    Around 3:15: "A lot of people think this controls the power to the back or the front. It's not actually how it works."
    Around 6:30: "Fully pushed to the back to send more power to the rear wheels..."
    I appreciate you taking the time to explain this but If I were you, I'd rework the video. When explaining DCCD, please don't read it to us (presumably from the internet somewhere), please put it all in layman's terms with your own words.
    Also, 90% of people don't need to manually set DCCD? Son, 100% of STI owners bought an STI for a reason. Because we love maximum acceleration, cornering, and outright performance all the time. That's why we bought the STI.
    If you're so afraid of the DCCD manual controls, there's a nice minivan out there for you somewhere. Booya grannie. :o)
    Gave a thumbs up for owning an STI though. :oD

    Yeah cheers m8, that did help clear a little misunderstanding as to the functional purpose of the DCCD. Some reviews I have seen of the Sti have not warned about the need for loose surface when using manual mode, and have left the impression that more power is put toward the rear than roughly 60%. Most have just raved about how cool a feature it is, and why no one else (car manufactures) has done it.

    trac mode means the brake vectoring is active and the other yellow light is traction control disabled. when trac mode turns off and the yellow light remains on it means brake vectoring is disabled and so is traction control (all assists fully off).you cannot damage the drive train with dccd set to lock all the time. what will happen is the rear diff. will overheat and the system will unlock the diffs automatically to prevent damage.locking the diffs. is specifically for dirt / mud / snow racing and drag racing as it will provide a better launch on the straight and help eliminate front axle hop. after the drag race and before you turn you should unlock the diffs.

    • @DFCobalt60
      @DFCobalt60 6 лет назад

      ARGH28 if it is only locking the centre diff, how can it affect drivetrain? If both front and rear diffs aren't locked? I have gotten conflicting info...

    • @giann3021
      @giann3021 6 лет назад +5

      The centre diff allows for front and rear tires to spin at different speeds. If you're taking a turn, the front of the car is travelling a greater distance than the rear (as it is is closer to the edge of the "circle" drawn by the car), therefore both front tires spin faster than the rear ones. If the diff is locked, it will force the tires to skid as the drivetrain will stop the front and rear axles from spinning at different speeds -- This creates a lot of physical strain on the components.

    I've had my sti for a year over a year now and I routinely drive with traction completely off with the dccd set to 80/20 when I'm feeling spirited. The car handles much more responsive and understeers less with torque distribute to the rear. Telling owners not to use these features defeats the purpose of having them! You won't destroy your drive train, the cars are made of to use these features!

    • @WillHasManyHobbies
      @WillHasManyHobbies 5 лет назад +1

      DCCD set to 80/20? You must have an older model since the newer one is 41/59 max and maybe you mean 20/80? I have not heard of an STI having the diffs lock to allow the front wheels to spin more.

    • @WillHasManyHobbies

    I use Sport# in traffic jams bc it's easier to not stall with this fussy clutch.
    And correct me if I'm wrong, but DCCD adjustments merely adjust the amount of slip that's allowed F-R in the center diff.
    Torque apportionment is unaffected, _unless_ you start spinning wheels.
    RWD feel depends on torque apportionment _without_ even spinning your wheels.
    I set my C.Diff to manual and all the way back (most "open") - auto implies it's making changes constantly, thus wearing parts faster than a manual (unchanging) setting.

    2011 STI. I bought my car in January & live in the Rockies. I quickly learned that I don't ever want traction control. If you purposely drift on ice, (I work at a racetrack), the traction control will take the throttle away from you & apply the brakes mid drift when you need throttle control to control the car. Thankfully I had the space to spin out without doing any damage. Now the first thing I do every time I start the car, no matter the road conditions, is hold down the traction control button to shut it off!

    • @Bang4YerBuck
      @Bang4YerBuck 6 лет назад

      About the DCCD, I totally agree with you on that. Auto + for slippery roads, Auto for most of the time, & Auto - on the track. On icy roads I use Auto + & Sport mode when I want to have a spirited drive. S# get you out of whack way to quick on snow packed roads & an icy winter track.

  • @ZeroJoJoZero
    @ZeroJoJoZero 9 лет назад

    It might be just me, but disabling the traction control I find it's a little easier to get off the line smoother. I'm not talking about launching the car, just normal at the stop light. Since the car has AWD, it tends to need a bit more throttle and 2WD cars and the revs die down quite a bit faster when clutch is engaged.
    I now need to try with Auto - and manual at the lowest setting to see what it does for the same situation.
    Going back to traction control, this car has so much grip that when you are on a dry road (even wet really), you can feel very secure in having no traction control. You will feel the traction control fight a little when taking really sharp corners around a 90 degree bend though. Even without traction control on, the car understeers a bit, but you have to be pushing it.

