- Kurt Cobain used a fender quad reverb to record their final album "In Utero" However - not all quad reverbs are created equal. This video is about the unique quad reverb Kurt had. This is without a doubt my favorite sounding guitar tone of all time! Hope ya dig it!
If you made an IR of this quad reverb, I think I speak for a lot of people that would buy it from you, dude!
Omfg absolutely.
Damn yeah
Yes please
IF AARON RELEASES THIS IMPULSE RESPONSE AND I MISS IT, PLEASE TAG ME IN A COMMENT HERE !!!! xx
Ditto
Aaron upload= good day
Big facts!
So true
SOOO TRUE

Real
the amp for people who don’t think a super reverb is loud enough, absolute beast.
For an amp not to be loud of that size it would have to not work
Don’t want to be a dick but actually the Super Reverb is only 45 watt compared to the Twin who is 100.
I used this when I played bass, it has a particular tone, but it's only 45w so it needed to be miked. It's a 6l6gc single push pull, mine have the original alnico speakers in it.
I can see why the bloke thought they were "Shitty speakers".... But it's perfect in context.
bro this is the most precise i've ever heart a tone recreation
There's a lot of us out here that feel and think the exact same way you do about this journey of tone, so thanks for all your hard work. Every video is important to us.
Your dedication to chasing the tone never ceases to amaze me. The amount of work you've done to perfectly recreate it, from building a custom guitar, reaching out and meeting people who knew and worked with Kurt, to finding stuff like this. You should be really proud man, this is extremely impressive, the quintessential source for anyone trying to recreate this tone. NirvanaGuitars does an amazing job as well, but this is next level.
damn man, this IR may be the first one i ever buy
such great content . i remember when in utero came out , listening with hedphones and then also cranking it up on larger speakers in our apartment thinking "nothing sounds like this" completely unique and different . just imagine if he was still with us all of the pioneering he could have done . he was out there ...
Yeah, maybe he would've stopped mimicking Mudhoney.
The tone in the intro piece is absolutely amazing!
I got chills @4:24. That is THE tone of that album. Nice work!
I love how the songs you demo are so close to copyright but then you use a couple different notes. It’s so interesting
What is the name of that song in the intro please :D
@@tomasholy8300 it’s not an actual song, but it’s based off of heart shaped box
@@THE-CRT Thank you :)
I'm so happy cuz today Aaron uploaded
I love your passion and dedication in this. Thank you!
Very interesting! I love the way you document this amazing journey and I appreciate the detail you go into. I'm excited about the IRs too!
I feel like the discovery made in this video perfectly explains the mystique of In Utero and reason why it still spellbinds guitarists three decades after its release: the extreme rarity of the equipment used on the record, whether by shrewd calculation or pure happenstance. It seems totally understandable that Kurt would settle on that particular amp with those particular speakers because, presumably, the rarity of those speakers meant that he had never heard his guitar sound like that before, so that had to be the sound of his last album. It’s the reason why we all still love the sound of this record, because of the rarity of that sound, because the sound isn’t easy to replicate, and very costly and impractical if you want to. It’s the reason why we haven’t heard a hundred other albums come out after In Utero that sound like In Utero, which in turn would have rendered the sound of the album wholly unremarkable.
I find this video to be VERY exciting. Thanks for sharing the good info and keep up the good work!!
I literally get so pumped for his videos!!!! CRIMINALLY UNDERAIDED
Man, these videos you make and the closeness of the tones you pull are amazing Aaron. I find them so interesting.
Your intro riffs are always top tier, I almost always go back to relisten
It’s amazing how close the Randall sounds through those speakers. I know how much pickups/amp/speakers matter but the speaker being by FAR the #1 factor here is pretty wild.
Your videos are so important! I hope you know how much we all appreciate this.
Keep these up man, these are insane!
You never miss Aaron, every video is just perfect. Thank you for making such quality, beautiful content 🖤
much respect for you Aaron. Amazing job!
As someone equally obsessed with Foo Fighters, it's so cool to see another creator out there taking the time to dive this deep into the minutia of gear and tone of a specific band. Love this content, dude. Keep it up!
