That guitar tone of Dan Hawkins, that riff from the beginning until the end. His rhythm playing and guitar tone are the secret weapon of The Darkness that goes under the radar, rarely got mentioned
'Givin Up' should be a standard in the history of British music! It should be sung in churches, primary school assemblies, football stadiums and rehab centres..
I had just broken out of Heroin addiction and was driving to Cornwall for a break from the world with my lil sister and she puts this on the car stereo. I had never heard any Darkness before as I was too busy being a Sky-hi-atrist. Just as the song started she looked at me and said "Sorry, I just couldn't resist it" - we both pissed ourselves laughing as soon as I heard the song and the context had sunk in - I kept her Darkness CD 😋
Watch their 2012 Isle of Weight full concert on You Tube. They played Givin Up - Stuck in a Rut in that order, it's bloody awesome. Esp since they were played towards the end of concert.
These guys are all fantastic musicians and hilariously funny, but I find myself laughing at Frankie the bassist the most - the epitome of bass player cool. And I’m a guitarist in a band too!!
I've done songs for myself and songs for other people, but these guys cannot be imitated. I cannot even imagine writing a song for them. They are unique and full on special talents. I hope this song and others get a beta treatment, where the lyrics and other shit get proper digital treatment that shows the purity of what must be the experience live. I might never see these guys...
Thank you for uploading, I was not far from you that night, so watching this was great (even spotted myself singing along to the chorus !!) First time seeing them live and they were fantastic, loved it 😁
I try not to film too much and just enjoy the show and always film head-height so I don't block anyone's views. Thanks for your comment! What was your favourite song of the night?
What a rock band 👏 iv been a fan for some time now , they are the remains of the rock cliches that we (70's generation) grow up on , f@#₪ they are good
I only have great music in my car ie Metallica faith no more nine inch nails foo fighters so hopefully I have class ! I’m dam sure your in my car too ! Great song !
I was 21 when this came out and I didn't really pay much attention to the lyrics. I heard it today for this first time in decades and couldn't believe my eyes when the lyrics went past on Spotify. It's about heroin?! I thought it was gonna pretend to be about heroin, then really be about love or something by the end, but no - it's just about heroin. Though Justin does whisper the word 'skag'.
Ha! It's not subtle, though! "I'd inject into my eyes If there was nowhere else to stick my skag" "All I want is brown (heroin slang) And I'm going into town Shooting up as soon as I'm back My friends have got some good sh*t All I want is some of it Gimme, gimme, gimme that smack Well I've ruined nearly all of my veins Sticking that f*cking sh*t into my arms" Wait until you find out that "Growin' on Me" is about genital warts...

Guitar tone is MEAT. Literally admiring his sound as I was reading the comments. 👌
Permission to Land won’t be but should be consider in the top 40 greatest rock records of all time
At least in Rock history
I've been saying top 20 for the last 10 years so thanks for backing me up on this 🤘
@@scottsnyder7740 it's a good album but top20 is a bit much
When we saw them live in SLC back in 2018 they played nearly the entire album; such a fantastic show!
YES.
'Givin Up' should be a standard in the history of British music! It should be sung in churches, primary school assemblies, football stadiums and rehab centres..
Not so sure about churches but a catchy song like this would fit a sporting event really well.
@@muzgash And the prize for stating the bleeding obvious goes to...muzgash!!! 🤭
Don’t forget weddings and baptisms
uneffingreal for their age. the quality, so tight! WOW! Thank you.
Quite possibly the best solo I’ve heard in 20 years. The album track is face melting. Dan and Justin Hawkins are beasts in the best way
I think you need to get out more.
Totally agreed. One of the catchiest solos ever written. Dan prefaces the solo so perfectly and Justin just comes in and nails it.
Justin Hawkins is now and forever my favorite rock star
Such an underrated band. One of the best live acts I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying.
Agree, they are extraordinarily enjoyable live, always a great sound also, you see the effort to never disappoint an audience.
me too, absolutely fantastic live band.
Same same 💜💙
AMEN BRO !
multi-platinum album selling band The Darkness are underrated? ok then
2:12 Dan must have missed the footswitch or something here. I like that they're so professional they just have a laugh about it

Sky-hi-atrist - I've never heard anyone use that. That's quite good.
Your sis is a gem. And we'll done for kicking the habit. Live long and prosper.
Such a killer riff! The guitar tones are sick too!
The groove of RUFUS it's fantastic.......
His father's unique hi hat touch is apparent. What great playing and sound!
Man, these guys can play !
Hard to hear the end of this track without imagining the snare strike bringing in the next track on the album: Stuck in a Rut.
Great upload, thanks.
I thought the exact same thing meself
Ha, I do it every time this song finishes.
Watch their 2012 Isle of Weight full concert on You Tube. They played Givin Up - Stuck in a Rut in that order, it's bloody awesome. Esp since they were played towards the end of concert.
I was there for this but on the second tier, best band I’ve ever seen live
Absolutely mint. This cheered me right up
Haha Dan stamps on the wrong pedal, Justin quick as a flash "Dan Hawkins on guitar".
Nice to see the bass guitarist really exploring that space with the cowbell!
Gotta love Dan repping Thin Lizzy always
These men are GLORIOUS !!! Everything I want in a rock band ... 💋
Dan having a lil mishap and then Justin giving him an immediate shoutout - loved it
These guys are all fantastic musicians and hilariously funny, but I find myself laughing at Frankie the bassist the most - the epitome of bass player cool.
And I’m a guitarist in a band too!!
My second favorite song on the album, right after Love on the Rocks With No Ice.
One of my favourite Darkness songs, I really enjoyed singing along to the chorus when I saw them live in 2017
I can only imagine how cool it is to have the audience sing part of a song that you wrote.
Ask Dan he penned that bad boy
Almost 20 years after the release of the song to
can't help but smile and laugh...what a band!!
such a good fking band!
Always top notch live with The Darkness. Thx for sharing the vid man! Merry Xmas! Happy Festivus.
Probably my favorite song as well. Brilliant!

...Justin looking very Bon Scott, but those pants need to be WAY tighter!!! lol
It's like 1973 all over again.
The 'yeah, yeahs' are dangerously close to Wake Me Up Before You Go Go's 'yeah, yeahs'. Copyright anyone?

@@QualityChimp I know, i don’t know how i missed it. I’ve heard that album so many times and literally today I saw the lyrics and couldn’t believe it.
No one gonna shout out to Noddy Holder in the crowd!!! (1:43)
1:01 - Probably the coolest person to ever play the cowbell 😂 Smooth mf haha
The high notes and hair extensions are just 🤣
Problem?
Is that hair extensions??
It was ok, but could we do it again, this time with more cowbell!
1:02 He DID explore the space though
2' 09" Wrong pedal - never done that (cough) ...
It’s just as ass whooping 🤘
More cowbell!
Such a catchy song aside from the lyrics 😂. It really is good though (the song).
bass player giving me prince vibes
I preferred AC/DC the first and second time around.
Needs more cowbell....
Mock Rock
Sings too high too often for my taste in kick ass rock
Needs more cowbell
