We have same rituals in Assam during Ambabuchi which is considered Kamakhya maa's period time. Hell still ppl touch ladies who have periods as untouchables
Same here in maharashtra. We have a traditional here in maharashtra to celebrate girls getting her 1st period in life while treating her some sweets. My mom did the same to me.
Yeah probably because Allah is considerate towards women and wanted to protect her from men's amorous assaults during these days of discomfort and pain.
Yea, even in india, when someone needs a pad, we become drug dealers. When we need to use the restroom on our periods, we aren't able to explain why we have to go to the restroom so urgently cuz we have to explain about our periods. Once I was lying in my class cuz of stomach pain and a boy came and asked what happened. I said I was on my period and my stomach hurts. The girl next to me hushed me and said, what are u saying, he is a BOY. I was like, I dont freaking care, I bleed every month and experience horrible pain that the least I can expect from "boys" is to understand my pain and leave me alone. It’s irony that women themselves make this more difficult to other women then men! We all know how our moms...aunties and grandmothers react during our so called #that_time_of_month 😿
Right! My mom literally went into a trauma when I got my first period at the age of 11. She thought I was too young to get them. She even took me to a doctor and the doctor told her it was absolutely normal. During that time, everytime she would scold me for any other reason, her ending statement would be- Abb toh periods bhi start ho gaye fir bhi harkate ni chodni! Reading some of these comments, my heart goes out to all the women and trans people who menstruate, who have often been discriminated and ostracized because of the normal processes of their bodies. Great content as always, Swaddle!
I still remember that it was not too long since I started having my periods, so I still had some difficulties like not realizing that my period had come, etc. So when I was in 8th standard, my period came after 2-3 classes on April 4, the very first day of the session, and as luck would have it, I didn't realize until a classmate pointed it out that I had stained my uniform. The luck seemed to be getting worse as I didn't have any pads or even a cloth and not any money also. Yeah, every wrong thing coming together on the same day! So my classmate arranged INR 10 for me and I went to the washroom and tried to figure out how the pad vending machine works for the next five minutes as my school had installed it recently and I had no idea how to use it. So after I finally fetched the pad, I washed up and realised that my white uniform is still stained and as I was inexperienced, I started panicking because I had no clue how to hid it. You see my school is DAV which is co-ed and in INDIA so you can imagine how conservative it was as periods are still a taboo in India and not been explained to the girls even, let alone the boys. So that all added to my problem. As I found no way whatsoever to hide my stain, I decided to not waste more time as I had already spent 20 minutes in the washroom and just cover it with my hand and walk up to the classroom. Once I reached the classroom, I saw that a female teacher was already teaching math. So I asked her the permission to enter the class and wanted nothing more than sitting in my bench and become invisible. But no, the fate had other plans for me. The teacher asked me questions as to where I was for this much time and asked me to come to her and I had to walk the entire path to the front of the class, putting my little situation in front of the whole class to see, and mind you it was India and it was a co-ed school which had skipped the entire reproduction and adolescent chapters. Finally I told her that I got my periods and she somehow dismissed me. Once I turned around I saw every girl and every boy looking at me and I was burning in embarrassment, the embarrassment caused due to periods being a taboo. The rest of the day passed and by the time I walked out of the class once school ended and sat on my bus, every other section of 8 had known about my accident. The reason behind writing this much was that we should break this taboo and educate our girls and our boys to know about periods and how they are absolutely normal, natural and beautiful and not something to be ashamed of.
I know I would have buried my face like an ostrich if it were me luckily I got my periods just after I reached home but our school has white skirt and even a single drop causes stress to me . Once I got up to collect my notebook from teachers table and while returning back I saw a few boys laughing and looking at me at first I didn't realize but then my friend told me about leak and I can't tell I was so stressed out bcz I had to cover stain and their laughs made me feel embarrassed for some reason but from then the incident hasn't quite gotten out my mind so I can totally agree with how you feel
So the same happened to me while I was at a competition But in my case a teacher from the other school pointed it out It was embarrassing as hell I realised that every school puts white in their uniform so that they could shame "stained girls".

Me too. I always thought of it too because of tv ads and I wanted to try too😂😂😂😂 I remember day when I woke up, I saw blood and started stuffing toilet paper inside and tried to hind it. A few hours later, my sister noticed it and I cried on the spot. Then my sister told me about it, I was completely shocked. Later, My mom told my dad about it that day and he just smiled.
When I was very young, it was I guess my 2nd or 3rd period. I was very hesitant in throwing the pad in the dustbin (although It was covered in paper) as my brother was standing near the dustbin, so for the time being I put it in the drawer of my almirah (in which I kept my books). Later, I forgot to throw it. One day, my mother found it and she was so furious that she called my dad in the room to get me scolded. I couldn't be more ashamed and embarrassed. She literally gave my pad in his hands. He was like- Sharam aati hai? Kya, kya hota hai ye? Potty hi toh hoti hai! Books ki almari mai rakhte hai! I never shared this with anyone but this incident had such a deep impression on my mind. I always try to forget it.