Nailed it! Watching your videos always gives me gear envy!
This is great man! I know how much this probably means to you and it definitely should. I got into Nirvana about a year and a half ago when I started playing the guitar and I always had a specific liking to the melancholy but also loud and gritty nature of In Utero. It sounds perfect and you have taught me a lot about guitar and this band I’ve came to love so much. Keep creating, and you’re doing amazing.
Dude. World needs more people like you, to show love for what they do. Great job, very interesting !
This episode is like one of the main episodes in a season that drops a major info.
The A story…
This is the beginning of “full circle” quad reverb so makes it one of the most interesting episodes.
Thanks Aaron. Can’t wait for the next one
Love your videos so much man! Keep going.
These Videos are amazing never stop making them :)
Of course you found a nice old man who had a mint one! Only you Aron!!! I'm dying to get a hold of that IR! Thank you for your work!
love this video. super cool the whole time. a true tone nut with a good ear. great stuff dude
i've been counting the seconds till you upload again
Really enjoyed this - Thanks!
I have barely even heard In Utero my guy, I'm here for your journey alone, I appreciate the effort and the passion, Cheers
great video dude, the difference between speakers it's incredible. greets from Argentina!
Its been 1 year since i discovered nirvana and now you upload exactly today, and also and cover youter uploaded an nirvana cover exactly today!
Amazing how much a piece of gear can shape an Album's General tone. Thanks for the time and money invested in this.
Great work Aaron, thanks for everything👌
As an owner of a super six please release these IRs. Channel is amazing.

Awesome & interesting video mate…. Kurt’s tones were always unique yet simple!!
You're an inspiring human!
Asking questions, pushing for the answers, sharing both.
😄 👍
Another great video, what a difference those Utah speakers made. It was nice to see the original cover with amp also.
What a great video! I never thought speakers were so important for the tone. Thank you...
i love ur videos sm u are really underrated af
Keep the amazing content, it matters a lot ❤
Damn it’s always nice waking up on an English summer morning to find Aaron has made some more incredible moving pictures and sound for me to consume. Thank you Aaron. 🍰
I just discovered your channel but man you’ve got some really good content!
so glad you found that man. you deserve it
Omg IT S AN AMAZING video !!! Will you share that awesome IR ??? 😮
Hey Aaron, amazing video as always. Sounds absolutely amazing. I recently bought a silver face twin with the blue label Utah’s. They sound sound super far off the ones you have there. Awesome amps for sure!
Can’t wait to order one of your veleno copies also, super excited for it!
This is the most exciting video you have every made! I love info like this, if you wanted to you could try to play demos/ outake songs on the in utero to give a taste of what could've been!
Hey Aaron great video many thanks! Your settings for in utero tone nails the sound of the record on my moldy fender bassbreaker 45. Lol I've been soaking it in bleach lately
This (and the rest of your channel) are quite literally, (for me anyway) the most exciting audio journeys of tone for Nirvana, since Butch Vig (with his yellow-tinted glasses) sat behind the desk and showed us how he mixed Nevermind.
Excellent Aaron! Have loved your content for ages now 😎✌️
Respect from Manchester, United Kingdom ⚡⚡⚡
i love these kinda of videos! proving how important speakers are to the tone of an amp and can be the foundation of an albums sonic landscape. even better is using the same gear and getting the magic result
Wow, incredible discovery, great and interesting video, thanks man.
Great video.. I wish you were around in the 90s to see Kurt. His live playing was very under rated.
Great video! The accuracy of the sounds you get is so good. Those Utah speakers really were the missing piece of the puzzle I think.
I've been on a cab/speaker journey recently myself, and was lucky enough to pick up a great deal on a Marshall 4x10" from the 80s, quite a different sound to cabs with 12" speakers - but most similar to a 4x12" with a smaller stage footprint than a horizontal 2x12! This now opens up the oppurtunity to rip apart my Yamaha cab that came with Eminence speakers and put one of those in my Fender Blues Deluxe.. Won't be tracking down anything as rare as your Utah's anytime soon though lol
Not a Nirvana fan either, but I'm enthralled with the pursuit of tone, myself.
