- Talk's Alex Phillips is joined by Fair Fuel UK’s Howard Cox, who says electric cars won’t be popular and “are dangerous”.
A recent study has discovered that pedestrians are at a higher risk of being struck by an electric or hybrid vehicle.
The analysis of road traffic accidents revealed that these types of vehicles are more prone to being involved in collisions with individuals in urban areas.
The study examined a vast amount of data, including 32 billion miles of travel by battery-powered cars and three trillion miles by petrol and diesel cars.
Surprisingly, it was found that electric and hybrid vehicles are twice as likely to hit pedestrians when comparing the distance traveled.
The reasons behind why these environmentally friendly cars are considered more dangerous remain unclear. However, experts suggest that there could be several factors contributing to this increased risk for drivers.

Well the last bus that caught fire was diesel. That was about a week ago in Twickenham.

Whatever happened to pedestrians using their eyes before they cross the road
Most pedestrians use both eyes and ears when crossing the road. In general they're more cautious because of their vulnerability unlike motorists who can often get mentally wrapped inside their steel bubble and assume that there will be no obstacles in their path.
If they used their eyes as intended they would see the oncoming vehicle, and not walk out in front of it. STOP,LOOK, LISTEN, then cross if safe to do so.
So we have to breathe in toxic fumes so that people don’t have to look as they cross the road. How ridiculous is that…
Cars just come flying down the road from nowhere where I live and they are usually way over the speed limits, so when you can't hear them coming either crossing the road becomes very dangerous for pedestrians no matter how careful we are!

Absolute nonsense. I was bumped into years ago by a lexus hybrid suv. I was carrying a delivery and as I stepped off the pavement having checked both ways the driver of the parked car simply pulled away without signalling or looking in front. Luckily it was low speed but still a hefty bump. Had that been a petrol or diesel I would have heard the engine.
Maybe look up from your mobile phone and be aware of your surroundings before attempting to cross the road.

A colleague of mine was waiting between parked cars to cross a road (there were nose to tail cars all along the road) when the car he was behind suddenly and silently reversed breaking his leg. These vehicles should make noise and have reversing alarms.

Anyone who buys an EV needs to do research. Can't understand why anyone would buy one. The risk of fire/explosion would be the 1st thing to put me off let alone devaluatuon due to batteries getting old, charging time, and shear cost. Madness
The official story about the fire at Luton Airport is that it was caused by a diesel land rover. It might seem unlikely but didn't the chief fire officer say so in his statement? Maybe he should be asked why the flames were coming from under the front passenger seat, which coincidently is where the battery is kept in the hybrid version. They claim the car was built the year before the hybrid version came out and that it was just diesel, so you see electric cars are safe and the pedestrians should get their ears syringed and look where they're going
Watching the state of your government and its officials from afar, I wouldn't trust a single "official statement" they put out
Once a large enough percentage of "early adapters" have experienced the enormous repair costs, the limited ability to have these cars serviced, traffic jams caused by people without money pushing their degrading batteries to the absolute limit, very high insurance premiums, cars bricking themselves for either no or nonsensical reasons...and unfortunately stories of entire families being incinerated while just going about their daily lives, the tide will turn hard AGAINST these things, big time.
I'm not speculating here, these are all hard truths associated with the current technology being used in these cars.
The people lying about the issues these cars have, and the ones keeping their heads in the sand, are the worst enemy the EV movement could possibly have. It's almost like a death cult is calling the shots for them.
Recognizing limitations and slow, steady evolution is the way forward...not the clusterfuck currently playing out.
Remove all the tax breaks, subsidy on cars, subsidy on charging, grants, company tax advantages, 0% finance and no one would ever buy one of these hideous turds!

Hitting a pedestrian on a drive in an ICE car is very very unlikely.

Take a look at the data they used.
It's between 2013 and 2017, EVs only barely started around 2011.
So hardly anyone would have had any knowledge or experience of them during the time period the data was analysed.
Lithium iron batteries burn at a temperature of around 2,500 degrees centigrade, and are extremely difficult to extinguish, often being left to burn out. Associated with this will be the massive amount of toxic fumes, and contamination. Just imagine the scenario when the clowns in charge have got their wish, and we are all driving around in battery powered cars. Will any unground car park, multi-story car park, ferry, cross Channel Tunnel etc be safe...... Sheer madness!😜
Few batteries now use lithium. Alll the serious fires in car parks have been from diesels.

