Demon 170 Another Engine Replaced For Porous Engine Block!

- In today's video we talk about another demon 170 that has had to have an engine replacement as it had a porous engine block.
This is one of the many issues popping up with demon 170 cars. - Авто/Мото
Hope anyone who bought this car, sells it as soon as possible. This car is a curse to anyone that buys one.
It’s called a Demon.
I think its epic that a major automobile manufacturing company would raise the bar (and take the risk) to build a race car... then sell it to guys & gals to drive on the street.
Sounds like it’s going to be a “poor us” engine problem for some 170 owners
My new 2018 Challenger Demon had to have it's engine replaced at 500 miles due to a "porous" engine block. We hoped it was just a bad seal or gasket causing a puddle of oil on our garage floor but unfortunately it was a porous engine block and our local CDJR dealer replaced the engine with a complete new one in just a few days.
I'm 67 have been building engines and racing cars since I was 17 and I've never seen a porous engine block. I've seen them crack, but never seen an engine casting even the GM Mexico small blocks which were pretty low quality just leak oil.
The over built the internals and under built the block. This is the exact reason why there arent any fast stock block challengers or chargers. These engines are already maxed out. That’s why there isn’t a aftermarket for them that is actually going fast.
Hi TK'S GARAGE! I AM RETIRED AUTO TECHNICIAN. I HAVE SEEN POROUS ENGINE BLOCKS.. THE ONE I WORKED ON HAD A POROUS CYLINDER PROBLEM IN ONE OC THE CYLINDERS.. COOLANT IN THE OIL.. WAS HARD TO FIND.. ONCE I REMOVED GHE OIL PAN AND PRESSURIZED THE COOLANT SYSTEM..I THEN SAW A TRICKLE OF COOLANT COMING DOWN THE CYLINDER..SO THE REPAIR WAS TO REPLACE THE SHORT BLOCK.
Great information
Cadillac NorthStar engines were notorious for engine block porosity.
But GM fixed hat issue in 06 with the Northstar V8
Blocks are castings, and yes, castings can most certainly have porosity issues. I have worked in machining for fifty years and it is a common thing when machining cast iron to find porosity . Sometimes it is evident sometimes not.
As a machinist who's worked with castings. I recall our castings having compliance certificates where they were weighed to ensure they weren't porous. A porous block should weigh less than a properly cast block. I'd be shocked if Dodge didn't at least weigh if not x-ray it's blocks.
Yes, it's when the foundry doesn't get the steel ingredients correct.
I hear a major recall about to happen
There will be no TSB and no recall. Dodge will drag their feet, deny any issues exist, and then fade quickly into bankruptcy.
Demon 170 is the Biggest Automotive Fiasco EVER. Oh the humanity.
Porosity occurs when the molds and sand castings vs. metal poured has excessive contamination
Not surprised they replaced the engine for him it's under warranty he could sue them if they didn't and with allcthe bad presss out right now Dodge/Stellantis pretty much has no choice
I’d guess during the casting of the block things went wrong. Small minute holes formed and there ya have it.
porosity is basically a casting flaw, doesn’t matter the metal, it can happen in casting gold for jewelry as well.
I was a Chrysler Tech for some years. Long story short, Chrysler engineers had me run a bunch of ridiculous tests on an engine that had no real problem.
Eventually they told me the 5.7 Hemi had a pourous engine block.
I replaced the engine under warranty. Customer returned a week later with the same nonsense complaint.
I'm not saying there's no such thing as a porous engine, but... There's no such thing as a porous engine block lol
Porosity in engine blocks is not a new thing. There have been problems like these with multiple manufacturers of aftermarket high performance engine parts over the years. Some Ford 427 FE aftermarket parts had this issue years ago and I believe that the first 426 Hemi crate engines in the 90’s had this issue also.
Never heard of that.
Where are they making the engines? Mexico?
You've never heard of a porous engine block? Are you new to cars? This has been a thing as far back as the 70's from my memory.
Not the first car to go fast. Dodge Drag Paks do ok. Wonder what’s going on?
Question is where was the blocks cast and that will tell you all you needed to know
Before guessing and blaming different things we need to gather more information on this. It appears the engine described here has two separate, probably unrelated problems. Glitter in the oil will be from bearing(s) in trouble somewhere and coming apart. The oil leak is something not related and sounds like they are trying to blame occluded casting sand in the block casting somewhere. They seem to have identified this as the issue in a hurry almost like they've seen it previously in other blocks. A couple of dealership line technicians mentioned experiencing this before in other cars they have seen in the past. We need to learn more about past history of casting flaws in other Dodge blocks on this one. As for as the glitter in the oil, someone needs to pull the history of the engine control modules and look at the RPM/oil pressure graphs during track runs to see if pressure is dropping anytime during a launch. This would tell you if oil starvation is an issue.
No wonder Tim K was fired.
Had a Pontiac 400 with a porous block. Brake cleaned it then fixed it with black Mopar silicone.
If the casting is that bad, I wonder if its overall strength is ok? I’d have figured today’s manufacturing standards would make this a non-issue.
Sounds like they have another engine that’s building up too much crankcase pressure, oil starvation , front sump with a 2G launch. Dyno Queen!
seen some carbs with this problem, someone at the foundry didn't do their QC checks
The 3.0t Infiniti Q50s also has porous block problems
If you really stop and think about it, these cars are no better than the Fiat/Alfa.
At least the Italian cars can stay on curved roads , have better QC at the factory, and don't guzzle gas. 💯🤔🧐🤯💥
Stellantis is like a bad dream....
I live life a 1/4 mile at a time. Not a 1/2 mile at a time.😂
It's called poor quality control build.
When I was in the industry I remember that the Northstar engines had issues with pourous/ weeping blocks loosing coolant and the official GM fix was to have us put these bars leak tabs that had a weird ginger scent to them in the coolant during any dealership visits whether or not they had coolant loss or complaints. The stealership i was at had little pails of the tabs at the parts counter and the parts guys were always handing out the tabs with every damn part for those damn engines. Supposedly they blocked up the weeping and didn't block anything up or cause damage.
wtf, porous engine block that’s iron casting? Like How tf does this happen? When regular hellcats been making 900 whp from 2015 to recent🤣. And like dodge hasn’t made drag paks for years of all sort of types. Come on man. Seems like they pissed off the back bone of their company which I feel are doing a crap job on purpose so much that now you can’t get a good Dodge today.
Send the bad block to Tim K's home address.
Send all of them to him
Tofu Dreg demon 170
MEXICO...😂
