I have some carpeted stairs. I have been wanting to do something like this for years. You make it look so easy, even though I know it is a lot of work! Thank you for making this video and posting it.
I've been looking for an idea to modernise my staircase which leads up from my livingroom & this looks great but the only thing is I have 13 stairs so I may be doing this for a while but thanks.. Liz from bonnie Scotland 😄
Smart to reuse the stair railing! A lot of people are tearing out wood banisters for metal railings so they look modern with the new stairs. Great job. I've done this but our bullnose didn't come attached to the tread. It was super difficult to deal with. Next time I will definitely go for a one piece design.
Melissa you literally have no fear, I have 40+ years of carpentry experience and my wants me to do exactly this and I am being gun shy. Great job and keep the videos coming.
You are an amazing person. I don’t know how you do it with a family your size. You’re not only a great DIYer but your time management skills has to be top notch
The after looks a lot better than before! We did the same-removed carpet from our stairs, but we went further & redid the rails. We built a wall 1/2 way up & added modern looking rails. I think I prefer the openness of our old rails.
You did great! I think it's a big improvement. Got to be honest, tho. I cringe whenever somebody calls something "ugly". I mean, yeah, it's not my cup of tea either, but *somebody* thought it was beautiful at one time. Eye of the beholder and all that. 🤷♀️ Keep up the good work!
Great job and great results, at a fraction of what it would cost to have a contractor do it. You're pretty handy with power tools and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. For future, if you're ever doing such a reno again: if you want to trim the tread edge straight, nail a strip of wood to work as a guide for your jigsaw shoe (or your circular saw shoe). A couple of nails is enough and the holes will eventually get covered with the new tread anyway.
Hi Melissa. I enjoy your videos so much. I want to compliment you on your choices for the stairway. The black paint with the laminate pattern looks marvelous. How ever, I want to caution you about stairs. I am in the construction industry and there is a science to stairs and the human body. After the bottom riser, all of the other risers should be the same. This is because the body sets a rhythm as it climbs stairs and if the top riser is taller then a person will inevitably trip. This can occur even if the difference is 1/16". In your case, the top riser is going to be shorter so you can expect a stomp at the top of the stairs because the body has self regulated to the other risers. The body will think that the surface is at the same level as the rest and assume a stop and the foot will fall the rest of the distance. As I said before, you do a great job in everything I have seen you do and I hope that you keep doing these videos for a long time. Just store a helpful tip in the back of your brain for the next stair project.🙂
@@WelcometotheWoodsBlog Glad to hear that. I had forgotten that you had redone the hallway floor also. As I said before, keep up the good work. I have learned a couple of handy tips watching you.
They look SO GOOD. You are making me want to rip the worn carpet off my stairs right now. And I think that railing still totally works. It would have been a great opportunity to replace if you wanted but it's still metal and fairly modern looking. Fresh paint and it works!
I'm encouraged by this video that my idea to change my stairs can probably be done. My home is only 3 years old but I never liked the carpet or flooring that the builder installed. I am excited about making over my first floor and my stairs.
I can really feel your pain on this project. I removed carpeting from my main stairs a while back, only I had about twice as many stairs to deal with. Removing every single one of the staples and nails was time-consuming, and without gloves, a bit hazardous to one's health ; ) I ended up staining/painting my stairs with alternating colors on the treads and risers: a deep black stain+sealer on the treads, and white primer + paint on the risers.
Hi Melissa, Great upgrade on your lakehouse. It was unfortunate that the wood beneath the carpenting was so badly damaged. But your solution looks great, and really suits the house. You where also right to keep and use the rails again. It looked like a bit of a struggle, but the results where worth all the effort. Chapeau to you ☺
I appreciate how much work you put into the steps. They look great. What a transformation. I know how difficult it is to remove carpet from stairs. I also removed all the nails, staples, and tack strips. In the process, I had a little slip with the utility knife. I ended up in the ER. Although I hit an artery, It wasn't too serious. I have been working on houses for 40 years, I should have known better. On top of that, I work in a Vocational school, where along with the students, all the teachers have to complete a 10 hour OSHA Safety course. I say half jokingly, they should revoke my OSHA Certificate. After a few days of rest I returned to my steps. Since I was planning on re-carpeting the stairs, I had to add piece of wood to the part that hangs over because after 70 years of carpeting and re-carpeting Most of them were loose, missing or like Swiss cheese. I nailed and glued them. I was aware that if I ever planned to refinish the stairs, they would have to be taken apart and re-installed with hard wood, so I wasn't concerned about the kind of wood I used as long as it had the same shape and was solid. They were ready for the carpet layer.
The hallway and steps look like a different house, the carpet before was so awful and the after was so stunning. The beams, the new staircase the hallway and kitchen all of it is so nicely ties together and just looks like it was meant to be in this home, you are reviving this home to its full glory and it is a pleasure to see and follow along. Keep up the amazing work and I cannot wait to see what you will do next😍❤️😍
Love it! I would think about repainting the black parts of the stairs and railing to just a shade lighter so it's not as harsh between the floor etc. Maybe bring in that charcoal gray colors you used on the exterior?
I rent and said enough with the gross carpeting on the stairs. My son ripped off the carpet and padding for me and I cleaned up. Wow how gross and the dirt revealed under the padding. It took awhile to remove staples and nails and dirt. That was 5 years ago. They need a fresh coat of paint which I don’t mind. Very easy to clean👍👍👍
I've pulled carpet off a fair share of stairs, and it's almost impossible to do without needing a band-aid or two. It's even worse if the carpet has been pet soiled just plain old. I've seen some hideous stair overlays done by flooring companies, and although I'm not a fan of overlays, you did a nice job.
I always look forward to and enjoy seeing what your doing next in the house. Some of the colors and material you use I question, until I see the end product. You are making me look outside of the box on some of my own projects. The only thing that I would change is that you don't always wear eye protection. ESPECIALLY WHEN USING A SAW! Sorry to sound like your dad, but we all want to see many more of your projects. Without an eye Patch. Keep up the great work, and don't forget the eye protection.
Instead of a jimmy bar a large flat head screwdriver is great for lifting carpet rails. Tap in the screwdriver to the left of the first nail then twist the screwdriver, that should pull up the first nail. Then put the screw driver on the right side to completely remover the nail. You can then slide the flat head screwdriver along the rail to the next nail and repeate. Leave the jimmy bar for when the rail has been painted or glued down.
I love this thank you so much! Never thought of painting the raisers but it gives me hope! I did wonder about the tripping part. You demonstrated how it would be a trip hazard, cut it off and put it back on. Why? I will probably have the same issue when carpet comes off
Looks amazing, great work! I have something similar going on in my house and I'm a bit nervous to tear into it. I know that once I get started I'm committed. You make it look super easy, so I'm pumped to get started. Thank you for the awesome video.
I much prefer the carpeted stair cases. They look super cool actually. Are they in trend at the moment? No! but like everything it’s a personal choice at the end.
Looks lovely! You're good at what you do. Seriously great job. Will you be giving the black another coat as it looks a little washed out now after the dust? 💯❤
Thanq for the video, YOU put a lot of men to shame. The stairs look top notch. I've been pleading with my husband to sand our banister down for 10 years as I can't do it, he just refuses to
I loved the makeover. I'd redo the railing if you see something you think looks better. But I like skat you did. I'm going my project turns out good. I can't find a video with my idea.
That’s a tricky cut you made with the jigsaw. Circular saw would give a straight cut but won’t get into the corner well. Router like you suggested might work pretty well. Handsaw might be your best option. Not really a great solution though unless they could be removed and reinstalled, but that’s likely a major job.
While it is aesthetically very pleasing now (really love your choice of black risers and the wood finished steps against the beige wall), is the depth of each stair now up to building code? Taking so much off of each step area may be great for your smaller foot, but could become a hazard for others. Use caution.
I don’t think you understand how the stair tread I added was constructed… it’s the same as the previous, a standard 10” deep, because the bullnose was built on.
The tread was not shortened. It's actually an extra 1/2 wider than before and now a standard size: 10 inches. I don't think you understand how the prefab treads I installed were made.
Nice! Do you have videos with stairs treads exposed from both sides? Mine is this style and if I have to cut, adding the endcaps would be very interesting. I can’t think of how that can happen

