    I’m pretty sure I have vocal nodules... your video gave me a lot of hope! I’ve heard people not being able to sing again because of them and that would seriously ruin my life :( most people don’t understand unless they’re singers and actually value their voice

      Sorry to hear you're having voice problems. Nodules are more common than people think and actually, most cases can be treated by SLT rather than operations. So it's quite rare for them to be so bad you'd never sing again! I'm glad this has given you hope though and I hope you can get a proper diagnosis soon :)

    Thank you for being so vulnerable and sharing your personal story. You're a warrior and you and I have similar stories and backgrounds. So many things you said are spot on and exactly what I went through also and learned. I love how you talked about "saying NO" and learning healthy vocal health boundaries with work, opportunities and people. That was one of the hardest factors about going through this experience I personally had to learn how to do and it's still a challenge sometimes to be honest and it's been over a decade since I went through my vocal nodule fiasco ha. I would love to connect if you are interested. I'm just now opening up about my vocal health journey. Sending you so much love and all the vocal health!

    Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with nodules on your vocal cords. You make learning quite enjoyable and I appreciate your advice. Although I am not a singer I am having hoarseness problems on and off for over a year and I have made an appointment with and ent doctor. It is helpful to know what to expect at the appointment and what things may help to regain a normal voice. Once your loose your voice you begin to realize that you have been taking your voice for granted. It is very annoying and frustrating when you cannot verbally communicate .

    I have been teaching myself how to sing for over 2 years now and I made a lot of progress. Initially I was never able to sing in my high registers at all and later I discovered mix voice and eventually got the hang of it which really opened up a whole new world for me as I was now able to sing my favorite songs that go pretty high. However, I seem to have gotten very excited about this and ended singing a lot of hours every single day. I practiced SOVT a lot which made my mix even stronger and further inspired me to sing more as I really enjoy singing as it was always my dream and I really felt like I could really pull it off because of the things I was now able to do vocally. I am male singer currently 20 years old and consider myself a tenor because I have a very wide range, and I can very easily sing up to a C5, my highest note was a whistle which was a B6 that I was only able to do once and my lowest note is an F#1 which I can hit with vocal fry with pretty clear clarity.
    A few weeks ago however this all changed😓....
    For some reason I was having a lot of trouble hitting my high notes in mixed register with the clarity I had before. No matter how much I warmed up my voice would crack endlessly. I even started having difficulty singing through my passagio which I thought I fixed because I know how essential it is when singing through your range. Every time I would sing my would literally just crack so much which it never did up until this point, and I really started to get very frustrated. My voice would involuntarily go straight into vocal fry in some instances and I had very little control over this so I could not sing as freely and clear as I used to. In addition, I have been having terrible acid reflux during this period as well but I didn't think the acid reflux had any impact on my vocal performance so I just treated myself by drinking more water by my acid reflux wouldn't go away.
    For the first time today I actually checked my own vocal cords with a torch just to see and it turns out I have red tissue growths on my vocal cord right in the center lining and I seriously believe I have vocal nodules. I decided to stop singing in my high mix for a while and hopefully overtime they go away.
    Sorry for writing such a long comment but this just means so much to me and my dream has always been to sing and this experience has really discouraged me so much. It really hurt to not be able to hit my high notes with clarity anymore and hope that this is in fact the case so that I can recover because when I think about it I have been overdoing my voice a lot because I have been trying to sing in the 5th octave to extend my range but it seems that has some real consequences now.
    I hope I get through this and get my singing voice back.

      Unfortunately, this cannot go without a therapist. There are specific exercises that need to be done, and singing must be paused until the issue (nodules) are healed. That is the best option and seeing a ThroatNoseEarn-Doctor IS important in a case of problems with the voice. I know from personal experience.

      @@BigDome1 Thanks for your concern man. I am happy to say I don't have that issue anymore. I did however, take a break from singing for about a full month and went back to the drawing board. Turns out I was not singing from my diaphragm which was placing too much strain on my cords. Right now I am singing better and freely like I never did before. Technique , Technique, that's what I learned to never neglect.

    • @BigDome1
      @BigDome1 Год назад

      @@ruantristancarlinsky3851 When you were having these problems, did your voice make a kind of vibrating sound at certain frequencies? That's what I'm going through currently with mine.

