Learn how to make realistic stones from cheap Dollar Tree foam board. These stones could be used on the exterior of a dollhouse, a stone wall, patio, or chimney.
Transform a cheap battery-operated tea light from the dollar store into a realistic fire pit complete with burned, ashy logs & flickering flames. There are so many tips & tricks to see!
Some of my favorite things:
Double-sided flooring tape

Miter Shears: these are the clippers I use to cut pieces of wood and toothpicks, etc

Dirty Down Rust Effect paint

Oyu Pla/Oyumaru reusable mold putty
amzn.to/44KaaJz
Cheaper, clear mold putty I haven't tried

8 oz bottle of Diamond Glaze

Heat gun: I use mine to quickly dry paint, soften the glue to dismantle furniture, and quickly cure polymer clay without an oven. It gets a lot hotter than a hair dryer.

I’ve never been interested in miniatures, have never made a miniature, and will never make a miniature. Yet somehow RUclips suggested your channel to me and since then I’ve watched every video with bated breath beginning to end. Ah, the mysteries of life.
I feel the same way. Just so enjoyable to know the secrets of your creativity. 😊
You should try it. Alot of fun. Be careful, it's addictive!
Just enjoy watching too 😊
You are being drug into our wonderful world of minis. Its a great journey. 😊
It looks so realistic! I love the burnt wood and flickering tea light. 😍
Bread slices, fruit loops! 😂 you crack me up! The fire is 🔥, looks so good!
I was hungry while I did the voiceover 😆 Everything looked like food to me.
👍💯💙....Fantastic results!! Some people have "talent"...you have "beyond-talent"....😊
Thank you so much 😀
What I love the most about your video how to's is the attention to the details. Well done.
Thank you very much! I try
I was watching one of ypur older videos with my 7 y.o. daughter yesterday and then when we started a newer one she shrieked "O.M.G.!! A Voice Reveal!!!!". SO exciting. I think your choice to do voiceovers was great, I think we all enjoy your humor & the tips you provide so I just wanted to say thanks for taking the leap to add voice.
That is awesome! It takes SO much more time to record and edit voiceover, but it's really appreciated.
She really is so extremely talented. You learn so many things from just watching each episode and then if you watch them again you’ll learn more!
I really appreciate that you use the five color method where all the colors compliment each other. It’s the same method encouraged in oil painting and i’m so happy to see it in miniatures!
Glad it was helpful! I'm not familiar with oil painting techniques, so that was dumb luck.
You are just so amazing ! Your details, makes your miniatures look all the more realistic. You give me such inspiration that I want to make this today ! Thank you ❤ !! I LOOOOVE all your techniques and your teachings.
I watch others making things and I sometimes think to myself "Shyra would have done it this way" 😅
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate that.
Awww, thank you!
I just watched a guy spend hours trying to make bare tree trunks for a display and I'm like, why? Just go get a stick! Then I watched this and there you are, using sticks like a sane person. And simply burning them for authenticity to boot! Now that's what I call slow-roasted goodness.
Haha, true! The real thing makes life easier.
I love how the different colors make the stone look so natural.
Thank you! It seems like a bad idea, but it works so well.
@@queencityminis You have been at this longer than I have. So I trust your instincts. The stonework and the end results look amazing!
This is amazing. I really like your humor.
I appreciate that! Thank you 😊
Little does she know, her ideas make the best pieces for tabletop miniature games......the dungeon master is well pleased!
😎
I love that people are using my techniques to make items for tabletop games. I don't play those types of games, but I do watch Black Magic Craft.
Another way to make flames is to squeeze out flame shapes of hot glue on a silicone mat (or a piece of hard plastic) and color them with alcohol inks when they're cooled. (Stick the whole thing in the freezer for a few minutes to speed the cooling process.) I drop just a tiny drip of ink on the glue and then quickly wipe it with a torn piece of paper towel or napkin - the torn edge helps to feather the ink. To attach them just add a little more hot glue to the bottom edge and press in place.
Your firepit turned out great! Can't wait to see where it ends up.
Great tips! Thank you
I’ve seen this done before on a Doll channel for 🎉1:6 scale dolls.
That looks amazing! I love that you use simple items we probably all have lying around!
Yes! Thank you! That's kind of my thing
I only remember to upvote videos when something funny or interesting happens. Throughout your videos, I keep twitching toward the thumbs up button, only to find I've already pushed it lol
Love your humor and the video content, thanks for sharing!
I appreciate that! Thanks for sharing. How cool
Really inventive! Thank you.
‘….this is just dollar tree foam on a tea light, so it’s not that serious…’ The humor just gets me. ❤️
I call it like I see it 😆
Very clever! It looked realistic!
Thank you! 😊
You missed the opportunity to say "All over the flocking place" 😂😂😂
Damn! Next time 😆
I think you’re reaching a new level of realism with inexpensive materials. This is so inspiring for me, I have many large fireplaces in my future and I see many things that will help me with making them more realistic. Thank you, as always, for sharing your work and making the mini world a great place ❤❤❤ xx
Wow, thank you! I hope you have a lot of fun :)
Another great vid and learned something again! I always check out Poundland (here in UK) and the larger stores/supermarkets for 'out of season' fairy and tea lights which is especially good when starting out. Hope to progress onto wiring my own lighting set ups in the future. Tea lights certainly help enhance miniature structures that would otherwise be somewhat lifeless; if ya get me drift?! I used one in a Celtic roundhouse I made (apart ffrom the tea light, all from scratch) and it really looks like someone's home!
Thanks again for sharing! ❤
Thank you 😊
Poundland sounds awesome! If I visit the UK, I'll need to stop in.
I absolutely LOVE this. I'm going to make it for my son. Thank you for such an amazing video. 🥰
You’re welcome 😊 he'll love it
My husband is a worry wart. Im not able to have a real firepit.😪
He can't stop me from making this. 😁
My dollhouse will literally be a mix of all the dreams, poopood on.😅😂
I love that for you! Live your tiny dreams.
I don't do miniatures, but landed on your channel and love watching you work...also your dry humor is wonderful.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching
I learned the hard way about adding glue to flocking too 😂
I still randomly forget about squeezing the air out of the glue bottle 😆
Let's be real: I often still forget 😆
Hello I really like your work and your Chanel.

