As a sailor who graduated boot camp on December 17th during COVID, this boot camp looks pretty alien. We never used the machines in freedom hall, we only did pt once every other day, we only did basic pt like push-ups, situps, plank, etc. week 5 was our last week, in general a lot of stuff was either more lax or just cut out completely.
Also graduated Dec 17. So weird seeing how much has changed. It looks like a whole different boot camp

Yes i talked to a young Navy vet it aint nothing like when I was in holy shit they were brutal in the old days! My cc used to scream in my ear all day long he hated me but then later said he liked me thats why he did it to make me grow up, i was a smart ass teenager! It worked I became a man there allright!
They dont even haze you anymore when you go out to sea for the first time. I got my ass beat when i first went out all of us new guys did on the flight deck they opened up the door all of our noses were bleeding. They don't do that shit anymore I hear from the younger vets.
This looks like a summer camp advertisement...a lot has changed. I remember when we still got yelled and and mashed...and 10% of your company would go section 8 or worse in the first 2 weeks. After this relaxing stay in GreatMistakes...anyone going to BUDS or Marine combat for Corpsman will have a real wake up call I'm afraid.
Boot camp has changed. I remember a lot of yelling, a lot of running, no sleep, rifles, and being outside all of the time (usually marching or running). We were always in a hurry and everything was done together.
You know, when I went through in '95, we didn't even have Battlestations. But it was still a hell of a lot different than what it is today.
What did they do before battlestations?

1995 Division 099. Best advise I can give to anyone joining the Navy is to not allow yourself to go in undesignated, be sure you have a rating prior to joining. Choose your rate, choose your fate. Navy made me the man i am today, set me up for a sweet job getting out, helped me buy my first house and though those four years where some the hardest and crappiest years of my life I cant help but to look at that four year adventure with pride and smile. Best of luck future shipmates.
Dear Marines: You are all stronger physically and maybe mentally we thank you for serving. Every branch is important. Aren't ya'll all supposed to have a strong brotherly bond? Well these are your brothers and sisters too and the only reason you guys succeed is because these people are here to help. Please don't bash them. Thank you to everone who is serving we love you :)

Sure has changed since 1969 when I went through Lakes! Kinder & gentler Navy! I remember my CC and everyone else screaming at us constantly. Getting beat up and punched was normal. Why don't the females get their hair cut? I thought the haircuts was instrumental in losing individual identities? Double standards. All in all I've always been glad and very proud I joined and served 6 years. Taught me my future career and got me straightened out and grown up.

I got to Great Lakes in April of 67. We wore "Boon Dockers" from the day of issue until graduation. The chow hall was a good place to go on a diet. PT's ? WTF is that? Body composition back then was; 2 arms-check, 2 legs-check, a head (For your cover to rest on.) not the aka latrine for other services.
This helped me a lot. I am joining the navy and now I know how to handle myself and what to expect. thank you

To be honest; as a Navy Airman Recruit, I hope to God that this isn't what it's like in BMT. I want the shit to be as tough as all these sailors that went in the '90s. I want to go Navy; I don't want a cake walk getting there.
I went through in the 90's and this doesn't look anything like the crap I had to endure.
That's what I'm tellin myself. I want people shouting in my ears and obstacle courses nd shit. I've started the process towards becoming a navy soldier and I'm worried it's goin to be too easy

The boot camp training have come a long ways and so much different than it was when I went into the Air Force in 1968. I lived in the old barracks at Lackland AFB, TX., which was made of wood and they had new complexes which we never got to live in.

When did you go to boot camp? I went in 2007. We had divisions, not companies. Also, we had 10 or 11 minutes to eat from the time the last person sat down, so even the last person had a chance to eat.
Holy Cow...how things have changed since my days at Great Lakes. First off, the compartments are MUCH bigger than the "old ships" we had. Second, the fact that there's classrooms AND a galley/mess deck in each ship...in my day, we marched in formation to EVERYTHING...Training Classes and Chow. And I've heard that "Battle Stations" is all video simulated...And the beginning where they have "foot sensors"...Wish we had that in my day, sure would have saved my shins....

A salad bar???? Basic for me was in 1997 there at RTC Great Lakes. When we got off the bus there was no, "Please grab this paper" we were screamed at for 24 hours strait.. We stayed up all night pissing in cups and being reamed for crimes we did not commit and getting fitted. Our call home was a script that said "Im here, Im safe", we were not allowed to call home the rest of the 11 weeks. The first 2 weeks were smurf weeks and did not count. Our barracks were not in a square like that, they were all the way down.. We marched until we could march sleeping.. We ran A LOT. Nobody showed us how to shave.. Our classes were long and boring, no computers, we had an instructor that you had to struggle to comprehend because your body wanted to sleep.. Your pen runs off your paper all the time.. In other words, Im not sure if this video is BS, or the Navy has got this bad..
Oh and we were cycled in General Quarters nearly every day "Until it RAINED" if you don't know what that means, then the Navy has gotten bad..
Joshskeety30 i agree with this statement and my boot was in 2001, we still did all of this, they must have changed it a few years after i passed through..........i'll never forget having the RDC bust in the front door and yell out GENERAL QUARTERS!! and us having to push back the racks as fast as we could and get into formation only to then "get beat" for the next 2 hours, enough so that the one guy who was in the set of racks across from me would be swimming in the sweat puddle under his chest as we did 8-count-body-builders......
I went through in Jan 98-Mar 98 at Great Lakes and I know exactly what you mean. This soft crap I see here is an absolute joke. We could get cycled for hours on end, and almost anytime they felt like doing it.

