The Constitution of India does not allow holding Indian citizenship and citizenship of a foreign country simultaneously. Based on the recommendation of the High Level committee on Indian Diaspora, the Government of India decided to grant Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI).
Overseas Citizenship of India is a form of permanent residency available to people of Indian origin and their spouses which allows them to live and work in India indefinitely.

Benefits of having OCI:

Multiple entry, multi-purpose lifelong visa to visit India;
1. Exemption from reporting to Police authorities for any length of stay in India
2. Parity with NRIs in financial, economic and educational fields except in the acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties.
3. Registered Overseas Citizen of India shall be treated at par with Non Resident-Indian in the matter of inter-country adoption of Indian children.
4. Registered Overseas Citizens of India shall be treated at par with resident Indian nationals in the matter of tariffs in air fares in domestic sectors in India.
5. Registered Overseas Citizens of India shall be charged the same entry fee as domestic Indian visitors to visit national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in India
6. Parity with Non-Resident Indian in respect of entry fees to be charged for visiting the national monuments, historical sites and museums in India
7. Pursuing the following professions in India, in pursuance of the provisions contained in the relevant Acts, namely:-
- Doctors, Dentists, Nurses and Pharmacists
- Advocates
- Architects
- Chartered accountants

Note for Vancouver consulate jurisdiction candidates. The rules are not uniform and equal to Toronto/Ottawa. For OCI, only one draft in favor of “BLS INTERNATIONAL SERVICES CANADA INC.” of $345+7.4=352.40 is required for Vancouver jurisdiction as of Sep 30, 2022.

May I please know what's the process of reversing the original drop off payment?
Some information in this video is now outdated. For instance,
1. BLS now asks for original Indian Passport / Surrender certificate which they later return (via Courier) after verification.
2. Payment of BLS fees can be done by card.
Greta Video, a great tip for saving money, but if I send the application through Purolator by finding out Purolator-outbound service near our home,, that is for outbound service so that our application reach to the BLS Office, but how BLS, will be sending us OCI, when we are not taking inbound service, or do we or is there any way we can collect it.
Hi, to get your document back from BLS to your house you should pay for the service at BLS website only.

2 quick questions:

When we directly go to Purolator for shipping, with outbound shipping the package will go. But Concern about how I will receive back the OCI?
Also, when directly call to BLS, they are charging more for Purolator which shows you $25 less on the BLS website. You know how they convey you to pay via the link the send on your email.
In Application fees tab they mentioned this, see below:
Postal Applications:
Kindly Provide Demand Draft/Money order only in favor of BLS International Services Canada Inc., which includes Consular fee +ICWF Charge + BLS Service charges + Return courier fees , to send back your processed application.
Return courier fees to be added in Demand Draft only if you have not paid online
Hi, Yes you can send your documents through Purolator. For getting the OCI application back you have to contact BLS and pay the return courier charges. BLS will add the value added services by default. These services are optional and you have to tell BLS explicitly that you want to opt out of these services. I hope that helps!

I wanted to apply for OCI for my kids. booking courier with Purolator through BLS is a complete Rip off as BLS is overcharging. Can you plz explain do you have to submit any original documents ? As per BLS check list only original document required is child birth certificate but when we contacted call center they explained to send all the original documents including parents passport, pr card, Co -pr and marriage certificate. Its so confusing.

Hi, No we were not asked for any originals. Yes the checklist mentions Original Documents must be given but you are not supposed to give any originals. You have to self attest that documents. I hope that helps 😊

Thanks for the informative Video Sid. I have a question regarding the photo, I am applying for 4 OCI for the family and I am confused about whether 2 photos (physical) are required or as you mentioned in the video - only 1 photo is required. I would appreciate it if you could confirm.
Hi, you need to upload 1 photo per person online and use the same photo per person along with the application. So only 1 photo is required. You can scan it and use the same for uploading purposes. I hope that helps 🙂

Great tip on the cost savings for the photo! Staples website says 9-10 days, do you know if it really takes that long, or did you get it earlier?
Also, the OCI requirement is not having a mandatory requirement of the shops (staples in this case) location stamp and date at the back of the picture, but it is for Canadian citizenship photo requirement. Do you know if staples would put their stamp with the address and date at the back of the print? Thanks a lot!