    Full diff lock WILL get you home if you snap a front axle and still wanna get home without a tow truck, that way it doesn't just send all the power to the broken axle. I drove my car for a week til my new axle came in, had the shaft clunking around a bit but got me everywhere I needed to go. Just an informative fyi.

    Went to the Subaru dealership to get my wife an Outback. (I was rooting for a Forrester), then after test driving both, I switched to the Outback and she fell in love w/ the Forrester. So we ended up buying the Forrester. As we were buying the SUV, a young guy comes in and he is selling his WRX STi Limited back to the dealership. He came to my sales person and told him he was moving out of the US. So the car had 6300 miles on it... MSRP was $42154. The dealer took the car back and I was taking a look at it like a pupy dog. I (was) driving a 2010 WRX. Loved my WRX and had it since 10/2009. So we bought the Forrester Saturday. And I showed up on Wednesday and bought the WRX STi. Paid $34K, My old WRX was sold and I got $12K for it (73K miles on ODO) Used $10K as a down payment and walked out with a $22K loan on a (pretty much) brand new WRX STi. I am still adjusting to the short ratio gearing... it feels somewhat slower than my old WRX. It takes 3rd to get to 60MPH were in my WRX I hit 60MPH in second gear. And it revs way to high for low speeds... I am still to "be trained" on the STi factor but otherwise the interior, the features are great improvements. Oh and that wing... I will look for anyone with a silver WRX to exchange that wing. I think I was way to used to my old WRX. Speed wise what can I say, I also own a Corvette Z06 and that thing goes to 60MPH in 1st gear. So no point of comparisson. But for my DD, the WRX will be EXCELLENT.

    A true veteran STI owner KNOWS how to use manual diff controls. But you're right on that you ONLY fully lock it 50/50 when on heavy deep snow, mud or any slow speed bad weather condition. It's the same reason why you don't go fully locked on a Jeep at highway speeds, it will mess up your drivetrain.

  • @speedfiend925
    @speedfiend925 9 лет назад

    ElsaSTI, that was REALLY good! I bet you could have gone at least 5 to 10 minutes longer exploring all the features you discussed. Need to watch this again as it was pretty feature dense. So if I heard you correctly, auto plus for more traction, auto minus for a more RWD feeling car on grippier surfaces and full auto for most situations. If I recall these settings are part of your DCCD. The dial in the middle basically controls your throttle response, with Intelligent mode being least aggressive and Sport Sharp being the most aggressive with Sport being the baby bear setting, so just right. :D Well done sir! Keep making more videos like this. :)

    • @ThatWhiteTesla
      @ThatWhiteTesla  9 лет назад +1

      victor bozzo You got it. AUTO+ is for slippery roads (wet, snow, ice) to place more focus on keeping traction. AUTO- is for high-grip situations that will loosen up the car in the corner, and you can choose to go manual mode and switch the lockup between the front and back and compare how the car handles in the corners until you find a setting you like. Again, DO NOT go 100% LOCK and drive the car hard on a high-grip surface. Full 100% Lock in manual mode should only be used on things like snow and ice.
      You have the SI-Drive down perfect.
      As long as you stay out of LOCK play around with settings and feel how the car responds. Just remember (especially if you turn off all VDC assists) to not push the car too hard. When people begin to experiment and drive it too hard with no assists it's easy to end up in trouble.
      Good luck and have fun!

      victor bozzo Oh, and yes. I could have made this video way more technical and longer explaining what lockup is and how this complicated system actually works. It really is quite complex. This is the short, average joe version to help you get started and give you a general idea about Subaru's DCCD system.

      +ElsaSTI So if the center diff should never be locked when on dry grippy surfaces, why is it that anyone who owns a subaru drag car will go full lock when launching at the drag strip? Or anyone who takes their car to any sort of racetrack for that matter? locked 50/50 torque to the front and rear is ideal for a good launch in AWD cars, it's not like the 6mt is made of glass, they are quite durable even stock. I agree that the average person should not fully lock the diff under normal driving conditions, but to boil it down to just never use it unless you are on a low-traction surface seems a little disingenuous.

    • @bob76sti
      @bob76sti 9 лет назад

      +Kevin Corbett I could see maybe locking it in a drag, but not at the track. If driving any track with turns you're going to want a more rearward bias of the power to help with turnin. With the diff fully locked you can really tell how much harder it is to turn on high traction surfaces, and the front tires kind of chatters, or clunks along the surface, especially on concrete, or blacktop when making tight turns.