It's cause the people going in had a shit nutrition history so their bones would easily break(lots of asmos).
The sneakers prevent much of the injuries, especially during P-Days.
Once they are checked medically, they can start wearing boots.
My div was experimented on with shoe weeks and boot weeks, fucked our feet up that way. Could never adjust to the boot.
The bootcamp training now just seems so feminized and easy. So sad!

@BootCamp4Me That is true. I was in the navy and trained through the Aircrew program in Pensacola along side Marines. Also I was stationed on the Nimitz-we had a full marine squadron and other marines on deployyment. Everything you said is correct.
I finished navy boot almost 2 years ago and this looked relaxed as fuck. So glad we got NWU type 3’s is hate to look like a janitor

Holy cow! A lot of changes have been made since i was in there in December of 1972!! We weren't allowed to look at the waves let alone train with them! I spent Christmas of '72 in boot camp at NTC/RTC Orlando.
My time was January 1958 San Diego NTC, Since I had prior service I was RCPO. still it was a lot different than Army basic at Fort Ord Calif.
I was on a flag ship and so we had inspections all the time..it was very strict but the travel is great. We also spent a lot of time off the coast of Vietnam doing gunfire support for the Marines.
The closest we ever got was 1 mile away, we got to see the war close up that day.
brings back many memories... aside from all the yelling, moving around exhaustingly, being ridiculed, being ITed, bootcamp was a positive experience.Met lifelong friends, brought structure t my life, and we had the coolest RDCs, Chief Laxton,Petty Officer Garr and Jack. As Chief Laxton use to always say, bootcamp is as hard as you make it. Hooyah Division 076 2013!
Thanks for the Cool Recruit training video. Give's a liitle insight of what goes on in the training process. I did my training through OSUT 16wks with the Army. I like Navy things though. Might sign up. i'm a civeee now.
@ Jonah Destry, I went through all the bad parts get them out before you only get one day to rest and it is a lot harder. I made sure I took them out before I went best thing I ever did. Good luck had a lot of fun there.

@360floflyer Awesome! No, honestly, I'm glad I joined the Navy. But then again, I was a Navy brat my whole life, and the Navy was all I ever knew. I wanted to join since I was like 12 year old. So I followed in my father's footstepes, and joined. The Navy has been a huge accomplishment for me.

Awesome I'm joining Tuesday
For me, it's been over 50 yrs ( I feel really old all of a sudden) since my visit to GLTC. It seems almost like yesterday...or the day before. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Over all it is a great experience for anyone, male /female, and I'd gladly do it all again if I could. These day's, I do 40 sit ups in 40 day's and swim 50 yds in about the same amount of time.
I graduated boot camp in January. They make you study for tests 1,2, and 3 during chow or anytime there is downtime. And the uniforms are different. Uniform of the day is usually the blue digi camis (Navy Working Uniform (NWUs).
Just signed my contract. November can't get here soon enough!
4:14 that is so true about the "peanut butter" shot I saw the needle and prayed! I felt like an object or something whew so many shots that day.
....I was one of the last in the old ships, ship 10 ftw, we had to trek it to the galley not eat in our ship. Also those classrooms are way more advanced then we had. Alot has changed.

Old navy here. I went to Great Lakes in 1966...It was a whole different scene back then
I went through RTC San Diego in 1976...all male boot...to stay lock-stepped in what worked THEN as to what applies NOW is apples & oranges, mate...TIME, TECHNOLOGY and NEEDS OF THE NAVY are what drives the boot camp syllabus...CNETRA determines what makes a basic Sailor -- prepping them for "A" School or apprenticeship...
@NoRefills1 Do what feels the best for you and what'll make you happy not connections.I can understand because I've wanted to be a marine at first because of the bond I have with my MI & SMI while in MCJROTC but do what you feel is right.This is just my opinion but what ever you choose I thank you for making the choice to serve your country
4:18 is the Bicillin shot. And it feels like paste and/or a golf ball in your behind. One story that goes around is to the male recruits get a square needle in the left testicle. One former RDC that I served with said that he had a recruit to cry because he believed it.
The navy will, in some cases, help with loan repayment and there are about a dozen programs once you are already in to help out or in some cases completely cover college costs.