You can call Staples and see if they can process it faster. Alternatively you can go to Walmart and get it printed yourself at kiosk. I hope that helps 😊

Hi Sid, I have been reading the questions and comments about original documents, that are required to be sent (as mentioned in website) along with OCI Application. But some people said you needn't have to send any original document such as Canadian passport, cancelled Indian passport, Canadian Citizenship Certificate and so on. If I send all the photocopies is there any chance they will ask me to send the original documents? Many thanks in advance!!
Hi, you don't need to send any original documents. You just need to self attest and send copies of the mentioned documents. I hope that helps 😊

On BLS website, it says
"Postal applications can be sent only to the Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver application Service Centers."
As OCI postal application from Mississsauga address, should It go for BLS Toronto ? or Can I send OCI postal application to BLS Brampton?
Q2: On Website says BLS DD is ....Processing Fee: $7.4+ Courier fee
In actual how much is for BLS DD?
Is it DD of CAD 7.4 and self addressed printed prepaid return envelope?

1. For Mississauga based OCI applications, you should choose BLS Brampton.
2. I have mentioned the DD amounts in this video. You should be paying for return courier separately.

Hi, we attached only our PR card (both front and back). No need of CoPR.
Purolator has partnership with BLS. So all you need to do is tell them that you want to send this application to BLS Brampton and they will have the address in their system.
For thumb impression you need black sketchpen, using that you can get your baby's thumb impression. No need of buying a stamp pad.

Hi, please find my answers below -
1. Self attest means you are yourself signing the document along with the date. So in case of your kid's documents, as a parent you can self attest.
2. Yes 2 separate DD's as 1 is for BLS Canada and 1 for Indian High Commission, Toronto. The dates need not match.
3. I have explained this step in the video. Purolator has tie up with BLS and they will drop-off the OCI card once processed at your door step.

1. While uploading the documents under EMPLOYMENT/ WORK LETTER section, I have uploaded my employment letter.(later I realized that my employment letter is not necessary and tried to delete it but i couldn't able to do it. It would be helpful if you tell me how to delete it)
2.I have uploaded my PR and my wife's PR documents but My wife's PR card is expired however she has applied for PR renewal which is in process. Will it be a problem for this OCI process?

1. You can connect with BLS and ask if they can delete it on your behalf.
2. I don't think having an expired PR card be causing any issue. Just to be on safe side you can justify that PR renewal is in process. Again contact BLS and check with them.
3. Yes you need to self attest the copies of your kid's birth certificate.

When filling out online application and sending my parents Indian passport, when self Attesting, do I have to hand sign the document or can it be written electronically such as "SELF ATTESTATION This is true copy of the original Signed (name) & Date ..."

My postal code starts with the letter "L" and the website mentions that I have to send my application to Brampton location. Is this correct or can I send it to the Scarborough location which is much closer?

During the online application I was not asked to provide proof of address, such as my license. Would I still have to provide this in the application that I will send to BLS?
Hi, please find my answers to your questions -
1. Yes you have to hand sign all the copies that you will be sending along with the application form. You should also write a line - I certify this is a true copy of the original. Also put date next to it
2. Photo had to be the exact same. 51mm x 51mm. I have explained about it in this video.
3. You have to send your documents to BLS Brampton only.

Hi, Yes you can drop off at Purolator. Please note that $11 if from my home to BLS. It may be different for you (depending on where you stay). For return courier you have to pay on BLS website only.

Hi, first check on BLS website that which BLS office services your area. Take that BLS office address and put it on envelope of Purolator.

