If you own this lens share some photos you've taken with it!! It's such a crazy little dude. Even though it isn't perfect, it's still super fun and handy to have. And cheap. Did I mention cheap?
Did you ever respond to anyone mentioning the 8mm fisheye? Seems like that's the one to get(I know I considered getting one before getting the c-mount Computar, Pentax & Rainbow 4.8mm f1.8 UWA lenses) but something about this one reminds me of photos taken with a disposable camera so the fact that you could make a movie like that is AWESOME to me.
ivanj05 yep, I've got one (and their fisheye) and it goes on my GM1 and is a bit of fun. I can't be bothered with worrying about sharp edges and vignetting! It's just a hoot to play with.
This and the 9mm fish eye can easily become the lenses I use most. I really like the look of these photos. Then, there are also the "serious" pictures to be taken... but the body cap lenses are great for experimenting and artistic fun, they make my camera feel like a fixed focus compact camera from the 90s and since one of these back then was my first camera, it makes me feel like in that time again. Of course you can get the same results with post processing, but it is much more fun if the result comes out of cam directly. As said before, I think these are mainly for experimenting and fun and I think they are also a nice variation compared the the many pictures which are flawless and super-sharp and super-glossy.
OMG, I love that one, and I don't care what anyone says about shooting at high ISO with the thing... I've made some cool night shots that look a bit like my old 110 and 35mm film shots. Just have to watch my fingers because of the super wide FOV.
I splashed out the extra tenner or so for the Oly 9mm f8 fisheye. It' not bad, for the money it does what it says on the box. I've only really used in when i was in Uganda at the turn of the year and I used it almost exclusively on the GM5- tiny lens on a tiny camera :) I think I uploaded about five photos on my little corner of flickr.
I'd say the best use of this lens if when you use artistic filters and just to have fun and not expect the perfect image :) Bit like the fisheye bodycap lens they are both classed as 'toy lenses' so as mentioned the use of artistic filters and fun definitely spring to mind :)
Take it out for dusk/night urban shooting where you have high contrast from bright lights and get motion blur, out of focus, story telling shots. Your examples are to "serious" if I can use the term loosely. It's a fun lens not a serious one. Try less serious shots and let the lens guide you to it's sweet spot. Also for as unsharp as this lens is, the 9mm fisheye is surprisingly sharp for a crappy little lens.
The lens is soft so I use it for my 1:1 Hasselblad style street photos. Besides, the softness of the image makes it perfect for the Grainy Film art style from my Olympus bodies (E-M5, E-P5). If you want to produce a modern photo, this lens would be completely falling behind. But if you want to capture artistic photos, with the 1:1 ratio, softness of the photos and grains like those 1950s photos, this is the perfect lens for it.
What these bodycap lenses are great for is super fast snapshots. Because it has a fixed focus, there is *no* lag between pressing the shutter and taking the picture. So it's great for getting the "decisive moment" in street photos, or playing kids, or sports, or animals. I'll gladly take a little vignetting and soft edges and have a picture, instead of not having the picture because the AF took too long. (Granted, I still use the E-M10 Mark 1, newer cameras probably all have better AF by now) But for landscapes, portraits etc. when you have all the time in the world, there's no reason to use the bodycap instead of a "real" lens.
When I bought my GX7 for a goofing around camera with older lenses... it came with this lens just as a cover. The dude who owned had no clue how to use it and never did. I have since figured it out and actually having some luck but the settings have to be very specific on my camera I found. Definitely a basic having fun lens.
It could be the case that your particular lens has a problem. I have one of these and it is very sharp across the whole image as long as you've focused correctly, which isn't as simple as you'd think. Also, its infinity mark isn't very accurate, there's a point just before the lens cover starts to close where it is better for background/distant focus. While it is quite an odd little lens and maybe not so useful for photography, it's a surprisingly good lens for certain video work, especially locked off vloggy type stuff and interview work. Paired up with the smallest MFT camera, the E1, it actually beats any action camera for doing any type of outdoor close dialogue to camera stuff where you've got good light. This is where it's fixed aperture actually becomes a help, especially if you've pre-marked critical focus points, as your focal area won't change as it would with a variable aperture, very much the same as an action camera. Although this obviously means using the shutter and gain/ISO to expose. Considering you can pick these up new for about £40, they're not only excellent value for money but also great for certain video applications. Cheers, Dave.
