A Hindu from Fiji said they were indentured servants there too and prospered after awhile. He said the native Fijians resented them because they lived their whole lives in huts but Indians had houses.

Fascinating video! In Kenya we have Indians who were originally brought by the British to build the railroad. I grew up in a neighborhood of Nairobi that had a lot of Indian Kenyans (mostly Punjabis and Goans but there were others like Patels and Gujaratis). As kids we played together on the street. But our parents never socialized together. When I visited Kenya, 10 years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to see some Indians of my age drinking beer in African stores. But also, many of them had migrated to Western countries.

As a black man, biracial half east indian, half black and having strong roots there i have to say there is some truth in his words. East indians because of their culturing...a focus on family, strong work ethic & having endured much abuse by those who came to trinidad before them, they persevered and have prospered. The africans chinese portugese & even syrians were here before them (according to U.W.I prof Bridgette Berrington), forgive me if i have mis-spelt her name. They were somewhat charged wt being responsible for the first stock exchange & not having much vices they stored their gold & monies in the banks regularly....everything was put behind their children & of extreme importance (and still is) to build & pass on generational wealth. Whilst the Africans dominated the gov't service, they focused on self development, owning businesses, which would ultimately grow, creating upward social mobility... Culturally status is very important, and thus certain fields were the targets for their children...

This phenomenon is very common in nearly most former British colony due to British's 'Divide & Rule' policy. To prevent native population to be prosper and powerful enough to harm their colonial administration, British would bring 'foreign' staff/administrator from other colony like India etc and Chinese as labourer/miner to help them manage the country and grew the economy. The natives would be continue to work in agricultural/menial job in rural areas while newcomers will live in the cities. After 2-3 generations and later Independence from British rule (WW2), these newly-created free nations had to figure out themselves how to 'correct' the socio-political-economic imbalance that caused by colonial policies that detrimental to the cohesiveness and stability of a multi-ethnic,multi-cultural societies

It is rather remarkable that they are not great fodder for those who make political moolah from oppression politics. Well done on them.
As Sowell says, Indians are politically apathetic, internally divided and generally not given to state largesse. Outside India. Sad that in India, they are so beholden to state largesse that they have perpetuated their poverty.

Just to contradict some Trinis here:
    1) Racism is not of the past. Its covert now. People, BOTH SIDES, are still prejudiced but a bit more tolerant. This was a case for a while now though. I believe these ideas of us being highky divided are way more exaggerated than the actual case.
    2) Intermixing has always been a thing. Both the black and Indian community have a tendency to hate it for ethnocultural reasons.
Has intermixing risen though?? There is no data for that. Census data is outdated but it is possible.
Also, controversially I'd say that there is a lot of FETISHISM in that intermixing. Black men tend to fetishize Indian women, which is why most relationships are that specific combination.
I was doing actual research on this on local and larger forums, and I was actually surprised because I thought light skinned black women and Hispanics/Spanish women would have been highly prevalent. They were not, granted they still were respresented compared to dark skinned black women. Check a Trinidadian subreddit, granted you will see revenge p0rn on there as well, again involving Indian females, often not Indian on Indian if its a nasty video.
Slurs (c00lie) and conquerence rhetoric is also attached to these posts. I firmly believe that there are men using our women to fight a proxy war as well based on rhetoric like "Another beti falls for the black sword," with beti being used mainly by black men to refer to Indian females. You see this in a lot of their music which again is targeted at Indian women. Let it be noted that black guys being the main ones who love to say "Douglarize the nation" compared to everyone else including black females is quite telling and also weird af. Please analyse that rhetoric.
*Note: nothing against organic relationships but they're rare from what I've seen.
    3) Racism towards Hindus and Muslims are a huge thing. Hindu temples get vandalized regularly and have been vandalized ever since we've been here and if you're a bearded guy in the wrong area, rastafarians particularly have a thing for slowing down and murderously looking at you. They perceive bearded people, particular Indian people with beards, as Muslims and they don't like them because in their mind, all Muslims are gang members.
If you doubt that there is prejudice against Hindus and Muslims, just remember, there are numerous organizations founded by Indian people to fight for Indian Hindu and Muslim rights together and the preservation of Indian culture. TOGETHER.
A lot of the people in this comment section who things things have gotten better, are seeing it from their perspective. They fail to realize the negative effects of the past and present on the future of certain communities in the country.
    4) There is also a victim mentality amongst black people (Trinis as a whole but mainly black people). One time I heard a person claimed how America was a less prejudiced country because there were more black billionaires, failing to realize that there were local black billionaires in Trinidad, at least in the past. There is also this tendency to refer to themselves as a "minority" when percentage wise, they were up there with Indians in the last couple decades and they were also the sizeable majority in the past and is believed to be the majority now. Again, a census needs to be done to confirm that.
Also, there is a high tendency to claim that all Indian people are rich and black people are poor when in certain areas of the country, you'd quicker see a black person driving a luxury vehicle than an Indian. You'd also see Indians who are dirt poor as well. The thing is though, a lot of poor Indians dont live where poor black people live. Poor bkack people live near the city so people tend to see them more. Poor Indian people live in the Southern parts of the country. These are areas that most of the country has never gone by or will ever go by. But ofc, they'd be the first to talk on "Trinidad" Twitter about who is privileged and who is not. This part of the country is also quite underdeveloped btw. Even the members of the ruling party have alluded that you'd have to vote for them to get anything done. But thats a lie because they don't even care about the areas that they always win.
Then we factor in that politically, the party that was lead by bkack people and represented mainly black people have lead the country for majority of the country's existence. How some have the audacity to claim how Indian people are the main reason why so many are still poor is beyond me! They're trying to applying American politics and History to Trinidad when it doesn't apply.