Ok so this is what goes in my school... In our school we have assembly programme from 9AM to 9:30AM. Usually after that student's are told to move to their classes. But we are told to stay back when any announcement has to made by the teacher. But whenever the announcement is something related to periods, all the boys are asked to go back to the classes, all male teachers go back to staff room, mic are taken away, and all the girls are asked to sit close to each other. And then teacher talks abt it.😑 They are making this topic into something to hide..or something that should not be talked loud..I can't understand why 😶
I can proudly say being from an all girls school I have never felt embarrassed for being on my periods...we could literally announce it in class and ask for pads during emergencies with no shame or taboo associated with it and this has really helped me shape my ideas and notions about periods as a very positive, normal occurrence and nothing to be ashamed about and I try to spread this idea in my society and hopefully the coming generations will have it better.

All the boys were, I don't know exactly, but maybe aware of the situation as they were like, laughing at the back. I got so pissed off that I was about to say something but she just pulled me back with head down and teary eyes and said, "iss duniya hame koi nhi samajhta! Women are life givers. In times of early worship of the goddess... this was the time when we acknowledged the ultimate lifesource of the world - the sacred feminine. The worst thing that I asked to a girl in my whole life was, "What is Periods?" since I never knew what was periods, even as a college student, I asked it since she was my best friend but even she said that don't ask to other girls, they'll think about you as some sort of creep. After that, I asked about it to my other female friends and they said that it is ok to ask about periods because it's natural. I don't know but still I feel ashamed for asking a girl about periods.😟😟. Crct me if I'm wrong.
I once went to a medical store for buying pads and despite me telling the shopkeeper that I don't need it to be wrapped in a newspaper he wrapped it saying, "Aise accha nahi lagta hai."
Tysm Swaddle! This means a lot to me! I live in a "typical" Indian joint family where periods are considered a big taboo. Here I'm not allowed to step out of my bedroom for the 1st 3 days of my period!!! It is so frustrating and depressing that I've to deal with this stigma around my period while I'm PMSing sooo badly!
Last year in my college, they asked all the boys to leave so they could tell the girls to dispose of their pads in separate can. I don't understand if menstruation is something shameful to be hidden out from the opposite sex, thereby increasing misconceptions and weird rituals surrounding periods.
You know I read About Menstruation as a 13 year old for the first time in Biology. I was so fascinated by it. And my admiration and respect for women grew Skybounds the uncomfortable 5 days a month for almost 40 years for 3.5 billion women. Is the reason Human Society continues to thrive(i mean kids, later i found its better to avoid kids because Earth cant take more humans) but then i was called Disgusting and wierd by my whole class including girls, For my fascination with periods. But my teacher was proud of me for top scoring the Reproduction Chapter. And she said you wrote the best mensuration Explanation by a 13 year old of her career. She said dont lose that Intrest its not bad its admirable to have this rare empaty. Even though 20 boys and 20 girls Judged me hard made jokes about me. That inspired me to continue advocate talking about periods and removing Stigma. I cried when i saw Pad man's trailer. Because i finally knew, i was not only crazy Person with the rare empathy.
I would really like to see a video about forcing your 18+ old child to get married or forcing him/her into a marriage what steps the child can take against the parents.
Yes but the video did address this tradition. I'm a Tamilian & here, I really a celebration of the fact that the girl has become fertile & ready to be married off. Not that they are happy about her mestruation.
@@Vishal-Ravishankar I don't know about old time that much i'm a telugu girl we have a tradition atleast we've to feed 5 elders , we were made to sit seperately 5 days were they give all nutrientious food and easy digestive food and they apply us turmeric for our skin , they take special care about us that time. The viewpoint of periods being dirty was redundant since Ancient Hindu cultures. Just look at Kamakhya Temple in Kamrup, there there is worship of the genitals of Devi Sati, even the cavewater(thought to be menses of Devi Sati) are sprinkled as you go inside the cave where there is worshipping. It was only in late 1700s when British came to India, trying to empower Brahmins made this a taboo. Nobody knows this and keeps on blaming our ancestors for the same.
1:10 In Islam, we do call ourselves impure not when we are just bleeding, but also when we pee, poop, fart, after intercourse, constantly bleeding etc. We just need to take ablution (clean ourselves correctly) after natural impurities happen. We do not pray while menstruating because we suffer from pain. We do not touch Holy Quran because whether you’re menstruating or not, you have to be cleaned properly. it means no bleeding,no pain,no natural impurity state. Only mentioning one quote from Quran clearly don't represent the whole concept of it. Sometimes it can be misleading also.
1 week ego there was laxmi puja. I had periods then but my mother let me to make Alpana /mandala /in house. I also decorated the bhogthalies. In durga puja my mother also never forbade me for going in pandal with periods. Actually I am forbade for nothing in periods. Thank god for such a mom.
Mine happened at an airport once and it was definitely NOT fine . Spending a five hour long flight trying to hide bloodstains was hell - I still don't know how I hid it so well the whole time .
I was on a trip once, and we got stuck in a 12 HOUR JAM and we couldn't go back too. And my frickin period just came at the time. Add to spice it's a taboo in my family. p.s. -- it was my second period, and in the first year it was quite irregular, I got it after 7 months and that too at the trip, as if my uterus wants revenge 🤡
one of my friend post a picture claiming that it is true to avoid temples during periods and support this theory for some research i dont know. ever since we don't talk anymore!
Well that is bcz the body becomes a bit weak and it needs rest so it's just advice to rest and not exert by going temple but it doesn't stop from doing puja It's not wrong but the way we see it has to change its not impure process it's a pure thing there are many things like these which were told to ppl which are scientifically true but earlier (abt thousands of years ago) many ppl weren't educated enough so instead of telling them the scientific reasons they were told by other methods like devotion etc.
Why don't you tell him about different rituals about menstruation in Hinduism. What your friend said is applicable to certain temples like sabrimala but not for all. www.indictoday.com/quick-reads/rajo-parba-rejoicing-menstruation-womanhood/
I am telling this coz I want everyone to know that what I am gonna express isn't fiction and they deserve equal and should fight for it if they don't get it. I started having my periods when I was in 5th Class and I am fortunate to write that I was never discriminated against EVER I have no restrictions during my periods except that I should not do vigorous physical exercise coz it automatically leads to pain I am not even restricted to enter temple coz my family thinks its a rubbish people believe in. Sometimes my brother brings me the pain killer medicine during my periods I first read reproduction in 8th class and then 10th class and luckily none of my teachers ever taught it as a dirty thing they even discussed the social myths and cleared all are academic n non academic doubts infront of the whole class There was no awkwardness in talking about this even between classmates as this was in our syllabus and we cleared each other doubts respectfully. Please dont make this taboo as this is a beautiful gift of god so that human race could continue🙌🙌🙌🙏
I think the most disgusting thing about periods is how gross you feel with the pain and sluggishness. I think if they want women to quarantine during periods, they should put a Netflix subscription, a soft blanket, and strawberries in those huts. It should be something to celebrate that you can give birth to children
Absolutely they relax as much as they want in menstrual phase ....infact these are the days when they should get more proper care and treatment regarding there health... Because woman goes through hormonal changes which makes them feel irritated (mood swings ) , pain in abdomen , cramps so ya....they should try to chill in that days definately
But if we carefully observe that orthodox rule ( Although it shouldn't be a rule at ideal place it should be opinion and that too is applicable in older days not now ) then we will find that intention behind that rule was to give woman proper rest which they deserve during menstrual phase
But we stupid human made it a rule ...it shouldn't be a rule the intention behind all those restrictions was to give rest to woman but we stupid humans end up assuming it as rule ...and then our grandparents and parents are stupidly following that rule
I am a female teenager and there are so many myths regarding it. A person can easily buy a packet of cigarettes which is harmful and when it comes to buying sanitary pads which are a basic necessity for females and transgender , the shopkeeper looks at us as if we have grown two heads.