This is an awesome video, man.
my fav youtuber posted again yay
Looking forward to the IRs! 🙂
I, too, have been obsessed with the In Utero sound for as long as I can remember. Love your videos!
I hope you'll be making these IRs available. Can't wait to try them out!
BTW, if you're looking to partner up with a pro in the IR realm, you might want to contact York Audio. They seem to regularly have users ship them their rare cabs... Maybe even a pair of speakers would be enough.
Your videos are a piece of art
Thanks for these videos!!
Amazing work dude! 👏👏👏
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH OH MY 🙏 I LOVE YOU AND THE TONE SO SO MUCH.
sounds amazing, definitely looking forward to the IRs!
This is amazing and so informative. Can't wait to see what happens with this
Awesome video Aaron as always. I went and purchased a sans amp based on your last video. I have a silver face TWIN with Utahs...I was always told it was the cheapest version...now I'm pretty stoked.
There's so many videos about John Mayer & true bypass & "boutique" gear & all this tonal perfection. It's nice to see videos about tones that aren't so glamorous, trendy or pristine.
Dude thanks for this vid! I love different speakers and now, well, the hunt begins lol! Incidentally, at 6:27 I screenshotted that Mustang and I'm totally doing a Warmoth build to that exact guitar! That thing is so sick!
yessss
The most cool project you've done.
This channel s going to really explose someday 😳
This is one of my favorite videos on RUclips
Dude! This was great!
Watched a few of your videos and I am very intrigued. All those years ago when In utero was realsed I remember thinking what is this sound I am hearing? And now it's 2024 and when I decide to listen to in utero I still have the same feeling of the sound on that album , how amazing it sounds and unique the sound is it is easy to notice and wonder that something amazing was done to achieve the sound in utero has. After watching some of your videos and listening to you jam with the exact sound of in utero I have to suggest you should record a cd of the songs of in utero with just the guitar. The way you rock it is impressive 👍 you really should do it.
Awesome info!! Thank you for sharing!
super exciting! cant wait for the IR's!
Dude your videos are pure gold. Thank you for unlocking the past on this sound. I have one killer question I am dying to ask, perhaps you have already answered. As I'm sure many people know, there is a rumor, including a citation in the In Utero sheet music that Kurt used a rotovibe. At some point could you touch on this for us? I've been wanting to know since I was kid. I have a dunlop rotovibe in pieces in my closet you can have. It'll be my donation to the channel if you want to dive into it sometime. You'll just have to put it back together.
Aaron nonchalantly midway through one of the coolest videos on youtube: "i know this isnt the most exciting video ever..."
An IR pack of all your Nirvana sounds would be a nice collection. Nirvana were the reason I learnt the guitar. Looking forward to see more videos and the pack when it drops
YESSSSSS, capturing this tone for the future is gonna be unreal
I really enjoyed this video as I own a 1972 fender quad reverb that I got for free from a close friend a few years back and I love learning some of the amps history and importance (even if I’m not a nirvana fan) I just replaced the tubes and put some celestion vintage 30s in and it sounds killer!
Nice amp! so lucky for you to find such a well taken care of unit.!
Bringing it to reality for most people, I ask that if possible, get the same sound from this quad in a Boss Katana 50/100 MKII, greetings from Brasil ♥
Your channel is fkng awesome Aaron! 🤘😆❤
You're doing the lords work man.
The intro song is pure fire!!!
I was just looking for a quad reverb and found out that there are more types of speakers and was curious which ones Kurt used. So I was hoping you could make some video about it and here we are about a week later with this one, which explains everything. Love the production quality. Keep it going, we are excited for the Veleno.
As a beginner guitarist - I find these vids very helpful.
"I know this isn't the most exciting video" IDK man, this is pretty exciting! Cant wait to check out the IR you make, that's super exciting
literally captured the sound 🤘
You NAILED it
I love that we live in an era where we can basically take digital snapshots of analog amps that sound exactly like it
You're a hero
