Do you a favorite setting for the TAP/CTL switch? If so, let's discuss here!
Hey Mr Orion, I've had two HOF2 4X2...both lemons, two times in a row.
Do you think it's worth the extra cash to go to this Roland? given it's got a spare tape echo and a hold function.
I liked the HOF2 4X@ for the "mash" features and 8 saves...can I get comparable options once I set up some saves inside the Boss RV500?
In Australia the HOF 2 4X2 is $335 whereas the Boss RV500 is around $460.
I just don't think I can risk another HOF as I think the entire run was put out with the wrong software.
I really value your opinion.
I've a Strymon Riverside but feel I don't want to go to Strymon Blue Sky except for a Volante and a Deco.
I'd value your advice, taste and experience.
Just got this pedal and read through the 28 page manual. It's by far the most complicated pedal I have but I love it!
man i just love how you get right into it.. no tv-style intros or other things to waste time--just right to the content. much appreciated... and of course the content is *always* first rate. thank you.
Thanks so much for the great feedback!!!
Absolutely -- always a pleasure!
I sooooo agree. There is enough time wasting on the internet already. Great content Sir. Thank you.
Just orders my RV 500 can’t wait to play around with all those options. Great video very helpful!
reverb is like bacon and eggs......it NEVER gets old! : )
Yes, indeed!
Hate to brake it to you, but bacon and eggs get old :)
I eat bacon and eggs for breakfast every day. Been doing that for years. Do you mean I am gonna get sick of it one day?? 😜
Yeah, but leave them on the side for a week or two... they get old! :P
Club Soda If you want bacon and eggs, you can get them everywhere that isn't mostly Muslim or Jewish
Thank you! This is very helpful. You are a great teacher. I'm foregoing eating at lunch to spend the time trying these settings out! Lol.
I'm going to try connecting an expression pedal to the RV 500 and see if I can assign foot control through that, also.
i've been using the tap/ctl a lot for secondary flavors of the same patch-ie. adjusting plate delay time from 1.5 to 5.5 seconds or turning "shimmer" on and off. Need to play with hold more. I've been burned by terrible sounding warp and twist from my dd-20 that i'll need some more time to warm up to those options :D
wonderful demo, thanks for inspiring!
Great use of the tap/ctl switch!!
This is great--nice alternative for using loopers/delays for drones. Thanks for sharing the tip--have a feeling I'll be using this one a lot.
Glad it was useful!
Great video, sounds like a must have for any ambient style of music!
Definitely a good one to consider!
Super helpful video thank you.
What a voice 😲
convinced me to add the Boss RV500 to my collection.
Momentary capture in EQD Avalanche Run is nice. I just have to watch the switching, as Glitching in and out points are a tad unpredictable. Another cool thing about the pedal is that rolling the time down to zero with the mix up produces some pretty beautiful synth like pitches. I traded up to the stereo version, lost the functionality, got another with a third set of things it does. You get a personalized synth with each and every one being unique it seems! EQD sent me a letter saying that was the case due to “tolerances” differences. I set it up before Timeline and BigSky, and feed into a Ditto x 2 and hope I get lucky matching pitches with stuff I do on guitar. A lot of the same drone notes come out of the Avalanche Run when doing that, each time turning the time up while killing the out mix, then twisting the time back to zero while the sound comes back up in the mix brings a different result! It’s crazy, and doesn’t always work but what a cool thing.
Thanks for these great magic formula Mr Sound wizard! ;) (sorry bank account...)
Just love this guy
GREAT DEMO. I see you are using some sort of ping-pong delay, which I presume you are getting from the DD-500. I'd rather take just the RV-500 (and not both pedals) on the road. Is there any way to get a ping-pong delay from the RV-500, either explicitly or by setting different delay times in the two channels (in the mode where you set the left & right channels independently)? THANKS!
have you tried the DUAL option with RV-500?
you could put the same reverb on both stereo channel, and then use different delays.
or if you have a stereo setup you could configure TWO reverb A/B one for each input channel.
then you could the two delays with different times
Thank you for this video! I’ve learned so much
TOP - perfect DEMO-WORK :-) Thank You !!!
