- Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) is a form of permanent residency available to people of Indian origin and their spouses which allows them to live and work in India indefinitely.
Common mistakes in OCI Application -
1. Previous Name - Here You have to put YES only if your name in Indian and Canadian Passports are different. For Married ladies if you have changed your maiden name to post marriage name in Indian Passport and the same name is used in Canadian Passport then you should mention NO here.
If you happen to change your name in your Canadian Passport but your Indian Passport has old name then you should mention YES.
2. Passport Details - Here you have to mention your Canadian Passport details. Your Indian Passport is surrendered and hence you are applying for OCI. So your Indian passport details are not needed.
3. Declaration on Page 4 of Adult Application and Page 3 of Child Application - Must be signed by the applicant. If the Applicant is a minor then thumb impression must be present. This section must not be left blank at all.
4. Application for Minor Child - This must be filled only for Child Application. Both parents must sign this section. This has to be blank for Adult Application.
5. Photo uploaded in Part B online must match with the hard copy that you provide with the Application.
6. Part B - Citizenship Date and Method of Acquisition -
- If Child is born in Canada - BIRTH
- If you acquired Citizenship by giving Citizenship test and then Oath Ceremony - NATURALIZATION
- If you are a foreigner and married an Indian Citizen - REGISTRATION

For OCI courier services, they charge an additional 30$(as of Aug 2023) for drop off of original documents in Toronto, though OCI has no original documents required(for the majority of us?). There is no way to uncheck that option when you use the combined 'Pick up and Drop off' option. But I think if you do 'Pick up' separately and then 'Drop off' separately, the separate drop off option does not add on the 'Original Drop off' fees and you may save money. I haven't tried this as I discovered this after :( but hope this helps.

Hi ,for my 2 year old kid we took thumb print and uploaded that photo , now when we got OCI print form it has the same pre printed in pdf , how to redo it on application again as that space is already prefilled with uploaded thum impression

My ID card expired in October, 2023. I neither have a driving licence or an energy bill in my name as I stay with my son. What should I submit as a proof of address? I am 81. We are going to submit our OCI applications on 12/12/23.
I have a problem my husband doesn’t want to send his Canadian passport to BLS anymore. I send an affidavit of his passport copy and the reason that BLS didn’t return his Canadian passport in a timely he is not willing to cooperate.
They send my application back again asking for his current passport. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t understand much Hindi.Thanks!

After declaration section, there is a section to fill Application for Minor (I am a parent of ..) . Here, I think we need to mention minor's name instead of parent's name and then both parents need to sign. Please check.

Awesome explanation! CCI online is very irritating and frustrating because the app was crashing continuously, so I wasted lots of time. I am yet to retrieve my partially filled-in application with the temp# given by the system. Namo is doing marvels in Bharat but here inefficient Embassy & VFS sucks! I have a question and appreciate your time & help. I don't have a marriage certificate so what is the option?

What should I do in oci application
I need to re-submit the application for my parents because the photos were rejected (we used old photos). Now just to upload a new photo, do I need to resubmit a new application? And what happens to the original fees (approx $400)?
Marriage registration date means Marriage date or Marriage registered date at the registration office? This what my certificate has Mr. X & Mrs Y has Appeared before me on the to register their marriage performed on and their marriage has been registered on . So what date should I mention in the application?

Hi there, I have a unique situation. I'm q canadian OCI and I've married an American who had 3 children from his previous (deceased wife). I've now adopted them. Can I get An OCI for them? Would you know how to go about this? I live in Dubai so we would submit our application through the BLS office here. Made a couple of mistake in mine, didn’t produce affidavit for place of birth difference between indian and Canada passport, and didn’t write my parents name as per it was in my Indian passport. Had to purolator again, $62 lost😅

Hi, if you are going in person then Two separate payments required -
1. Draft or money order in favor of "Consulate General of India - Toronto" - 345$
2. Cash or Debit card payment to BLS International Services Canada Inc. - 7.40$
You can choose to give 2 DD's per application as well.

If you state you're unemployed, they also require a 3-month bank statement along with the unemployment letter.

Did you confirm this from BLS. Do both parents need to submit employment details. My wife is main applicant and is working. So can she only submit her details, or I am also required to submit mine.
And can we submit India bank details in case unemployed.

