    It took me years to get hold of the 17mm f1.8 never regretted my choice. And then I managed to get hold of the 12mm f2 and for me it's fantastic. I had the pro lenses I couldn't handle the weight. I know it's not 17mm but what about the sigma 16mm F1.4

  • @gusng695
    @gusng695 5 лет назад +4

    I have two of the lenses you compared today. Only instead of the 17mm f/1.2 which I don't have, its brother 45mm f/1.2 and the 30mm f/1.4 from Sigma are the substitutions. I totally agree your points about them. In my experience too, the significant and the most important difference between these lenses are in the low light focusing performance. The series of f/1.2 or f/1.4 from Sigma are really strong in this aspect. They were tested in an environment where nearly had NO LIGHT at all, but they could still focus the subject immediately. Besides this, of course, the output quality of these two series are another world level, especially the M. Zuiko f/1.2's.

    Weather sealing is great, the 1.8 did alright in -40c weather but would fog inside when getting in a warm place, the 12-40 pro had no issue. But the 17/1.8 in silver on a silver body em5/2 looks great :D

    Great video again, I love my 17mm 1.8, great for travel and street, but I absolutely adore the 17mm 1.2, it's a completely different lens. The character of the lens and this 3D pop are great and this is the most valuable for me!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 лет назад +3

      Yes Anastas, I use both and love both for different purposes as mentioned. I use the 17mm 1.2 for all my pro shoots because I can't bare the thought of breakdowns so I take the pro lenses out basically religiously. Not that the 1.8 isn't unreliable but even that 0.01% chance...

    Thank you for the comparion Jimmy. You have taken some wonderful and sharp/contrasty/clean looking pics with the 1.8. Unless you are shooting in low light or poor conditions a lot then I think the size/weight and price difference in getting the 1.2 is too high a cost, as wonderful as that lens is .. but feel free to treat me for Christmas! Happy Christmas Rich.

    Thanks for this comparison. Was considering tooling up with the cheaper primes, but I already have the 12-40, and that'll do for now. Mind you, I've found it get pretty cranky in low light, so I'm going to have to address this eventually. Think I'll just use the 12-40 to see which range I get most use out of first.

    Well yes and no; as you are an Olympus embassador this could be embarassing but, you know I love your videos but, I have to have integrity as a consultant. Your assessment of the 17mm f1.8 as the best street lens is spot on. My favourite ever street combo is the Panasonic GX9 with the Olympus 17mm f1.8. I assume the PenF with this lens will be similar. My two Leica 23mm APS lenses are optically superior (also 5 times the cost) but when i go out its the Pani/Oly combo I always grab. All the Olympus Premium f1.8 lenses are stunning. These are the best lenses Olympus makes by a mile. These are the reason I shoot MFT. I just dont get Olympus Pro lenses. No they arent optically superior; unless that is you use them in the range they have been optimised to fill; wide open at f1.2, though why anybody would want shallow DoF on a wide angle lens is beyond me. People need to stop assessing lenses on sharpness, its a totally overrated property that can even be added in post, the best lenses are not that sharp, and is the reason for the downfall of these lenses. Image fidelity cannot be added in post. People need to stop zooming in to pixels and look at the whole image. The best lenses are very simple designs, points at the 7 element leica Noctilux, and the modern equivalents of the classics, think Zeiss, Voightlander and yes these Olympus Premium lenses; simple designs with great glass and modern coatings. Anything with more than 14 elements is a poor design and this Pro lens has 15; others in the range have 20!!! What can I say about the Pro lenses? Like the Irish say, I can see where you are going but, I wouldnt start here. If i didnt mind large lenses and bodies I wouldnt even consider Olympus; I would be buying Sony A7 or Fuji X. I buy MFT because it has the best performance in a compact light format; its unbeatable. I hope Olympus come to their senses soon and see who their real customers are; I see from the annual financial results that their concentration on Pro equipment has knocked them back a bit. Now they have got this out of their system and fleshed out their range, we need them to make us new equipment; weathersealed premium lenses for a start and new 20MP sensors in the Pen and OM-D series. These are the Olympus products we love and want to buy. At least they havent caught a cold like Canon and Nikon - winks

    • @FrankNeulichedl
      @FrankNeulichedl 5 лет назад +3

      Vici Martynov I Ärger with you mostly, but Olympus just killed the PEN line because it didn‘t sell enough. I think the time of small, affordable Camera gear is over. There seem to be mostly two camps of photography enthusiasts... the ones who don’t care about size and want the least compromises (the new full frame cameras fit those well), and the “lifestyle” focused ones... which care either for size, style, colors ... I’m sure you already have camera brands in mind that fit that monikers. All this is a simplification, but I think Olympus is still trying to play in both fields and that’s a stretch for a smallish company.

