I got this thing broken for free when I bought another camera, I opened it and changed the aperture cable that breaks on all of these lenses, so in the end I got this for around 5 bucks :)

I've been using this lens for quite a while now, and despite it's flaws, it's a good lens. I'm thinking about replacing it with a 15-85, but if I can I would rather replace it with the gorgeous 17-55!
I had one of these on loan for a couple of years. I found it a very difficult lens to like, although it was almost alright at longer focal lengths. I was unable to get much sharpness at all at the sides of images at wider focal lengths, even when stopped well down, and found the the colour fringing, distortion and vignetting immense at these focal lengths too. To cap it all, the zoom creep was very annoying and it was big and bulky despite its slow aperture and poor performance.
People often talk about the 75-300 as being the worst lens Canon ever made, but frankly it's a gem compared to the example of this I used.
I have one for my Canon Rebel T6S (760D) 24MP. IQ is surprisingly good. My Canon T6S (760D) CAN auto correct for Chromatic Aberation (CA), distortion and vignetting.
(My older Rebel T2i (18MP) however cannot correct for CA).
I did not wait, and I bought a refurb version of the 17-85 for $159, and it is excellent and the IQ is also better than I expected.
I have just seen your flickr photostream and wow, you are an amazing photographer. That makes these videos even better.
excellent video, Chris. I was about to buy one of this to upgrade my kit lens. Thanks to your review, I will hold off and may look for a telephoto lens instead. I think that will better compliment the kit lens that I have.
I'm currently looking into buying this lens. and watched quite a few video reviews. that were more like a joke than an actual review. I should have known to come to your page for a honest review right away rather wasting my time on the others. as per usual wonderful video and thank you for clearing up any questions at all.

I started calling this lens my _King of CA_ because of the massive ammount of CA at 17mm.
I have this lens for some years now and I have to say I never really tried it at 50mm. Currently it is broken (most likely the apature cable), but when it's in good shape again I have to make some images at 50mm.
KuruGDI do you still have that lens? how it perform right now? i have a plan to buy that lens for $130.
@@rofiihamdi65 Yes, I still have the lens. However, it has the problem with the broken apature cable so I am not able to select any apature higher than f/4.
Considering it's price it's probably not a bad quality to money ratio. Considering it's not so great quality overall it's there are maybe better ones.
At wide angles it's not really a good image quality and it shows a lot of CA at high contrast coners. If you want to learn photography this inexpensive lens will do the job. If you want to improve your image quality, this lens is not really the way to go.

Someone at my town sale DSLR Camera Canon 60d with 18-55mm kit lens, 50mm is ii fix lens, 17-85mm is usm, battery grip, and external flash speedlite evo 700e for $370. He say lcd is vignette but picture still good. is that worth to buy?
@@rofiihamdi65 It's an older setup, but it sounds like a good deal if you are new to photography.
Make sure to check the functions of the lenses first before you and over the cash (so mi + man apature, image throgh vrious focal lengths, take pictures to see if there are any scratches in the lens, etc.)
And if everything goes wrong it's not that much of a huge loss.
Iam using it for carphotography (light painting). The lens is very sharp and the focalrange is perfect special for carphotograpy 👍
if you have a newer camera body T6S (760D) or newer, there is in-camera corrections available for
1. Peripheral illumination
2. Chromatic Aberration
3. Distortion
Latest 2022 correction data ifor this lens s available with the latest EOS Utility. Up until 2021, there was no correction data for distorion for THIS lens.
My other (older) camera T2i (550d) could only do
1. Peripheral illumination corrections and nothing more.
Calm down. I needed my 60D to record video in that shot
I remember owning this lens, immediately the ribbon cable failed. I rebuilt it, but it was always a poor quality image...it reminded me of 90's Tamaron junk. Avoid. Buy Sigma, or just stick with the kit lens :(

I still have this lens which I used with my Canon 500D. I now have a Canon R10 and perhaps you should d o a review of it with an R series camera? Great video as always.
i got that one a while back for my xti and bought the canon eos m mount adapter so i can use it with the canon eos m. fun times.

Hello! I am searching for a good lenses with AF and silent motor for filming beauty and makeup videos. I have a canon 700D. I doubt between this the canon 17-85 or the sigma 18-200 or any other. as I prefer a zoom lenses so I can zoom right to my face, eye o lip to show what I am doing.
Which one do you recommend me?

Hi Chris. I wanna ask you a question. If we want to compare Sigma 17-70 and Canon 17-85, which do you think is more useful? Especially about each macro performances.
Check out my review of the Sigma 17-70. I'd say the Sigma will be the better lens in most ways

I've had three of these and they all have broken the aperture cable eventually. Pretty inconvenient but they are easy to come by on eBay.

Hi, is the Canon EF-S 17-85 mm only good for outdoor shots? Because I tried shooting indoors with max ISO and f/4 and 1/15 at min, the shots are still underexposed, so I end up using a 50mm prime lens instead which I find is easier to set for right exposure.
Also, is this lens recommended for photography with moving subjects? Thanks really!
I would recommend the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. Depending on your Camera, the Canon EF-S may not let in enough light for low light situations. Playing around with the ISO can leave you under exposed with extra noise. Better to lengthen your exposure. You can’t beat that Canon 50mm, it’s a fast lens, even better than the Sigma.

