Hey Hey, I thought it would be super fun to recreate the tone of Nirvana's Territorial Pissings. Hope you guys dig it, I'm excited to dive into Nevermind 🤟🏻
Thanks for pointing that out! This is right, from what I read, my bad! I'll pin this to the top. For what it's worth though I tried my RAT and it sounded about the same.
@@AaronRash Damn, I'll send you my vintage small chorus if you need it haha. Also, this YAMAHA SPX 90 II seems to be key for the come as you are tone, as pointed out by Rick Beato. I have one and I can tell it seems to be a huge part of it: ruclips.net/video/F916ioSWdts/видео.html&ab_channel=RickBeato
Kurt had two strats during the recording, the TOM (broken during Endless) and the K Sticker, the bridge humbucker is unknown on both. It's possible that Kurt only got the Jaguar after the recording, as his guitars were stolen and he needed some. In his journals there's a letter mentioning this. About the Small Clone, it's not the BBD fault, there's a capacitor with a different value n the new ones.
@@mirata7748 The black strat before it become the TOM strat is what I meant, just to be more precise, although I think the pickup remained the same. Forgot that there's was a third unknown guitar, that had been robbed. I suspect It's the one he bought after he broke the "TOM".
@@porradewww ah okay you're right about this, although I'm not aware about another strat you mentioned which got robbed, I'm curious to know what strat it was.
@@mirata7748 Kurt mentioned in the journals that 3 guitars were stolen from him, including the Mosrite. The other is the K Sticker strat, that hasn't been seen after Jabberjaw. The third guitar is unknown.
I don't care what the haters are saying, After that was mixed by some vintage outboard gear of the time, and seated contextually, that tone was fucking spot on man. I have 1,000s of hours engineering, and would be super happy if that was a track I had to work with.
I love these videos! Love the tone! And also, in the Vandalism Strat Kurt used a Seymour Duncan '59 neck in the bridge position, i love the vandalism strat haha The tone is incredible as always
One of my favorite bands Samhain did something similar, a DOD250 straight into the console. Unfortunately I don't know what the console was but I believe the guitar was an Iceman with a Super Distortion in the bridge. Some songs would be entirely this tone and some would just use it as an accent for certain riffs. I really love this type of tone thanks for making this vid!
Those old Neves are sick. I think one of others is at Electric Lady in NY and there's at least one in Nashville. The board at Muscle Shoals is/was a UA.
Dude, it took a lot of balls to show yourself in a fedora. Respect. I too once rocked a Fedora and dammit, I pulled it off well. Plus my girlfriend at the time thought it was hot. 😊
Would have been interested in hearing the difference between the plug in and the real thing. Another great video though, and yeah…I know what you’re talking about, great documentary.
Please please please do Breed! Or at least tell me if it's a rat pedal because lots of people are saying it's a big muff. I know that on lithium the big muff was used and breed sounds nothing like that
Can you tell more about technical aspects, the way you recording a cab, microphone angle etc. Im new to mixing and recording, and for me sound of in Utero album is reference of an perfect record. But in Utero drums thats the part that i can't really recreate, i tried superrior drummer with its 250gb sample library (I dont have real drums), also tryed Steves EZX library which was made in his "Electrical Audio" studio (Alt rock EZX). Guitar tone is not that hard to recreate comparing to the drums and vocals, Albini used 3 microphones at the same time to record Kurts vocals, also one mic in the room. I was listening to stem's and raw multitracks of in Utero and tryed to mix it in my way to make song sound like release. I notice thats the biggest part of the sound, is how it was setup and recorded. So id like to see more deep analysis of that record (Not shure if other people would like it). Also, are you really playing guitar less than 1 year? Damn your skills Is really good, i wasnt able to play like this after a year, even though i was playing 4-7 hours a day like crazy. P.S Sorry for my English, im not native.
