Great video. Only thing I would disagree with is the letting your car idle for long periods of time. Most wear occurs during cold starts. The longer your car takes to warm up, the longer you are in that wear zone. Idling your car takes longer for the oil to heat up and properly lubricate. The general rule is let your car warm up for 30 to 60 seconds and then drive. Drive conservatively and don't go into boost until oil temp is up to operational temps. We get temps of -35 degrees celsius here and it would take at least 20 minutes of idling to get it near operating temps. On cold days like that 60 seconds is more than enough to get the oil moving through the motor. 5 minutes of conservative driving and your car is at operating temperatures.
I agree 5 min on a really cold day is more then enough. 2 min on a normal hot day and just drive low rpm and stay away from boost and ur fine. Synthetic oil heats up quick. 20 min ur just burning gas
As a 12 year ASE certified mechanic, I have to say this is an outstanding video! I hope everyone follows the information you gave to a tee. Never buy just anyones racecar, always test them on the way they treat their cars first.
Until you mentioned this, never even know this was an issue. Love the "3M method" Got it. I love these kinds of video because they are really educational. Nice job Evan!
Hey man, wanna let you know, a major cause of cylinder four ring land failure is due to an improper tune. The fuel delivery to cylinder four was running lean the closer you get to fuel cut, a ECM update from Subaru helped eliminate that, but that didnt always trickle down to Tune shops, not in all cases but it was pretty common, -your friendly neighbourhood Subaru Technician! But good video, explains alot to people!
is there a TSB or Special coverage to get that update done free to the user of the car. Just wondering as ill be picking up a 15-17 sti in the next few weeks
That bit about mashing the throttle in high gears, good tip. Some people in the Focus ST community don't understand this and get a nice repair bill or at least have to go get warranty work.
Imho best preventative mod is parallel fuel rails ....you don't even have to buy new ...you can just source a second factory fuel regulator and some fuel hose... then you can just add 2 y-splits one pre / one post fuel rails. To complement this - Id recommend Catch Can Walbro fuel pump bigger injectors Bosch coils (Obviously Get 3 inch turbo back / CA intake - but forget the equal length headers... ive been there , waste of money) Add some boost and get it tuned. Excedy HD clutch & lightened flywheel. Short shift kit. Big ass brembos then you can look at intercoolers and a bigger turbo Then you start throwing money into suspension Then your wife gets really pissed off. Then you buy a motorbike instead.
I've owned my '02 WRX since it had 75 miles on it, and I have some complaints... but nothing close to millions. Personally: - Every rock that hit the stock windshield = chip - stock brake rotors had to be turned 2 or 3 times before the warranty ran out (and I replaced them) - clearcoat came off the hood (intercooler) scoop first, then the rest of the car later 😄 - Shop manuals cost $500 - The high and low beams are integrated into 1 headlight assembly (i.e. overdrive issues) - fat, ugly spoiler - body panels so thin and flexible that you dare not sit on them! 😆 - No ability to turn the radio on without turning on the entire electrical system (unlike GM's cars... Hey, they do, do something good! 😅) - tiny foot pedals - catalytic convertor installed in front of the turbocharger (if it fails, it'll blow right into the turbo fans) Other than that, I absolutely love it! I get to go on a roller coaster ride every time I leave the house! 🤣
Great video and good tips. Ringland failure is such a common problem with subarus that even your guys that keep up and stay on top of everything still have Ringland failure.
+JD JoyrideTV i would imagine that ringland failrue is more on the newer EJ25 motors since everone that ive talked to with baja tubros, forester XT's and Outback Turbos havent had ringland failure
+Evan Shanks fact, using higher octane gas will not doing anything for you engine if it isn't rated for it. If you car takes 87, use 87. It is easy to over octane an engine and cause pre Ignition, doesn't happen often but is possible.