You know if you shoot in square format and vignette heavy in post. Maybe even throw in some light leak effects and grain. The images might look like the Artist favorite plastic camera the Holga 120n.
I actually love this lens for the pros you mentioned. I need to take it out more, but the few pictures I took, I really liked. It's really great when bracketing art filters on Olympus. Here's a vlog I did at night with some pics. ruclips.net/video/MY0tAC5SPx0/видео.html
Did you ever use a Holga? Lots of people do because they deliver an image that you can't get straight out of camera any other way. Not every photo need to be sharp all over, in fact lots of people apply blur in post processing. If it helps just think of it as a body cap you can take pictures with....try that with a regular body cap! By the way, it is possible to focus with the little slider. Did you try that? When you do you might be surprised how sharp it is....in the center.
I have both the Olympus 15mm and 9mm body cap lenses. The 15mm is junk as you say. The 9mm on the other hand, is remarkably good with acceptable edge to edge sharpness and a fairly wide field of view to boot. I use it with the minuscule Panasonic Lumix GM5 and it literally disappears in my pocket. It makes for a great little setup. I’m just now dipping my toe into the micro 4/3 world and these are the only two lenses I currently own in this format. I’m a full frame DSLR user 99% of the time, but am seriously considering the Olympus Pen F in the near future. Anyway, thank you for your videos.
I have got one and I get great shots it just uses the shutter speed only but I use panersonic G80 and I get great shots on my Olympus fisheye and it was amazing to use!
I’ve loved and hated this lens since it was released. Loved the lo_fi almost disposable camera-like plastic lens aesthetic. Hated that I ruined many shots with the finicky focusing system. I put it away for many years along with my m 4/3 cameras only to dig them all out again recently and have been having tons of fun with this lens now with all the great film simulations out there.
This was a great review. I got this lens as a throw in when I bought my camera. Have I gotten a great picture with it? Probably not, but there is something that makes it fun to use. By the way, I really like the Canon FD 100mm, mine is almost too sharp for people pictures. I subscribed immediately.
Sorry, I forgot to post you a link to an example. Here's one of my unlisted preliminary test videos on my test channel. ruclips.net/video/aGwUspnPDOQ/видео.html This was an initial test of the BCL-15 and a bog standard Lumix 14-42 kit lens that I shot a few days ago, mostly down at the Pier Head. Most of the wide shots are the BCL. There's a clip in the middle where I'm doing a wireless lav test, this is the BCL-15. As you'll see, there's no drop off in focus across the frame, more noticeable on the infinity focused wides and also no vignetting anywhere. If you rip/download the UHD stream and watch it on a UHD/4K TV, you'll probably see that this lens isn't quite as bad as what you've experienced with yours. I mostly deal with audio/mics on my main channel www.DavidHarry.com but will be doing some MFT videos about the E1 soon, check it out in a few weeks as you may find that camera quite interesting. @@MicroFourNerds oh yeah! Thank you so much for replying. Yeah I was looking at the Lumix pancake, maybe I'll invest. Thank you ♥️ it would be bright but I get such a clear look at the moment I don't want to sacrifice that 🤔
Great educational video . I just bought one , great for travel . Love your accent . Manchester ? United or city ? I'm from Yorkshire but I still like your video .
Used to be a huge united fan when I was younger. Had the posters and the uniforms and everything! I played for Burnley under 16s for a bit. So much fun.
The fisheye body cap lens is more fun. I’ve got a really good tip from another RUclips channel (blunty): Switch to the art filter mode of your camera and just point and shoot. It’s a body cap, not a lens ;).
I think the body cap lenses are more of the "toy lenses" for micro 4/3s. it's not designed for perfection or production value, but more creativity for the photographer. I have the SLR Magic pinhole lens for my Pen Mini 1 (E-PM1), and it's such a great little play around lens. I would be interested in both the 15mm and the 9mm fisheye BCL lenses along with other cheap toy lenses.
I've never seen a camera reviewer struggle harder not to wet themselves laughing. They should have just made it focus-free (i.e. set up for hyperfocal distance) and left it at that. Even my (half-frame, film-era) Olympus-Pen EE-2 does better.