Good times. Staying awake ironing all night, tons of drill(which we never were any good at), lots of folding and inspections, and PT that wasn't really all that bad at all. Though there have been some big changes lately like the nice camo uniforms so no more ironing. But basic wasn't that bad after you get used to it, eventually you learn to love it. Just don't try to keep your cell phone. Not a good idea lol

For those that think this is easy, just remember that up to 7 mins, its only "in processing", just long days of what is featured here. I went to boot camp in Orlando thousands of years ago but I'm sure Great Lakes is pretty much the same. Other things they don't show you is how group punishment is dished out for the mistakes of one person or a few people. Daily one hr workouts? What they fail to tell you is the number of One Hr Workouts in 1 day they have in mind for you.
i finished MEPS already, now all thats left is for me to finish up in school. Thanks for the replys helps alot tho :).
The Navy has changed since dad went in 1946. His Boot Camp was in MD. He got sent to radio school at Great Lakes after 3 years in. They yanked him off the USS Missouri for that. When he finished the schooling, they wouldn't let him go back. Instead, they kept him there for 3 years as an instructor. When he finally got out of there he was an E-6. Promotion to E-7 soon followed on Guam. E-8 on Cyprus and E-9 while in route to S. Africa in 1965. He retired in 1971 as a Master Chief and he had refused promotion to become an officer and for nomination as MCPON ( twice ). These kids have it easy compared to how training used to be. Phone call on arrival? Nope, post card back then.
@LightningbugsInAJar Its essentially the same however at the Academy they concentrate training on management/leadership. If your goal is to be an officer, you can still attend a four yr college, join the ROTC, attend OCS then become an officer. You can still enlist as well, take classes cause the Navy pays for most of it, obtain your 4 yr degree then apply to OCS and become an officer. Or become a Warrant officer. For the differences please reference wikipedia.

My cousin's daughter is going through boot right now, then to P-Cola for her brown-shoe school...I was there for my Aviation Medicine /Aerospace physiology C-school..Code 42 until class formed and my Air Crew & Jump school....oh jeez...flashbacks!!
@JoeleoBallantyne i just loved the look on the marines faces in boot camp. that all us navy dudes wore was breezy cloths while they wore big ass uniforms and backpacks!
Keep in mind that during the bootcamp pt test, they run it in a group, the 12 minute limit is a minimum. In the olds days we ran in formation, and passed or failed as a group. The Marines do pullups, how many of those can your do?

I had a cousin join USMC specifically to avoid working at his father's HVAC business...
It would depend entirely on what you do in the Navy. If you're a Machinist's Mate (MM) or something along those lines, you'd probably get good exposure to HVAC material... but there's going to be a LOT MORE to the job than just HVAC.
Navy training is to make you useful aboard a vessel. Propulsion (nuclear or otherwise) is a heck of a lot more important than AC. But airflow becomes very high-priority on subs.
Of course, that was in San Diego, that was a REAL Navy Bootcamp. My CC was a SEAL and we were in his first company. We were tight next to the Marines & thought we were going to graduate Marines!

I am a 3rd gen sailor. Dad went through in '86 enlisted , grandpa was Avenger Pilot in WWII. This time last year, I was half way through boot. I have heard stories about the old boot camp and what it was like from my old man. I do agree that boot camp was a little easy than what I expected. But remember, now a days the men and women (not kids) still have to put up with the RDCs and their games. Just because they cant hit anymore didnt mean they find ways to get their point across
The only time i wore the white navy PT shirt was in boot camp. Seabees wore brown tees for many years until 2010 i think we had to wear the yellow pt shirt
Lol you know they are holding back for the cameras. I went through RTC Great Lakes in 2000. We had "picture day" for the cruise book and I remember the RDCs smiling for the pictures then beating you down after the picture was taken. Lol. Division 124!!!!!

enjoy it man! and just know, that no one enjoys the first week or so, its only because its just a big change in lifestyle, give it about 2-3 weeks and you'll eat and breath boot-camp. Stay MOTO and remember, between life and death a Corpsman guards the line
@grozejeremy if you need help, they will show you. I would suggest you go to the pool a few times before you get there though. Do not get on the RDCs radar

Me too i am waiting a year. And for this year I have changed my diet and am working out every day. Including lifting and cardio. I want to be prepared so I dont make it harder for my fellow recruits.
@MrNismo121 No the Blue Jacket Manual does not change every year. The latest version (24th) was created in 2009.. the one before that was in 2002. They update it when needed... for instance the HM and DT rates merged among others so some things change... the original was in 1902.. at there are 24 versions... So its not updated too often.

The most obvious HVAC training in the Navy would involve fire-control and smoke ventillation... so, if you do get to focus on HVAC things, it might leave you a little overqualified for piecing together residential ductwork like my uncle.

They were talking about the all blue sweatsuit and they are called smurfs when they first arrive. For us, in 83, they called us raisins, because we had to wear the black watchcap all the time. I hated that thing, wouldn't wear it for years after. The big deal was getting to wear a white hat.