I've got a 2016 STI and the first I brought was a catch can. After 5000+ miles not a single drop of oil in the can. I spoke to the uk's largest Subaru turner and they informed me that a catch can or AOS is pointless and a waste of money on a stock STI. However, they said you only need one if you decide to get a more aggressive tune or larger turbo etc. So don't waste your money, I proved this myself and took mine off after 5000 miles. Hope this helps you guys. Stage 2 onwards get a catch can. Stock cars not needed.
Dr. Tautology no worries hope it helps, I also tested the Injen cold intake and put it on the dump. Although the car made more power it was dangerously lean and so I took it off straight away. Alway, get a tune if you install a cai 👍
The coolant mod is also Important. Make sure you get the oil separator. And if u really love the subi rumble get aftermarket headers that flow more freely on the drivers side head (cyl 2&4)
Maybe if you are running high boost and running the car hard. If you just drive it around normally and get on it every now and then. No need for either of those thing.
I learned my lesson, I have to buy a engine rebuild kit for my legacy gt now. I was a total noob and used mostly 87 for gas and I didn't have a good enough job to afford the good stuff most the time and thought it wouldn't make a difference:( thank God for this video honestly
I've literally watched all of your videos since day one, keep up the good work Evan! Was so awesome to hear Touge Tuning in this video, they are the only shop to ever touch my car, very knowledgable and glad to see someone is spreading the word. Thanks Evan
Got my 06 wrx with 129k on it, its been a year since i own her, still going strong. Thanks for the vid and info. If you will ever be in NYC area let us know. Will make a good cruise lol.
Igor Subarist Vlogs any car meets around? Im right outside NYC and just bought a 2011 wrx all stock and would love to talk to someone who knows a lot about these cars!
Been there, it's kind of a bummer. I planned on running the stock motor in my '11 wrx for a lot longer than I did. I planned on building the motor anyway but it happened sooner than I thought.
Catch cans and an accessport should be the the first two mods you do IMO. Its amazing how much junk catch cans can stop from going into your motor. EL headers FTW! Subie rumble = death haha
Definitely agree with not flooring it at low rpms because I was wide open in fourth then shifted to 5th and it was at about 2500 and I ended up getting rid knock and ended up getting a new motor
(This is me, here.) > dreams of owning a Subaru > will someday hopefully own one > obviously watches entire video because Evan is a G....... Also would not like my motor to blow up in my face if I were to purchase such a vehicle
This is me> owned 2 subarus> blew up ej255 in first one due to ringland failure plus my headgaskets leaking> Sold the other one> won't buy another one unless fa20t powered
Good tips, except the warming up your car by idling 5-10 mins. It is better for your motor to warm it up running, just keep it below ~3500-4000 rpm. It will warm up faster and in the long run avoid unnecessary wear to the engine.
Not when you have forged internals (in my case). Forged internals take longer to heat up and expand so you can really hurt your motor if you drive it without actually letting it idle. I know it's an extreme case but that's the only reason I said it in the video!
It heats up quicker because it works harder than idling. Oil has 2 numbers, like my oil in my 02 wrx is 5w-40. First number is cold oil viscosity and second number is at full operating temp. So running your motor up until operating temp isn’t very healthy. I warm my car up before I drive and have 225k on stock block and I drive it pretty hard.
+Evan Shanks I just thought I'd add that for people who aren't really savvy to the mechanical side of cars so every doesn't hear "use highest octane possible" and start putting 93 in their 7:1 comp ratio N/A econoboxs. No disrespect intended, great video.
Started with an STI on tuesday now I’m here. No, it isn’t exploded lol. I’ve been in the Subaru game for 3 years and this is my first sti and first turbo
RIP my EJ257. 2nd motor and I wasn't replacing it again! Easiest way to avoid ringland issues is to buy a LEXUS. What this man doesnt mention is that the EJ257 is very unbalanced and the flat 4 has uneven wear on the rings gravity is the biggest problem. The top of the rings are always starved of oil (especially on startup/warmup) and they will eventually prematurely fail....

