  • Hollyland Tech is not really known for wireless microphones rather they make wireless video transmitters. This is their first attempt at wireless microphones. Bringing some unique ideas, especially with its receiver design, lets see if they can beat out the heavy hitters like the Rode Wireless Go and Saramonic Blink 500 Pro.

Definitely late to the game reviewing this. I think this is a great first entry for Hollyland, especially that Receiver design. I never comment in any channel, but I'd like to thank you because I probably watched all the Lark150 reviews on RUclips, and you are THE ONLY ONE commenting about the clip onto the shirt and how it flops. I think other youtubers tried to hide that problem. I watched your review of the Saramonic b500 pro, and you also mention that they don't flop because the battery is at the bottom. THAT's the reason why I'm buying the Saramonic instead of the Lark150 and also the reason why I'll always trust your reviews. Thank you

@@TLDR_filmmaker Thank you for your kind answer! Actually the RODE would be my first choice, but my channel is kind of little, I'm currently living in China and here the RODE costs 390$ and the Saramonic 250$ I think the price difference is too steep for me. I'd love the Rode but that's too much for a channel with 1k subs😅🤣
Also, I chose the saramonic over the lark because I think the saramonic, although it's really small, I think the receiver is kind of big and I'd would attract more attention.

      Hey hey again Neil!
I saw his video the other day as well and I was curious if he seemed to get the same sounds I was getting. Definitely was similar with that odd EQ and hiss sound. Hollyland did pretty well with their first attempt, but not up to par in sound against the RODE and Saramonic. And now that the RODE GO II is coming to play, it's going to get very interesting where companies go from here!

I really appreciate your reviews! Great objective comparisons while trying to minimize effects of multiple variables. I started researching these style wireless mics a month or two ago and found your channel to be one of my best sources of info. As a newbie to audio, it’s hard to know what system will be best and now the wireless GO II enters the scene. Can’t wait to see your review and comparison with that new system.
One question, the blink 500 pro has an option to have a line level input. For my application, this is useful, but I wonder if the rode wireless GO or GO II or Lark 150 can handle a line level input if I use an attenuator or direct injection box or pad. What would I need to consider to make that work? Is it worth it if the GO II would have better audio quality, range or features? Thanks!

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  3 года назад +1

      Hey hey montiowa!
Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
If you use an attenuator cable, any of those systems will work because you're effectively turning down the output to Mic level. That being said in my 6 tricks RODE GO video when I plugged my phone into the RODE GO1 to play a sound effect, it did work. That being said it would probably still be advisable to use a attenuator cable.
I can't speak on the RODE GO II just yet because I just received it and am beginning my testing phase as well as figuring out how to test everything else that it now offers.
If you need something right this moment. The Blink500 pro is your cheapest option to get everything up and running and more with the included accessories that the RODE GO1 does not come with.
The RODE GO still provides the best overall audio sound that lets you work with it in post production quite well. But comes at a cost on top of the extra lavs or cables you may or may not need.
That's essentially the trade off, the RODE GO II also doesn't come with lavs etc, but with its feature set (assuming it all performs well) it probably will greatly offset the cost of lavs and punch well above its price tier.
Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Thanks for the fast response! I’m sure you will figure out the best way to test and report on the new features of the GO II - you do a nice job and that’s why I like your reviews. In my research, I have learned that audio cables and devices are not all created equally even though they look the same and have the same specs. Quality is important enough to spend a little extra, so maybe I will wait and see how the GO II compares. Any recommendations on attenuators? How would I measure the line level output to make sure I drop the signal far enough to the mic level input?

I can't wait to see your review of the new Rode Wireless Go ❤️
I've been liking my Comica Boom XU setup, but I've noticed it makes my wife's voice sound a little weird. She has a really high pitched voice and the mic seems to distort it a tad.
I have tried the included Comica lav mic, the Rode smartlav+, and the Mic-J 044, and for her I usually use the Mic-J.
Would a more expensive lav mic improve our overall sound or it that controlled by the Comica transmitter/receiver?

    • @TLDR_filmmaker
      @TLDR_filmmaker  3 года назад +1

      Hey hey again Copy Imitation!
I cannot wait either, I am working on acquiring a unit for review!
A more expensive mic does not necessarily mean it will work as each mic all has their own type of characteristic. What you will want to try is to EQ her voice and create a preset for it so that you don't have to repeat it all the time. @Curtis Judd has some great videos on EQ'ing voices as best as you can with the lavs you have. Since your wife as a higher voice, I'd say lower the 8khz freq to start and then raise the 100-250hz to see if you can bring some more fullness into her voice. Hope this helps!

      Hey hey again ShoebillStonk!
Not at this time as the BoomXD is no longer in the running in my recommendations. So I will not be comparing the BoomXD to anything as it has be succeeded by others. As for the G2 system, a friend of mine is about to review it @natesfilmtutorials I would be on the look out for his review as well as others. Really when it comes to these budget 2.4ghz systems, only RODE GO II has advanced the platform, all other companies have not done anything different except for just physical designs. So in terms of distance performance and battery life, they are all nearly the same. However I do know that the G2 sounds better than the BoomXD. Hope this helps somewhat as you look for a budget dual channel system.

