- Join Team O'Neil instructor Al Moody in testing the Subaru SI-Drive modes in his Impreza STI on snow and ice here at the rally school. Subaru's SI-Drive modes change the throttle pedal sensitivity, giving you a different driving experience in each setting.
Intelligent mode gives the driver a linear throttle curve, as you gradually press the accelerator pedal, the engine will accelerate proportionally. Sport mode will give you more actual throttle opening sooner in the travel of the throttle pedal, and sport sharp (Sport #) mode will do the same to an even greater degree.
Which throttle mode is the best? That depends entirely on personal preference, road surface, and driving style.

For those who don’t track the car and just daily drive it (yes, we exist), Intelligent Mode is for stop and go traffic so you don’t fry the clutch when inching forward at 7 miles an hour on the 405. (Intelligent gives you the sensation of driving a naturally aspirated engine or old school manual). Sport Sharp is for high speed and overtaking and passing people. Regular Sport Mode is great too but it’s basically your middle ground. If you are changing speed quickly and often go into Sport Sharp. If you’re cruising without changing speed or driving in stop and go traffic put it into Intelligent mode. Intelligent Mode gives your more predictable control on the accelerator, Sports Sharp however will get you where need to go quickly and effectively.

With an access port you can adjust the boost targets in each mode, which I find is a better use of the SI Drive. At stage 1+ intelligent is 8 psi, sport is 15 psi, and sport# is 18.5. They should have made it that way from the factory, rather than only adjusting throttle response.
Good video! Sometimes less throttle response helps you take a corner smoother. That one took me a while to learn.
I would love to see another video on the center diff settings. The most confusion I see is around auto+ and auto- sending biasing the power to an end of the car. I would like to see the following questions answered:
Which is better for a looser feeling car or preventing understeer?
What about using the handbrake on snow/ice to help turn the car? From what I know it sounds like a poor idea and I noticed you didn't use the handbrake at all.

Like, if the DCCD is in full lock, then does that effectively change the braking bias of the car? Since the front and rear wheels have to move at the same speed, then the total braking force on the front an rear axles might be evenly distributed across the car instead of separated front/rear like normal.

Yes the center diff affects brake bias exactly like you're thinking.
We will do a video shortly, but the answer is that everything is a compromise...
Braking for corners you would want it locked, mid-corner you'd want it more open, coming out you'd want it more locked.

Pretty good on smooth roads, the suspension is definitely the limiting factor when you get into anything rough at all.

If you have that STI feeling in your pants...you might want to consult your doctor
I don't know if it's true but I heard that the intelligent mode does not really improve fuel economy. If that is true, then what's the point of having this drive mode?
I just leave it in s# all the time. You have to adjust your clutching for each mode. Else stall out.
How can you set it to be on S# at all times? Everytime I turn off the car it changes back to normal

I have one of the first Subaru H6 models with SI-Drive, where 'intelligent' also limits the maximum torque to about about 50-60%, which I find very stupid... I don't mind the more laid back throttle response, but I still want to get 100% torque / power if or when I need it.
I would only go in sport mode, in this environment!

It sounds like sport mode gives you get 100% throttle response from a shorter pedal travel? Does that mean you get the same engine response from the toned dowm modes by pressing the pedal further/ faster? Or is the ECU also slowing the ramp rate as as it changes the throttle curve?
It's the latter, the ECU is adjusting stuff according to requested torque. You can easily verify this if you have the AccesPort or the Tactrix openport to have a look in the different tables for the 3 different SI Drive mode.

100% it is a gimmick. Linear is the best mode.
Although tuners can utilize those modes for varied boost and timing.

This must be the worst video on this channel... everyone should just use S mode - the only linear mode without any adjustment acting as if there was no SI drive at all. Your leg is the best way to adjust throughout the whole length of the throttle pedal, learn it kids..
