    I need help. I haven't been able to make a living from my voice for five years since I lost it. I got my degree in music and worked my whole life, won many awards, and lost it due to acid reflux and overuse. Please help. Your video is posted on my birthday. Please, I feel like I lost my identity, everything I worked for, and my happiness. It was my life and my pride and my contribution to this world. I am nothing without it, just a shell of a human. I would do anything just to be able to have that easy feeling again singing whatever I want, whatever style, whenever.

    I had vocal nodule surgery 3 years ago, fell into a deep depression when my voice did not return. My previous habits, partly due to ignorance, partly due to undiagnosed & untreated severe mental health conditions lead to me over-working w/the voice, i.e. actor by day, bartender by night, singer for bands & gigs, alcohol & substance abuse, & never having been taught correct technique left my voice feeling damaged & terrible. Was hopeful vocal nodule surgery and working on myself & the bad habits would yield some sort of result and that I could sing again. Haven't been singing for years now, lost all hope for being able to sing again, considered just quitting on life as I can't sing, which has always been my passion. Even talking makes my voice start to crack, and it really seems my range and voice are entirely gone...used to have a wide range and a high soprano pitch, can't even hit an alto pitch without my voice whistling/disappearing...is there a way to retrain the voice or is it simply hopeless at this point? I'd love to be able to sing again now that I'm on the better end of being stable and no longer abuse myself & my voice as before. I feel I don't know where to start as I don't want to damage my voice any further, but it almost feels as if it's a lost cause and I've no idea what to do or what's right/wrong for my voice at this point in terms on where to go from here.

    I performed in bands for 28 years. In 2006, I had an endoscopic exam on my throat due to acid reflux. The doctor who did the procedure said that I basically choked and coughed during the entire procedure. (Another physician said that was likely due to incorrect insertion of the endoscope.) When I returned to work 3 nights later, my throat was killing me. Notes that I'd been able to hit all my life suddenly weren't there. Getting anywhere close to them resulted in feeling (and sounding) like someone was choking me. After about 2 more years of limited use, I finally retired. I've lost 4 notes off my full voice, and completely lost my falsetto. At one point, I was able to do "Pride" by U2 in full voice, and had a strong and very functional falsetto.
    My question is, at the age of 55 and having been out of the game for several years now, is there anything I can do? I'm not looking to gig again, but would like to be able to sing for my own enjoyment.

    ‌Sir, I have been suffering from this problem for the last 1 year. I have seen many doctors. But I did not recover well. Sir I will tell you everything in full details today. Last year I was sing with deep voice tone. I keep singing with lower voice on high notes about 2-3 days in a row. I feel in my throat something went wrong. But i didn’t stop this shit. Sir, singing with lower voice was harmful for my vocal cord. At the end of 3 days, as a result of singing like this in the evening i was singing like that and it feels like I am bleeding from inside throat and suddenly I feel sore throat. Since then I have not been able to speak and sing normally. Sometimes I have trouble swallowing and feel dizzy inside. my voice sound different in different days. sometimes voice sound quite good but after few days it change and i can't talk well. It's a cycle. Sometimes i feel tightness in throat. Sir, do I have a chance to get a vocal cord scar? No growth was seen in my Vocal Cord through FOL test. The doctors said I had an infection in my left vocal cord. It is not recovering. I Don't have any nodules or polyps. My fear is that if there is vocal cord scar then it will not recover. Tell me something Last 1 year i can't talk normally and that's why i am in depression right now. I Just want to know what's going on my vocal cords after singing too low? :(