I am looking for answer of this. And absolutely no one loops back.
I finally attached using glue and it worked. The instructions have some loop holes. There are plenty of places to get confused.

under the section "application of minor" Should I be writing my name or my child's name? As per the statement (I am a Parent /legal guardian/ legal adoptee of _________ to whome the foregoing particulars relate) sounds like my child's name. And should there be thumb impression of the child in place of signature of the applicant and then should we sign as parents under it?
Hi, you should be writing your name in this section and both parents should sign. But in the declaration section below this you should put your kid's thumb impression. I hope that helps ☺️

Brother please tell me once I have applied part Aand part B for minor new born in nz ....and it took 1.30 hour to done .when I submitted after that suddenly my application closed and not reopen again. I had tried many time to reprint open option but not opening ....what should I do now ...now need restart from new application. Or any more option because my documents not uploaded yet .and not print outs ...but I got email from oci department they generate temp file number .. please help on it
Hi, I think its better that you start all over again. You can ignore the Temporary File Number email. Once you start with new application you will get a new temporary File Number. I hope that helps!

2. Date of marriage registration what need to be put ,,solemnization or Registred on that day . (Both are present on marriage certificate)
3. If Canada passport have birth place 'abc' and Indian passport 'abc MS' with initial of state. Still require any handwritten document . Sone says affidavit required .
Hi the affidavit is required for the change of name in birth place , BLs asked me to get affidavit for my daughter s application as her surrendered Indian passport shows the birth of place as Gurgaon and the Canadian passport shows the place of birth as Gurugram.
Rather than scanning the signature on the paper, and upload it, can I write it directly on my laptop using the touch screen and then upload it?

Hi there, In the professional details, If someone is unemployed, there is no drop-down menu option to choose that as unemployed? Do we have to write a letter and explain that about unemployment?
I had the same question and then found this in the checklist. So basically, you can just write a letter mentioning your situation.
Copy of Employment / Work Letter (the document must be self-attested):
• If applicant is employed, a letter from the employer describing job profile of the applicant may be provided.
• If applicant is self-employed / doing business, some documentary proof of self-employment/business may be provided.
• If applicant is retired, some documentary proof regarding retirement and details of the last employer may be provided.
• If applicant is a student, some documentary proof, e.g. admission letter, may be provided.
• If applicant has never been employed/self-employed, a written statement may be submitted.

Oci is very difficult, not easy for common people,
We’ll have to pay for it to get it done,
I’ve been trying for hours, but couldn’t completed
From Where are you applying because it is difficult but not that much yeah for online application filling it some hours but once done it will take less time to come physically
Date of acquiring citizenship is the same as the date of oath or certificate of citizenship
Hi, it will be mentioned on your Citizenship Certificate.
I have a valid PR card, so it is necessary to send coPR with PR document because i am not able to download the coPR, and in checklist they didn't mentioned about coPR, they mentioned about PR document, work permit, study permit etc, etc..please reply

for Minor OCI, Is it compulsory required my baby's thumb impression on declaration? I have submitted the OCI and its now under process at consulate general. Will they reject the application?
FYI, On Declaration I only signed.
Hi, ideally yes you need your kid's thumb impression but now that it's under process at Consulate General it will pass through. I don't think the application will be rejected. I hope that helps 🙂

Yes, make sure to take the original surrendered passport and the surrender certificate as these are needed to submit along with your application.

1. Do the high commission in the UK accept photos taken from photo booths with sizes mentioned as 50X50, as the OCI requirement is 51X51?
2. If someone is unemployed, is it ok to explain in a cover letter or should we provide any documents as such? Will unemployed status impact the outcome of OCI acquisition?
3. What kind of address proof should we submit for minors?
4. Do we need to provide a minor with NOC to acquire OCI, as it's required in Canada.

Hi, no you just need to upload the soft copy. You should not self attest while uploading. While submitting the application you need to take photocopy, self attest and then send it.
I too was thinking it does not seem reasonable to make a copy of a document, then self-attest it, and then scan it again to a PDF for upload. Thank you for clarifying.

if you are applying for OCI , that means you have another country passport so Indian passport is invalid , what do you mean by expired passport
@@zoozoo261985 We are in Canada on PR. We may get a call for the oath ceremony in November 2023 or so. But our indian passports would expire in December, 2023. While applying for the OCI after the Oath ceremony, will our expired Indian passports would be accepted?
After your oath ceremony . You need to apply for your canadian passport. Then surrender your indian passport . Once you get your canadian passport your indian passport cNnot be used and it being expired doesnt matter . Once you surrender your indian passport you will recieve surrender certificate . With that reference number you can apply for oci

Couple of things
1) photo background should NOT be white ( it should be off white /light grey)
2) the documents copies
uploaded MUST be Self
attested
