People blaming the U.K. for not accepting more South Asian refugees from Uganda and not Idi Amin’s government for actually expelling them has very much the same energy as people condemning the international community for not stopping the Rwandan Genocide rather than condemn the people who actually carried it out.
With all do respect, what exactly does the U.K. produce? How do you get your GDP if you aren’t getting it outside. Furthermore, the U.K. Wouldn’t be where it is today without the help and intellects that the Indian, Africans, other Asians and Middle Eastern people brought to help you. About 25 years ago I worked with a man in Britain who today would support the BLM movement and who was Afro-Caribbean. He was also of the extreme left. He would never criticise anything bad that Africans did. I asked him about Idi Amin and the fact that Amin killed more than 100,000 Ugandans during his reign. The man's reply was that Amin could not be criticised because he was African. I put it to him that Amin had killed more Africans than the apartheid regime in South Africa, a regime which he (rightly) criticised. He didn't reply that time. In my mind left wing racists are every bit as bad as right wing ones.
The Apartheid regime killed 700 black people during the uprising.. while the blacks killing blacks by innovative means like 'necklacing' .during that time .. .killed 17,000. Makes you think..doesn't it...
@lowKut Indian folk are the best. There's good & bad & complex personalities in every group. But if there is a "Master Race", it is the Indians. Those folks have survived and prevailed through so much hardship. The British Empire is gone but the Indian people live and march on.

The Indians were a very important asset to the Ugandan economy, I was there for work in the 60s and met many. They were hard working, built everything from scratch, and employed many Africans. It was east africas greatest loss because these people and their children are one of the reasons why the west is booming. Their children excel in academics, they have helped the medical, engineering, and computer sciences fields in America.
"these people and their children are one of the reasons why the west is booming." The West is going down the drain. Indians, a tiny minority in the West, cannot be given credit for anything good in the West. And the visible backwardness of their own country, is proof enough.😂
America and the western establishment will treat Indians in the same manner once the western economy corrects. I am sorry to say history will repeat itself. However this time, Bharat will be their destination. The homecoming after slavery, colonization and destruction of wealth management will come a full circle. There is little appreciation for hardworking diligent group. The world runs on bully tactics and military games.
Yeah, considering the lack of training and lack of schools provided by the British, yes, trained Indians, even minimally trained, would have been a help, except Africans needed to first escape being a foot stool.
Those East African "Asians" then became the most economically successful group in the UK. There was a documentary on them which ended with the interviewer asking one what he would like to say to Idi Amin if he was watching. He replied "Thanks Idi".
These "East Indians" always kept their money in the UK. That was one of the issues inside Uganda: employment was for East Indians while they controlled, and milked, the economy. That's WHY Idi Amin kicked them OUT.
Hmm. I used to deal with a man who opened a successful AV/Electronics store in Berkshire. He told me that if they had owned a business in Uganda, when they were expelled from the country they were given 75,000 by the UK. I have no reason to disbelieve him, he never took goods on account, always paid for his stock up front in cash, and he had a nice big house in Windsor.
One of the "issues" with Uganda was the East Indians were banking their "cash" in the UK (which is forever) or Switzerland, and milking the economy while NOT employing native Ugandans. Unfortunately, Idi's "solution" only made things worse, which jhappens........ALL the time.
I lived through that period so when people here tell me that black peoples cannot be racist I laugh bitterly. Met many of those Ugandan and Kenyan Indians who were pushed out and all their properties seized They have been very successful in Canada and the USA and Uganda and Kenya are still poor.
Your comment is spot on , many do believe that blacks are not racist but on the contrary there are and show it to the minority’s living in these African countries.
I used to live in Durban, South Africa. The city still has a sizable Indian population because of indentured Indians being brought over to work in the sugarcane plantations. The only race riots that ever occurred in the city during apartheid were Africans rioting against Indians, which is weird when you think about it.

It has always been a mystery as to why do almost all African rulers tend to become dictators. They hardly ever get replaced by a democratic process. Are the reasons cultural?
No. Because of powerful european nations destroying africa for their own personal gains and building empires on the continent, it has been under constant european colonialism longer than even asia. So when overt colonialism finally stopped after WW2, what was left of african nations were broken, scattered and poverty ridden. At this point, a strong nationalist leader with a long term vision of their country could have saved their own african nations but europeans still wanted to profit at the expense of africa. So they bribed military leaders into initiating coups and selling out their countries remaining resources to that nation. Some leaders resisted and they were driven away by european backed coups and led to the same situation. So africans gave up on their countries for a while and remained covert colonies of europeans even till today. Democracy is a good way to govern people if your economic status is good enough for your people. But it's not a good choice when you have to bring your country out from the gutter. For that some military leaders lead coups thinking that dictatorship by them can lead to a strong surge forward and it can work in the short term. But eventually, they either get corrupt by european money or local power and end up doing nothing good.

When the Ugandans turned against the Indians, all Indians across Africa panicked, especially those who had females in their families. Reports coming out of Uganda was that military officials would find out where there were young Indian females, and then the parents were forced to hand them over, sometimes in forced marriages. That is the great thing about Indians they identify with the place where they live and are loyal to their respective countries and not by their religion.
Even today, why can't they indigenous Africans cultivate an entrepreneurial class and culture? They go to school, get papers and look for jobs in European and Asian firms. They do not create things. They just consume. Creators are more powerful than mere consumers.

