  • Welcome plant people, today we head further into Oaxaca where we examine a variety of habitats where we encounter various species of cactus from Mammillaria to Neobuxbaumia, Fouquieria purpusii and the pony tail palm (Beaucarnea gracilis) which you'd normally see oddly enough as a office / house plant. They wouldn't fit in any office here in Oaxaca.

Man, I love watching your videos. In the last year or so I've given up a lot of crappy hobbies/habbits I've had and have gotten really interested in succulents and cactus and I feel like this hobby has done wonders to bring me back into the present moment on a much more regular basis than I used to be, and when I hear you talk about the plants you see, I can tell that we feel the same excitement and wonder and awe about them. Thanks for making these videos and showing the plants you do, I appreciate it

My stepdad took me to his hometown in Guanajuato when I was 15 years old. Stayed in MX for about 2 months and it was the best two months of my life. I do remember the massive cacti and the variety of habitats. Seeing desert turn to jungle then pine forest and then more desert all in a 4 hour bus ride. Love Mexico

I spent proof my life in the Sonoran Desert…still my favorite place. Decades ago, I had a cactus collection and was very careful not to collect anything endangered and tried not to take wild collected because I could already see the impact over collection was having on the environment. It’s much easier now to find things which were greenhouse grown. Hubby grew up on the East Ciast, where I knew Lu e and is crazy for succulents.

Perfect cacti. After all, when they grow in their own environment, they are the most beautiful, even if their life is threatened by a volcano. I see that the subsoil is of volcanic origin.

@@CactusQuest it was a blast back then and it still is, however there were a lot more Plant's to discover then.
I think the Dioon Habit that I visited is probably a Corn field by now, I got the directions from my friend Loren Whitelock who was the keeper of secret Habit knowledge back then.

In case you still read this... question. at 21 minutes, there are 4 nice thick bamboo shutes who appear to be in tiny pots. What's up with that haha? Were they actually growing in there? They look waaaaay too thick to be growing in any convined pot, but perhaps that's just because of my lack of experience :) I bought some Phyllostachys earlier this year, the man had buckets with some growing for 5 and even 8 years in there. Meanwhile, the ones in the ground with the same age were multiple times thicker

Hollllyy crap. Man I wish I could go see this place in person. It's wild thinking such beauty exists. More wild to think that it is getting destroyed and species like the purpusii are so unvalued that they just bulldoze them. What an absolutely amazing plant! It's a pity that the marble mining is the most 'valuable' job in the area instead of something like ecotourism or something that protected the plants and supported them like Aus has done with the Wollemi pines.

I have a Ferocactus latispinus! He lives under strong grow lights indoors, so is very slow growing, but i try to give it and my other cactus (Echinopsis) winter rests. Also, did I see some wild growing aloe in some of the shots near the mammilaria corwinskia? Aloe are probably my other fave desert succulent :)