Hey even I own a 2011 WRX and i have a Cobb V3 access port and I want to have oil temp gauge but I can't find the monitor for it and I was wondering if it was listed under another name?
Good tips I already knew about warming my car up I never try to drive it cold in weather in 35° and below I’ll let my car warm up about 20 minutes or more. I’m thinking about getting a sti later on this year I hear alot of people being scared of these cars I never hurt any of my cars and I’m not scared to drive a subi everyone has there opinions
my only gripe is leaving your car idling for 5-10minutes. if you cannot drive your car gently for the first 10minutes anyway, you need to practice self control. ontop of that, the transmission does not warm up sitting in the driveway
I can't find the article in the description that he was talking about, just a hell of a lot of social media crap. Good video though! thanks for the sound advice.
Forged, E85 and aftermarket ECU, no probs with the engine. But the transmission is another story. After all, I've blown only 2 of em. (well, the 2nd one is on it's way going kaboom, but you can tell by the sound) ;)
Would like more info about your aftermarket ECU. I'm bound and determined to own an 08ish STI hatch. Trying to get my head around keeping a built motor running after the stock one goes
People always talk about gas brands like it matters, but in the end, it's basically all the same government commodity gasoline. The best gas to get is always just the freshest gas, and best way to get fresh gas is honestly to always go to whichever gas station is always the busiest. And the best way to keep any turbo car from blowing up is to avoid manual boost controllers at all cost. Boost at lower RPMs can lead to bending rods and such, so only up the boost if you have a map to go with it.
wow awesome video! very helpful! I have similar mods and was wondering if you could make a video on the access port and what are good gauges to have and what to look for! love the videos!
No mention of e85 or heat soak with a stock radiator? All good tips in the video but from what I know, tuning with e85 and running an upgraded radiator can reduce temps by a lot, reducing the likelihood of ringland failure, etc. Also with e85 you can advance the timing and make a lot more power! Thanks for the video though, a couple things in there I should consider.
Hey do you think its necessary tune just for a down pipe with the stock engine ? Or I can just install the down pipe and no tune couse I know its exhaust not intake that's my question a lot of people say yes some others no
i wish i could get an access port for my baja turbo. and also i wish i had simple bolt on stuff that i could do to my car. thankfully haven't had to get my motor rebuilt yet and im at 174k. i have had to get head gaskets done to my car and also a new tubro but those where above 160K.
Those tips may help but will not address the root of the problem: Subaru's OE ring gaps are way too tight for a turbo engine with a ~4" bore; ring lands break when the top ring gap closes up and the ring seizes to the bore. Most tips like these help because in the end they reduce combustion chamber temperatures and thus the expansion of the compression rings. The best way to stave off ring land failure is to remove the pistons and file-fit the gaps to more appropriate values. And if you're going that far into the engine you might as well put in forged pistons with decent rings and proper ring gaps.
I don't think the upcoming STI's are gonna have any current FA motor since they are too small to make power efficiently. Unless they come up with something like an FA25 or FA30 which would be awesome!!! Current FR-S owner.
What do you mean they are too small? The EJ207 is very close to the same displacement as the FA20 and it has been used for years in the JDM STI. People build the crap outta them and in stock form can actually handle more power than the EJ257.
KALI1080 yeah but I said "too small to make power efficiently" I mean if you compare a 3 liter engine with a 2 liter one, which one is easier to squeeze more power out of it?
Hey, I was thinking of getting a subaru but there aren't any shops specialized in Subarus where I live. I've already read a lot about the EJ25, if I get one first thing I would be doing would be the safety upgrades such as AOS, cyl 4 cooling mod, equal length headers and killerB pickup tube. The thing is, is it worth getting one if I don't know how to do the maintenance myself and there aren't specialized shops for subarus near ?
