I saw the movie yesterday, and while I understand what Phillips and Phoenix were trying to achieve-their depiction of The Joker was unique and thought-provoking, attributing his personality to real-life mental illness-the film was not pleasant to watch. It felt like watching a very dark second movie of a 1970s drive-in double feature. I don’t think it’s fair to use such an iconic character as The Joker to create a serious art film about the negative effects of mental illness and the marginalization of the mentally ill. It would have been better if Phillips and Phoenix made the movie without tying it to The Joker, as it felt more like a Paul Thomas Anderson film than a DC Comics movie.
I always knew it. Harley Quinn is a pretty minor and insignificant character. She was the one obsessed with the Joker, but he couldn’t care less about her, beyond enjoying being idolized. They've been trying to elevate Harley Quinn to the same level as the Joker because, you know, woke culture..
Totally agree with most of your points, but it's not being held back for being artsy. In fact, I'd argue the opposite. Warner Brothers was nervous because the first film made Joker a sympathetic character and some people were outraged by that, so this movie was toned down into dullness. I think it happened because it's a studio movie mascarading as an art film.
I knew this would happen. The first movie challenged mainstream government and media narratives. And I knew this movie would go back to the mainstream narrative. USA are the good guys. Rich people are smarter and harder working. And poor people deserve to be poor.
Its like warner bros resented the first one being a smashed hit and went all out to delete this film before it started gaining momentum and become a successful franchise
I remember feeling a little disheartened upon learning that the sequel would be a musical. At least I can save my money for more worthwhile things. Thank you, Andy! 🍿
To anyone who's thinking that the ending is good, The Joker who puts on his makeup and suit, kills people, many people in his universe was considering him the prince of crime and every one was calling him the joker then turning up after 5 years from the first movie not being The Real Joker or being A Joker who inspires another one is just way bad, It's just like making a Batman trilogy with a guy wearing a batsuit, beating thugs at night, facing batman's villains then making an ending at the end of the 3rd of the trilogy hinting that this guy wasn't batman. I'm really disappointed.
If you think that loser Arthur Fleck could ever grown into the role of the Joker, you must be smoking some strong shit. Arthur Fleck is a miserable joke of a person, he could never be Gotham's Prince of crime...
Tbh, I actually enjoyed this movie. I watched it last Sunday and I heard that it was bad and I came in expecting it to be bad but I didn’t see why it was. I understand what Todd Philips was trying to make. The type of movie that encapsulates the fame of serial killers, making them celebrities when they didn’t mean to become and what that fame does to a person and to their fans. So, yeah, of course, they are gonna keep talking about what happened in the last movie, like how infamous serial killers will always be remembered for that one thing they did. This movie challenged the idea of Arthur being more than what he is or just a normal sick guy. It revealed a bit more about the back story, showing a bit more that he is not what everybody think he is. Yeah, sure, if the songs were original maybe it would’ve been better but I was fine with what we gotten. Playing up the fantasy after Arthur and Lee’s romance and then it came crashing when she didn’t get what she wanted. This movie also doesn’t pander to “This is what’s supposed to happen in a movie”. Lee literally said that in this movie. The car bomb was not Lee coming to save him, it was a random fan trying to free him or trying to kill him because they feel heartbroken. Lee killed herself for feeling worthless and betrayed. Arthur dies because…yeah, he enjoyed the fame, he felt like he had a place but soon realized people like the idea of Joker, not who he really is. And no, I don’t believe that the guy who killed Arthur will become the new Joker because the idea of Joker is already tainted and the reality of the situation is that Arthur was upset with his life and he wanted revenge and he got his revenge in the last movie then he wanted to die, then the media and his fans made into this icon, this hero of sorts, Arthur was lied to and unfortunately suffered the consequences of his crazy fandom for not being the Joker, which I feel like everybody in real life is being like. You’re having this expectation that the Joker will go on this murder spree for the message that was established in the first one when it was never really about that. This version of Joker is not THE Joker. That was already settled in the last one. Don’t know why you expected anything different. This is about the character Arthur Fleck and what he’s going through, not the idea of his persona. If you don’t get that, “You wouldn’t get it” as Arthur would say
@@TrueNorthMediaProductions TL;DR I like the movie, I like the music the way it is. I understand the message and Arthur’s journey. Don’t know why people thought this Joker is trying to be the real deal Joker when it has always been just an Elseworld story and shouldn’t be taken too seriously
it was a total tease. the first 40 min wasn't terrible but the ending is where they stab you in the heart with "how dare you like this character. now take this losers"
I don’t think the people behind the production of the movie had the intention of making an actual “Joker” movie. Instead they used the massive popularity of the genre and the character as a Trojan horse to make their own social commentary film. Clever but that’s bullshit
It's like they purposely dismantled and undermined the character the first movie created so well. It's like they were trying to send a message "If you think The Joker is a cool character and are considering his brand of anarchy yourself, THIS is what will REALLY happen to you" to discourage serial killing.
did anyone expect this to be good? I was surprised with the 1st one, I thought the ads for it looked terrible, but I ended up really enjoying the film. but wen they said musical for part 2two. that jus seemed so far from the original. I mean, I might watch this, if I remember to. maybe. who knos. I thought I wudnt like the first one. u never kno.