I once had an Electro-Harmonix Poly Chorus (your Mr. Flanger) until I didn't take the "overload" indicator light seriously and fried the board. It would cost $200 to replace it and that's how I ended up with a Small Clone. Not nearly as much fun but it did the trick 🤘🏻
Hi Aaron, very good video, I love it (like always lol), I’m so happy you’ll do a the tone recreation for both In Utero and Nevermind. Territorial Pissing is so much accurate, the only things, Kurt used the ProCo Rat for this song but the DS-1 sound so much like it and Kurt didn’t used his Jag (because he didn’t have it when they recorded Nevermind, he bought it after with his Stang, if I’m correct), the guitar he used his one of his two Strat with Humbuckers (either the K one with Angled Humbucker or the black one that he smashed during Endless Nameless, both had unidentified humbuckers) but the Jag with the DS-1 sounds so much like it, it does a lot the job, so good.
Thank you! this is all very useful information. I don't know much about what guitars Kurt was using for Nevermind. You're right about the RAT pedal. I actually tired my RAT at first and found the DS-1 to sound closer so I just stuck to that!
The Jaguar and the Mustang were bought probably a few months apart, most likely after the recording. I think the Rat is a mith for this song, the DS-1 sounds closer. It could have been used for something else in the album though, as Kurt had one in the board right after the sessions. I'm intrigued by Breed, if it was DI, a Big Muff or a Rat.
@@mirata7748 There's a pic showing it with the broken neck and pickguard. If Endless was recorded after Lithium, I suspect it's the guitar used in the alt take (multitrack leaked) and maybe the album take was recorded after the incident with another guitar.
I don't think kurt had the jaguar or Mustang during the recording. all he had were the strats and the stolen mosrite. And I believe he installed a 59 Seymour Duncan set into his white and black strats (k records and the endless nameless strat) not JBs.
Could you possibly do a Drain you tone Video? Possibly my fav Nirvana tune but then that changes weekly 🤦🏻♂️👍🏼🔈 I’m off to watch that sound city...man I love this ✌🏼props Edit: my bad I didn’t know this was the beginning of a venture into the Nevermind tone series
Don't think he owned the jag during the Nevermind sessions, in the live tonight sold out extras, theyre rehearsing on a plain and kc is using his mosrite. Dunno if,or what songs he recorded on it but,he was using it at the time of recording.
If you don't have a neve preamp or software, what else can you use to get that overloaded console preamp tone? there must be a guitar pedal to get that territorial pissing sound by using a cheap preamp guitar pedal or something
No prob Bob!! He did go directly into the board though so that was a MAJOR thing! You got that covered though! Saw you used one of Danny boys videos when he interviewed Albini! Gotta give cred to him somewhere in there! His stuff on Nirvaner is AMAZING!
he was using the RAT pedal for Territorial

@@AaronRash if you need any gear help, i always here ! (Thank you for pin my comment Aaron !)
He used both, RAT in one ear and DS1 in the other
Naw. He plugged right into the board
I just bought one!!
That direct into the mixing board sound is the sound of New Day Rising by Hüsker Dü
I read that Kurt and Butch recorded the guitar for this song DI straight into the board
I can’t wait for you to do come as you are!!!!
I'll check it out! It might be a little more difficult with my echoflanger to get it sounding right

Lounge act or smells like teen spirit would be good next (teen spirit because it has many changes in affects like distortion clean and chorus)
lounge act+

Yeah but that wasn’t the tom strat I think, It was the earlier version of the tom strat which was the angled humbucker black strat

Such a good series. Thank you for sharing your work; I hope that you reach your goals.
I haven’t finished the video yet but as far as I know it’s a procorat pedal.
Let’s see if this is a myth…
no, it’s not. rat was used on bass for 'breed' if i recall correctly. this one was straight to the mixing board.
@@mr.fingers 🤨 just checked it again and Butch Vig himself said it was a pro co rat (straight into the mixing desk)

2 questions. 1. so your tone was with the amp or without? 2. he used modulation BEFORE distortion?