You are welcome. Not really.
I have also a nice Chanel. 🤗🤗👍
Your videos are always so creative and informative! And your commentary cracks me up every time!
I'm so glad! Thank you 😊
Love the fire pit! I really like the way the flames look.
Me too! They look really cheesy when you're holding them in your hand, but look great in place.
Diffidently gonna make something like that.
Have fun!
@@queencityminis Thanks.
This turned out really well! I've been looking everywhere for these types of flickering tealights but haven't been lucky to spot any near me! Would love to try making this someday!
Awesome! Thank you! I hope you find one.
I love the added toilet paper for texture, seems like such a no brainer technique and I've never thought to do that, I guess that says a lot about my brain! lol. Awesome result! Thank you!
Haha glad it was helpful! It makes it a lot easier to paint as well.
That was amazing. The fire looked so real.
Thank you 😊
Sweetie you never cease to amaze me!!! AhhhhhhhMAZING work!! ❤
Thank you so much!!
Great 👍👍
Thanks for the visit!
Yaaay a new Queen City minis video!!! “It’s not that serious” is a great attitude towards making art and having fun ❤
Absolutely! Early on, I'd stress when making minis. Little Gretchen's Workshop helped me realize I needed to chill the eff out.
@@queencityminis omg yes!!! She’s so soothing it’s like self care for me to listen to her saying it’s ok to mess up. The mother we all wish we had.
As always, this is so brilliant. Also I almost peed myself laughing when you said „if it looks like FrootLoops you‘re on the right track“ because literally the second before I was thinking „hmmm, looks like FrootLoops“ 😂😂😂
Hahaha I love that!
I saw the well with a skeleton down in it, prior to Halloween..made it with clay and distresses, but love the embossing of foam. Cant wait to try it on flooring or walls next Halloween project. THANKS for going slow and being thorough!
That sounds great! You're welcome
Such a wonderful creation! Absolutely ingenious!
Thank you very much!
I absolutely love the painstaking detail of the logs. Your artistry inspires me😊.
I'm so glad! Thank you
I'm adding a cauldron to my witches diorama and was trying to figure out how make it look on fire. This really helps. Btw, I made most of it from dt. I also live in Mass. Love your videos and learn so much from you. Thank You!!
Glad I could help!
Make sure you make a trip to Amherst, NH, to check out Earth & Tree Miniatures. It's the best dollhouse store ever!
I've definitely blown flocking around with "glue air" 🤣😂
That's what I do most of the time. Glad I remembered for once lol
That turned out really great!! That’s amazing how you can make things looks so authentic. I’m ready to toast marshmallows! ☺️
Thanks so much! 🔥
Your creativity is endless! Such realism! I can’t wait to show my grandson!
Thank you so much! I hope he enjoys it
This is a fabulous fire-it with fiery forked flames and firewood! Your wonderful dry humor is always the highlight of my day, thank you for always making me both smart and smiley!
Glad you enjoyed it!
We had a bad storm a couple of months ago here and my daughter lives in a rental house and half the tree came down. They still haven’t been out there to clean it up. Point being I went out there and took a whole bunch of twigs and small limbs for future use in crafting. This is super cute and I love it! Definitely going to have to give it a try. Love your work. You are incredibly talented.
That's awesome! Please do
I admire your work! Where did you learn all those techniques?
I was wondering: what will you do when the battery of the light wears out?
The batteries of these can be changed. You'll need a tiny precision screwdriver to open the chamber and you can order a new set of the button batteries using the code etched onto the battery.
At the end of the video, she shows how she left the bottom open just for that purpose.👍
Thank you very much! I've seen other people make stones like this. I followed my instincts to make them look more realistic.
The battery is accessible from the bototm.
This turned out brilliantly, I already have a well in my diorama so this would be a great addition as medieval people had to heat water for washing, both themselves and clothing etc, so this is perfect, I just have to work out how they suspend things over fires because I think wooden tripods would burn? I could be wrong however lol!
