From all of the movies shot in New York City it creates a lot of expectations for living there. I have lived in NYC for a couple years now and wanted to share some of the expectations vs the reality.

FYI since I've been getting a lot of comments about it. The apartment is a converted 2 bedroom. The whole apartment is over $35k a year split between my roommate and I.
That's $27k pa or £13,500- pretty much London rental prices, but in London public transport and food and eating out are WAY more. Why not move to a cheaper burb Brett - Queens or Weehawken?
That doesn't sound bad at all
Not bad, I pay alot more for my tiny hovel in San Fransico. Can't wait to move to New York, a REAL city.
@@TheRealMartin I pay that much I'n San Diego, but for a 2Br 2Ba
this isnt pricey at all..in Hungary- Budapest, HUNGARY...FRIGGING MIDDLE EASTERN OF EUROPE, we pay around 7000 a year for rent
Friends was so unrealistic. Rachel could never afford to even split that place with Monica on a waitress’ salary
It was a rent controlled apartment
But wasn’t Monica a Chef too? That’s a lot of money
Talique Taylor exactly. It was rent controlled, and Monica made really good money for at least part of the series. They literally had a whole episode about their incomes, so I don't know why people act like the show was not realistic.
new york city is garbage
christian guzman your mom is garbage
I feel like everytime u move somewhere ur expectations should always be really low. So they can only go up from there.
Also, familiarity breeds contempt. Once you start living and working somewhere, putting up with the daily grind and pulse of the place, it can lose its luster. Every place is fabulous when you are just visiting.
i feel like everytime some skank starts a sentence with i feel like she's a skanky basic bitch, literally. alexa play desposito

thank you, period all these comments complaining about how NYC is have never even been there lmao
New Yorkers love to dump on New York but heaven help a stranger to the city who does the same. Suddenly all New Yorkers love New York and want to tear his head off lmao.
We're like that here in Naples too. Our city is a FUCKhole, a CESSpit, but we welcome strangers with open arms and are the best hosts ever... just don't badmouth our town or you're going in the bay
But I want to own larger property and stockpile on guns. And want more affordable homes. So I’m planning to leave as soon as possible
If you are okay with living a modest life then NYC is fine.
@@djtkm tf does that mean
I've lived in NYC pretty much my whole life. I can tell you, I don't have any real friends anymore. Finding an affordable apartment without having like 3 jobs is almost impossible. It's still a great place when you figure it out. At the same time it stresses you out like no other place in the world.
that 's exactly why I left NY, still love it but I would never make the mistake of living there again unless I am a multi millionnaire...Let's just face it Nyc is for rich people only
There’s no room for low income folks in NYC. It’s too expensive to live here or to get out. If you happen to win the lottery the run.
Everyone thinks it's so bright and beautiful but its really just a bunch of buildings and traffic
And cloudy
That’s not gonna stop me from moving there😂

I was born and raised in Brooklyn. Still live in Brooklyn as well. New York City was at it's coolest in the late 80s to late 90s I'd say. Then after that it just became scam for all those looking to live this super cool life that you see mostly on TV. Similar to why people go to Hollywood to make it big. Now granted yes NYC still is cool if you can afford the inflated cost of living. And it is definitely cooler than some small town middle America farm for those people who come from there. But if you have to live 3 people in a 2 bed room apartment and scrape by dollar to dollar it's not worth it. Also it's a place mostly for younger people looking to live a fun city life. Once you meet someone and want to have a home and kids you realize you have to get far the hell away from Manhattan.
Thank you for your input. Probably the most honest and rational opinion / advise I've heard. But... I'm a Colorado country girl and still would give anything to move there and experience the energy out there!! I think your lucky to live there
People moving there from middle of nowhere are a big part of the problem. They jack up the rent because they are willing to pay anything just to be there. They are afraid of the gritty realism that made NY great, so the powers that be turned it into Disney land not offend the newcomers. Now NYC has no soul and is basically like everywhere else. What a shame.
@@Tomorrison28 that's globalism for you.
Turning every place in the world to the copy of NY.
Thanks for your input as well. I've heard from many born and bred New Yorkers, that NYC was in it's true prime in the late 80's- late 90's as well. New York seemed like a truly fun place to be, especially in the 90's.
Yeah NYC was still distinct from everywhere else in the 2000s when people only thought of it as Manhattan since the last decade many transplants moved to the outer boros which is why Brooklyn is has become more mainstream and less gritty.
I think its up to the individual to actually get what NYC have to offer. You clearly had what it took
Mythe thank you. I've lived here all of my life and it's not like this for me, for many reasons.

