    Essentially a Jon Oliva solo album. Zak Stevens on vocals and Alex Skolnick with the lead guitar. Everything else was played by Jon.

    • @BlackieNuff
      @BlackieNuff 3 года назад +4

      And it almost didn't happen - I heard Jon was gonna call it quits after Criss died, but someone or something convinced him it would honor his brother more to keep the band alive and going, and (ultimately) finish all the unfinished music ideas Criss had (many of which appeared on Jon's solo project Jon Oliva's Pain). I'm glad Jon went this direction, cos it allowed for more Savatage music and the birth of TSO (and JOP, of course).

      First heard it live, Jon said it was the first riff Criss ever created.
      This live version is great, even if it's just to see Jon on guitar. I always knew he could play, but its still odd to see.

    This is officially my favorite reaction channel. You two keep reacting to the lesser known bands (in the US anyway). Savatage has been a favorite of mine for almost 20 years now. Handful of Rain was a very personal album for Jon Oliva. It came out after his brother was killed in a car accident. Great song, great album, great band. Great reaction.

    Wow. I've been listening to metal since the mid 80's and there are some bands such as this one that I just never really gave a listen to. Probably because there's just so much really bad metal out there that if it looks like a gimmick I pass.
    I'm definitely diggin more into savatage. And I know it's long over due.
    Thanks for introducing this old headbanger to it, T.

      Savatage being a prog-metal band without sounding too "proggy," they released several concept albums--almost metal operas. I strongly suggest "Dead Winter Dead," about the Bosnian war in the '90s. The riffs are killer, the story is clear, and the cohesiveness of the overall composition is awe-inspiring. Having been very close (within hours) of hitting the dirt for ground combat there, I listened to this set until I literally destroyed the cassette. Hope someone else gets as much out of it so did--and still do. (Gotta go listen to it again, now!)

    This was as much a reaction for me as it was for you, I've never heard it before. I was a Savatage fan from the beginning days but I strayed after Street Opera. This was their first album since the death of Chris. Yea, you can hear what's missing without Chris on guitar. That's not a hit on anyone, but it's just not the same when you've been a fan of theirs from the beginning. You have plenty to discover on this band Sir TNT!
    I hate to do this, but please forgive my gratuitous suggestion - For a real heavy hitter song that will absolutely get you rocking- ck out "Unusual" from Power of the Night. Man, This is what I mean about classic Savatage - You won't regret it.

    This cd was actually just supposed to be a tribute song. The cd came out in 1994. In late 1992, guitarist Criss Oliva died in a car crash caused by a drunk driver. The previous lead vocalist, Jon Oliva is his brother. Jon had left for another project and Zak Stevens had taken over on the previous cd (Edge of Thorns) as lead singer. After some time grieving Jon wanted to do a tribute song for Criss with no intention of continuing the band. The bass player, Johnny Lee Middleton and drummer, Steve Wacholz joined Jon and Zak, but they still needed a guitarist. They got one of the best in Alex Skolnick, lead guitarist from Testament. They worked on the tribute song and it went so well, they made an entire cd, and the band ended up reforming. Now let me start another comment about the tribute song I mentioned and another key aspect of Savatage that started with their song Devastation from Hall of the Mountain King.

    Listening to this record brings me to tears every time. Savatage Co-founder Chris Oliva was tragically killed during the recording of this record. Lead guitarist Alex Skolnick, who had just left Testament, was brought in to finish the record and stayed in the band for the subsequent tour in support of the record. I'm pretty sure Skolnick did all the lead guitar work on this record. The amazing thing about the lead work on this record is that Skolick didn't approach the songs the was he would normally. He mimic'd Oliva for the most part. There are a few signature Skolnick licks here and there but for the most part he sounds like Oliva. Truly amazing work.

    One on my favorites by them is a song called Follow Me. Remember they had Jon Olivia on vocals early on and starting with Edge of Thorns Zachery Stevens was added as lead vocalist while Jon Olivia was still in the band. Jon Olivia didn’t want to sing as much even tho he still sings from time to time with Zachery Stevens still in the band. Both vocalist are great. Put it this way 1980’ s Savatage - Jon Olivia. 1990’s Savatage Zachery Stevens.

    Dude, there's some REALLY great material within this particular vein of Metal...I don't know why these dudes, and a few others, have been lumped in with the "Hair Band" stuff, but it is what it is. There's a LOT of great music if you decide to venture a little deeper down this path. Bulletboys, Tora Tora, Badlands (ex-Ozzy axe man Jake E Lee), Kingdom Come, Leatherwolf, White Wolf, Kix, Dangerous Toys, Hurricane, etc, etc...

    Great choice. Savatage is so underrated. Streets is a masterpiece, BTW. You must listen to that all the way through.

      "Tonight he Grins Again" is so frighteningly accurate, the song stands out as the best in the album for me.

    This is a great song, but on an unrelated note: You should definitely do Led Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand. I think you would love it.
