Pointless - hardly. Unachievable, well that depends upon resolve. People who believe it's too expensive will be crying the most when their homes are inundated and granny, grandad and grandchildren start expiring when intensely hot summers mean they cannot maintain a body temperature conducive to life. You have been warned but Conservative right wing types will forget this warning in 20 years time. Such people are intellectually incapable of understanding or comprehending the sh*t we are in. Johnson, our illustrious former PM, was a classic example of the impossibility of these people to deal with planet wide emergencies effectively. They simply do not believe our civilisation has to change. They are, of course, dangerously wrong and will imperil all of us.

Al Gore reckoned by 2017 we were done. I believe he manages a fund from a beach front property, so I guess he is not too concerned. The ROC system that Labour introduced didn't put levies on bills, in fact if energy companies actually had installed target levels of renewables there would have not been any extra cost. The scheme benefited companies that fulfilled their obligation and penalised those that didn't. It's the ones that didn't that cost all consumer.
Since then the Tories have changed the system and replaced ROCs with CfDs.
The high bill costs in the last couple of years have been due to gas prices not renewables.
In fact my bill this month is the lowest it's been for 4 years despite more renewables.
This is largely due to stability in the gas supply after years of instability.
Historically fossil fuels have been responsible for major international problems both economic and conflicts, including WWII in which both Germany and Japan sought to secure fossil fuel resources by invasion.
Russia today is using fossil fuels as a weapon and is one of the primary reasons for invading Ukraine for coal, iron ore etc.

China still uses CFCs since they don't care about International law or any treaty bans. They also still do not clean the pollution with scrubbing since Europe and US did since the 70s which put a stop to acid rain. Asian countries get China's acid rain. No one will stop China polluting and something people believe the CC religion can't work out is if renewables were cheaper than fossil fuels why hasn't China transitioned. No. Instead China is still opening massive numbers of coal power plants and they tell us the reason is for cheaper electric. If renewables were cheaper then China would be 100% by now for even better competitive edge with their manufacturing.

Unfortunately Zoe is living in a dream world. We are currently pouring vast amounts of money and resources into this farce and it is making very little difference. Heat pumps are just way too expensive and don't fit our variable climate well or our old poorly insulated housing stock. If only they would have a more rational approach helping people to insulate their homes better rather than subsidising insanely expensive heat pumps. Similarly it would have been better to encourage the use of hybrid vehicles rather than EVs because it is something where the technology is there to actually save people money and at the same time reduce the amount of fossil fuels consumed. This is to say nothing of the fact that even if we could all afford all these green upgrades there aren't enough engineers and technicians to design and install it all and there aren't enough raw materials like copper to make them in the first place.

    • @Twmpa

@@stewartkingsley I already said that in the OP, we should be investing in making sure existing heating systems are running as efficiently as possible and that insulation is as good as practical on homes. This would be a far better use of tax payer money that huge subsidies on heat pumps and would reduce peoples bills at the same time as reducing overall gas consumption more than expensive heat pumps for the few.
Hybrid cars rather than EVs are a much better solution because they cost less to produce both economically and environmental impact. Money wasted on EV development could have been used to make ICE cars vastly more efficient at minimal extra purchase price and needed minimal infrastructure changes for charging.
It's a pragmatic rather than dogmatic approach and is actually realisable rather than a pipe dream.

Nobody came round to look at my house but I was assured my existing radiator’s were ok and thats why the quote was so cheap. Furthermore I was told that 18 degrees was the best I could expect to get from it. The only way they make any sense is in new builds with underfloor heating. Retro fitting is pointless.

    • @patrickhosking613
      @patrickhosking613 8 месяцев назад +2

I fit heat pumps as part of my job. They are effective and are getting better all the time, but it does depend on how well the system is designed and fitted.
Yes it's true that they work better with underfloor heating as the output temperature needed is lower than is needed for radiators. You have to be sensible about it and temperatures of 18-20°c are reasonable and easily achievable for these systems. Pretty much all of the systems that we fit have a COP, (coefficient of performance) that average about 3-3.5 : 1. By this I mean that for every kilowatt of power used these systems are producing between 3 and 3.5 kilowatts of heat , we have some that are operating at over 5 : 1. The thing is getting the pumps to generate more heat drops the COP.
Norway uses a lot of heat pumps and they are a relatively cool country, our biggest problem with the heat pumps is the cost of our electricity, which is the most expensive in Europe and that is down to the government and the net zero crowd. We need to invest in nuclear power not wind farms and solar farms where the vast majority of the subsidies are going abroad because they're owned by foreign investors.

