Ok, to clarify a couple of things. 1) This lens is a 'Body Cap Lens' not 'Lens Cap Lens' I mentioned in the video, though did correct myself at the end 😱. 2) Thumbnail doesn't count, only whatever is in the 'video' 👍🏻. You can leave your answer either on the comment section or in our Facebook Page!
Oh I love this lens! It’s one of my most favorite lenses. I love this for street photography if I donˋt care that it’s not as sharp as a pro lens. I use it for „mood shots“. 📸🖤
Thanks Bene. Hope you had a good weekend. It's more a fun little thing than a tool for professional use but it does well in training if some want to get serious about photography.
I have the the 9mm F8 FE bodycap. it is very similar to the 15mm, except much larger and distorted field of view. I bought it as the most low risk way to get a fisheye lens and try it out that way. I loved it but f8 is seriously limiting in the end. I upgraded to the godly 8mm f1.8 FE PRO. My second most used lens with m43.
Oh yes, we love the 8mm 1.8 pro, we used it often too and on the EM1 II, you can 'de-fish' it in camera which makes it quite versatile. We made a review video on this too :)
Giggles - yes I have been impressed by MFT lenses that seemed cheap and frankly rubbish. My workhorses are the Olympus 17mm & 45mm f1.8 and for travel I add my Panasonic 14-140mm but have found bargains to pad out my set. I bought the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 because although its plasticy its kit lens cheap. OMG its sharp and easily one of my best lenses, the 25mm and 45mm are almost as sharp as my Leica TL lenses; I use both for the Zoo as they will easily take a x2 digital crop or more. My biggest surprise was, thanks to a video by Dom Bower, the Panasonic pancake 12-32mm kit lens. I always assumed it would be rubbish, it certainly feels like rubbish but, I bought the GX9 kit with it as the cost was trivial; almost as cheap as your lens cap lens. Gosh what an eye opener, it resolves like a prime and covers 24mm 28mm 35mm and 50mm equivalents. It also provides dual Mega OIS thrown in. This is now my standard zoom for when i feel too lazy for the 17mm and feel like a bit of creativity and nothing else gets a look in for portability and convenience. It is also kept as my 12mm as I cant see me ever buying a 12mm prime as its not a focal length I use much. It looks as ugly as sin when bought but, with the addition of a cheap Amazon 37mm Leica style lens hood and a 58mm lens cap to bung the front up when in my bag, it looks fantastic. On the camera its reminiscent of my Leica IIIg with a collapsing 50mm Summicron and easily my most versatile lens. It is fantastic the range of lenses we can get for MFT at all price points, we really are spoiled for choice; I dont think you can go far wrong whatever lens you buy for this system ;-)
Yes, I think people are more 'gear-minded' these days than 'photography-minded'. Instead of thinking of how to get better pictures, they think how to buy better cameras/lenses. The truth is, they don't know what is 'better'. There are reasons for various different formats and there are not better or worst, just better to suit a specific job. I love M43 for a reasons, portability and reliability. For what I do, location portrait, documentary, weddings, I can use medium format, full frame, or smaller format. I've used them all and produced similar results, so why on early would I want to shatter my back and shoulder and spend double if not triple for the same shots? M43 delivers both quality and speed that I want without killing my body (and wallet). Enough said ;)
One of the best things on this lens for a beginner is the hyperfocus mark. Not only is f8 a brilliant standard aperture as a beginning point, being conscious of deliberately using depth of field as a practical way of operating a camera, and the usefulness of the hyperfocal point. These days it is so fashionable to concentrate on shallow depth of field, most beginner photographers miss the importance of considering the depth of focus, and by extension, zone focusing. They don't appreciate the depth of field scale on old manual lenses, or on certain Olympus and Lumix lenses, and so do not demand that manufacturers add this to all lenses.
You Europeans are more stylish! No option to get a red version of the lens cap lens over on this side of the pond! Agree with you on the high ISO/grain B&W shots, the look of the pics is definitely reminiscent of the film days. I was wondering about seeing the Olympus names the first time viewing, thought you were utilizing subliminal seduction, being Christmas/Black Friday/Cyber Monday time and all! Cheers and best wishes to you for the holiday season.
Counted 15 of them through the ad for the next video. There was one more but it was white letters on a black background as opposed the one you showed - black letters on white background.
Thanks Bart! Yeah, Charli has moved further away so it's harder for her to come to London hence you don't see her these days. We will do something with her again in the near future but just not yet. Thanks for playing and have a great week.