Actually statistically fossil fuel cars are 20 times more likely to catch fire than a EV and strangely enough when a fossil fuel car fire catches fire they don't emit fragrances like Jasmine,🤔but toxic gases also .
It's actually a fact that EVs are far safer and less likely to combust in the event of a collision ( I've seen plenty of fossil fuel cars on fire over the years) .
@@steverichmond7142Sorry, not true. Vast majority use standard lithium ion. Sodium ion is used by some but it's inferior in most respects.
I will keep my 2008 Peugeot 4007 diesel , 40 mpg, spacious, comfortable, reliable, and most of all - paid for. We do less that 2K miles per year. To replace it with EV big enough for a wheel chair and a mobility scooter would cost me £300 to £350 per month to be used locally twice a week. It is also very quiet in car parks because it runs on tick-over so I have to be aware that pedestrians will walk into my path because they have not heard the car sneaking up behind them. Changing to EV is not a viable option.
What isn’t mentioned is the rapid acceleration of electric vehicles. Anyone can get one off the line like an F1 car, there’s no stalling, clutch slip, skidding of the tyres, they reach 30mph in a blink of an eye and both pedestrians and cyclists are particularly vulnerable if they are used to the generally slow starts of IC vehicles.
You will not eliminate self driving cars as the UK government wants the control. They want to stop you having (& enjoying) the control to drive.

All SOS equiped cars have geo fencing and geo time built in now. Government wont be able to resist the controll available.
@easyonenow cars have geofencing to collect data for self-driving AI amongst many more. Newer ICE cars have it too. If your new VW throws up a fault the car reports to VW and your nearest dealer to call you. It knows who you are, number, address, where you are and where you've been.

Go to Antwerp in Belgium the port is full of 1,000’s of them because no one wants them.
Ev’s are not the way forwards, we have them over 100 years ago and they didn’t sell then and they are not selling now.
China had 21,000 Ev vehicle fires last year and now they are trying to sell them in the uk. They also use weak metal and are full of very poor workmanship. They lock the doors when in an accident so you cannot get out. They have major software issues.
An if you complain in China they lock the ev remotely turning it into a brick.
So many issues with Ev’s and most don’t even come close to british manufacturing standards. An they want you all to drive around in a death trap on wheels.

The data is from 2013 to 2017.
Hardly any electric vehicles were around then, so:
1/ the noise issue wasn't well known (lack of audio warning for pedestrians).
2/ pedestrians were not aware of vehicles that could be quieter.
2011 is effectively the start date for the first commercial electric vehicles.
The idea that the study is recent is misleading because the data set is old.
I've driven for 46 years now and whilst advances in technology are welcome, the principle of getting from A to B still stands, regardless of how you plan your journey. I use a cycle when I can, a car for when I need to use a car. I don't care about the method of propulsion as long as it's reliable, that is what I really care about. I do so few miles every year, it's immaterial how the car is propelled.
It doesn't matter were you stand on the environment, it's preservation of nature that matters most regarding all life, not just humans. In fact, we have a duty to perform because we ourselves have placed our own importance ahead of life forms that share this beautiful planet with us.
We need to back off and become less of a threat to all life, be less worried about our own future and work to do less environmental damage to the Earth whilst trying to lift people out of poverty. A very tall order and no easy solution is readily available but try we must to find one by working together, not tearing each other apart.

EV manufacturers should redirect their efforts to producing small, cheap, low range city runabouts. They'd still be rich men's toys but they'd get around some of the governments restrictions.
It's coming - that is part of the EV development process.
Chinese manufacturers are already making them but thanks to US and European governments, they want to slap tariffs to make it unaffordable. Funny that a few years ago, EVs are the future and now that Chinese manufacturers are cornering the market, EVs are not the future now and we need a rethink 🤔