They're quite different lenses. I'd go for the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS

How is this for a starter lens? I've been borrowing a friend's DSLR for a few years, and I'm planning on buying one in a few months, but I've been thinking of buying body only and getting a better lens than the stock kit lens that comes with it.

I concur, 17-85 was my first replacement years ago when my kit 18-55 stopped focusing one way. My feeling was mixed, it was my first 300 Eur lens after all and I expected a bit more (especially that CA is striking). But I liked its more universal range over 18-55 and in general was happy. Recently I bought EOS 200D and added 18-135 STM to it - and that one is much better even with way longer range (that 17 vs 18 mm wide end is not that big deal). Yes, it's a bit more pricey, but not that much really. (There is also that nano USM version, again a bit more expensive, I decided for STM version boxed with a hood and I'm very happy.)

hi and thanks for the video, i found this lens for a good occasion price on ebay, it says the autofocus is defect - only manually focus photography possible, do you think would it be anyway worth for me to get the lens? I have a Canon 70D camera with the EF S 18-55 kit lens...other lenses i have are the Canon EF 50mm 1.8, the Canon EF 85mm, and the Canon EF 35-70mm, do you think would this 17-85 add some "up" to my lens acquisitions? Well, if you don't mind manual focus only, then you could get this lens and get rid of the 18-55 and the 35-70

I have three of these lenses. None of them are 'a bit wobbley' none of them suffer from bad colour fringing or vignetting. Perhaps you tested a dud one.
Every other review on the internet confirms what I found here. You're probably confused about which lens it is or how to test image quality (and why would you have three?!)
How does it compare to the 15-85 canon and based on the price difference which one would you use. I will put it on a 60D or the 70D, as I own both.

+Christopher Frost Photography I did not. It was tempting but i decided to save for something bit better. STM is twice as expensive at the moment in Croatia. This is not bad deal for this USM it is 100 punds off.. I use 50 STM mostly and now i need something for wider shots.. Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 is in my reach and i think it will be mine with next pay check..

Hi, I'm a beginner, can you tell me if this lens can shoot cinematic videos?
I managed to get cinematic scenes off of a kit lens before and this is supposed to be an upgrade to a kit lens so yes, you can make cinematic stuff with this with the right compositions.
Tho I would recommend you buy a cheap prime lens like the Yongnuo 50mm 1.8 II if you haven’t already to have a more “cinematic” feel on a budget
Hello I just bought a 28-135 canon to upgrade the standard kit of 18-55 for my canon 700d unfortunately the performance of this lenses is very very disappointed. Recently i realized that this lens is ideal for an old film camera and it is an analog lens. Do you have any recommendation for any good lens in a good price? Thanks

Good afternoon, I wonder if what I heard is true , I heard that this lens spoils " easily " after a lot of focus and then starts giving errors , ( from what I hear is due to a plastic ring inside the lens that after much focus he wears of ) is it true ?
Yes, its already happened to me unfortunately. But keeping in mind I've had this lens for quite a while now and it's pretty great to use

My mother-in-law had one that started failing (after about 7 years of heavy use) and it cost her about £70 to get it repaired
You mention good video but how do you get past the USM sounds? External Mic?
I made this review before the Canon 70D came out, and I don't have the lens to test anymore. An external mix like the Rode VideoMic will help but not totally cut it out, but the microadjustment noises shouldn't really be that bad (I imagine)
Thanks for reply. The motor sounds are extremely loud. Check you tube for some examples. I need to focus manually to film with this lens.

Hello Christopher i need a lens for my 80d, with standard zoom and also fast aperture and sharp image for making video. Tell me which will be a good choice for that kind of lens and also to have a good stills quality. I have 24mm stm but i want something like all in one lens for video and good picture quality. Is the 18-135 nano usm only good choise for my needs?
You want a fast standard zoom lens. Check out the big comparison video I made. The Canon 17-55 IS USM is a good option

No, it's sized for an APS-C sensor, and has an EF-S mount.

It's a DSLR lens so you will need an adaptor

The 17-85 has better build quality, the 18-135mm better zoom range. Go for the new 18-135mm IS 'STM' if you can, as it has improved build quality :-)

Did you buy the lens? What camera(s) do you have?
I like the EF-S 17-85 IS USM. My 24MP 760D (T6S) has corrections even for Chromatic aberations (CA) for this lens and gives very sharp images. Lens did not work as for m 550D (T2I) with no CA corrections and poorer AF because of less focusing points and less sensitive sensor. EF-S 17-85 IS USM works very well with Cheap 67mm +4 +2 and +1 closeup filters singly and in combination so up to +7. +10 filter does not work because of too much distortions. Close-up filters work much better than extension tubes for this lens.
I got it for 5 euro, autofocus doesnt work, but iq is verry good for the price.

@@amamboom9893 YES, it will work on the 550D - BUT newer body like my 760D has in-camera corrections for Chromatic Aberations for this lens but my 550D cannot correct for Chromatic Aberations. Both can correct for distortion and vignetting.
Based on this review, I don't see this lens as worth owning. I'd rather spend the money and get quality glass.