Am an African, and that‘s what I always say. I think colonisation affected Africans so badly, to such levels that they became consumers only. Many Africans think of having or getting something, but they do not think about the power and the control the producer wields. It’s more having an object, and for others it’s to show off. I think poverty also makes people crave for things, so people are totally satisfied as consumers!
@@danielmuriithi8486 I think it´s mainly due to colonialism because before colonialism, Africans made their own tools, crafts, stools e.t.c.and built their own homes and huts. Today Africans have lost the art to produce. Long ago the cultures taught us, that we had to create what we needed. Today people go to school in order to get jobs, and buy what they need. Very few people go to school with the goal to create and most schools and universities do not empower learners to be creators!
It seems that when an outside culture intersects with the many vast and varied African cultures, that outside culture surpasses the African people in nearly every conceivable way that matters to quality of life. It doesn't matter whether that culture is British, French, Dutch, Chinese or Indian, the story is nearly always the same. Dr Sowell is correct in his list of reasons for why Asians were not happy to go back to Uganda after the NRM tried to restore things to pre-Amin era. However, he lists the push and forgets the pull. In the decade-plus since the expulsion many found home in GB, Canada and other more hospitable places. The "new new" country often did not offer them the same level of economical opportunities, but compensated for that with law and order, true democracy and personal freedoms, quality of life, access to education and medicine. Also, those countries already had established "Desi" communities, which made their surrounding even better (think arranging marriage when you're in a remote African depot vs Bradford, England). Most asked themselves why should they go back to the developing world when they were offered a path to citizenship in the richest countries on earth? It made no sense going back to India, much less to Africa. I met someone who came back to "see where my family had assets". She said that there's no logic in leaving her town in Alberta and starting fresh in the western Ugandan town she was expelled from as a baby. She wasn't there long enough to asses how unwelcoming the locals were towards her. But things are not absolute. You can go visit today and find the Asian business owners are still there, albeit probably not in the same numbers as in the 1960s. My guess is that Kenya and Tanzania Asian families grew and filled in the vacuum left by the ones who were expelled and elected to stay in their sheltering countries.
I would just like to add that the post Independence Indian government 's apathy towards Indians in Africa was not just about Third World solidarity. The first Indian Prime Minister disdained private economic enterprise at home too in favour of large state owned public sector enterprises scaling and occupying the "commanding heights of the economy " as he put it. Further, the hostility was not just economic policy but social policy as well as he disdained the trading community in general and in his tenure and of his successors saw the general caricaturing of this class in India also as venal, oppressive and exploitative and hence who in turn had to be suppressed. This was the situation in India proper as well.

The British used the Indians and non Africans as a buffer class to keep the Africans down , which were not the Indians fault either and did not develop the local talents or encourage them to get into trade; as a result, the Indians were able to dominate and had the opportunity to improve their trading skills and past them on to their kids.

I think I remember a movie where part of the plot or subplot was an Ugandan of Indian heritage who was expelled from his property and the country.
I remember a scene where he was emphatically insisting he was African, as he was born there. Nevertheless, to the regime in power, he was considered Indian. I think the actor was Roshan Seth, who also was in the movie Gandhi, maybe that is the movie I’m thinking of.

@@bluebirdman8185 I was 8 years old in lower primary school. Some of my best friends were of Indian descent. I did not understand the bigger picture but ventured to roam into empty homes for left over toys and sweets. Most of the homes were later put under the management of the " Departed Asians Custodian Board". It appeared that almost all private residential houses in towns were owned by Asians and some by Europeans.
Actually the Africans are learning especially in Kenya. I just visited the town I grew up in after 20 years. Before the high street was 95% Asian shops now it’s is the other way round.
well, foreign companies should leave, and stop looting African resources, then they won't consume other foreigners' stuff. Creators?, many inventions were from blacks, but we all will pretend nothing is stolen. Egypt is a first example
@@Kiriza22 That's not colonialism's fault though
Maybe it is time, much to the consternation of the woke, that we admit that the problem with Africa are the various cultures that are in it.

Africa doesn't have any problems, foreigners brought problems there.. just let them live their lives in peace
The Africans don't have the historical cultural development that the other old societies in Asia and Europe have. Things like importance of education, brutal work ethic of the rice farmers of Asia etc etc. They by and large just live for the present day.

Indians in all parts of world are successful, when Indians left Uganda, the country went backwards for a long period. Indians played a very important role in East Africa.
What were Indians doing in East Africa ?
What Africans do in Europe now? They looked for economical opportunities. And, compare with most Africans now in Europe they weren't an Economic ballast. Actually, I don't care but it's funny that Africans in general find any opportunity to blame others in their economical problems but not themselves. Victimhood is an unproductive cultural behaviour.

Also don't forget that the first Indian PM saw himself as a white man. So there was also an element of racism involved.
@@gadheroo That is in your fantasy, incubated by complete propaganda.

People shouldn't begrudge the success of others. Just as individuals have different strengths, certain communities excel at certain things. Entrepreneurship, business, music, sport, academic enquiry, scientific research, innovation and so on.
The real tragedy is that the indigenous population refused to recognize their inabilities and instead blamed foreigners for their shortcomings. If Ugandans had simply accepted their station in life as junior economic partners of foreign economic powers, imagine how much more prosperous they'd be today.
They would have become a senior partner today in foreign land..