@mightguy3118 well, I jus read the ending and it made me angry. apparently Joker gets shanked to def n prison n the end. n his kller is the new joker to take his place. it ain't worth watching after I read that. fk this movie.
Not only was the movie disappointing, but the title was completely midleading. Halfway through the movie it's revealed that Harley Quinn isn't mentally insane; she checked herself in/out voluntarily for sport. The movie has nothing to do with 'a madness shared by two.'
I was so incredibly disappointed with this film. Thats all I can say. Maybe it wasn't "made" for me (woman here), and guys will like it more. But, ffs, what a let down.
This was a BIG disappointment yea 🤔 it was extremely well done the first time but this sequel yikes 😒 it was all over the place it didn’t make sense it’s musical which is fine but gesssh it was truly off base of the Joker BRAND
Agree completely with everything you said. However I would add the biggest disappointment of all which for me was the ending. It completely shattered my interpretation of the message of the first film and now has left me unable to "go there" when watching the original in the way I used to. I will never enjoy the 2019 Joker (which has always moved me deeply) at the same level again. This film should not have been made.
That’s unfortunate, but yeah once they said it was a musical my hopes dropped. Hearing it’s mainly/mostly in the prison sounds downright stupid when you’re introducing a second primary character. A movie mainly in a prison can work, but a poor idea for a sequel and with these characters. I mean, Joker finds ways to break out of prison all the time. If anything, it could’ve been how he keeps getting caught and breaking out of prison _multiple_ times and how that was part of some kind of plan. It sounds like there’s nothing really specifically “Joker” about this movie, even though it should since the first was just setting him up, and only became such at the end. He should now be in the full swing of things.
What’s interesting is the interview the director gave like 2-3 wks ago. The director was trying to hype the movie and said how Joaquin Phoenix insisted on rewriting the scenes and dialogue THE VERY DAY OF FILMING. He did it many times. He tried to hype the “artistic talent” of Joaquin Phoenix to rewrite the scenes. But anyone could read between the lines. He clearly didn’t like Joaquin insisting on rewrites of the script. And basically setup the premise of “if the story sucks don’t blame me, blame Joaquin.” Now you’re the first I’ve seen to corroborate the story fails badly.
Countless great Joker storylines to choose from, one that would easily blend into the first Joker...and they decide on this? I'll never understand the mishandling of so many possible great films from DC, justice league, the flash, even birds of prey! Criminal what they did to black mask!
Once half of the expected audience for this movie heard that Gaga had been cast in the Joker 2, all interest diminished…. This will be an absolute flop at the box office, Gaga is not a big Movie Star and yet again we have a woman taking over and dumbing down a masculine role. If they were so confident in Gaga’s acting abilities and lead role presence, why did they just not make a Harlequin origin story
Andy, the movie is EXACTLY what the title says it is. "Folie a Deux" means "a madness shared by two". So the movie is Joker: a madness shared by two. He's not real; he's an illusion being propped up by Harley and Arthur in their madness for each other. I liked it a lot more than most people, it seems, probably because I had no expectations about it being a Batman movie about the Joker, but rather more of the first movie, which is what it was. I do think the complete reversal of the Joker/Harley relationship may have gone too far into making her seem out of character. And the potential love child element is completely unnecessary and unresolved. Lee feels underwritten. But is it REALLY as bad as people think it is AS A MOVIE, or are they just angry because it's not the movie they thought it was? (and I'm sympathetic because that's how I feel about La La Land)
Joker 2, along with Deadpool & Wolverine, was my (2) most anticipated movies this year. Sadly, I suppose one had to be a dud. Like Thanos says, perfectly balanced, as all things should be and all.... But no way would i view the first film in a bad light. First Joker flick is LEGENDARY.

The part that furstrated and angered me the most, was no consequences for the guards in the film. You can argue that they deserved to die much more than Murray . These guys were horrific in their treatment of not only Arthur, but the other poor immates. I was waiting and waiting for Brendan Gleeson's character to get karma, but there was nothing. In fact his lastsceen his him walking merrily through the corridor winking at Arthur.