Hi, Yes you have to pay for the return courier on BLS website. Unfortunately there is no way we can work around that. The 2 drafts amounts are $345 and $7.40. You should not add courier charges to it as you are paying separately for the return courier.

Hi, ideally yes you should be sending the drop off service payment receipt along with your application. But you can give them a call and let them know that you have already paid. It should be fine.

Hi, I am not sure what is IFVRT file number. Since you stay in Brampton you can consider going to BLS in person by taking appointment. They have started giving appointments now.

Hi, 11$ were the charges from my place to BLS. It will be different for you depending on where you stay. For the return courier you have to pay through BLS website only. I hope that helps 😊

Hi, in my best knowledge your Indian passport should be valid when applying for OCI. But better connect with Indian Counsulate / Embassy / BLS as they will be in a better position to guide you.

What does this mean "Counter Delivery to BLS Centre after OCI stamping" ? I submitted application a week back but I am confused. My understanding is that it should go to New Delhi to get printed and then sent back to Toronto CGI and then to BLS, this would take about a month or so. In BLS site, I have observed that my child's application is under process only for 2 days.
Hi, "Counter Delivery to BLS Centre after OCI stamping" means the OCI is processed and is given to BLS. BLS will in turn courier it to you. No OCI does not go to New Delhi for stamping. It is done here in Toronto CGI only. I hope that helps!

Hi, Purolator fees must not be included in the draft. It must be paid online. I have mentioned the draft accounts in the video. I hope that helps 😊

Hi sir can you please help us we want to apply our baby oci . In checklist they mentioned both parents need sign to oci application at the end . Actually i am in india and my wife is in canada she is applying from there so do we need sign on print out paper of application or we can just click the photo of my signature and can upload over there. So what we can do? Bcz i already courier my all documents plz explain us if you know.

Hi, I am not sure of this. Tell your wife to call BLS in Canada and ask them. I would assume that there would be some no objection form which you have to sign so that your wife can apply for baby's OCI. But get it confirmed.
HI JUST NEED SOME INFO ON RETURN COURIER. I AM PLANING TO DROP OFF THE APPLICATION AT PUROLATOR AND ALREADY PAID FOR THE DROPOFF SERVICE FROM BLS WEBSITE... BUT IT DIDN'T GAVE ME ANY SHIPPING LABEL BUT INSTEAD SAID YOUR PAYMENT DONE GAVE ME ORDER NUMBER, TRANSACTION NUMBER, AND MENTIONED YOUR DOCUMENT WILL BE DISPATCHED WITH IN 2 BUSINESS DAYS.... Hi, you can just take the printout of the Order number & Transaction Number and include it with your application. The BLS guys will handle it accordingly.
Do they accept 2nd version of birth certificate having only parent name?

@@Rj-pd8jo with short form of birth certificate you can prove parent child relationship with your kid but it will not have compete birth information. Better apply for long form of birth certificate as it has complete details. I hope that helps ☺️
Hi, very informative video, I went to my nearby staples, but they said they can’t print out this photo for me. I don’t know if all locations of staples do it or not? Can u suggest something plz?
Hi, Better check at Staples Website. For some locations they give provision to upload the photo online and you can directly go there to collect it. You can also try Walmart as most Walmart locations will have Photo Services. I hope that helps.

Please respond - when u drop off documents at nearby purolator instead of asking BLS to pick them up..in that case how would I get OCI card back?
Hi, to get the OCI card back you must use Purolator service through BLS website and make payment. Make sure to print the payment receipt along with the application form. This way BLS knows that you have paid for the return courier and they will deliver your OCI card when processed. I hope that helps 😊

Hi, then you can show your PR card if you are on PR Visa or Work letter if you are on Work Permit.

Thank you so much, you are probably correct. Although I cross checked with the cgi/hci canada websites & they say right thumb as well for females... except the oci application form saying the opposite.. I wish they rectify this in order to avoid people from making mistakes.
