My time was January 1958 San Diego NTC, Since I had prior service I was RCPO. still it was a lot different than Army basic at Fort Ord Calif.

Sure has changed since 1969 when I went through Lakes! Kinder & gentler Navy! I remember my CC and everyone else screaming at us constantly. Getting beat up and punched was normal. Why don't the females get their hair cut? I thought the haircuts was instrumental in losing individual identities? Double standards. All in all I've always been glad and very proud I joined and served 6 years. Taught me my future career and got me straightened out and grown up.

As a sailor who graduated boot camp on December 17th during COVID, this boot camp looks pretty alien. We never used the machines in freedom hall, we only did pt once every other day, we only did basic pt like push-ups, situps, plank, etc. week 5 was our last week, in general a lot of stuff was either more lax or just cut out completely.

Graduated during covid and it’s nothing like this now. It’s so soft, covid made everything so easy and took the hard work out. Beast was 2 days and we only did 3 obstacles

A really helpful exercise I do is hopping on one foot and switching every 30-60 seconds for a total of 3 minutes or so. Focus on landing on and pushing off your forefoot.

I went through basic in the '70s (3708 BMTS) when we still did PT in fatigues and combat boots and the now old "thousand man" barracks were still considered new. Several of the 1940s wooden barracks were still standing but I'm not sure if they were still in use. The first time we marched by them en route to somewhere the TI's gave us "eyes right" and made sure we knew that those had been their barracks when they went through Lackland in the '60s, and we didn't know how good we had it. It certainly didn't break my heart that we weren't in those old wooden barracks. Edit: I found an old AFT article that said they moved the last surviving wooden barracks to the Lackland museum in 2010.

We didnt have no cell phones to turn in just my precious ciggarettes, nobody gave a damn I was gone lol girlfreinds didnt write nothing. I think i got one letter in bootcamp from a friend and it was stupid but we bonded with our shipmates and met new brothers of all races and we became one family. We became warriors, soldiers, machines and freinds! It was great. But bootcamp is no joke!!