No sound at all out of those two tones maybe just one tone. Im using the straw, jogging a mile a day, counting to 100 using my plexus. Iv only been on the straw a few days now but i am doing it softly through the straw but Im feeling a little hopeless the straw use to heal way faster. I hated my own singing voice so I tried changing it without having any knowledge during that time that vocal damages can occur. I didn't like it that my voice sounded nasally high and it sounded annoying. (It wasn't always nasally high though, it's time to time.)
    I was 12-13 years old during that time, I'm now 16 and I struggle to reach notes like I used to before. My chest voice was strong, and can transition to head voice when singing in mezzo, (I sing in mezzo/alto) and though I don't think this is included but my breathing control was also really good, now I feel like dying every time I sing. It's been 3 years since I have been trying to practice to get back up. My voice would become hoarse, raspy and then hit other pitches out of nowhere and it's hard to control, and my voice will crack hard out of nowhere too though I've never had that before.
    My voice had also gotten deeper as I got older. Not just that, I don't know if I have vocal damages or vocal nodules. (I haven't discovered that vocal nodules exists to this day. 🙄) I searched up 'vocal nodules symptoms' and I can say that almost 100% of my voice really matched the vocal nodules symptoms.
    Since I've had rasps, hoarseness and a scratchy voice along with having a feeling that there's a lump in the middle of my throat, I'm assuming that I have vocal nodules.
    It's been 3 years since I've had it and it can sometimes get frustrating when I try to adjust to my old singing. I've definitely improved my singing but I'm scared to overwork it so I don't practice as much now which makes me sad.
    I've started practicing again but I want some tips on how should I start singing healthily and how I can adjust to singing like my old self again. If there's any please so tell them.

      hey, ive just been diagnosed with nodules and yes, you can. You're clapping your folds together aggressively. Try to vocalise up and down lightly to remove muscous. Also, lets see an ENT please.. to be safe and sure theres nothing wrong. If you're producing mucous, it might be your body saying that something is wrong.

      It’s because you’re using bad technique man. You have to get a teacher that builds your voice stronger and trains you into mixing and not belting and pulling up chest voice. Another thing is that you need to get your Chest voice stronger and it’ll balance your voice out. Theirs no tricks and bullshit that work, just train with a vocal teacher once a week and practice all the exercises they give you everyday, don’t skip lessons, it takes years to get to a level that won’t damage your voice and you won’t be worried about trashing your voice

    Its really hard for me to relax my larynx, it's been for a while but I always wanted to push.. now i have the result. And as soon as it comes to higher notes i start to worry about my larynx and I feel tension again. And if I don't use my larynx i always push out too much breath.

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  3 года назад

      A big part of getting the voice to want to "relax" is actually STRENGTHENING. So there is a process of effort that doesn't feel relaxed to develop the strength so that the voice can then operate efficiently and "relaxed". This is why I don't really use the word "relaxed" because it makes people think "no effort". There is effort in singing but it needs to be coordinated in the right way. It sounds like you're going back and forth.

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  3 года назад +4

      If you have unhealthy technique in your chest voice it can wear out your falsetto and make it disappear which can then negatively affect your full voice range. Try making a falsetto sound on a very very quiet GEE GEE sound or GOO GOO. The "g" can sometimes make it easier to grip onto the note better, it may take you several times until you get any kind of sound to come out. Try it in a comfortable range. Keep doing that every day until you can grab onto the notes better.

    If I have been experiencing vocal damage (it feels like my voice is at less capacity than what it can be. Specially head voice) for the past moths, but I just can’t seem to recover, what can I do? I don’t tense or yell or anything when singing, but I might be overusing my voice for sure. What is a healthy amount of time to sing per week, and how can I readjust my schedule?

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  3 года назад +1

      how much you can sing will greatly depend on your technique, because as your technique gets better there will be less wear and tear which means it won't take as long to recover each day. If your technique has faults in it then you'll wear it out pretty fast and it will take longer to recover.

      Hi, When I work with singers who have this problem I never get them to actually STOP singing. I retrain the technique in such a way that it doesn't make the damage worse, that way the voice starts healing while you are using it. You learn to use the voice in a way that doesn't cause the problem to come back. At some point you'll find that you don't get the symptoms of the nodules anymore and that's how you know the problem is gone.

      @philmoufarrege  2 года назад

      I've never heard your voice and I can't diagnose your voice through text. But either way the answer would be the same regardless - you need proper training to repair your voice and ensure this doesn't happen again. This is something I am very successful at helping singers with who work with me.