I drive a '10 WRX, wondering if 1500rpm on 5th gear is too low? I don't floor it by any means but just wondering if that would means its lugging at that rpm
Nice vid to get me to know about ring land , I got a question , I got a 12 wrx stage 1 93ot, I do maintain my car but I track my car once a week ,like I drive it real hard, all the mod I got is an aem intake and a Cobb AP, am I gonna get failure ? Or it only happens on sti most of the time ?
while not everyone is going to have the same experiance, my 2014 wrx cracked a piston/ringland with less than 24k miles on a car i bought new and babied. I had a very reputable shop mod the car to 300whp with a custom 93 tune and put less than 7k miles on the car with the mods and bingo....blew a ringland...now im building the engine right.....but is was a very very expensive lesson.....dont listen to people telling you can do internals for a few thousand dollars...yes it can be done, but that assumes u can do everything urself. My engine build is at $12k parts and labor.
Get a new intake. Tune.
Get a new exhaust. Tune.
Get a new shift knob. Tune.
You forgot about the air freshener. Gotta get a good tune after that aswell
+Vicious Nutricious lol true.
+Vicious Nutricious Yes. Air freshener = tune
+Nick Harrison Oh you washed your car? Tune.

I agree reason to stay out of boost is the theory of the metal of the turbo expanding under heat and giving more room to the rotor correct?
Was hoping to see this comment. Letting engine sit when cold starting doesn't help.
You got it all wrong.

Everything except the motorbike part, unless she really wants you gone, then maybe she would be happier
Although Subarus have millions of problems with them, it's just too hard not to love them

Good tips, except the warming up your car by idling 5-10 mins. It is better for your motor to warm it up running, just keep it below ~3500-4000 rpm. It will warm up faster and in the long run avoid unnecessary wear to the engine.

So running your motor up until operating temp isn’t very healthy. I warm my car up before I drive and have 225k on stock block and I drive it pretty hard.
The "highest octane available" only applies to high compression ratio motors and boosted motors, not all cars just btw for everyone
I didn't feel it was necessary to say that given the context of the video, but thank you for the input!
+Evan Shanks I just thought I'd add that for people who aren't really savvy to the mechanical side of cars so every doesn't hear "use highest octane possible" and start putting 93 in their 7:1 comp ratio N/A econoboxs. No disrespect intended, great video.

This was actually a lot more informative than I was expecting, well done!
I like how easily you explain things. Someone could've easily got all that information, and made a video for only rocket scientists to comprehend. :)

Boost at lower RPMs can lead to bending rods and such, so only up the boost if you have a map to go with it.
what's a map?
Samuel Pong lol like a tune?
what he says and talks about is very important for subaru sti's
wow awesome video! very helpful! I have similar mods and was wondering if you could make a video on the access port and what are good gauges to have and what to look for! love the videos!
Togue Tuning is located right near me! Awesome video, learned some stuff!
DON'T DO 5th or 6th GEARS PULLS!!!!
+Blake's Garage What if I've already maxed out 4th???
Why?
+Joe Oggier I think he means when you're in the lower rpms
+Blake's Garage This can not be said often enough. Not just EJ motors, but all motors hate this.
Joe Oggier Well your good then just don't go 60mph and mash the throttle in 5th or 6th. DOWNSHIFT!!
definitely keeping all these tips in mind. Thanks Evan!
the ppl in our cali ST community say that shell is really bad gas but since you have 93 oct over there probably it isnt as bad as cali 91 oct
I don't know much about subaru's but I love them. I just got a 2015 sti and now I'm scared lol
well, any issues? hahah
thanx for the tips bro for real a learn a lot with this 8 min video!
Intro to EJ motors, brought to you by Evan Shanks. Great advise all around.
What’s the best way to build the ej to get rid of the ring land failure?