I am so impressed! That carpeting on the stairs took the house back to another era.

Each riser is exactly the same. The height added by the treads is equal to the height added by the landing strip/new flooring at the top.

I don’t know about it looking “modern”, but it’s definitely modernized those stairs. Well done.

Hi Melissa. This is so much better!! I bet you’re so happy that crusty carpet is gone
Thanks Hana!
Just jumping from one thing to the next is crazy
I think the stairs and railing look fabulous. Lots of work involved to get to that point, but you did well. Beautiful results.
4:43 that cut-in work was super-human 😮 Amazing transformation!
The railing looks great with the beautifully done stairs.

Keeping the rail was nice to keep some old but made new. Lovin it!

I have a very similar stair rail in my home. We recently replaced treads and risers but left the rail. I like it!

New home owner. You are giving me ideas! Great job with that result for the stairs
Have you ever considered changing the angle of the blade relative to the multi-tool? It's an amazing tool when used with forethought.
Love the stairs and glad you kept the railing!!!
Looks soooo great. Nice job. You make all these projects so entertaining.
I liked it better before!
Jk- looks so much better now . I think you have inspired me to tackle mine!
Nice! I agree on the multi-tool- I use mine all.the.time.
ha i did this to my stairway which was twice as long! That finished me off that day!
I much prefer the carpeted stair cases. They look super cool actually.
Are they in trend at the moment? No! but like everything it’s a personal choice at the end.
+1 on saving the iron railing. Easily the least intrusive option in that size house.
Nice work. Really lovely finish. ❤
wow, nice job! nice color combination selection
Great video you go sister!😊
Beautiful job. But for me I would also add a runner for better footing and no slippage. My husband can be terribly clumsy!
Great job. It looks really good
The transformation is amazing!!! :o I was looking for some DIY to change mine, you certainly inspired me! :D
That turned out perfect 👌
Nice job 👍
That looks awesome and so much cleaner and better now x
Awesome, thank you for this, I'll start on my stairs shortly and it really helps
never seen those before, super nice treds imo.
Looks great! I really dont know why people carpet stairs?! I have slipped on the carpet and fallen down the stairs more than once in my life.
Looks great. I’m about to replace mine also. Thanks 😊
Esa alfombra era horrible, ahora se ve excelente eres muy fuerte y creativa
Happy that you kept the original stair railing. Beautiful
So impressed, looks great, well done.

Wow it's amazing, nice transformation girl, I love it 💕
Oh my gosh U did awesome transformation, great job & idea. Thx 4 sharing.
When the tread is shortened it makes it tuff on people with big feet, especially older folks.

Amazed at all of the projects you have completed! Great job on everything I have seen (probably 30-40 videos).
LOVE this lady!
Looks amazing! 💕
Great job! I think I would have used beige paint instead of black paint to match the wall color.
Use a fence/straight edge for your saws. It will keep your edges straight.
Nice job Mel ! Merry Christmas to you and your family !!
this was very nice and well done