    • @ruantristancarlinsky3851
      @ruantristancarlinsky3851 Год назад

      @@BigDome1 Yes if that's how you describe it. I couldn't hold notes above middle C. Very shaky like you say because sound is supposed to flow freely and clearly from your diaphragm through your cords to produce a stable, clear consistent sound.
      Currently my voice is in great condition all because of deeper focus on diaphramatic supoort when singing.
      If you habe any problems in your throat and can't maitain stable notes it means you are using the wrong muscles, namely throat muscles instead of just your diaphragm.
      You should NEVER feel any discomfort in your throat. NEVER.
      I always heard this and thought maybe the vocal teachers are exaggerating but now I can genuinely stand behind it.
      I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS EXERCISE.
      Trust me, Practice it consistently every day. It will help engage your diaphragm and improve your technique a TON!
      Eventually you should reach a point where you can sing with ZERO throat discomfort.

I also was a teacher for 35 years. Like you I also have acid reflex and post nasal drip which I take medicine for. I tried vocal therapy but didn't have much success. I really didn't give it much of a chance, and after watching your video, I guess I should work more on my vocal therapy techniques. Your video came truly inspirational for me because I am going through the exact same thing.
    I’ve suffered from post nasal drip since I was a teenager and although I was diagnosed I was told it was allergic. I went through music school and did my major in classical singing, I became a teacher for both little children and middle schoolers and worked non stop, until I got sick really badly and was dyphonic for almost 4 weeks, the longest time in my life I haven’t been able to mute a word. I recovered from the other symptoms but my voice would always cut at certain points. It was weird because even though I could still sing my voice suddenly left me when doing a specific note and would come back in others, I was also terrible exhausted after a day and I couldn’t keep singing. It took me a month to be able to see an specialist only to be told I had nodules :( I want to believe I’ll get better as you did and am trying to see a speech therapist.

    Hello Rosie, I am a new subscriber and I am so happy to see this video you made about nodules a few years ago!
    I had them many, many moon's ago - one nodule and one cyst and yes I agree with you - it is intriguing and a special moment when you see your vocal cords for the very first time. I recently learned that as women our vocal cords are very much linked to our throat chakras and I think that the vocal folds do actually look like the cervix!
    In fact, the first video that I watched was the one where you share information on the connection between our hip joints and our jaw joint. So fascinating isn't it!
    I unfortunately was given really bad advice when I had my nodules looked at and the internet did not really exist at the time.
    I was advised not to talk for three months! What a crazy journey that was! I was then booked into surgery. I have pretty much avoided singing for over 20 years and deep in my heart I would like to really learn how to sing and sing again!
    It is a bit of a struggle with my will power and my emotions, BUT I would really like to explore sound as a tool for healing - such as healing through channeling certain frequencies through the Sacred gate that is the voice!
    So thank you for sharing so warmly Rose and it is my hope that watching your videos will be one of the pillars of support to guiding me back to one of my greatest gifts!
    Plus, isn't fruit tea awesome! My son drinks it room temperature---healthier than fruit juice for sure! 💗(✿◡‿◡).
    Have a lovely day!
    The Purest Light to you, Illura.

I’m pretty sure I have nodules as I’m showing a lot of the symptoms but I am worried where I’ve left it so long and continued to put stress on the folds I may need an op 😭 Do you have any advice on vocal rehabilitation after an operation?

      I really hope your appointment goes well. There could be multiple diagnosis' so you just don't know until you get a scope. Vocal rehabilitation is very personal and is completely down to your healthcare professional. If it's nodules, they often won't operate but will give you speech therapy instead. Whatever the outcome, make sure you take care of your vocal health in the long run!

I'm in the States, and referrals tend to work a bit more efficiently (if you have good insurance!). I'm pretty sure that I could very well have nodules. Hello dear Vox Yoga...one year ago I woke up one morning grabbed my guitar and tried to sing....I noticed full of terror that all my voice was gone...felt like I had a sore throat combined with a -vocal fry like-sound...
    The effort to produce the tones was much greater...
    I am a bass/baritone and I could sing from F2-F4 easily...
    My range became C2-G3(!!!)and up to this I was struggling to reach C4...
    So I visited the special doctor and he procceded in laryngoacopy...
    Nodules were diagnosed...small but they were causing big trouble...
    After voice economy and vocal lessons became much better got my range back...but the "vocal fry" sound never dissapeared and sometimes I loose the clarity of the tone...

    so last year, i remember singing panic at the disco songs and trying to replicate it, so like shouting and stuff. after that, that's when my voice starts to change. i thought my head voice was broken because it wouldnt work sometimes. and now, i tried to rest it as much as possible and did it for 3 days. my head voice was pretty normal but when i sang again, i felt tension in my throat and my head voice was getting broken again. i believe i also lost range in my head voice because of what i did last year in the song. could it be just strain or damaged voice/nodules?