Hey do you think its necessary tune just for a down pipe with the stock engine ? Or I can just install the down pipe and no tune couse I know its exhaust not intake that's my question a lot of people say yes some others no
Wow these cars are so damn delicate. Unbelievable. LSX FTW
cheers.. for this info mate that down shift part answer my question ...
Don't buy a 2.5L ej255/257 and you won't get ringland failure :)
Jared Tate yup kids stick to your honda the sti was not made for you
Jared Tate 3500 CAD for an ej207 (jdm sti engine) with ecu and the whole engine swap kit
yep, ej207. the ej257 is crap stock
I'm interested....I have EJ207 now; where can I get this for $3500, thanks.
Randy Sauder it was a refurbished one being sold in montreal. I think v8
can you do a video on air to oil separators
i wish i could get an access port for my baja turbo. and also i wish i had simple bolt on stuff that i could do to my car. thankfully haven't had to get my motor rebuilt yet and im at 174k. i have had to get head gaskets done to my car and also a new tubro but those where above 160K.
1.) Fart
2.) Fart
3.) Vroom
I was farting right before I read this comment
Those tips may help but will not address the root of the problem: Subaru's OE ring gaps are way too tight for a turbo engine with a ~4" bore; ring lands break when the top ring gap closes up and the ring seizes to the bore. Most tips like these help because in the end they reduce combustion chamber temperatures and thus the expansion of the compression rings. The best way to stave off ring land failure is to remove the pistons and file-fit the gaps to more appropriate values. And if you're going that far into the engine you might as well put in forged pistons with decent rings and proper ring gaps.
What if I put a Nameless axle back as my only mod? Should I still be worried about ringlands?
Thanks for the tips mate. It's really helpful.
Words of wisdom by Evan shanks... And now poetry by Gary
Are you planning to review the dash cam? or quickly talk about if you like it?
Hey man, good video. I know its a little late in the game, but any chance you can post that article link to Togue Tuning you mentioned?
Very helpful. The car and those wheels look proper with a mean stance. nice.
Thank you!
Ring land, ring land, what you gonna do when I come for you
Three ways to avoid ring land failure.
1. Buy a 2015+ wrx
2. Wait until the STI gets the FA engine.
3. All of the above
KALI1080 yeah but I said "too small to make power efficiently"
I mean if you compare a 3 liter engine with a 2 liter one, which one is easier to squeeze more power out of it?
Kiliab Gonzalez really man the sti won’t have fa20 only wrx
Bisofication maybe it name going to be fj25
Very good, detailed video. Thanks a lot bro
So awesome just wacthinh your subaru vlogs now look at you growing more power evan
Love this style of video, Evan!
Man with feul I'm lucky enough to able to get a full tank of 100oct for $80, my old car ran 95 or 98 and same size tank and at $130-140
Wish i saw this video 1 month ago.. My 2005 wrx recently started knocking from the engine and completely blew up last week. 😞
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big sad. The EJ205 is a good engine
Togue Tuning did my blobeye they are one of the best protuners in Canada
Blobeye? Is that like a modified bugeye? ; ) Or is it the canuck way to say bugeye.......................
Great tips for pretty much any turbo car.
The thing is, is it worth getting one if I don't know how to do the maintenance myself and there aren't specialized shops for subarus near ?
i gave up on subies it was hard to keep it on the street wihtout babying the car
I drive a '10 WRX, wondering if 1500rpm on 5th gear is too low? I don't floor it by any means but just wondering if that would means its lugging at that rpm
09 wrx, 60psi in cylinder 4, 65 in 2 😅
NooOoOOoooooOooOo
+Evan Shanks yeah, thanks crappy ej motors
I had to rewatch the video. I could't concentrate on what you were saying with that beautiful red reacecar behind you. +2 views lol
Subie_ Will_IV i agree..that red is absolutely beautiful 🔥🔥
this was just what I was looking for thanks man!!
Great tips man! Excellent things to keep the blub blub blub blub alive.
The tune should be in its own category IMO.