    • @vicibox
      @vicibox 5 лет назад +3

      @@FrankNeulichedl Panasonic wouldnt agree with you, they continue to bring out small models as well as large and their CSC market grew by over 4% last year along with Fuji unlike the substantial loss Olympus made. People are not buying large cameras and that has been clear for some time. Nobody is buying the new Canon or Nikon models who's profit actually dropped markedly over christmass!!! Canon has warned that it expects its market to halve. Olympus need to return to its roots, it has just lost its way a bit. This has been the worst year in photographic history this century, so bad that Photokina 2019 has already been cancelled; so the fact that APS and MFT small cameras continues to sell well says everything. The PenF should have a new shutter and sensor without filter, its currently an antique. Reason? They have been making these huge chunky Pro models that only a few Pros will want to buy. The mass market is bread and butter and they have taken their eye off the ball. I hope we see new products soon. My opinion I know, but for the last 3 years my predictions have been spot on and based on nothing more than looking at the sales trends; this is the one indicator that you cant fudge, people are either buying or they are not. There is no point telling me something is better or more desireable, if people arent buying it, its a failure ;-)

    • @vicibox
      @vicibox 5 лет назад +2

      P.S. in distinction to the 4% increase in the CSC market last year the large camera market dropped overall by 14% and the Asian market collapsed. Only companies listening to the customer are Panasonic, Fuji and Sony. Nobody is buying FF cameras except Sony. The new Panasonic FF is not a serious camera; its a new line of 35mm bodies which I am certain are destined for 8K video which MFT cant provide. Panasonic promised they would film the 2020 Olympics in 8K which will require 46MP sensors. Their bread and butter is MFT.

      Happy Easter Vici! Yes, like most ultra primes these days, they are designed for one purpose, shoot wide open. I use it to make sure my low light AF works. The 1.8 lens is optically flawless, just like the Leica Summicron lenses, simpler, lighter and smaller. I bought Summilux lenses because of that faster 1.4 for low light stuff, which I need. But travel and almost 90% of the time, the less expensive lens is actually a lot better and sharper, both 35mm and 50mm Summicron lenses are sharper than their Summilux counterpart shows :) But for those who shoot in a variety of lighting conditions, they will usually opt for the Summilux or in Olympus terms, the Pro line. I do agree about Olympus comment and don't worry, I've been told that the smaller and lighter premium cameras and lenses are coming soon!

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 лет назад +2

      @@vicibox As a matter of fact, Olympus didn't mind too much about their imaging branch within its empire. They are primarily a medical optic company and makes majority of the profit from there. They actually use their imaging arm for R&D in optic designs and cameras and lenses are kind of their playground and to satisfy their passion in photography. Their recent interviews did say that and reaffirm that they will not exit the camera market and they've been around long enough to understand their niche, which I do admire. They also explain about their X line will stay and continue to push the technological barrier and also emphasise the important of their premium lines like EM5, PEN and all those compact lenses :)

    I am also mostly a prime lens user but there is an aspect not usually mentionned in favor of a WR zoom : avoiding changing lenses in the field in bad weather . This is partly why i also carry a Pany 12-60 f3.5-5.6 (came with my G85) always on at first in the bag with my non weather sealed primes.
    Of course if you take 80% + of your shots with your favorite focal lenght, a WR prime like your f1.2 overcomes that.

    I just ordered the 17mm f1.8. I have got already the 12-40mm, f2.8, but I wanted a small, sharp, light and unremarkable lens for the street photography. The f1.2 is of course a little bit sharper and has got a smoother bokeh, but for my type of use it's too big. And I wanna go out with a prime lense. So I will leave the 12-40 mm at home. I hope i will enjoy it. I will get it in the next few days.

    An important point about the smaller prime lenses, especially for street photographers, is that they don't make you look like a serious photographer. Whereas, the larger size and more expensive look of the PRO series primes or any zoom lens will always grab people's attention. They'll immediately think you're a serious or professional photographer, so you'll attract notice. Potentially, hostile notice. Definitely, more wariness. For this reason alone, this tiny Olympus prime lenses are ideal for helping you to blend in with the crowd. People will assume you're just another tourist, and they'll likely ignore you 😉

    I know that Olympus seems to be putting their efforts into their PRO line. With that in mind I think they should revamp their premium trinity of 17, 25 and 45 mm into small pro lenses like they are doing with the 12 - 45 mm f4. Keep the 1.8, keep the small form factor but make them all metal, focus clutch and 1.8! Just a thought! This is micro 4/3:s!!!!

    I really like the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 because of the times I need a stop faster than the pro lens. For me I would be ok with the 17mm f/1.8 on sale for $350. I'm a bit of a budget photographer but when you add sharpness, bokeh quality and weather sealing a pro photographer could easily justify it. Bulk and f/16 minimum would not be an issue.

    Out of the 3 lenses, I only own the 12-40, of which I tend to shoot between the 12-17mm range the most.
    The 17mm f1.2 is tempting, but I think I'd prefer a 12mm f1.2 (if it existed... only rumors for now) over the 17mm.
    I've considered the 17mm f1.8 in the past, but I already own the Lumix 20mm. A lens I've tried to replace with the 25mm f1.8, but I still prefer the 20mm, slow AF aside. I suspect the 17mm wouldn't replace my 20mm either. The 20mm is just smaller and fits better my GM1 camera. :p

      @Red35Photography  5 лет назад

      hahaha if you are looking at the GM1, then nothing fits better than the 20mm pancake and it's way better than Olympus 17mm 2.8. But in terms of optical performance, I do think the 17mm 1.8 is sharper, especially the edges. Yes I am waiting for the 12mm 1.2 pro hahaha

    • @Seanonyoutube
      @Seanonyoutube 4 года назад

      Yea, a 12mm 1.2 would be a game changer for shooting parties and other low light events in tight spaces. It would have more depth of field with the same amount of light which is actually an advantage when you want more in focus without compromising on quality.

    • @raksh9

      I use the GM1 with the 25/1.8 and it's a dream combination. Even though it's bigger than the Panasonic 14/2.5, the images make it well worth it. I sometimes use the 17/1.8 on the GM1 but I prefer the 25. Even the Olympus 12/2 is great on the GM1. With the 45/1.8, the GM1 becomes a complete kit in two pockets.

    Is this review and others completely biased and you don’t have any connection with Olympus?