Net Zero would be catastrophic for humanity. It is only because of the increase in CO2 that we are currently able to produce enough food to feed 8 billion people.
Net Zero can ONLY lead to the return of widespread famine.
The ONLY world metric that has actually changed in perfect step with CO2 has been crop yields.
50 years ago 3rd world crop yields per hectare were half the current output, (1st world yields were a 1/4 of today's) The world could not produce enough food for 4 billion people with about 1 million famine deaths every year which is more deaths in one year from 4 billion than over the last 23 years from up to 8 billion.

No. The increase in food production is due to the Green Revolution or Third Agricultural Revolution of the 20th century. In the late 1960s, farmers began incorporating new technologies such as high-yielding varieties of cereals, particularly dwarf wheat and rice, and the widespread use of chemical fertilizers.
Net zero means not adding further to the increase in CO2 concentration, currently 425 ppm and rising at 2.5 ppm per year. It will not lead to widespread famine.
The world metric that has changed in 'perfect step with CO2 is global average temperature, at the predicted rate of 3 C per doubling of CO2 concentration. But ocean pH has also fallen at the predicted rate.

Global temperature have not changes significantly over the last 100 years if you do not believe me look at any rural (to avoid any heat island effect) long term daily thermometer archives. any that extend over 100 years show a slight cooling or no trend.
CO2 CANNOT cause significant warming its effect is measured at 3.7W/m2 per doubling ((even the IPCC admit that) so if CO2 doubled to 850ppm the total CO2 shielding would increase by just 3.7W/m2 so from the current 398W/m2 to 401.7W/m2 or a surface temperature change of 0.7 degrees. (16.296 to 16.967- 16.296)

At the same time, newer methods of cultivation, including mechanization, were adopted, often as a package of practices to replace traditional agricultural technology.[5] This was often in conjunction with loans conditional on policy changes being made by the developing nations adopting them, such as privatizing fertilizer manufacture and distribution.[4]"
      Wikipedia and references cited therein.
Instrumental temperature records go back to 1850 and show a warming of about 1.4 C over the last century.
In testimony before Congress by skeptic Judith Curry, satellite temperature data was declared the "gold standard" and "best we have" and RSS data was sworn by when skeptics were claiming a temperature pause from 1998 to 2015.
The first IPCC report in 1991 gave the most likely temperature rise with each doubling of CO2 concentration, the equilibrium climate sensitivity or ECS as 3 C. The warming due to CO2 alone increases the average global temperature by 1.1 C. It is feedbacks, positive and negative, including the fact that a warmer atmosphere holds more water gas which results in the Equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) being 3 C.
CO2 does not replace H2O in the atmosphere, it increases it.
RSS satellite temperature trend from 1979 to February 2024
      Trend: 0.210°C/decade
The temperature change for the 4.5 decades is 0.95 C.
Mauna Loa CO2 concentration rise 338 to 422 ppm.
So according to the logarithmic relationship between temperature and CO2 concentration, for the period in question
      0.95 = k ln(422/338)
Solving the equation gives the proportionality constant, k= 4.26
So the temperature rise with doubling of CO2 concentration (ECS) and including the 24% error is
      4.26 x ln2 = 4.26 x 0.693
      = 3.0 C
The warming is not due to the sun as solar intensity has been declining for decades toward the Grand Solar Minimum.
Also, if the temperature rise was caused by increasing solar radiation, the troposphere and stratosphere would both warm.
If caused by an increase in greenhouse gases, the troposphere would warm and the stratosphere would cool.
That was predicted in1967, and has been shown to be what is happening by satellite data. Syukuro Manabe, the surviving scientist who made the prediction (his collaborator Richard Wetherald had since died) was awarded the Nobel prize in physics in 2021.
So the data agrees with the earlier IPCC models and paleodata putting the most likely value of the ECS at 3 C.
