally forward & backward. Works great, regardless of the length or complexity of the text. (Makes people think you are smarter than you actually are, which is generally a good thing...)
