    I'm running the Tokyo Roki RX-8 oil filter in my '16 STi with Motul 8100 X-Clean! Motor is running perfect. About to do my second oil change now.

    This was a solid video and it helped get me moving in a good direction to move away from an RC. I ultimately settled on Motul 8100 X-Clean EFE (5w30) for my 2018 STI because of the reasonably good resistance to shear, reasonably good additive package (for an oil NOT being used for longer drain intervals), EJ-specific UOAs that seem to look consistently good all-around, and its approval for Subaru use in Asian markets. I'll probably send a sample to Blackstone around 4,000 miles, and if all looks good make regular change intervals around 5,000 with periodic UOAs. When the warranty expires I'll probably move to X-Cess. Thanks for making the vid!

    Great video! I ran Rosella T6 for about 2 years on my original block & it was pretty good. It's provides good bang for your buck. Now I'm on built shortblock & have been using Amsoil 10w-40. I don't think I'll run anything else. The EJ257 loves it! Everything runs smoother. Better responsiveness, & a lot less noise & vibration. I also use NAPA Gold filters. They're what Moore Performance recommends & they've treated me well.
    I used Mobil 1 once & it made the most horrific noises on start up.
    Never tried Royal Purple, but its way too 'gimmicky' for me, & the cold temp. viscosity tests I've seen were pathetic.

    • @ThatWhiteTesla
      @ThatWhiteTesla  8 лет назад

      Yeah, Mobil 1 is not good with the EJ257 at all.

    • @SpencerTaylorOnline
      @SpencerTaylorOnline 6 лет назад

      Red Line is a better oil regardless of whatever bullshit Amsoil marketing spews out. It's marketing, not science. There's a reason why the most expensive commercial production pumps and compressors use Red Line ONLY and not Amsoil - it's the best. I would give Red Line 10W40 a try. You'll never look back.

    • @SpencerTaylorOnline
      @SpencerTaylorOnline 6 лет назад

      Mobile 1 is garbage and not technically a synthetic, which is a whole different issue. Regardless, Castrol or Valvoline are much better options than Mobile 1. I recommend and use Red Line.

    I have a '16 STI and I didn't go with Rotella because it's 5w-40, and I was only ever planning on running 5w-30. I changed my oil just before 1500 miles with Pennzoil Platinum. I'm just over 3000, and I'll be changing it out to see what it looks like. From the factory, mine came with a black filter. Local dealers only sell the blue filters, so that's what I have used.

    You mentioned the Euro blend Castrol at the end of the vid. I have been running that in my lightly modded 03 WRX and have noticed very little oil consumption. (85k-ish on motor). Been running the gold jug 5w30 and am pleased with this stuff. Seems to be engineered for high revving turbo cars. Worth looking into for anyone oil shopping.

  • @wilson2455
    @wilson2455 7 лет назад

    You forgot to mention ' Heat Soak ' in the engine & turbo. These STI engines & turbo's run VERY hot ! The reason I run 5W40 in my STI is that you need that ( w40 ) to deal with the high temps once you turn the engine off. The oil is no longer being circulated & cooled. If you don't have a ' Turbo Timer ' to let the engine idle & cool for 1 - 2 minutes, the heat soak can become a huge problem. A good 5W40 oil will protect the bearings ( especially in the turbo ) by not breaking down under those high heat loads.

    How do you feel about the Motul 8100 Eco-nergy 5w30... My local performance shop said any oil in a Sti should be changed every 3,000 miles... Do you think that's bs?

    • @ThatWhiteTesla
      @ThatWhiteTesla  8 лет назад +2

      +Fatima McAllister I think Motul is a great oil. However, it doesn't need to be every 3,000 miles. I've seen many UOA's (oil analysis tests) come back on oils like Schaeffer's and Motul with 6000-7000 miles that showed they still had life, and that was in vehicles running 375-450 WHP. If you're tracking your car that's a different story, but for street driving 3,000 on a quality oil is a bit silly.

  • @bat3759
    @bat3759 4 года назад

    If your oil filter is so dirty that it needs to go through the bypass valve, then you aren’t changing your oil often enough, or you have a bigger issue with the motor. The blue oem filters are garbage, they are nothing but a cheap fram painted blue. A lower psi bypass is ok if you are changing the oil regularly. Schaeffer is good oil, when I worked as a marine diesel mechanic, we put it in all of our Cummins and many of them had over 15000 hours and still running strong despite all the abuse they went through.