I got both the 9mm and 15mm bodycaps bundled with an E-M5 body, and a couple of other things. My aim was to purchase the body and recoup the price by selling the rest of the bundle. I had barely the time to test the 9mm and to discover it was actually nice that someone bought it from me while I was pondering of pulling down the advert I had in the classifieds. Oh well. Anyway. But the 15mm I had plenty of time to play with, but it's just a miserable lens. For a little more than twice the price you can get the P14mm/2.5 which is actually a real lens, with variable aperture and AF, and a pancake form factor that's barely bigger than the bodycap. Finally, some poor soul bought it. Lord have mercy on my soul for passing it on someone else. Whatever the price you paid for yours, believe me, you were scammed by the seller. He preyed on you in a time of weakness to clean his inventory. This is a lens you should be giving money with to offload.
Manuel Viet I read your comment when i was walking round a supermarket and "miserable lens" just absolutely made me laugh out loud. That is the perfect description!
Good educational video. Love your northern accent. I'm considering buying one for travel . Your from Lancashire. I'm from Canada but I was born in Yorkshire. Still friends...?
Love the lens snobbery. I can't even get a sharp image corner to corner with any lens. In my 3d world some things are in focus and some are not. Most of my images never go to print and I don't view them all at 100% all the time to check lens performance. I'm happy with how they look at PC resolution. For those of us who love photography but have little money this lens is fun. As Arthur says, 'isn't fun the best thing to have?' Yes, it's fun to take the pi## but let's not suck the joy out of low cost kit. We can't all afford the good stuff.
It was all meant in jest 😊 fun is absolutely the most important thing! I recently made a video reviewing the Pentax Q. Now that is a fun little camera.
Love your content. I don't know a single person who would expect anything out of a lens you can find for 40 bucks. I'm certain the only reason anyone buys this is because they see the price and just add it to their cart for the f*ck of it.
I bought a Holga 25mm f8.0 lens with what seemed to be very similar properties and performance. It amused me for ohhhh... 15 minutes or so. I put it on a camera body to sell. If I’d kept it I would have sent it to you as a gift. You could have done a ‘shit lens shootout’!
I love this lens, and the 9mm version. Most of the street photos I've taken on my GX7 have been with either one of these www.flickr.com/photos/mellonicoley/albums/72157690986550540
its really just a gimmick lens :D but i have to say, that the 8mm fisheye body cap lense is quite good, you should try that one out =) Also I now switched to a laowa 7.5 f2 :D which is obviously a bit better ;)
Sounds like you're better off just taking pics with your phone, probably similar field of view? Why bother with a dedicated camera if you're essentially shooting with a potato cam?
@@dayeah765caoni3 When I'm shooting on my proper camera, I don't want to be limited to F8. The "gigantic" sensor won't be terribly helpful if the lens doesn't let enough light in.

"Finest plastic made" haha haha.. hearing that, I thought this should be good!
i like the photos this lens produces... reminds me of old kodak pics😅
This intro 🤣🤣🤣
Good educational video. Love your northern accent. I'm considering buying one for travel . Your from Lancashire. I'm from Canada but I was born in Yorkshire. Still friends...?
"If you like vignettes!" ... who doesn't. LOL
Whuuut??? This is crazy i want it
The 9mm F8 body cap lens seems to get better reviews
Love your content. I don't know a single person who would expect anything out of a lens you can find for 40 bucks. I'm certain the only reason anyone buys this is because they see the price and just add it to their cart for the f*ck of it.
It's not too bad, if you view it as a bodycap that takes pictures rather than a lens. I got this one today out of it: flic.kr/p/2bUGvs6
If I found it in a skip, I'd leave it there.
DREAM清醒夢LUCID 😂 good call haha
If I hadn't seen this I might have fished it out and experimented... now I know better... haha
HAhahahahaa the vignette comment!!!!
Alex Wade haha shit lens shootout. That sounds like fun project!
Jonas Krug I've seen some really good images with the figheye version. I'll have to hunt it out 😁
My lens ended up being a piece of garbage…
@KitJames Cheaply made.
Sounds like you're better off just taking pics with your phone, probably similar field of view? Why bother with a dedicated camera if you're essentially shooting with a potato cam?
Gigantic sensor compared to smartphones? !
@@dayeah765caoni3 When I'm shooting on my proper camera, I don't want to be limited to F8. The "gigantic" sensor won't be terribly helpful if the lens doesn't let enough light in.
