This is all prophesied in the Bible. The company wants to avoid liability and litigation regarding excessive force by someone who is not a police officer. Also, your father put his life on the line over merchandise that probably would have been covered by the company's insurance policy. Not wise for your Dad to risk his life over a $20 T-shirt

There are tons of people who have no accountability in this country. The police kill innocent people all the time, break every law they are supposed to uphold, harass and intimidate citizens and look at you with suspicion for exercising the same rights they swore and oath to defend and uphold, but it generally isn't until a cop decides to go against one of their higher ups that they get any type of punishment. There are many injustices that happen everyday, I for one don't give two shits about someone stealing from the same corporations who thought price gouging their consumers during a pandemic was a good idea. Back in the 1980's and 1990's I moonlighted as loss prevention with Target and Walmart... we accosted theives, and if they fought back, we drug them back into the stores kicking and screaming. They were arrested and received jail time for theft and assault. Organized shoplifting was rare and most of the time, just yelling at them as they went out the door resulted in them dropping the merch and running. If retailers can't have the legal system behind them in defending their stores and merchandise, this will escalate to the point where there will be no more brick and mortar retail stores.

I imagine you still pay at the counter, right? Why do you pay at the counter?
I pay at the counter because I can, and because thats what we do in a civilized society, almost everyone understands that second part, but is unable to pass the first part because pay is too low while the cost of everything is too high... I make 980 a month and pay 680 in rent and I live in a part of town where I have had my car vandalized, I have had it broken in to, trash is everywhere, gunshots right outside my window, murders every other day... so its the cheapest place in the city, I pay 100 in electric because the building is old and not well insulated and so heats up very quickly, I live in Southern AZ where most years its 100 before may and stays in the 100s until end of september at the earliest. Internet is practically a basic necessity and I pay $50 for was is effectively 3g internet connectivity at best. I get 130$ in food stamps but with the extreme cost of everything that doesn't get me through the whole month unless I buy shitty unhealthy foods which I do which is why I am obese even though I have a physically demanding job and work 5 days a week... I have a cellphone because I aparently don't qualify for a free one because I make too much money, and that means I pay 40$ for my phone $50 for car insurance and $40 in gas since public transportation doesn't go to my work and where I work is too expensive for me to live near, and so when I do buy something I pay at the counter with what I can... I see people stealing food most of all, and if I couldn't get food stamps I would definitely steal food because I'd have to, I can't go catch my food by fishing, or hunt my food thats illegal, nor can I pick wild growing fruits or vegetables as thats also illegal... The people stealing other things are almost always stealing to make money to buy food instead of stealing it... ironically... or stealing it to cloth themselves or their children... This is the effect of not having a living wage in the country, is rampant theft... Kleptomaniacs are a hilariously small percentage of the population and yeah they will steal regardless of what they earn, but the vast majority of people steal because they believe they have to, pay them a proper wage and they will go back to paying for shit, because thats what people in a civil society do.

Have only hollow display models on the shelf and paper tickets with a QR code that you can scan with the store app or take the paper ticket to the counter. You conduct checkout and then the item is brought to you at the counter after payment. If you decide to not take the item at that point. The refund can be made then and there and the item returned to the back.

Yeah, some retail chains only look at the bottom line. They factor in the price of litigation for preventing theft and the price of the stolen merchandise. Many believe that it's more cost effective to just let people steal rather than face huge litigation costs. I try not to shop at places that allow stealing. Pretty soon, the cost of stolen merchandise and lost business from people fed up with stealing will outweigh any litigation. It's going to get worse before it gets better.

In 2010 I was working at a small department store in Wisconsin doing loss prevention. I was making $9 an hour to confront thieves. I had brass knuckles and knives pulled on me. I had to ask guys twice my size to follow me back inside. My partners were two middle aged women, one was the wife of a local cop, so I did have his cell phone number, but I was only 20 years old and thought I was a big shot having my own office and just getting off the cash registry or truck unloading. In retrospect I’m disappointed my parents didn’t try to talk me out of this job. It’s absolutely crazy to confront animals like this for a minimum wage living.

If theft is not stopped prices on merchandise goes up nationwide to compensate for theft, and stores eventually closes in high theft areas. Stores cannot continue losing money by staying open, so stores eventually close down. Thieves make it difficult for average citizens that are barely trying to stay above water, and now people have to drive further to buy merchandise than somewhere close. This means lost of jobs in America, and how can people pay their mortgage, rent, bills, or have money for food.

Taking more care of people (including their mental health) instead of spending trillions to sabotage other countries is also a great way to start.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the anti-drug policy (or the monopoly policy for drugs, since the American government also traffics) has already been proven to be a total failure. When you demonize all drugs in the same category, you make people think that all drugs are the same, so that if some drugs are good for them and easy to deal with, they will think that the same is true for the others.

It is very frustrating that employees can only purchase items off the clock but we never have enough staff. One person does the job of 5. No overtime. Ross is more worried about internal theft than external. We’ve had the same shoplifters over & over again and nothing ever happens to them. Nothing. I understand why people wonder why they’re paying when others are literally walking out. It is not inflation. I grew up in a low low low income and this is just the mindset of some people. Some worked wanting more and some were never given the tools to know better. And now nothing happens to these people so why not? When I see shoplifters I just tell them to have a good night and see you again soon lol. Because we will. 😊

@@whitetiana3022 whoa whoa whoa, this is about workers not dying for a business or someone else's profit.
the cops not having tanks to maintain order is another. Leaving customers wondering why they are paying when bums can just walk out with merch is what will cause the most damage in the long run.

      Nope. Monopolies are the reason.
Your steak could be worth $4/lbs. But because all the slaughter houses work together to regulate the sale of beef throughout the country, we eat more imported beef than our own cows that we ship out to other countries!
Edit. Actually i forgot about the bottlenecking taking place right now. All the farmers and ranchers have a surplus of cattle right now. But the slaughter houses cant get them through because they arent all running 24/hrs a day because of all the new covid regulations.
So the farmers are getting screwed on selling the cattle they raised. There's all these fda regulations that prevent them from starting their own slaughter house.
This causes an artificial shortage of food. Thus an increase in price beyond reason.

My man SHRINK and theft sprees have been a thing forever. Retail businesses would never have reached the sizes they do if they couldn't figure out how to economically deal with this kind of shit. You're being incensed by sensationalized news ya fuckin dinks.

I work in retail and we see this everyday, and to be honest, I am 63 and I was not hired to be a cop.I try to deter these peby asking them if they need help, which deters some of them, but I don't paid to get yelled at or attacked by criminals and drug addicts. Stores like Walmart make billions yet they don't have real security, plus the courts don't take minor theft seriously and these people get no punishment if caught.Sending them to prison might finally change their thoughts about stealing.

They can't steal while tending to bleeding bullet wounds. But we don't do that in America. Soon there won't be any retail stores left. Then what?

When jails and prisons are full, and a lack of judges causes wait times for sentencing to be months long even for petty theft, what do you expect the Police to do? They prioritize worse crimes due to a lack of government funding because we have defunded our government so much, we are witnessing the beginning stages of anarchy because we continue to defund our government.

Big business made record profits by raising prices on a whim since the pandemic. None of that money went to workers. So now theft is up because the people want back what they are owed.
This didnt just happen because "thats just how they were raised," or "oh its a blue area." People have been pushed to get lesser and lesser for their work and they have asked for a fair share and their pleas fell on deaf ears. When they resorted to theft, they stopped asking.
