Hi Thank you - I took great care in trying to choose suitable music for the various scenes - and this was over thirty years ago! Congrats on your own dedicated work Mary.

This is a video that I made in 1988 when I was Director of Karisoke Research Centre - after the murder of Dian Fossey (who I had first worked with in 1970 when I began my research there)
This was to be used by the then Digit Fund (which had been set up by Dian) for promotional and fund raising purposes.
It had been agreed in a new Management Plan with ORTPN (the National Parks Authorities in Rwanda in 1980’s) that Karisoke should be reserved as a Research Centre, and not part of the tourism section - and under separate management by the Digit Fund.
This agreement re the special status of Karisoke was always under pressure by the then Director of ORTPN, to allow tourists to visit - who paid their special fees to the park.

My name Is Valérie and i am currently studying in sexual behavior on animals and i would love to specify on great apes. Specially gorillas. I am a speaker in primary schools around my Town and i try to make a différence by eduquate the younger one. Its not because we are far away from the jungle that we dont have the responsability of protecting Them.
I would like to take a moment to Thank you. For What you have done. Many people have Found those image powerfull enough to speak about IT. Like me. And i would love to listen of what you think of the moutain Gorillas thèse Days. Are they still in Critical danger or if the number is slowly but surely increasing each year?
      Thanks again

@@DrAlanGoodallisGorillaGoodall i am sorry if i had use the incorrect Word. I am from Québec Canada and i speak french. But Thank you to correct me. I am still searching for a good paper or book or videos about female behavior during their ovulation. How does her personality is changing. More agressive? Does she make the first moove and ask to be served every couple hours? Does the female feel the urge to copulate to procreate or because of Pleasure they feel? The female wants a baby AT That point, is she conscious about that? Does the ovulation and period of same group female sometimes synchronised? I Have so many questions... About birth too. I Do not ask you to answer all of Them but if you can recommand me a non "rubish" book speciallyabout gorillas sexuality, it would be lovely :) thanks to have the Time to respond. Meanwhile i Will certainly Read your.book :)

Hi - no need to apologise- we all often use the 'wrong' words!!!! Especially in behaviour research, as we tend to "Anthropomorphise' all behaviour - especially of our nearest ape relatives!
Unfortunately that is not my area of expertise! This is obviously a very difficult behaviour to study - especially in the wild. You would be far better looking at gorillas in captivity to try and answer such questions.
However, you may be in luck. You should search for Dr Pascale Sicotte who was studying Mother/Infant relationships at Karisoke when I was Director in 1988 (after Dian's murder) Pascale is French Canadian like you and ex Univ of Montreal) last I knew she was in University of Calgary. Just checked via Google and she is still there.
But - my question to you is - why these PARTICULAR questions. Some of which are almost impossible to answer even from humans (e.g. pleasure?? ‘wants a baby') . Yes, there may well be synchrony - which has probably evolved in earlier eras due to seasonal food changes. Just my theory!
When you do research - as you have started to do - you will find that ALL your questions have an EVOLUTIONARY ‘explanation/cause. In other words “how has this or that particular behaviour increased the evolutionary fitness? Of course, this may result in different ’strategies’ for males and females (which Darwin showed) - hence, so-called ‘Female Choice’ I suggest that you research the work on other species, especially birds such as peacocks, first.
You should also read up about ‘infanticide’ in many species - and why males kill offspring (which are not theirs!
So, my advice- start with the bigger/wider more general questions first - and then focus on specifics. You also need to do Comparative Species research - to try and discover how a particular behaviour ’trait’ has evolved.
This is in fact how ALL our gorilla research, and the chimp research started! Louis Leaky wanted to understand how ‘man’ had evolved. As I used to say to my students - unfortunately for him he did not have Dr Who’s Tardis! So, he did the next best thing - he studied human’s closets - living - relatives to see how their behaviour had evolved and what had influenced it.
Re sexual behaviour in apes in particular - look at the HUGE diversity re Chimps, (especially pygmy chimps!) gibbons, orangs and gorillas - WHY oh WHY such differences?????
      Bonne Chance!
      Alan
PS The fact that you are asking QUESTIONS - any questions, is really great! That is truly the mark of an enquiring mind - well done. BUT, the REAL scientific challenge is asking the 'right' questions!!! What are those....???????
That is your REAL challenge Valérie.
      Meilleurs vœux

@@DrAlanGoodallisGorillaGoodall actually i am very intrigue by their understanding of the sexuality. I had study couple of male gorillas AT Granby zoo but mâle only. I am very intrigue about the female intérior felling about Pleasure sexuality and birth. AT the moment of mating does she respond to an urge of filling a sexual need or is she have the understanding of mating to Produce Offspring. This is the main question for me as a sexologist. I am far away and a mom of 5. I cant travel but i still manage to learn a bit more every Day. There is not a lot of specific informations about sexuality. Theres plenty on Bonobos ;)
Thank you for giving me her name. I Will check if i can ask her a couple of questions. I got about a 1000 actually ;) the fact that she may understand french is a good thing. Cause i am searching m'y words all the Time ;)
Thank you to had take the Time to answer me. Last question; are you still on contact today with gorillas and the communeauty or have you retired? Must be very hard to stop being around Them even if we all know this is best. Do you think that the actual Eco tourism around mountain gorillas is too Much? I feel like tourist are a bit invasive...

Captain Von Beringe's first name was Robert rather than Oscar. His grandson Andrea had also come to the Virungas in 2002 to see the gorillas his ancestor had discovered exactly 100 years before.

Thank you. I find it hilarious, but sad, that westerners (ie Wazungus) still believe that another westerner 'Discovered' the gorillas! Especially by shooting two of them! I recall the old adage that 'Nothing is said to have been discovered until it is first seen by a westerner (preferably an Englishman!) So, long ago I wrote that these mountain gorillas were first DISCOVERED by two young Rwandan cattle herders - who were tending their family cows in the meadows of the Virunga Volcanoes - at least 400 years ago!!! Unfortunately their discovery to Science was never officially recognised!