I do plan to make a fire spit. I was thinking of using two eye pins for the side pieces and probably a third eye pin to hold food.
I made ash and coal by putting baking powder and black acrylic paint together. Let dry on silicone or something else it won’t stick to then break it up. Also hot glue makes great flames and color the light bulb too
Those are great ideas! Thank you
This is so creative, love it. I bet many gamers will be trying this DIY 👍
I hope so! I think it would be great for making terrain. Someone already said they'll use this technique to make a dice tower.
@@queencityminis Oh cool! 👍💯
I just finished a fire place and did my logs the same way.
Love your fire pit!!!
Great minds think alike!
I love this! Now I'll have to make this for my hobbit house yard!
That's adorable!
Looks amazing! I’ll have to remember to try the coloured washes next time i do stones.
Absolutely! It makes a big difference
This is such an adorable fire. I made one a while back for a little Halloween diorama and i sure wish i had seen yours first, mine is nowhere near as awesome. Maybe i can take it apart and start over. Your talent and personality are awesome. Thanks
If you're able to, find another tea light so you can have both. I really enjoy looking at earlier versions of things I make to see my progress.
Omg the ‘bits box’, you’re so creative how do you ever throw anything away?!😊
I don't lol
The firepit looks fantastic, and I love how you made the fire!
Thank you!
I loved this beautiful little fire pit 🔥 and I laughed when you said it took all your restraint to put only that much moss on 😂😊
It's so satisfying. I only mixed up a small amount or I would've gone overboard.
I do wish Dollar Tree or some of the other dollar stores would carry miniatures like Temu.😊👏💚
Dollar Tree has the cheap wooden furniture
wonderful you could use it for so many things the film the ring come's to mind.
Yikes! Scary 😆
Very good! It looks real! Have a wonderful Memorial day.
Thank you! You too!
Definitely doing this for the roof top garden of my current doll house.
How cute! Have fun
Great video, your flame technique looked fantastic. BTW I have used your brick strip method to clad my two-foot-tall playable medieval tower with stone bricks. Instead of newspaper and egg carton, I used thin but tough un-dyed cardstock and Readi-Board, with Weld Bond for glue. It worked perfectly, and I am in your debt for saving me many days of individual brick laying.
That's fantastic! I can't even imagine how long it would've taken to cover a 2 foot tall tower. I love your innovative materials! Great job 👏
@@queencityminis Well it took me 4 days, but would have taken ten days or more if laid individually.
Waiting for you to use this fire pit in any of your magnificent project
I don't have a plan for this, so we'll see!
🎉I was wondering if you could show us newbies how to scale down to 1/24 . I've got myself this lovely old house( profile pic) I want to make my own furniture with lots of help from my julie warren books . Do you have any tips to help x please xx
Bentley House Minis has a great video about Dollhouse scale!
@@queencityminis I will go look thanks x
As always, amazing work and attention to detail!💗
Thank you so much!
Oh my gosh this is so cute. Your talent is amazing.
Thank you 😊
Love this! 😊🕊️
So glad! Thank you 😊
My goodness that came out so beautiful. ❤
Thank you 😊
Wow!!! Just like ours at camp! 🌸💮🏵
How cute!
May I post this video to my Pinterest board? It will link directly to your video and I don't claim any credit for any part of the video.😊
Sure! Thank you
@@queencityministhank you ❤😊
What an awesome firepit! It's definitely giving me inspiration for the firepit I need to make for my dollhouse.
Go for it! Someone suggested using this technique to make a wishing well too.
@@queencityminis Oh my gosh yes! I can see it now with a cute little roof over it and a bucket hanging on a rope
So amazing!! I love your crafts!!😍
I build miniature houses with recycled materials on my channel, I would be happy to know what you think about them🌸❤️
Ok, here you go again with something else I need to add to my to do list Shyra!😂...great job as always!🙌🏾
Please do! I keep you busy
@@queencityminis ..Yes🤣! I have limited time though, about to start a masters program in July.🤦🏾♀️
Pretty cool!
Thank you 😊
Perfect for my Skyrim miniature 🙏🐦❤
I love Skyrim!