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  4 года назад +2

      If it's just a swelling then with rest everything should be fine in like a week or so. However there is a chance that your voice is actually WEAKER from the cold + the time off singing. If your voice is weaker even if your voice is well rested you'll not be able to reach those notes as easily as you could before or possibly not even at all. If your voice has gotten weaker which is very likely you'd need to retrain your voice to strengthen it again. Why? Because most singers just sing with "what they've got" and don't really know HOW they got that strength in the first place, and so if they lose it they don't know how to get it back because they never had to build it initially.

    I sing with pretty good technique, so how easy is it to get nodules? And is it possible that what I am experiencing is something else?

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  5 лет назад +4

      They are harder to get than what people think, but you can get debilitating symptoms very quickly which can limit your voice just as much as nodules and then nodules are the final version of that prolonged stress. If you're experiencing a lot of fatigue/tension then it could indicate your singing workload is way too high or that there are some issues in your technique that you're unaware of that are robbing you of the stamina and workload you COULD be doing. The closer to your limit you sing the more it is likely your form will break down and your voice will fatigue faster. You can send over a recording and I can have a listen here (just sign up for the email list and you'll get my email): philmoufarrege.com
      What I listen for is compensatory patterns similar to what I showed in this video clip of Mariah Carrey. Compensatory patterns are what tend to indicate there is an issue and the voice is going to tire prematurely like that.

      Hi Abby I took a look at your clips on your channel. First of all GOOD ON YOU! As a whole you approach your voice pretty good, but when you get to big high notes such as "inside" at 1:02 on your Reflection song, when you hit the vowels like that and hold them like that, that will definitely wear out your voice fast. The way you hit those kind of strong high notes need to be done in a different way. The way you approach your vowels you don't tend to close them enough and you keep them a bit too open especially on that word "inside", so the vowel wants to spread too much which closes off your throat and causes your larynx to yank up. Your vowel would need to shade differently than that in order to keep your throat open and connection to your belly.

    Hey Phil, I was wondering if I could get your advice. For the past 3 years, I have been completely self-teaching myself singing, and it’s gone well. I’ve developed a semi-decent voice, and can sing well for the most part. However, I’d say for the past month, I was trying to sing some pretty demanding Queen songs that I believe forced my voice to compensate with methods using bad technique. After a few weeks, my voice began to feel strained, but not to the point to where it was too bad. But as the weeks went on, I continued like an idiot, and this resulted in me losing basically the entirety of my falsetto. I used to be able to hit a D5 comfortably, but now that seems impossible. I also noticed that when speaking I’d get fatigued very quickly, so I took the hint and took a few days off. My voice started to heal, which I periodically checked for 10-15 seconds every other day, but that has seemed to upset it a bit. Since then, I’ve now stopped checking/ singing completely, and am speaking softly when necessary. I’m also drinking lots of water to make sure I’m not dehydrated. Do you think I have the possibility of nodules, or does this sound more like a serious case of vocal inflammation/ strain?

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  4 года назад +1

      I would need to hear you to be sure, but it is likely you've just caused swelling that can heal by itself by avoiding what caused it. This might mean taking a few days rest. Now what this means also is that by you singing super softly and speaking super softly and resting from strong singing, your voice is going to get weaker and this brings a new problem - when you go back to singing you may notice that notes that used to feel easy will likely feel far more difficult now, and you will be tempted to use bad technique to sing those notes because it will be hard for you to accept that your voice is not in the same place it was before. this can then damage your voice again, and basically it becomes a vicious cycle where your range keeps diminishing. So essentially your voice will start regressing if you don't know what you're doing and don't know how to build it back up. singing is not just technique, it's a STRENGTH technique. Strength needs to be built and MAINTAINED....ESPECIALLY if you're singing material like Queen.

    • @jmac3223
      @jmac3223 3 года назад

      Phil Moufarrege Well, good news and bad news. I’m not becoming fatigued much anymore when speaking. I can speak fine for the most part, which I think the rest will come back soon. However, I attempted singing a little bit yesterday and to my surprise, it feels like my singing voice is still pretty bad. The pitch was very hard to control, and I found that it was as very weak. It felt as if I was doing everything I had done before, but my voice simply didn’t want to work. However, when singing very, very softly, I could sustain it for a little bit longer. I fear that either my voice has been damaged in some sort, or as you’ve mentioned before, I’ve forgotten how to sing. This really sucks as I’m only 16, and singing has helped me tremendously. Would you recommend seeing an ENT? I’d book a Skype lesson with you, but I don’’t have enough money as it’s much more in my currency. Any help I’d appreciated. I really don’t want to lose my singing voice forever.