Why do you fear an EV fire? All the statistics agree that petrol and diesel cars catch fire at least 20 times more per million cars than EVs. Some studies say it's nearer to 40 times. You should be terrified at getting into a petrol car wit those stats. Add to that that the EV fire stats include skateboards, scooters and e-bikes. And we all know that those dodgy Chinese cheap scooters are a fire risk alone. An EV car fire is extremely rare actually.
Load of bollocks! Decent EVs have low speed sound systems - to warn pedestrians. Decent EVs have ultrasonic sensors, radar & cameras that automatically brake when a pedestrian or cyclist goes in front or behind them when reversing, A typical bullshit anti-EV story

while driving, "zero emissions" from an EV is also bollocks .. when you consider the extra tyre wear that comes from (i) being heavier, and (ii) having more torque. Tyre particulate emissions is made up of multiple toxic substances and is going to prove to be very deleterious to our health
More data needed regarding location. However, a significant proportion of pedestrians have less than optimal hearing. I think that the theory that electric cars are quieter may be overstated because there will still be tyre noise.
The present limited availability of battery capacity and charging stations possibly means that many battery powered vehicles will do most of their driving in urban environments whereas IC powered vehicles do a larger proportion out of town where there's less pedestrian traffic.
In the country, people may add “whistlers” to their vehicle to warn the wildlife that may walk out onto the road…

1:00 According to the official report released Mar 21/24 (i.e., 2 months prior to this video post), the most probable cause of the Luton Airport carpark fire was an electrical fault or a component failure in a DIESEL vehicle that caught fire while in motion, which was confirmed by the vehicle Owner. Furthermore, the diesel vehicle in question had NO electric or hybrid propulsion system. I have seen no, more recent, reports that contradict those findings. It must be England ? Greatest car I own outside of my Porsche 911. Very inexpensive to insure and American registration in $40 per year. No service and maintenance other than changing tires..no more service interval of $500 to $700 per year.

Modern EVs include artificial audio sounds that allow you to here them.
Old EVs didn't have that, which is why the research this video is about is misleading.
Always makes me chuckle all the uproar about EV Batteries losing power over time and being unreliable. Mine has an 8 year warranty which is at least same if not more than most ICE car power plants and if you dyno an ICE engine out of the show room then again after 8 years I guarantee you it will have lost about 15-20% of its power. Hilarious all the rubbish spouted on the web and the vast numbers of gulliable people out there..... EVs are not for everyone yet, fine no problem but to say they are dying is just ROFL.... stupid is as stupid does.

Another thing with the chargers, why not just put your card in to pay? You have to mess about with an app on your phone etc, no signal, no charge. Petrol and diesel just pay there and then and even with, heaven forbid, cash. Is it another big brother watching you thing?

Why doesn’t someone just put some device on wheel or small turbine blades or something on cars that emitt siren type noise or something? Also these blades could capture energy and store in a spare power bank the driver could use/ sell ?

I would love to know where they get this totally made up information. What next EVs all catch fire. Cradle to grave EV are more damaging for the planet. What a total load of utter S**T. And range anxiety and 2hrs charging at motorway services. Lol, 2 hours? How? Why? 18 minutes from 10 to 80% and when charging at home. It costs me less than £5 for over 300 miles. Also I have my fuel station at my home. Every time I go out I have 80% and 250 miles range. I leave at 7am I set it warm up and if a long trip set to charge to 100%. Also I'm not putting people into hospital and killing people, young and old with breathing difficulties. Also Na (Sodium) batteries on the horizon. No digging the planet for salt. One last thing 1000km range is available and prices are falling, also charging times for the Polestar 5 using the DOT battery. 5 to 10 minutes to recharge. Thousands of charge cycles and when the batteries do finally come to and end of their lives in an electric vehicle the battery packs will be used by the grid or home owners to store KW of energy. I pay 6p per kw between midnight and 6 am. Then I switch over to the car at 6am via vehicle to load. I then run my house when I'm home only paying 6p for every KW used. I only pay the 26p when I go out and unplug my car, then it is only to run the fridge and freezer. So yes they might be more expensive but prices are falling all the time and with options like 2 way power supplies. Theses are facts, not just totally made up!

What often isn't discussed are the financial penalties manufacturers and dealerships face for not meeting an enforced sales quota of EVs. The EV market is a UN SDG ideaological political construct propped up by tariffs and public subsidises. The result is a staturated global market via over production, where millions of EVs are left on lots, airfields with no buyers other than corporate and public sector. An ecological scrappage disaster whilst strip mining the earth of minerals in often modern slavery conditions. In reality UK has got to close to net zero as possible. Self flaggelating is simply political virtual signalling whilst killing energy secruity that EVs rely on.
EVs are required to reduce national energy consumption and to decarbonise energy.