Even before your review I had decided not to see this movie, not even when it's on TV because I think it will ruin the first movie for me. I loved the first movie. Joaquin has said he doesn't think he can keep doing these movies because of the weight-loss required.
A musical with no purpose behind the songs is just a concert. He made up a lot in his head in the 1st movie. The Joker as a character, is a wacky CLOWN killer. With purpose, a big musical number in his head could have worked at least once. But, they got Gaga, and instead of getting her substance she could have made work, they forced her to do a movie concert, lol. And that sucks for her too.
At the end of the movie when Joker and Harley are sitting on the staircase crying, and Harley starts breaking down into song and Joker says “I don’t want to sing anymore” every person in the theater started cheering and clapping.

We wanted to see The Joker, not Arthur. She turned him back into Arthur. Him getting a girlfriend fucked up the movie. Pay attention fellas.
😂😂
Well we found the incel
That Joker drip ran out and so did she.🎶 That's liiife🎶😂 this movie was horrible.
JUST WATCHED IT! This is AWFUL. How did they put this out?
Its like warner bros resented the first one being a smashed hit and went all out to delete this film before it started gaining momentum and become a successful franchise
It's mind boggling why they decided to go in this direction, and the title is awful.
I remember feeling a little disheartened upon learning that the sequel would be a musical. At least I can save my money for more worthwhile things. Thank you, Andy! 🍿
My guess is that Arthur dies and someone else becomes the real JOKER, right?
Yup
Give the man a prize. 👏
Yeah...he gets shanked to death by another crazy inmate since he fickeled out by not sticking to the joker persona
You didn't guess that. Nice try though.
@@candicedelancey3246 Don't cry.
How did this get past the test screenings?
You think they are just going to pull the plug on a 200m film. Use your common sense
Gaga
@@Aubreysangel666 I'm not saying scrap the whole thing. But could they not fix what didn't do well in test screenings? That's what I'm trying to say.
@@DornishQueen i see your point now
To anyone who's thinking that the ending is good,
The Joker who puts on his makeup and suit, kills people, many people in his universe was considering him the prince of crime and every one was calling him the joker then turning up after 5 years from the first movie not being The Real Joker or being A Joker who inspires another one is just way bad, It's just like making a Batman trilogy with a guy wearing a batsuit, beating thugs at night, facing batman's villains then making an ending at the end of the 3rd of the trilogy hinting that this guy wasn't batman.
Too long didn't read
@@TrueNorthMediaProductions TL;DR I like the movie, I like the music the way it is. I understand the message and Arthur’s journey. Don’t know why people thought this Joker is trying to be the real deal Joker when it has always been just an Elseworld story and shouldn’t be taken too seriously
As soon as they announced it was a musical, i knew it was gonna suck.
I think Phoenix would only come back if it was 'unique' and 'artsy'.
it was a total tease. the first 40 min wasn't terrible but the ending is where they stab you in the heart with "how dare you like this character. now take this losers"
When Joker said "its Jokin time!" I cried for 20 minutes!!! Pure cinema!!!! Todd Philips is the Stanley Kubrick of our generation!!!!!
Should have been called Joker.... Oh mon Dieu!
I don’t think the people behind the production of the movie had the intention of making an actual “Joker” movie. Instead they used the massive popularity of the genre and the character as a Trojan horse to make their own social commentary film. Clever but that’s bullshit
I completely agree, this is how I felt.
It's like they purposely dismantled and undermined the character the first movie created so well. It's like they were trying to send a message "If you think The Joker is a cool character and are considering his brand of anarchy yourself, THIS is what will REALLY happen to you" to discourage serial killing.
Apparently we werent supposed to like Arthur in the first movie and thats why Todd went out of his way to make Arthur look awful in the second movie
It looks bad
did anyone expect this to be good? I was surprised with the 1st one, I thought the ads for it looked terrible, but I ended up really enjoying the film. but wen they said musical for part 2two. that jus seemed so far from the original. I mean, I might watch this, if I remember to. maybe. who knos. I thought I wudnt like the first one. u never kno.
@@CurtisJeffries-cd5vuBelieve it or not I saw some people saying this would be a 2 billion+ dollar hit lmao
@mightguy3118 well, I jus read the ending and it made me angry. apparently Joker gets shanked to def n prison n the end. n his kller is the new joker to take his place. it ain't worth watching after I read that. fk this movie.
I don’t think Todd Phillips understood The Joker character.