You gotta GRAB it definitely... life never was easy never will be it either to be or not be sink or swim
Tanisha W Live in the suburbs or rural areas, very beautiful and calm.
Mythe lol yep
I was born in Park Slope Brooklyn in 1983. I went to college in NYC. I watched the the city change from a vibrant diverse city with affordable housing for young people starting out, to a place where rich people send their kids for college. Don't buy the hype that "NYC is the greatest city in the world!!!". This stopped being true about 2004. I now live in Las Vegas, and could never imagine ever again living in a shoebox in the sky in a place with miserable weather. My old NYC apartment is now renting for $4,800 lol. I paid $2,600 a mere 10 years ago. My bigger condo here in Las Vegas would rent for only $1,100, and it's nicer, newer, and there is a massive swimming pool area in our building. NYC has essentially reverted back to the old tenement system, with 12 people occupying a 1,000 sf apartment. If you're 30 and you still have a roommate, then it's time to leave.
I have been to every place you mentioned, and I would have to agree. I also lived in Hong Kong for 3 years, and I'd say that's a far better metropolis. NYC is like the Las Vegas version of the Eiffel Tower. It's where unsophisticated people go to act pretentious towards their high school friends who were smart enough to live within their means.
I'm 36 yo and I live with my mom, I want to die, kek

NYC is no different then Miami Beach, Hollywood and any other famous city that you see on tv. It’s full of tourists and basic people who aren’t even from there wanting to experience what they’ve seen on tv. Most of those places barely have the culture that movies made them famous for.
Omg i can't agree more, i went to Miami and stay for 4 years at the beginning was existed then i quickly realized i have to make money to live there or i'll be broke in a blink of an eye, rent , food , drinks , parkings super expensive and jobs paying not more than minimum wage you just lives to pay bills. the things i saw in the movies are there but not the way they portray it the fancy cars , ocean drive and the big mansions are true , Miami must be the city with more rich people in the world but you dont see them shoping or hanging out you just see tourists, getho people and cubans that went to Miami 40 years ago running away from Castro .. the good old days of celebrities spending money on the beach are all gone , in no more than a year you just want to leave so bad the rent is killing you and when you go out you just see getho people .. but in some way i miss Miami its quiet and beautiful specially at night, downtown is growing up a lot maybe in 10 years it will get as expensive as new York
*than Miami Beach, not then. WTF?

Fact: you can find an inexpensive apartment in NYC, but in the super bad areas. You will find beautiful spacious studios and 1 bedrooms for like $900-$1100.00, which is pretty cheap for NYC, but in project high crime areas...lol.
Real real NYC'ers rarely go out during work days. We work than go home. Living in NYC makes you hate people.
Yes, all these New York apt bloggers rent only in nicer areas. They seem to totally ignore the fact that NYC has reallybad hoods, it's time they wake up and get out of their crystal bubble.
Of course they are going to rent in nicer areas. Who the hell wants to live in the hood? There are still some pretty affordable places outside of Manhattan in safe neighborhoods though.

I love the video and I'm proud of you for moving and going after your dreams
It’s not really the city that’s all that great, it’s the person you are and the perspective you have. Since I grew up in east harlem, never really seeing trees or houses or small towns ever, now that I’m older that’s what I crave because I haven’t experienced it. I want to live in a cute quiet town with trees, nature and houses (to me houses are very foreign and is like a dream of mine to have my own house) and living in nyc broke is like the worst thing ever. Can’t find any apartments I can afford, if there is any it’s in the Bronx and it’s the size of a closet. Applying to low income housing takes two years to find out if you were even accepted. Since I grew up here it’s really hard for me to transition into adulthood and be independent because I can’t afford to live on my own. I can’t afford eat nice food everyday (I do treat myself to chipotle or dominos once a week or so) and jobs are extremely difficult to find, especially good paying ones. I had a job at a clothing store and I got paid less than $200 every two weeks 🙄 one time I got a $40 paycheck...plus having anxiety and depression makes everything 10x more difficult than it is so I had to quit because my depression got real bad. And my mom kicked me out so now I live with my grandma in Harlem again and it’s honestly terrible because this apartment has so many issues plus I’m living with two senior citizens (my great grandparents) plus my grandma. A lot of times I wish I wasn’t born and raised in nyc...and my parents were kids (literally kids when they had me) so I wasn’t born into a very financially stable household in the first place. Sorry for venting...been apartment searching for a while to move out of my great grandparents apartment to live alone with my grandmother and I’ve been loosing hope and feeling depressed about it :( recently found an apartment in Staten Island that’s right next to some houses so maybe I’ll be okay 🤷🏼♀️