    I've tracked my 2008 STi since 2012 with water methanol and 380 WHP/410 WTQ. The ONLY oil I will use is Red Line 15w50. I'm running balls out for 4-5 25 minute sessions a day. Obviously, for non track use you don't need a 50 weight. I would run 10w40. Red Line is the best oil available. It's used for almost all compressors and pumps at every refinery in the US. Rotella is OK for a low quality oil. It's no comparison to Red Line.

    • @SpencerTaylorOnline
      @SpencerTaylorOnline 6 лет назад +1

      I agree with everything you're saying. Only the turbo cars require 5W30 oil for Subies. I have a race built engine, which is why I run 15W50 when it's not winter. I run 5W50 in colder temps. Regardless, this has nothing to do with Red Line being the best oil you can buy. You can get Red Line in any viscosity like 0W20, and it will provide superior protection to other lubricants. In other words, the viscosity is a function of your usage and not the brand.

    Are you sure you aren't just mistaking the smoothness based off your only experience with the OEM oil was in its break in period??? my 18 WRX ran like crap during its break in period i.e. very loud motor whines droning out the exhaust and sticky shifts, after 3k miles in my WRX I went to Subaru and had them change my oil, low and behold afterwards my car was a new beast giving me exhaust notes i've never herd before as well as shifting smoother from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 4th. Don't know if its just me or not but I think you should retract that statement until your sure the oil made the difference and not just the break in period making the car round it self out. I was told by a buddy who is a Subaru mechanic (hasn't worked on my car) that running oil that wasn't meant for that specific car could lead to silly mishaps. To avoid everything 100% and not take a HUGE gamble on damaging your baby I would use the recommended oil. Its not like the Subaru oil is of lower quality so why even risk it. There just isn't a logical explanation to use anything else, or am I just missing something?????

  • @stevekjr9563
    @stevekjr9563 8 лет назад +2

    So how would it shift smoother with just changing the oil? Was the throttle response smoother?

    • @ThatWhiteTesla
      @ThatWhiteTesla  8 лет назад +4

      Obviously the oil doesn't impact the gearbox directly. I'd guess from dumping the so-so OEM dino oil and switching to a higher viscosity, higher lubricity synthetic led to less harmonics/vibration being felt in the gearbox, thus giving a perception of easier or more smooth shifting. Part of it is placebo, but there is no question once you dump break-in oil for a quality synthetic there are noticeable changes.

    • @stevekjr9563
      @stevekjr9563 8 лет назад +1

      +ElsaSTI Ok, I get what you mean now. Fluids can have a huge influence on feel and smoothness.

    But the most wear in tear is at start up!! So would Schaffer still be good for cold starts in 35 degree?

    • @ThatWhiteTesla
      @ThatWhiteTesla  8 лет назад

      Yes, if you break down the oil numbers (5W40), the first number is the viscosity during cold start regardless of temperature. If you're running a 5W oil they'll all behave the same at startup. The second number is the viscosity at operating temperature.

If you go online to the main website, there usually is a distributor locator, & you can find a shop or store to get it from locally. 👍🏻

I know car calls for 5/30 but thats very fuel efficient and from almost every UOA every x/30 comes back about a x/20 so figure id chime in and get everyones opinion

    • @sezwo5774
      @sezwo5774 4 года назад +1

      @@alexortega714 I think it only comes in 5-40. If you live in a warmer climate and remember to warm up the car before hitting boost 5w-40 should be fine for that year car. Newer cars have silver rod bearing, t6 a diesel oil with plenty of zinc and phosphorous is not ideal as zinc in presence of acid corrodes silver. In that case stick to a non-diesel energy conserving 5w-30 weight oil. These have limits on zinc, or use a thicker but low saps oil with low zinc if you can find one.

    • @sezwo5774
      @sezwo5774 4 года назад +1

      Oh, I see Shell has a new t6 oil in 5w30 weight for both diesel and gas engines. It may be an ideal oil for an older model that does not have silver bearings. Perhaps a mix of 5-30 t6 with some 5w-40 according to season?

    Bottom line, in my opinion and in my experience with these motors. The ej255 and 257 are supposed to have 5w40 in it. They went to 5w 30 to get better gas mileage and meet the emissions goals. 95% of bad rod bearings Iv seen over the years are cars that run 5w 30. Save your rod bearings. Run rotella t6 and change every 3k. Get a Dyno tune, stock or not. Don’t beat the snot out of it everyday. It will last for 200k miles.