The UN doesn't do climate science. The science comes from thousands of independent sources around the world from scientists working in numerous different countries and started 200 years ago when Herschel discovered Infrared radiation.
All cars are scrapped and have to be recycled, EVs are no different and fossil fuels are the biggest user of strip mined minerals. Cobalt is used in fossil fuel refining and new battery technology is using different minerals and chemicals. Batteries have a far greater capacity to change than fossil fuels ever will, plus fossil fuels can only be burnt once.

I thought they were going to introduce a noise element into electric cars so people could hear them coming as in conventional cars. Perhaps quiet was too strong a selling point. Along with electric cars being heavier a kill is therefore more likely . As for AI cars it was obvious years ago that there would be an insurance problem and saying no human will be blamed in an AI car does tend to say the conventional car it destroys will be responsible and by definition the human driver. What insurance rates will apply? If an insurance company can't make a profit they will adjust rates to make a profit. Kind of like politicians saying we will build affordable housing knowing the builder must make a profit in the housing costs of the time and who decides what is "affordable" .

Same old, same old. On this news channell they churned out all the old clichés. All the comments about the electric cars have been answered over the past years. For instance, long before electric cars, petrol cars cought fire, they hit pedestrians. Battery manufacturers are changing and improving, batteries are being made lighter, and some cars are lighter than petro. Yes, China has cought the west with its pants down and is making the best if it. That is free trade. Yes, European car manufacturers should be worried, they are trying to catch up but not making a good job of it. Even this year with new electric cars coming from the likes of Citroen Opel/Vauxhall, etc. They are still not producing the cars the public want and can afford. When a TV programme puts out news on electric cars, they need to back up their claims with facts, mot old arguments that have been debunked.
I don’t get this noise issue with electric cars. Lots of ICE vehicles you cannot hear running. Battery technology has been with us for a while. At some point it’s going to be a game changer. Battery recycling is starting to become profitable. An electric motor is way more efficient than an ICE. You guys sound like Luddites.
Not hard to legislate that all electric cars below a certain speed, say 35 must emit an audible engine type sound.

You do know plenty of EVs can now do 300+ miles and some charge in around 18 minutes, they are also 20 times less likely to catch fire than a fossil fuel car.

Battery exchange already happens. 300 miles is already average. LFP batteries are lighter and don't ignite.

Battery exchange doesn't scale. A motorway service station can fill 100 cars an hour, that needs a huge stock of charged batteries. Yes, it may help early in the morning as the overnight traffic is lower and batteries are available, but this will be depleted as the empties need recharging that runs into the same power limitation as direct charging. The infrastructure costs for charging hundreds of batteries simultaneously to keep up with demand would be prohibitive. It also requires multiple batteries per vehicle as effectively there 1 on the road and 1 on the charger, not good when the battery is the most energy intensive part of an EV's production.
The 300 mile range/lighter are contradictory. High range is only really needed because the public charge network is dire, it's more "charge anxiety" than "range anxiety". Less range allows smaller batteries with less weight and better efficiency, and less recharge time. There is an impact to high mileage users though, as the full cycle rate goes up potentially shortening the battery life (this may be mitigated by future battery chemistry, but what isn't?)
Lowered fire chance, and less toxic chemistries are available, but they have lower energy density. This reduces range, so consumer demand for high range pushes manufacturers to use less stable types. The actual fire chance is low, but the impact is high (as seen in the loss of car ferries). The risks are different to traditional fuel vehicles and not well mitigated (for example, placing a home charger near the dwelling entrance). This will require regulative and infrastructure changes, something that does not fit well with the rushed adoption of EVs. Net-zero has (rightly or wrongly) put the cart before the horse.
When did your battery exchange start I suggested to the manufacturer a long time ago?
I wrote suggestions to the main manufacturers. Vw replied with a brochure, in German , regarding their cars available in Germany. The only country I know is doing R n D in to it is China , which will give them a considerable market lead.🙂

No such thing as net zero...it's an impossible dream especially when all those wind turbines need 1800 litres of oil to operate and that oil has to be changed every 6 to 8 months. Go figure