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  3 года назад

      All an ENT will really be able to do is just confirm whether or not you have some form of swelling or damage - something I can do simply by hearing you. In my opinion this is irrelevant because the answer is the same regardless: you need to retrain the voice so that the damage can heal and that the voice can strengthen and prevent damage from happening again. I recommend saving up and even just getting one session with me. In that one single session you will know exactly what you need to be doing to move forward with your voice and stop this happening again. it will be worthwhile for you.

    I’m interested in booking lessons to fix what feels like inflammation in my whistle register. This came up after 8 months of chronic post nasal drip. That area of my throat is sore right now. How long should I vocal rest before starting a lesson?

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  2 года назад +2

      Hi Amy, thanks for writing. I guess it depends what has caused the issue. It may be more than just the post nasal drip, while that may have exasperated some issues, I had a look at your "christmas time is here" where you sing in falsetto a lot around the E5 area, and the way you approach your falsetto there might be causing some issues for how your higher falsetto (flageolet) and your whistle responds. Meaning, that airy falsetto can weaken it if you aren't careful. Chest voice can have an affect too. So the way I look at the voice is really as a whole as each component can have a big effect on other sounds. For example, getting really good at my chest voice actually really helped my high falsetto open up more and become way more clear and strong. Sounds funny but things like that helped me see how holistic the voice has to be approached. Because of these complications it can be tricky to get solid answers online, working with me in a lesson is where we can pinpoint what's going on with far greater accuracy. I would say in your case just rest until the soreness isn't holding you back from training and then we can start from there with a lesson.

    Looking at videos now, I think I’m realizing that I’ve had bad vocal techniques all my life. I use a lot of tension now and a few years back I went to Disney world and screamed all day and my singing voice has never been the same. I don’t think I have nodules, because my voice is fine and has never changed, but then again I always clear my throat because of excessive mucous coating my voice. It may be my diet and eating and drinking too much dairy but I’m not sure. I can’t go to an ENT because I don’t have enough money. I use to be able to hit really high notes easily. Ever since Disney world I can’t even scream. I’ve lost my upper register. Is there something I can do to improve my range again and get my voice back? • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  4 года назад

      Try taking 2 days off and then come back to your normal routine and warm up your voice. Make sure all the parts of your voice are working - make sure your falsetto is nice and clear and strong, then make sure your loud voice that you would use to call out or shout is nice and solid and clear with no breathiness. Then make sure you can sing in a very soft chest voice. Then make sure you can sing in a medium volume chest voice. Warm up all of those coordinations thoroughly and then your voice should be in a good spot. If you're struggling to get any one of those coordinations working then that will likely be the reason why your voice isn't working the way you expect it too.

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  Год назад

      yes it could be. A good way to check is to stop singing for a few days and if you're still hoarse it's likely not singing related. However, if you speak a lot during the day it could also be from faulty speaking technique too. So you'd want to take a few days off, and take note at what times you are feeling hoarseness. If it's from speaking/singing you'll feel it either during singing or right after or it will just gradually worsen. Then as you stop singing/speaking it will start recovering. with acid reflux, you might wake up with hoarseness or it might happen randomly at different times of the day like after a meal or something even if you hadn't been singing/talking.

      Hi Vishal, sign up to the email list at philmoufarrege.com and you can send me a clip there. phonatory gap is just a fancy word for saying your vocal folds aren't closing properly, all it means is the strength in your voice needs to be trained back up again. this is common after a cold, the voice can get weaker and the amount of effort you used to use to sing which USED to be adequate is now no longer adequate. Imagine if you are lifting 200lbs and it feels easy, but you don't exercise for 6 months and then try 200lbs. It will FEEL heavier, and will require MORE EFFORT than you remembered. To retrain your voice you will need to use a more concentrated effort to close your vocal folds.