Good ol' phil video. I love this kind of videos where very cool techniques are shown. I wonder if you can do this with any other endgame reverb pedals
I did a recent video of the "infinite" hold option on the Strymon BigSky. It's a cool feature for sure: ruclips.net/video/Bjg6BxCgmpo/видео.html
I just bought the Mooer Ocean Machine after watching your demo which I am very happy with, but i'm still on the fence about the BOSS RV 500 because of the 'hold' feature and of course I would need the BOSS DD 500....just because, but the ~ $700 price tag combined is holding me back.....maybe I just need to use the Mooer for a while first........
I say use the Mooer for a while. Get to know it and really explore the depths of what it can do.
I am in a similar spot today, except I am considering replacing my Big Sky with one or both pedals. Would love to know what you wound up doing, what you would consider/recommend today, and why.
Thanks very detailed info. I already just purchased a used Eventide Blackhole, before realising that RV500 is on sale in my area $200 😆 Is it worth getting or already overkill to mix with Blackhole? Thanks
That stereo tho 😍
Great video - thank you 😊 I’m tempted to get one and using the hold feature on the Moog Grandmother to drone while I play some lead.
Apart from the warp and twist feature, The Boss GT1 does this and more.
Cuz the rv500 is a reverb, not a multi effects pedal. That's like saying it doesn't do what your lawnmower does-- while it's true, it also isn't supposed to
One thing I would like to be able to do with the hold function is a real 'freeze', like the electro harmonix pedal... I wander why at boss they didn't implement it, it's a pity, they're were almost there...
very very nice video, thank you! i subbed!
Do you plan to review the new Boss 200 series pedals? If you do, can you look into how two 200 series pedals can be midi connected? Can they midi connect with a trs cable, or will they each require trs-midi cable coming out of each pedal, with a regular midi cable in between? Thanks. Love your videos.
I was not aware of this series. Will see if I can get some demo units from BOSS. I did look at the user manual for the DD-200. I would guess that if you are connecting one 200 series to another, you would just use a TRS cable. I would be a little concerned about stringing more than 2 together, as there is no MIDI Thru, just in and out.
@@chordsoforion thanks for the reply. I hope you can get them in for a review.
Curious if you have done a demo on the Blackhole reverb?
great demo. Do you prefer this one over the BigSky for ambient, post-rock experimental stuff? and soundquality wise?
Both reverbs are wonderful for ambient styles of guitar (or any other instrument for that matter). It really comes down to which tone do you prefer - BOSS or Strymon?
Anyone hear if Boss is planning to release a 200 line reverb? The 500s are just a bit (lot) overkill for what I need.
When I use the momentary hold feature it seems to get really loud as I hold it. Maybe feedback is too high?
Hello, is it easier on this unit too create a drone sound or is the Mooer Ocean Machine easier? thanks
Are you sitting down? I'm kinda wondering how you're holding down the drone button *and* do your volume swells.
I am sitting on a stool. :-)
Advanced ambient players can actually levitate on the sound waves.
hey great demo how would you use this with two amps would you go into front of amps or use effect loops
I run in stereo with my amp modeler (Avid Eleven Rack), so if I were using amps, I would try to use 2 to retain the stereo image. If you are using your amp for a distorted tone, I would recommend running the reverb in the effects loop so it does not distort.
What are some midi controllers that *do* work with rv500? I need to be able to access 6-8 reverbs, 3-4 delays, & a mix of each.
I'm about to buy this or the Avalanche Run V2 to combine it with my Digitakt. I want to give my samples an ambient, drone-ish and soundscaping tone. Which one would you reccomend me and why?
To me the choice depends on what you are looking for, as the pedals are totally different. If you are looking for a pedal that is primarily a reverb, get the RV-500. If you are looking for a pedal that is primarily a delay pedal, get the ARV2.
Really cool feature of the rv! Unfortunately, the hold switch boosts the sound. Has someone else noticed it?