Huh, this kense really is polarising. Personally, the photos look pretty good. Trying to get my friend into photography with an older Olympus body with this lens on it.
hahaha... well, this is a fun little toy and a tool to train your photography, should you want to master documentary and street photography. IQ is not the best but it's great that it's light and 'restrictive'.
Thanks Dennis! They are Timberland American Craft 8-inch boots, yes, they are over-engineered super heavy, thick-leathered boots that probably will outlast me 😂
I stuck this on E-M5 II and filmed at 1080p 24fps and the image is even on par with the Olympus 17mm 1.8 at f8. So ridiculous and crazy and quite a surprise as well.
Why there is no black version of the 15mm lens cap! Lately I'm tempted by this lens just for fun, together with some b/w filter! It's interesting you and Peter Forsgård did a video for the same lens in a week period.
There's a black version and I am sure you can still get it. Yes, with black and white filter this thing rocks and very 'lo-fi' for that 'quirky photography but I do think it's great for training.
@@Red35Photography I'm in Bulgaria, but I've checked both local and UK Olympus shops, but doesn't matter, silver is also fine for me, just not the red please, you should use the red versions, it's a good match with your name ;)
Yes, I used to 'duck-tape' my old manual lens on a film camera to train my distance and awareness of lights and composition. This really reminds me of that and certainly a tool to get you serious!
Respectfully, I disagree. The BCL 15 is worse than any kit zoom @15/8.0, you're far better off with your kit lens at this range. For about the same price you can have the BCL 9mm f/8.0 which is completely different (being a fisheye wide angle) than anything else and incredibly cheap for a wide angle to boot. But if you seek wide~ish normal, a panasonic pancake 14 f/2.5 2nd won't be that much more expensive than a BCL15, but it will be a true lens, with quick AF and a somewhat acceptable max aperture of 2.5 which is really faster than the kit lens. No, really, I don't see a use case for the BCL15. That's throwing money out of the window.
LOl, I respect your comment though. Mind you, I want to highlight that this can be a useful tool to train. By limiting a few elements to clear one's mind. I used to trained with my photography using duck tape fixing my lens with both aperture and focus distance. This is almost like that. Just an old school way of 'Jedi' training.
@@Red35Photography I'm all in favour of the old saying "f/8 and be there". It's easy to switch your camera to full manual, iso 400, f/8 and 1/60 or 1/100 depending on the weather. It works fine as a learning tool. Using the 14mm prime is perfect for that endeavour. But the IQ of the BCL15 IQ is terrible and you can't do much to improve it while the 14 is a full fledged lens with acceptable quality than can grow with you as a photographer. Meanwhile the BCL will be stuck at the bottom of the learning curve. As a novelty lens with the heavy grain b&w filter, why not. But if you get the shot of a lifetime, there would be no way to get something proper while the same image even with the kit zoom could be improved if you have the raw file as a sidecar. I had the BCL15 for some time (got it as a body cap in a deal) and couldn't be rid of it fast enough.
No thank you! You inspired me to purchase an Olympus OM DE M10 Mark II! I’m fairly new to the mirrorless world so I’m looking forward to learning about more of Olympus’ products! :D
Why waste 100$, just buy used glass , or vintage @red35 -> if you want to do a cheap glass video, go for a vintage lenses test (old Zeiss, the famous radioactive lenses, the russian copies of it, etc.) and compare it to new lenses... would be a nice video
This is the worst lens in the M43 range and the kit lens is a much much better option. Why anyone would invest in this toy lens is beyond me because I think it's that bad. The 9mm fisheye on the other hand has reasonable IQ and at least it gives a fisheye view. I would recommend the Sigma 19mm f/2.8 for a very small amount more and would never recommend this awful lens.
Well, you are right if you are an advance photographer looking for quality. But I would get this to train my students because of its restriction. I was trained by duck-taping my old manual lens on a film camera so I couldn't change settings. This lens isn't for IQ, it's for the 'feel'.
FYI watch it till the end =D you will find out, that it is part of a competion, by which you can win that bodycap lense ;) But, of course, it's outdated in 2021 =D so please, don't try to win it :)

That Olympus subliminal messaging, didn't know that still existed!
I love this review. I have both the 9 and 15mm BCL. They make my E-PM2 truly pocketable.
If they were both falling into a pit and you could only save one, which one would you save and why?

It's like the same lens you got on them old through away cameras.
The 9mm F8 body cap lens seems to get better reviews
Yes, because the 9mm has better IQ but it's less 'usable' because of its fisheye look. This is more of a street lens at 30mm FF equivalent.
The 15mm is not as good as the other body cap lens, the 9mm... I've made some great photos with the 9, even for some paid work
I agree, the 9mm has better IQ and we will review that lens too in the near future.