I lived in Manhattan for 10 years. An exhilarating experience. I learned a lot of invaluable life lessons. However, it's a dog eat dog environment that throws excessive noise at you constantly, not to mention foul smells and extreme weather year round. Also, prepare to come cashed up. You will live pay check to pay check regardless of your occupation.
My korean coworker used to live in New York. She told me unless you make $100,000 a year, it isn't going to be good to live in New York. She isn't the first person to tell me this either. new York was even expensive more than 15 years ago. One lady told me her brother-in-law paid over $400 a month just to park his car.
Yes. You simply cannot enjoy New York City (like you should be if you're going to be working ALL THE TIME) unless you earn 100k plus per year. Rent is expensive for what you actually get, and everything else is more expensive comparably to other US cities.
lovelyvegan princess lol I make like 15k a year and my dad and mom both make 40k.......and we paying 1200$ of rent for years ......but I barely go out and buy anything for my self lol

The REAL New York City died a long time ago. Now it's just an oversized playground for hipsters and trust fund kids from the midwest who have Mommy and Daddy paying their $2,500 rent while they pursue a career in the "arts". NY has become severely gentrified and most the native New Yorkers have to flee to another state or another country because the rent and cost of living has skyrocketed to ridiculous amounts. Unless you make $100,000 a year, you will not live comfortably in NYC. Most people live paycheck to paycheck, while many others rely on government assistance and have to live in low-income housing projects in really ghetto neighborhoods. If you earn anything less than $20 an hour, you will not be able to afford an apartment on your own unless you get lucky and find a cheap one somewhere. Minimum cost of a small studio apartment with no bedrooms starts at around $1,200 in a shitty neighborhood. NYC sucks now.
True!
How was the New York before! The opposite of all of this?
Or unless you know family that lives there and they're slpitting up the rent, other than that, yea your pretty much basically screwed, the hardest part about living NYC is finding a place

What I imagined living in nyc is like when I was 10 : living in a cozy apartment with purple walls, having 5 really close insane friends
When I went (just for 4 days) I loved it. I didn't compare it really to something like friends, I actually compared it to the movie Devil Wears Prada. I really enjoy the fashion and the winter there, it sometimes looks so grey and I like that for some reason lol. Perhaps though I'll stick to mostly visiting NYC since I'm not sure if I want the majority of my life there.

