Vocal Function Exercises (Voice Therapy)

  • Vocal Function Exercises (VFE) are therapeutic tasks used to strengthen and increase coordination of the muscles of voice production. VFE was originally developed by Dr. Joseph Stemple. The treatment protocol for VFE is broken into four main exercises. In combination, these tasks can effectively “strengthen and balance the laryngeal musculature, increase or improve vocal fold adduction, and coordinate the subsystems of voice production.”
    When performing all exercises, make sure to use proper posture and to use diaphragmatic breathing. All exercises should be performed twice, 2 times per day.
    To complement vocal function exercises, vocal straw exercises can also be performed:

    I worked with Dr Stemple 25 years ago and got my voice in shape for a musical. Lost my voice for years after stress and illness. Using the singing straw and these exercises is bringing my over 70 voice back. Amazing.

    Dr. Stemple was my voice therapist 30 years ago. I am now a voice therapist myself. Just some friendly feedback: Vocal function exercises are supposed to be done quietly with hyper forward focus at the lips (similar to whistle lips, quietly blowing the sound through the lips - but with a clear tone, not a breathy tone).

    I just tried one set and omg, lessening in serious hoarseness and gained an extra bit of upper range back, I've been stuck in lower range whispering and extreme hoarseness for weeks, really really impressive. Will be working these from now on

    This video demo is very helpful in the sense it corroborates the speech therapy exercises given to me by a Speech Therapist which i am doing now daily 2 times- one in the morning & 2nd in the night, sometime s i do 3 times also.. Predominant exercises for me are: 1. Say 'Aaaaaaa' in single breath to the extent possible ( 3 times). 2) Say Eeeeeeeeee ( 3 times).(3) say Oooooo OR Huuuu..- 4 times.(4) Say Hooooo..something like Ho while pronouncing Horse..(5) say Om....(6) Say Hum....
    (7) say PA TA KA...PA TA KA...in single breath.- 3 times.(8) say KHA KHA KHA...3 times (9) say TTA TTA TTA (10) say 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10......starting 1 at lowest pitch and gradually raising the pitch for 2. 3, 4, etc to the highest possible number..
    Similarly, say (11) Aa- lowest, Aa- slightly higher, Aa- still higher and so on to the highest ( if the throat pains at the highest then don't go to that high pitch).This need not be in single breath, take as many breaths as comfortable.
    Similarly continue this for alphabets Eeee Huuuu Hooo.
    Another very important thing is if the left side vocal cord is effected ( paralysed), then turn the neck to extreme left side and say all the above alphabets including Om and Hum.....this exercise is more important as said by my Speech Therapist to me.... I am doing the exercises systematically ( this is important) daily since 6 weeks. There is very good improvement in my voice For me it may take more time considering my age...

      I had been gone for laser surgery for removal of vocal cord cyst 25 days back. Can i go with all these exercises

    Hi! I have a nodule either on or near the larynx which significantly impacts my speech. I had surgery on it because It had gotten so bad you could hardly hear me speak at all, after surgery my voice improved emphatically but today about 3 years later its about back to where it was before surgery. I had taken voice therapy a little while ago but didn't finish and now that isn't an option. The treatment goal was to speak in a different way to not put so much abuse on the nodule in the hopes that it would recede and heal. We started with doing exercises like the with making an E sound, just trying to move everything up in the throat so that it didn't put so much strain on the nodule. Do you have any suggestions for what to look up or any exercises that specialize in reducing nodules on the larynx? I'd really appreciate it!

    I am having a very heavy voice and low pitched after singing high and it has been almost a year and my voice is not coming back I feel tightness around my Adam apple when I try to sing , and when i speak for long . What should I do

    Hello! I have developed vocal cord insufficiency. I am doing some vocal exercises with not much effect. Could these exercises improve my condition? If it is not paresis does it heal?Thank you!

    A quick question. Two sessions each day, do every exercise twice each session. Does it mean that one supposed to do the first exercise twice, the second twice, et cetera, or to do all of them once and then all of them once again? Or it doesn't matter?

    Mam , as I Have been through chronic laryngitis , so doctor said to me to follow complete voice rest for 14 days , so are these exercise helpful right Now or I do them after 14 days ?