Indian women almost all the time prefer, date and marry their own Indian men in the Caribbeans or Trinidad. Indian men dating bla ck women on the other hand is quite common in the Caribbeans or Trinidad. Bla ck men in Trinidad don't fetishize Indian women, even if they do Indian women don't date bla ck men. There is hardly any intermixing between bla cks and Indians in Trinidad, Indians considering bla cks as not equal is one of the reasons behind it. You are a bla ck man who wants others to believe that Indian women in the Caribbeans or Trinidad date/marry bla ck men, you want to portray how "good" bla ck men are. Are west Indians even Hindu? Only Hindus are very thrifty and cohesive out of India like jews, as one of the oldest literate cultures, dont know about African cultures except Egypt. Hinduism is older than all Abrahamic religions combined.
We had a group of about 70 in our temple at Delhi, who were recent Isckonite converts from Trinidad visiting India, they all claimed to had been forcibly christianized by the blacks, but eager to accept their roots, we Hindus were so shocked that they looked so African, like the features and all, not anything bad or good about that, but nothing about them was anything similar to us Hindus at all, genetically or even culturally.
In this situation, how does that group claim to have Indian roots was beyond us😅.
I was surprised that there were Hindus in some western country, as we dont accept conversion at all until recently. I can only say, we Hindus didnt have any historical experience mostly with blacks, in contrast to Christians or Muslims, so we dont know about your culture. But, all groups ought to live in peace. We have Muslims, Christians here as well, Hindu kings sheltered them and we all live peacefully. They even feed on Hindu money via our Hindu temples, via some regressive british laws which are gonna be changed in the coming years.

But the the Indians started to go back to their old ways and that advantage Indian had over China was lost also.

They just happened to take over an entire civilization that had already perfected the means of stratifying labor and extracting wealth through caste. No need for slavery - all they had to do was tax it. They eventually sucked $43 trillion out of India.

India’s share of world income shrank from 22.6% in 1700-almost equal to Europe’s share of 23.3%-to 2.8% in 1945
The ,"Brightest jewel in the British Crown" was the poorest country in the world in terms of per capita income at the beginning of the 20th century.
Since Independence, the average Indian's income has increased to about 37 times than that at Independence !
Infant mortality rate reduces 97% from Independence !
The percent of people living below poverty line ( less than 2 $/ day now) ( PPP) has decreased from 84% (1945) to just 5.4% today !
India has lifted 715 million people out of poverty in last 60 years !

@@thebestevertherewas Firstly it is impossible to measure the total GDP of a country as percentage of the World economy before 1815, as there is a lot of economic data missing. For example, what was the GDP of Africa in 1700 AD, impossible to know because of lack of written records, so without African GDP, it is impossible to measure global GDP and only then can you measure percentage. However we have some good data on GDP/ capita and already in 1600 AD, Britain had twice the GDP per capita of India, before the East India Company even landed in India. Already by then Indian wages on the silver standard was only 20 percent that of England in those days as per the calculations of Broadberry and Gupta.
India was poorest in per capita income in beginning of 20th century??? India was already full of extreme poverty before the British conquered India as attested by numerous travellers. Also as far as India's GDP per capita had grown after 1947, the entire World saw massive rise in GDP per capita after WW2. Actually Indian subcontinent has become poorer relative to the UK, after 1947. Before 1947, during British Empire, the average British wage was nearly 6 times average Indian wage. Now the average British wage is 20 times average Indian wage. This after Britain was totally bankrupt after WW2, after fighting the powerful German and Japanese war machines!!! Britain was paying back WW2 loans to the USA till the 1990s, yet the British economy boomed after giving India Independence.

Indians don't inavde and colonise and don't force thier religion and culture on the natives as the British did. The British inavded and colonised many nations, wiped out the natives so they became a minority and forcefully converted the remaining to Christianity and took thier land and resources and treated them like slaves. Indians came as labourers and worked hard and developed these nations. They didn't care if anyone loved them or hated them and didn't follow thier religion and culture etc. All that mattered to them was that they work hard and become successful and prosperous and thier children had good education etc.
