I am a braille teacher with 42 years experience. Great video! I will use it for my students. One small correction, though. A cell by definition is a 3 by 2 rectangle with 6 dots. W is dots (not cells) 2 4 5 6. It is one cell. W points west. That is my only improvement. Everything else is correct.
This actually means a lot. My brother is blind, so I learned braille as a kid to help him out. And finding out people is really interested in learning braille to help other people makes me really proud . :)

Something that’s slightly related: the letters in the word EJOTY are the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, and 25th in the alphabet, so you can use that little mnemonic word to help you determine what number any letter in the alphabet is.

I self taught in elementary. A is alpha, always on top. B is beta 2 and below. C is CEE with two Es. D is pointing Right and F is pointing Left. E is diagonal Left, and I is diagonal Right. G is gangster in a group of four. H is a mirrored J, and J is J. K are snake eyes. L is lowercase L. M is two dots top, one dot below, mirrored with U. N is Arrow Pointing Right Up, and Z is Right Down. O is omega inside the triad. P is an upside down V. Q is literally P. R is R in dot form, and W is mirrored. S is an unfinished R. T is Tetris. X is connecting line dots. Y is a C that’s almost like an E.
I can't believe I just learned Braille. Wtf. Your method with the apple and bat, etc I memorized the entire story almost immediately, and then since braille is super intuitive I got the rest quickly. Thank you Nelson. This is incredible. I immediately went and looked up a site for braille tests, and I started at 77%, then 88% and then 100%. This is so awesome.
Great explanation, I remember learning Braille in elementary school because we had a blind student and since we were kids we all picked it up in a matter of days. Much harder as an adult of course. I totally forgot about the patterns, but your method really helps!
I often do "hunt puzzles", where one of the steps is some cipher such as braille. I've always had to look it up; this was really helpful in memorizing it!
Just downloaded the Braille Academy app and did levels 1-5 fairly easily thanks to this video and the helpful reference notes in one of the other comments. Most of my mistakes so far have simply been my brain being too quick on the trigger Eg. sometimes going ‘Bee!’ instead of getting to the next bit with ‘Bee LoVe’ and entering L or V instead. So even when I make mistakes the foundational knowledge is still solid. I do like that so far the app hasn’t had a timer on things rushing me, which means I can also take my time and reference the video’s comment reference notes when a new letter combo appears. Repeating the key words/references out loud as I enter the answer also helps it stick.
I thought the mnemonic at the beginning was dumb as we know how the alphabet was ordered. But then I realized the genius. I read everything you assigned first try. I just learned Braille in 12 minutes.
I am sighted, and I picked up Braille because I designed an application to read email and web pages over the phone, which was marketed to the blind. I had a Braille documentation book done for my application and got interested in learning Braille from seeing my documentation transcribed. Learning Braille made me realize what it's like to not be fully literate, because I find that I see words one letter at a time in Braille, rather than having them automatically come together real fast when I read print.

Nelson, do you think you could apply this to shorthand? I've always wanted to learn shorthand in order to do very quick journaling, but it seems daunting; and yet, I was quizzing myself a few hours after watching this video, and I was able to remember so much of Braille!
Love how you are taking memory techniques to tackle new skills for fun and learn. I've been wondering, if muscle memory is really brain memory, then; shortcuting initial memory acquisition using memory techniques can leave us with more brain power to focus on practice rather than trying hard to remember what the next step of something is. I think you could demonstrate this by making a video series on acquiring a new skill like piano or guitar or asl but with a buddy who doesn't use memóry techniques. And try to Guage when the skill becomes routine for you VS the friend. You do have a leg up in braille, asl and cubing so maybe piano or flying an fpv drone in acro mode.

Good god, I'm reading Braille. This was super-cool. I got all of the examples, too. Of course, it's a different thing to do it with your fingers instead of your eyes, but it's a great start. This video is incredibly useful.
I found your video to be extremely helpful in the mini videos that I watched while trying to learn braille yours was very easy and helpful to understand thank you I really appreciate it I lost my vision about nine years ago and it has been really difficult although I do still have some vision in one eye I do feel the need to learn braille so again thank you🙏
Good memory trick is to learn this from video then come back to it the next day, see if you can recall it in three days, then come back to it in a week, then comeback to it in a month, each time rewatching the video or whatever memory aids you have made (such as the letter E dots look like a dial pointing to Empty)
Hi I am a new blind and I have learnt TalkBack can I use screen reader on my computer but I was thinking of learning braille as well because you may never know when you will need it and I found you video it is super helpful I just watched it once and I think I have already memorized Braille letters and will watch it a couple of times more to be good at it. i am not a visually impaired person but i just randomly wanted to learn Braille and it was a very efficient way to memorise it.....often while studying i make certain tricks to memorise the formulae and they also feel stupid but the more stupid the trick is you cant forget it easily

B - add another dot under a C - start with a, but add a dot next to it Memorize those three first until its perfect D - add a dot under C on the right E - it's braille A with a diagonal F - it's literally an F without the dash g - it's the F from earlier but with an extra dot. Alternatively, G is fat so it makes a square. H - it's an h I - i and e are in a lot of words (believe, science, and so on). So it's the opposite of e J - it's a j K - k has two halves (top and bottom). But it's one dot top and one dot bottom L - the letter l on the left M - i don't have anything clever. It's just a c with an extra dot N - it's m with an extra dot O - it's the right half of an o P - it's a P Q - it's a backward Q shape (or you can remember G and add a tail) R - it's the pointy part of an R S - a snake T - a Tetris squiggle U - a u shape with chunks pulled out (yeah, so clever) V - same as U but only the right chunks are gone W - reverse of the R (nothing clever) X - a more powerful k (dashes instead of dots) Y - a powerful shape (I simply memorized this one because the shape uses the most of any) Z - a Z with the top left missing

Great idea with the twnnis balls and muffin pan. I also use tennis balls and muffin pan as a problem solving toy fot my dog i hide a small tiny liece of a treat under 3 random tennis balls and he has to rwmove only the tennjs ball that has the treat under it and i use 12 muffin pans thats 72 tennis balls he has to smell to find only 2-4 that has treats under them and he does it very quickly and passed the test the very first time i did it for him. He also like to place the tennjs balls into the muffin oans as well. I know its off subject but i jist wanted to share that for all other dog lwners to try lol

Great idea with the twnnis balls and muffin pan. I also use tennis balls and muffin pan as a problem solving toy fot my dog i hide a small tiny liece of a treat under 3 random tennis balls and he has to rwmove only the tennjs ball that has the treat under it and i use 12 muffin pans thats 72 tennis balls he has to smell to find only 2-4 that has treats under them and he does it very quickly and passed the test the very first time i did it for him. He also like to place the tennjs balls into the muffin oans as well. I know its off subject but i jist wanted to share that for all other dog lwners to try lol

My daughter is not fully blind but she is facing problem seeing anything and recognizing the words boctors says we have no treatment may b she will blind 😢 can anyone tell me how I can teach her really worried about her

This is just the easy part of braille. There is way more to memorize like punctuation and 180 contractions.