The whole experience has been rather scary. I am not a singer nor performer … so not sure what caused them. That said, I have a job in sales and have had an unfortunate run of colds this year with coughs and post nasal drip. The Drs were treating me for possible allergies, bacterial nose infections not sure what was causing the post nasal drip. I now think I could have silent reflux. Is that what you had Rosie/anyone? Hello Rosie, I wonder if you can help me with some much needed advice. Long story short, I started singing about 4 years ago and I developed vocal nodes about 2 years ago due to lack of technique and formal training whatsoever. I have seen a doctor and I will follow treatment and do some vocal therapy. I'm not sure how I should proceed forward. My goal would be to be able to sing both clean and aggressive, but I'm not aiming for extremes (such as crystal clear cleans or low growls). Rather a...rough Sully Erna sort of approach.
    What would be the steps I should take and what to focus on in order to protect my voice? I'm only singing as a hobby, so I'm wondering what should I learn first, what would be the essentials, and what can I skip learning for my goals (I cannot invest enough time for an exhaustive approach to singing).
    Thank you!

I also have a toddler, so I am constantly talking. Shall I try some vocal warmups still, or just try not to speak at all? All I can advise is what I did in the meantime....try and cut down on any teaching hours where possible, rest when possible, steam as much as possible (within reason!) then straw phonation and SOVT work to warm up the voice in a therapeutic way. Everyone is different so it's really listening to your body and your voice and not being afraid to take time out. Good luck (and sucking a lozenge? rubbish advise!!)

I know my voice is worst in the morning - so I write this now, my voice is croaky and sore - could that be reflux? I just feel I'm constantly waiting for help and time is ticking away, but I'm no better. I have a job interview soon and I'm sad because I know it won't be a true version of me. Thanks.

    • @VoxYoga
      @VoxYoga  2 года назад

      @@meganstrange5836 That's strange as an ENT can usually see evidence of reflux on a scope. I think a gastro referral is for an actual diagnosis of GERD but I think an ENT can often see LPR (I may be wrong). Hello! I've had an issue since for a year and months now and I'm reaaaally desperate. I really hope you can help me :(. This whole thing even makes me wanna give up singing once and for all. The whole thing started when I was trying to sing falsetto and high notes (not belting or something like that, just high) and the big mistake was trying to hit those notes only with my throat (that is, that I didn't rely on my nose at all cuz I thought I sounded too nasal, so I was doing everything only with my throat). Long story short, It hurt for 3 days in a row and a weird sound started when I swallowed. It sounds like a little branch breaking; I call it a "crack" sound. If I touch the upper part of the throat, I can literally feel it. In the begging, it was hard to sing high notes and my voice sounded kinda breathy. As the time went by, it got better, but the "crack" is still there. I tend to hear it more when my head is in certain positions. Have you ever seen something like that? Is it better to stop singing? Will it get worse and even cause nodules?
    I hope I made sense. English is not my first language. Thanks so much for reading❤.

    How about mam if my voice hoarse for 5days do you think this is vocal nodules?

    • @VoxYoga
      @VoxYoga  2 года назад +1

      We normally advise that if problems persist for 2-3 weeks to go and get it checked. It could just be laryngitis/tiredness at the moment but you're right to keep an eye on it.

      Honestly for me I found gaviscon advance was the only medicine that helped. It's really seeing what your doctor advises and how your body responds to it.

      It's very personal for everyone but speech therapy is the recommended recovery for nodules if surgery isn't needed. Best of luck

      I'm so sorry to hear that. Did the doctor that diagnosed you offer any treatment plans? It would be very beneficial to see a speech therapist. In the meantime, I'd recommend steaming the voice and doing gentle SOVT exercises 🙂

    You speak with a fry. Could this be what causes it? I try not to live in fry.

    • @VoxYoga
      @VoxYoga  Год назад

      I would not say I speak with fry, it naturally comes into peoples speech at times and this is not a problem. It can creep in when we are tired, it is present in some dialects, and is often used it contemporary singing.
      To maintain a healthy voice, we aim to be able to speak/sing in a clear tone, If someone was persistently speaking in vocal fry, it could contribute to nodules, but on the other hand, fry can also be used as a therapeutic tool.