Hahahha.. fucking true, feeling the same...
They treat pads like drugs. "Hey man, put my pads in this black bag, no one will see. They are top-secret. No one can know I have periods. "
I believe that the thinking of society will change soon due to presence of people like us

Some of my friends used to say periods to bunk the class with no repercussions

But I felt like there's nothing to be embarrassed about. Being on Period is a completely natural process and should be normalized in society . Girls , please stop being embarrassed about being on your period , this is how we are built as a woman and should embrace it rather than being ashamed.
Being the daughter of a nurse, I started considering all things natural non-taboo and started speaking about it openly with my peers, who did look embarrassed. But eventually they lost the stigma and started talking about it and treating it like any normal thing.
Nice topic @Swaddle. Please keep spreading the word.

A big reason in me drawing away from religion and stop going to mandirs was because I was made to feel that my body was impure. When I found out that girls aren't allowed to go to religious places during periods.. well I reject them completely now. Before I do used to get scared when I see a lot blood but since I started my periods nothing scares me 😂
This is the reason why I am not scared to go for medical field and my lil brother asks, 'are u not scared?'

When a girl gets her first period people start thinking that now she's grown up but they don't know that her mentality is still the age of her. Maybe that's why girls get mature fast then boys.
And then teacher talks abt it.😑
They are making this topic into something to hide..or something that should not be talked loud..I can't understand why 😶
I've never taken my period as a burden and I've never felt embarrassed bout it too. It's just a completely normal process for people who say periods is something disgusting remember that pregnancy which is considered as a blessing won't be a possibility if there were no periods I'm so happy that my parents taught me that it's not something to be embarrassed about in fact most of the time it's my dad who buys me sanitary pads from the store and he's never felt embarrassed bout it....and I'm really happy that I'm the one who explained what periods are to my younger brother and now he knows it's not something that's a taboo but actually a blessing

Unfortunately we have been made to forget the power of the female over the years, and believe that women’s bodies and various forms life takes on, like blood, is somehow tainted. We’ve forgotten that blood, water, milk is life and earth herself is a woman....
We need to make people aware of how important women are in everyone's life.

I hate the pseudo ideologies about periods that still exist in our society.