      Hey hey Animation Vibes!
Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question!
Unfortunately without knowing how you're going to use the system, I can't really give a suggestion that would be suitable for your needs.
If you're talking straight best bang for the buck against technical stats between the two. The Saramonic sounds the best and while the Lark has the better RX setup for realtime audio soundbars.
However at this current moment in time the RODE GO II is my recommended pick for 2.4ghz dual channel setups. While it may cost a little more, the investment is extreme due to its internal recording feature that ensures you'll never lose audio ever again on a shoot.
I've done a bunch of videos on the RODE GO here:
      RODE GO II: ruclips.net/video/3TOldrv9iEE/видео.html

      RODE GO SETTINGS: ruclips.net/video/dakp_MPQO5Q/видео.html
That being said it is only a matter of time for budget competitors come flocking to try and dethrone the RODE GO II with some cost cutting measures. Stay tuned as I receive them to see how they compare and if they are worth the cost saving measures.

I recently got ahold of the RODE Lav Mics and once I finish my other video obligations I may backtrack and do some lav shoot outs on popular budget wireless audio systems. That being said, after this video, the RODE GO II is my current definitive recommended 2.4ghz dual audio setup of choice. Even without the lav mics, at $299 MSRP it is very hard to beat for what it can do. Its internal recording makes all other competitors at this price point obsolete, in my opinion.

Can you adjust the safety track gain? Seems like -6dB isn't really that much of a "safety", if the noise suddenly becomes really loud you could easily clip that too. Is there any way to change that to -12 or -20dB?
Also not having a usb port for charging individual devices seems like a huge downside. You mentioned they've made the units small but it's not much smaller than Rode's system and those guys have usb and also up to 7 hours of runtime. And it also costs about the same. I really feel like they've kinda screwed up a bit with this one. "Mark 2 needed" is written all over it.
And yeah like others have mentioned newly released Rode Wireless Go 2 is a beast now in this price bracket with all the new features they've added.

No you cannot adjust the safety track, at least I wasn't able to figure out any sort of button combo to make it happen. For me I generally keep the average around -12db when I'm gain staging, so that gives me a decent amount of headroom with the -6db for safety. But I get ya, I'd like a -12db option too on top of it.
I'm testing the RODE GO II right this moment and based on my findings so far... its definitely here to trash everyone else. They did not hold back, they came to play!

I know right? Literally as I finish the video and have uploaded it, I find out last night about the new RØDE GO II! They are not messing around with this 2nd generation and YES the onboard recording! I remember talking about it in my initial review that they should fit a MicroSD card slot. I also love that you can plug it into the computer like the videomic NTG and use as a usb mic! Can't wait to review it!
The Lark150 is definitely a good start for Hollyland. They just need to fix the battery life and possibly update their onboard sound processing or use a better mic capsule, whichever to get rid of the weird throat sound that it seems to have.

The RODE definitely has the cleanest sound overall, mainly because it's tuned to be a more Flat EQ Response out of the box, not a bad thing I'd say. Now that the RODE GO II is released and making its way out there, it's going to be interesting to see how these other companies are going to compete!

Yes, mine does this too as well as my Saramonic Blink500 Pro. It's a bit of a design flaw where it will start charging the TX and RX the moment it detects the voltage dip. They should have put some sort of system in so that it doesn't aimless keep charging the TX and RX all the time, draining the case overtime.

Now just look at the transmitter compared to the receiver, receiver is almost twice the size so it's going to last longer. So they would have to make the Transmitter bigger which to me wouldn't really be bad because they're so small making them bigger I don't think they would be so big that it would be crazy. I've been using wireless mic systems for about three to four years and they don't last very long and yes I can just swap out the battery, but there's times when the transmitter was fine and the receiver went bad first same batteries about the same time on and if you're filming a wedding or speeches during the reception I can't just say hay can you stop I need to replace the batteries (IE I had that actual happen and they where brand new batteries but bad new batteries) I just bought this system I got for $220 on sale. I love the way the receiver like you said works.

      Hey hey Revelation Video Productions!
Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting!
Definitely about the batteries, I feel the Lark150 could have gotten the TX up to the RODE levels of batteries if it was just a tad bigger, though not sure what their circuits are like in there for the mic capsule. For people who want to use the 2.4ghz system, to this day my most recommended mic for events and wedding is the Picomic: ruclips.net/video/pt_goA--zho/видео.html
This video review is older and their newer firmware updates have drastically improved the sound. Aside from Picomic, the RODE GO II is my next recommendation for weddings because of that built in recording and wireless transmission. No way to lose audio, but you'll run into the battery problem again where as the Picomic will easily last the whole day. At the end of the day there still isn't a super perfect solution yet, if Picomic could somehow fit internal recording into their mics, they would kill it. I love use their mics, so fast and easy with clients!

I bought the Lark 150 system after I lost an original Rode Wireless Go transmitter. So far, the Lark 150 works fine for me, solo shooter, short sessions, short distances. The only changes I may make are to use the Rode Lav+ mic with both transmitters, although, outdoors, the built-in with the dead kitten and the lav with a dead kitten work pretty well. Wind muffs knock down the high end response a little, and that is a good thing.

Glad you enjoyed this video! Hmm, I've honestly never really ran into latency problems when using various wired mics going into a recorder... but I guess latency would be a problem if your recorder is using wireless and a wired boom mic and it doesn't not record a separate audio file or stereo split the audio file. Correct? If so, that definitely makes sense and I'll have to set up a test bed for this type of test!