I have noticed that it does seem to boost when using certain reverb types such as the interlinear. Not so much with the hall (as you heard on this video).
It boosts the level most in the twist setting. Makes that feature completely unusable for me.
Do you play straight into the pedals then to daw, or are these in the loop of something else like an amp or amp sim?
I normally use an amp sim in the signal path and then connect the end of the chain directly into the computer audio interface.
@@chordsoforion thanks for replying. I just got an RV 500 and was trying to figure out how to get an amp sim through it and then back to the computer.
Hey! How are you?
I hope you're doing well.
I have a question, have you ever tried to get swells from computer? (VST FX only, not pedals)
When i plug my guitar into the computer, I generally use a volume pedal, or just do volume swells with the volume control knob on the guitar.
Hey Bill....how does this stack up against the Mooer Ocean machine?
If you are looking for a dedicated reverb pedal, the the RV 500 has it all over the Ocean Machine.
damn it....I just bought a Mooer after watching your Mooer review lol....however I traded my DIG in part exchange for the Moeer so I now have a reverb AND my two delay lines that I lost with my DIG so not all bad, now I just gotta convince the wife I need a Boss RV 500 ;-)
I dont know if someone is still here but, anyone knows how control the "volume" of the CTL button, when i hit it, its too much feedback.
Can u set the rv500 to use, say 4 or 5 banks? I don't see these advertised stating something like..."200 factory presets, 100 user presets". What gives?!?!
There are 99 banks of 3 patches per bank. There are no user vs factory patches. Also, you can do a partial or whole reset to get the original patches back.
@@chordsoforion Thanks brother. You can tell I'm old school, huh?! Blessings & continued success.
@@chordsoforion Roland tends to have read-only factory banks and then separate, writable banks for the user in their synthesizers, that might be part of the cause of the confusion.
I need this
does anybody know if strymon big sky has this hold button option too?
Yes - the BigSky has both a freeze and an infinite mode activated by a button.
@@chordsoforion Thanks!
Hi. Thank you for your video. I’m stuck on a decision between buying the 3 boss pedal versions of the Strymon pedals like the big sky, mobius and timeline, or maybe just buy the Strymons. Boss Vs Strymon. Could you give me a good opinion on which trio you think has the advantage.?
Looking to purchase soon. Thank you.
The Boss trio is cheaper than the Strymon trio, and they all have the ability to place multiple patches at once (RV-500 can do a reverb and a delay together). The Strymon trio - well, if you are looking for that signature Strymon sound, with more options for smearing and diffusing delays and reverbs, then that's the trio for you.
Chords Of Orion Thank you
What do you think about the band Creed? Somehow this demo reminded me of "My Sacrifice"
My older kids used to listen to Creed, but I am not very familiar with them. Will have to check out that particular tune.
I must admit, Creed are probably my 2nd least favourite band, and Nickleback are my least favourite!
Why doesn't this amp have no church reverb effect 😐
design it and make it a preset for yourself
He is like a version of sir Davos and a little of paul rudd
Yep, this was the pedal my dad threw at my head before telling me to leave the house.
This versus the Ventris?
I would have to give the nod to the RV-500.
interesting. i'm somewhat surprised, but i'll check out the rv 500. thanks!
I'm a little surprised by this reply too. The RV500 specs show 32bit/96K A/D converters vs. the Ventris (24bit/52) and Strymon (24/96). But the sounds of the RV500 that I've heard don't sound as natural to me as the others. Are you actually hearing a qualitative difference over the other two competitors, Bill? Or is it a features difference?
Just to be clear, my comment was in response to comparing with the Ventris only, not the BigSky or Blue Sky. Second, the Ventris is a great sounding reverb, and I really love its ability to run 2 reverbs at the same time. The reality is that you won't go wrong with either pedal. They are both stupidly powerful and have great features and sounds.
That being said, I very much like the tone of the reverbs on the RV-500, and the depth of options for tonal shaping. Just last night, I started playing around with it, and in just a few minutes created an incredible sounding patch for my EBow. I also like that you can do the deep editing directly from the pedal without having to plug it into a computer or connect to your device.