Warner Bros DC needs to give DC characters to directors who understand them and not like this dumb ass Todd Phillips
He totally blew it. His movie was ugly
Not only was the movie disappointing, but the title was completely midleading. Halfway through the movie it's revealed that Harley Quinn isn't mentally insane; she checked herself in/out voluntarily for sport. The movie has nothing to do with 'a madness shared by two.'
The moment I saw gaga was in it I knew it was gonna be terrible.. then I found out it was a musical.. what a damn shame!
Lady gaga ruined the film
I was so incredibly disappointed with this film. Thats all I can say. Maybe it wasn't "made" for me (woman here), and guys will like it more. But, ffs, what a let down.
Breaks my heart. Could have been something truly s😊pecial
The acting was great!!!
Story itself was a massive let down.
I thought it was an odd choice for Arthur to start serenading Tainted Love during a courtroom scene.
Tainted Conception lol
Do not see this movie it’s complete garbage just got back utterly disappointed
This was a BIG disappointment yea 🤔 it was extremely well done the first time but this sequel yikes 😒 it was all over the place it didn’t make sense it’s musical which is fine but gesssh it was truly off base of the Joker BRAND
We all knew he wasn’t the real one but They should’ve at least let him go out on top or fighting like Scarface
We left the theatre depressed.
Me too!!! Wanted to forget that pile of 💩
Same I wanted to cry after watching the second movie I was so disappointed
The first movie left me in amazement
Agree completely with everything you said. However I would add the biggest disappointment of all which for me was the ending. It completely shattered my interpretation of the message of the first film and now has left me unable to "go there" when watching the original in the way I used to. I will never enjoy the 2019 Joker (which has always moved me deeply) at the same level again. This film should not have been made.
You read my mind with the "Natural Born Killers" approach, it was my first thought when the sequel was announced.
Well I be saving my money
Mate you couldn't have said it better
After the first movie I was soo excited to see where this was going to go but for me it took a shit on my face 😂
This joker folie a deux is the worst film in 2024, totally cringe worst ever in DC is just musical movie. Not worth it at all wasting money.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the first one either. They need to make a real Joker movie.
Well you clearly don't know what a good movie is so 😊
What’s interesting is the interview the director gave like 2-3 wks ago. And basically setup the premise of “if the story sucks don’t blame me, blame Joaquin.”
Now you’re the first I’ve seen to corroborate the story fails badly.
Gaga probably financed the movie or something else shady is going on. People say she did the writing
They took something beautiful, and crushed it - just because they could.
Joker 2: "I told you our movie would take you places. I never said they were places you wanted to go"
The musical part was ironically not the issue. Not making Arthur the Joker was an absolute slap in the face to Joker fans everywhere
I LOVED the first one and the second one ruined the first one for me. The fact there was a jazz tap number after a serious scene?!?! I didnt believe anyones performance in this movie
Speak No Evil 2 - win
Joker 2 - lose
Gaga mustve been gagging it up cuz they did what i feared once i saw she was in it, turned it into a musical + wanna be shawshank redemption + court drama smh horrible and looking cool smoking aint gonna do it, ok zazie was the best thing in it. Ur right bro, nailed it, they should've went Natural Born Killers w Joker n Harley smh f
Figured this is how it would be. Wasn't fond of the first movie and this sounds far worse.
All those years build up for this has ruined my life it's that bad it's a real joke on the audience
Lady Gaga is an awful actress. She’s NEVER been in a good movie
that doesn't men she's an awful actress, she just has bad taste lol
Totally agree with you. Especially if you’re an actor yourself you can see how bad she is
Thank you Andy you saved me more money mate 😂❤
My batman is from 1989 it is not the same with out Batman and the joker together
Plus it was the only time the Joker was actually funny. Mark Hamill was ok but not funny like Jack Nicholson.
Same here. Keaton is still the best Batman on film. But Ledger’s Joker is better than Nicholson’s portrayal.
Glad some one is atleast not being perturbed by the marketing gimmicks and promotions..
I’m good with the first one and that’s it. Thank you.
The people saying that the problem with the movie is that it's a musical probably haven't watched it or didnt understand what makes it so bad
Even before your review I had decided not to see this movie, not even when it's on TV because I think it will ruin the first movie for me. I loved the first movie. Joaquin has said he doesn't think he can keep doing these movies because of the weight-loss required.
Gaga as Harley is no bueno for me. It's a hard pass for me.
Same
she has a phenomenal performance actually. very underused
SAME
Gaga wasn't the problem.
The movie should have been called Jester. Turning the Joker into a sad sack like Arthur Fleck physically hurt me.
Everybody wanted to see Joaquin Phoenix and Margot Robbie do Joker and Harley Quinn stuff. Not a musical made for lady gaga.