      Yes it's always AWD.
      All these settings do is change how much "slip" is allowed before it is limited ("limited slip differential"). For the center diff, that's just how much the front wheels are allowed to rotate slower or faster than the rear wheels (or vice versa)

    this is why i prefer older generations of sti (07 and older) one switch for DCCD and it is a LSD in the front, center and rear so it only locks when it hits a certain amount of power. whic still allows open differential drivability with the ability to lock when it is needed.

    Everything you said in this video is correct, except I'm going to need some references for the C.Diff only distributing 50-some-odd% to the rear wheels. Having worked for Subaru, and having been flown out to test track these cars previously, the manufacturer reps have always said that as much as 80% can be distributed to the rear. Now, I understand they could be totally off their rockers, but this has been backed by several different sources and various magazines have also been around the same figures. Again, not challenging you, but if you can cite your references, would love to get any additional info.

      I've seen it in a Subaru presentation from SOA, but here is a link to a CNET article as well: www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/not-every-subaru-all-wheel-drive-system-is-created-equal/
      "Nominal torque split for the DCCD system sits at a rear-biased 41:59."
      If you had 80% going to the rear wheels the car would behave a whole lot differently than it does when you drop your DCCD down

    I question your use of "lockup" as a term. A locked differential functions identically to a spool, it can transfer up to 100% of the input torque to either output shaft. Locking the center differential is desirable on slippery surfaces, but would make cornering difficult because it would not allow the rear axle to turn more slowly than the front. If the center diff is locked (or de-facto locked by means of maximum pressure on the torque transfer clutch), it should only occur during straight-line acceleration under heavy engine output.

I just bought my STI about a month ago and I remember my friend played around with the settings. After watching your video I am VERY concerned. You mentioned to never leave it "locked". On the panel, I had it under "automatic" but when I went to the manual settings, it was defaulted to "locked". Will it be an issue if it was "locked" when going to the manual settings but my dash board read "automatic"? In other words, was it really driving in automatic? or was it taking in consideration the "locked" condition?

      Awesome numbers there. Know though, that c.diff adjustments only affect how much "limited slip" to allow before making the other end of the car get involved; the diff is "open" up to that amount of difference in wheel speed. I.e. (short of locking it outright) it shouldn't affect torque apportionment F to R unless you're spinning tires.
      (Unless I'm way off; I'd ask the tuner)

    I disagree with the blanket statements about which direction you want to move the lockup depending on level of grip. In Auto -, there’s less lockup. Since the system is naturally rear biased, this helps the driver rotate the car if slowing (trail braking, etc), and if accelerating (power oversteer). Auto makes it a bit more neutral. Auto + generates more overall grip, but usually results in more understeer. Manual mode also allows the system to disable when grabbing the handbrake….which will also help rotate the car. Most rotation is achieved by being in Manual - mode (as little lockup as possible), while allowing for minimal lockup when grabbing the handbrake. Lock works nice in deep snow, accelerating from a stop on any slippery surface (think icy intersection), or pulling out a stuck car…of course traction and stability control should always be turned off for all of this.

    • @nthgth
      @nthgth Год назад +1

      Totally agree. I think the point is that c.diff adjusts LSD lockup parameters, not strictly torque bias.
      I'm not 100% but I think the wheels with least grip will always slip first (accel or decel) and the c.diff settings are about changing how _much_ we let them slip before making the other wheels use their traction too.
      It's my understanding that this shouldn't affect anything untill and unless wheelspin happens in the first place.

It should not have a 'boring' setting and then a 'medium boring' setting and then finally the 'fun swtting' that you actually paid for. The thing makes me upset is that sometimes i know that i am not enjoying the experience as much as i should be. Why would Subaru want me to enjoy their car a bit less with other settings?? Kinda ridiculous! I also dont like the fact that the settings do not stay in place if you have changed it to Sport Sharp. It will only stay in Intelligent or Sport.

    I also disagree with the VDC statements. If you’re pushing your car hard enough to fiddle with the DCCD, you already need to be either turning down or turning off the traction/stability controls…especially if you’re driving in winter conditions. I live in Alaska and spend 6 months out of the year doing power slides daily to and from work, etc. With proper tires and mindful driving, VDC just gets in the way of the car doing what the driver tells it to do. I only turn mine back on if I’m doing mindless highway driving.

      Check on forums, but logic would tell me Yes, if it's def just straight-line that's safe, and the best way to ensure all tires are using all the traction they can. Same reason you'd use full lock in deep snow - allowing slip (so anything less than full lock) allows the tires with slightly more grip to not help push the car when they really could.
