These are indeed heavy issues that are tackled in this series. I haven't read this one yet, but erasing memories to keep secret identities not only protects the hero, it also protects those they associate with in their day to day lives. I can see Batman being ok with this, but not someone like Superman, who has always been shown as one with the highest moral values. It seems like an interesting morale issue to write a story about.
