  • In today's video I stay overnight at the Anchorage Hotel in Babbacombe, Torquay.
    I've got a budget deal from Booking.com - but will it be great value, or will I get what I have paid for?
    I'll show you the good, the bad and the breakfast, which leaves me wondering if the chef is called BASIL!!

    The Monty Python team including Cleese, visited Torquay in May 1970 to film sketches for their hugely popular TV cult series, Monty Python’s Flying Circus. It was whilst staying at the Gleneagles Hotel in Asheldon Road (sadly now demolished) that the team first encountered the hotel proprietor and retired naval officer, Donald Sinclair and his wife, Beatrice.
    During their stay the Monty Python team experienced first-hand the eccentricities of Mr Sinclair. Most notably he berated Terry Gilliam for using his knife and fork incorrectly and threw Eric Idle’s bag over a wall believing it contained a bomb (which actually turned out to be a ticking alarm clock). As a result of Sinclair’s unconventional behaviour many of the Monty Python team bolted to the nearby comfortable surroundings of the Imperial Hotel. However, John Cleese decided to stay on and take notes and he invited his then wife, Connie Booth, who would become the co-writer of the series, to join him. This was to become the beginning of one of the most famous moments in British comedy history, with Donald and Beatrice Sinclair providing the inspiration for the iconic TV husband and wife characters.

      I didn’t know that! I assumed it was unlikely to have been filmed in Torquay as it would have been a bit out of the way back in the day, but didn’t know it was in Henley. Thanks for letting me know, and your kind comment!

      One popular myth is that the hotel shown in the opening shot of Fawlty Towers was based in Torquay. It was in fact filmed outside the Wooburn Grange Country Club at Bourne End, Buckinghamshire. Unfortunately, in 1991 the building was badly damaged by fire and subsequently demolished with eight homes later being built on the site.

    Very little wrong with any of that. Clean and comfortable room with en suite and breakfast for what you paid is brilliant. I would happily stay there, a few decor issues never bother me as long as it's clean and everything works as it should. Shame the breakfast was a bit of a let down, if the toaster was quicker you could have had sliced tomato on toast, lovely. I'm at the Derby cricket ground Travelodge on Friday, having the evening meal there too. I've eaten there before and it was very good so fingers crossed. Not having breakfast as going to an Xmas market not far from Derby and there will be plenty of grub there.If Winchester is within striking distance they have a Xmas fair at the Cathedral until the end of the weekend which is supposed to be good.

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  6 месяцев назад +1

      Where’s the market you’re heading to then? I know they have a good one at Chatsworth House which isn’t too far from Derby right? I am planning to take Mrs Greeno and the kids to the Winchester market on Monday Dec 18th (it runs until Thurs 21st this year). We went last year and it was really nice, a great venue sat in the cathedral grounds.
      As for the Anchorage Hotel, 100% agree that I have no qualms about the quality of the accommodation for the price (although I expect it’s a lot more pricey at more peak times). Would happily stay there agin, just maybe take breakfast elsewhere 😀

      Interesting to hear the view of a local. I think, like many seaside towns, there has been a slow decline over many years. Places like Blackpool, Weston-S-M etc. suffering the same. And for towns so reliant on the tourism/service industry for employment, housing and everything else is crazy expensive. Interesting to note about the chef, if he was a bit dodgy then I am glad he wasn’t cooking my breakfast 😂 I appreciate you taking the time to give some context to what’s going on in the town for me.