I'm considering making a dice tower, so this came just in time. It's just that, now I want to make a tiny fire too!
That's awesome! Have fun
@@queencityminis Thanks, I will!
Awesome! Love how this turned out!
Thank you! 😊
Stone firepit looks so realistic 🥰
Thank you 😊
That's genius 😃. It looks so realistic. Where are you going to put it?
I want to thank you for your brilliant videos and soothing voice. I was feeling a little bit stressed a week ot so ago. I binge watched some of your videos and I felt a lot better afterwards. I've been checking your channel for the last few days to see if a new video had been made. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much 😀 I normally post every single week, but I had to skip a week and I've been posting shorter videos. I'm busy moving.
As for where I'll put it, I have no plans for it. I just wanted to try this out. I've seen a fire pit tea light before, but it was very simple.
@@queencityminisaw good luck with the move! I hope you don't mind me saying this, but I saw a video of someone making a kit of a 'cat cafe garden' and all I kept thinking was "Shyra would make this look so nice" 😄. I would love to see you make one 😊
This turned out fabulous!
Thank you 😊
👏👏👏👍👍👍💯💯❤
Great tutorial ❤
Thank you so much!
🎉I love the stone work 🎉😊
Thank you 😊

Thank you, Suse! Welcome 🙏
I'm not a miniaturist but I love, love, love your creativity, humor and especially your skill, attention to detail and your ability to bring your scenes to life with those tiny extras. I do a lot of other crafts and I have learned so many new skills from you that I now apply. I am the recent, very happy owner of my first heat gun and set of 123 blocks. I don't know how I lived (or crafted) without them. I've tried my hand at paint "washes" and popsicle stick floors. I'm getting better with practice! I'm so glad that your videos popped up as a suggestion.
That's awesome! Make sure you try flocking. It's the best.
Love your sense of humor, love your attention to detail, love your inventiveness using everyday items to create a miniature--what's NOT to love about everything you make!? Just sayin'😊❤😊
Thanks so much! I appreciate that 😃
Nice tips again 🌱
Glad you like them!
Wonderful! Very realistic! Thanks! Kathleen 🌸
You are so welcome!
Hyper verisimilitude! (ya, I looked it up- someone already commented "realistic"). This is THE best mini fire EVER!🔥
Glad you like it! I've learned a new word 😆
If you spray the foam-core with rubbing alcohol, enough to just dampen the paper, it will peel off in one sheet. Handy tip I use; unfortunately I cannot remember where I got it, so I cannot give them credit.
Thanks for sharing!
How creative you are. That fire pit turned out beautiful. You didn't embarrass yourself you learn as you go along which makes it fine. lol This could also work really great as a well with a bucket and roof for show. Giving me ideas for sure. Have a terrific day
Thank you so much! Someone suggested making a wishing well.
You crack me up!! 😅. The first log neat and tidy the rest random and you suggested using that technique...love it.
I get a lot of compliments about how patient I am, but it's all undeserved 😆
on one of your tubes, you mentioned the matt you were using wasn't matt enough. Add a bit of baby powder ( talc) to your paint to make any paint or sealer matt. Cornstarch baby powder works too. love your channel
Great tip! Thank yoh
It looks GREAT but dang it girl, now you've got me craving Fruit Loops! 🤪
Oops! My bad 😆
I got free dental tools from the hygienist that cleans my teeth. They come clean and work really well to get into tight spaces. They are also super sharp still so you can use them for anything you want really. You could try asking your hygienist and see if you can get some free tools for yourself. I still love your little fire and just might use my little light the same way. 🤗🇨🇦
Great tip! Thank you
Your creativity and skill always astonishes me. Great job!
Thank you very much!
Looks so good!!
Thank you so much!
AWESOME job. Lol I'm sure I heard you call one of the top stones bread😊
You are correct 🍞
Amazing job. Love all the techniques.
Thanks so much!
Beautiful!❤
Thank you! 😊
This is so cool, i have been looking for a technique to add stones to the outside of my dolls house and this may be the winner. Seriously this little stone fire looks so realistic
I definitely suggest it! I recommend trimming the foam core to fit on the house, holding it temporarily with tape, tracing the stones where the corners meet, but doing most of the shaping with the foam board detached. It's a lot easier to work on a tabletop vs vertical walls.
I think this is the best tutorial I've seen for a realistic miniature fire pit. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much!