thats just manhattan. Not any other borough you fuck
I’ve never actually lived in NYC but I’ve been there 6 times. I know I can only see like 2% of the city as a tourist. Just want to say though that I have travelled all over the world and lived in Vancouver, Montreal, Budapest, and near Tel Aviv, and NYC is still my #1 favourite city ever.
Love the skateboard shot! 😱
Underneath the skateboard shot rocks!
I live in nyc, I was living off of people and working at high end retail. My last job was at Hermès. I was super depressed. I have severe anxiety and depression so retail jobs arnt for me. I only get the jobs because I’m handsome and mixed so all the jobs want me. I served champagne and open the door for guest at Hermès and made 18/h which isn’t enough to survive. All the customers were legit millionaires. Anyway I had a meltdown and was sent to the psych ward in Bellevue hospital. After staying for 3 weeks I was released and had nowhere to go so they put me in a homeless shelter.
I was also put into a mental health program and I see a therapist and a psychiatrist who prescribes medication.
After 7 months in the shelter (which sucked. There was a curfew out the door at 8am back inside by 10pm every day or you will lose your bed) anyway I followed the rules and went to my mental health program and didn’t get a job. A break from working for the first time in years !!. And just last month they signed me up for mental health housing and I have a place in fort Greene for free. I have my own place. But I have no money !!! Which still makes me depressed. BUTT I have free time to focus on my self and freedom to be on my own. Also I am starting school this fall. I get to continue working on my mental health and finally go to school. I fee soooo lucky !!!!.
I am 25 yrs old
I grew up in NJ and was kicked out of my house when I was 17 for being gay.
I took the train to nyc and moved here because there are lots of retail jobs.
I’ve rented rooms and my mental illness always made me lash out on the people I rent with or made me quit my job and not be able to pay rent so I’ve been struggling and in and out of homelessness for years. Finally !!! I have my own place and time to focus on me
Thank you nyc
Also I absolutely love nyc
I did develop a drug addiction (cocaine) while being here but I am sober for 9 months now
You people can’t imagine how great full i am for this city for giving me a chance.
The only difficult thing is that I’m extremely poor.
If I get a job I jeopardize loosing everything
I live off of food stamps
I am a single male so I can manage
I am very alone
An introvert
Very shy
Very insecure (even if I am perceived as handsome)
Anyway NYC is an amazing place people from all around the world are here
I’ve lived in Texas before and traveled to other cities in middle America and nothing compares to nyc
Good luck to everyone surviving here in this city. You can make it !
Ok end of rant (:
Wow, I wish you the best honestly, I'm so sorry to hear the situation with your parents, that breaks my heart but hopefully everything will be OK, trust the process and have faith. ❤
That's a lot to handle...
No guns for you
I'm sorry ☹️. Sounds like you need to find your TRUE purpose in life.
Do you not know that There's sooo MUCH MORE to you than those things you listed,
Handsome
Gay
Shy
Poor
Mental "problems"?
No, the only problem is how you see your identity.
You're so much more than your identity politics and victim cards.
If only you knew your TRUE worth.
I literally thought i was going to be like a Gossip Girl kind of vibes
I found your channel through Bobby. Loving what I am seeing!
Thanks for the tour, and information
if you picked me up and dropped me on the middle of NYC I would probably panic and run to the nearest police station to ask them to get me out of this city!
I can’t tell you how much, as someone born and raised, and still living in NYC, I hate gentrifiers and this video just took that hate up a notch! But, I wish you well on your journey. word of advice, New Yorkers make friends, not a “network of people”
Love that transition with your skateboard
For some reason, this just made me fall in New York even more
Don`t worry, Once you move and the city crushes you then you`ll fall out of love with it pretty quick.
NYC is what you make of it; it’s better and cheaper to live in the other boroughs and commute to the city if you still want that Manhattan experience.
😍 Santander’s branch. As a Spaniard I love the effort that Ana Patricia Botín is putting into this bank!! BTW I love your videos Brett 💪🏼
Thankyou for sharing your Allsome!😇😇😇
Not the video I expected. But *amazing quality! BRAVO*
Lol you can’t go by what F.R.I.E.N.D.S shows you. The characters are native New Yorkers (from Long Island and Queens) who for the most part grew up with each other.
I grew up here, like you. Over the years TV shows (like Sex and the City), bloggers, and vloggers have shown a side to New York City that has grown to be inauthentic. People have this expectation of what NYC is and it’s not what they think it is. NYC has changed so much in attitude. The natives are leaving because rent/living is so expensive. It’s expensive because people who think NYC is like what they see on TV are coming in and unfortunately changing the vibe of the city. It used to be so different. I miss that NYC that I always knew.
♥️
Thelondonbadger Pretty much, man
So beautifull city so much peoples and all alone !! :( hurt about NY
It seems like NYC is what you make of it, and you've definitely made the most of the experience!
Man. Thank you so much. I was expecting the same
Iam from Georgia. Iam curious to why everyone I know who used to live in new York they all say new York is really really nasty and that it stinks. Like it has a weird smell. They all say that people who live there don't realize it because you get used to it. But they say once you leave and go back you relise how it smells. They say there are spots that are pretty clean but for the most part that there is filth down every alleyway and that you will actually see rats all over the place. Is this all true? I know 3 different people from NYC who have all said this.
Completely personal opinion up ahead, not aiming to offend:
I moved to NYC from rural England in 2017, and life was good... for about ten days. Then the homelessness epidemic, shady characters, and living conditions in general truly begin to wear off the magic.
The housing issue is horrendous. It should be common knowledge by now, but the rodent problems, the fucking SIRENS (Which seem to get louder when you try to sleep,) and bars on the windows don’t exactly telegraph “this is home.”
I have since returned to England with a distinct, more realistic impression of New York, and genuinely *never* want to go back. I’ve had one too many hustlers, crackheads, and rampant addicts in general stop me in the streets and ruin my day.
Only the strong survive 🤷🏾♂️
Raph Reyes Or, you could just live somewhere nicer. No points for struggling.
@John Kimber Glad somebody out there agrees. Thank you.
great skateboard shots
hahahah i love this one... thank u.. .looking forward to meet u all bloggers in new york... enjoy
