      When the "Defund the Police" movement was going on, Portland joined that. The PD needed a budget increase (the need is demonstrated in this video), but they got a 1% budget cut. It's not huge, but it's the wrong direction for their circumstances. The officers got and continue to get the clear message from the public -- they're not appreciated.

      Regardless of how they got there, saying they voted for this is just kicking the can down a road that we've already reached the DEAD END sign, this has spread way too much and it will continue to spread, junkies won't care if you voted dem or rep, they will mug, rape and murder whoever they can after these major corps close their stores and EVERYBODY looses access to goods. We need to stop saying, "They did this to themselves" and start saying "They did this to all of us, and as unfair as it is, we need to clean up the mess and get us out". Granted they will probably still vote for the same ideas tomorrow, but today they screwed us all together.

    A neighborhood Kroger closed here a couple years ago. Theft was the reason. Not only from shoppers but I heard employee theft was very bad too. That neighborhood has no food store now.

    I just resigned my teaching position. The kids are out of control and many of them do these same types of behavior with zero consequences. That's exactly why this is happening. Bad kids turn into bad adults. But keep excusing it away as you enable this behavior.

      @@mikem.8487 Very true, not much you can really do in schools these days. Obviously you can't hit them, but you also can't really expel them unless they do something seriously wrong. Expulsions are just treated as vacations and no matter how bad their grades they generally don't get held back a year as public schools want to get rid of them as fast as possible. Thus you get people graduating high school who can't read.

    Nothing new, saw this in Las Vegas years ago The theft literally closed one of the biggest super centers in that part of town. I had witnessed stealing personally many times. It is still a boarded up building today.

    I'm an immigrant and I find it crazy that shoplifters here, even caught red-handed, are not stopped by store employees. Cuz in my old country, if you get caught you'll be beaten up first before you're handed to the police. This kind of lawlessness is unique to the US because of the culture of suing for everything under the sun, soft judges, criminals given more rights. If judges start using common sense and not giving frivolous lawsuits air, sending these criminals to jail, these would all stop & businesses will not be afraid anymore to stop the thieves!

    It's amazing now how real estate still stays constant my grandmother's house on 85th and Burnside right above 82nd she lived there for 65 years and someone came in redid the house recently it went through a lot of owners since she died in 1985 and they added 1200 square feet to the house ...it sold for 750,000 this was August 2023.. I live there in the 1970s and it was starting to turn then.
    . That was even before the 205 freeway was put in

    Walmart used to locate their stores in rural areas away from big cities, between the hostility of big city politicians and rampant crime, Walmart can easily pull out and move to areas with less theft crime that are less hostile to business. The Walmart family has billions and can afford to move its locations to more profitable markets and locations. I feel bad for the citizens of Portland who were served with a convenient place to shop with affordable prices.

      Walmart works on thin margins, thats the vision Sam Walton had that made walmart rise. If one item is stolen, they will have sell 4 of them to to pay for the loss of the stole item, so a few stolen items on a shelf can make that whole shelf a loss. Soon the whole aisle turns into a loss. Then the store closes.

      I see it differently. Walmart is a magnet for homeless people--with their policy of letting people stay overnight on their property and beg during the day. There's a walmart down the street from my house and since it opened there are more homeless and the neighborhood has gone down. More theft of yard property, pilfering in cars, mail theft. Blue shopping carts in the alleys. Walmart doesn't invest in anti-theft strategies, like adequate security and enough floor staff to deter. It's all stockers and checkout. All so we can buy some cheap trinket for 1.19 instead of 2.79 somewhere else. Crime will fall when walmart leaves

    We’ve had similar problems here in Memphis, TN. When large companies like Walmart, Kroger, Target, etc leave a particular section of town, because of “financial”reasons, that’s simply a code word for shoplifting, holdups, or significant area crime that scares away shoppers.
    Until punishments become so severe, the crime epidemic will only get worse.

    And if you look how they regulate taxes and they give the rich tax breaks and the poor is paying the majority of the taxes because of the crime and that's why our insurances are up. We can't even afford to support. They need to realize the homelessness and what greed has brought our people to.

    Stores expect a percentage of loss but with the rampant theft, lack of police support and fear of shopping there it becomes too much. Employees and customers become too afraid of being in the stores with that environment. I'm glad the Liberals are seeing what they created and they certainly deserve it.

    My family and I visited Portland from Phoenix hoping to escape the crime infested, overcrowded freeways, homelessness on every corner…… after 3 days in Portland, Phoenix didn’t seem so bad. What a S hole.

    Darrel is a good guy and a straight shooter. I work down the street from him a couple blocks away. I used to live in the neighborhood. When my car was stolen out out of my driveway the cops couldn't care less. When it was "recovered" 10 blocks away it was because it was parked illegally, towed without informing me, and then I had to pay a $400 tow bill like I was the criminal. I've lived in Portland 50 years and it just keeps getting worse. I am heartbroken that this once sleepy bohemian counter-culture kooky city has descended into chaos and anarchy. Portland should be a cautionary tale for other cities about law enforcement. Also I am a republican, believe strongly in personal accountability, and feel like I am trapped behind enemy lines in my home city.
