Side note, a failed compression test is not an indication of only ringland failure. Low compression can be attributed to leaking valves. A leak down test will tell you where the problem is. During a leak down if you hear air coming from the intake manifold (Intake valves) Hear it moving through the exhaust (exhaust valves) If you pop the oil cap off and Hear it through there (ring issues) You'll also see varying values across diffrent compression testers. Typically you'll want no more than a 10% variation between cylinders.
Your “1st love” is the Subie? No love for the Speed3? HAHA! Just taking the piss mate. I’ve been following your vlog since those S3 days and I can’t tell you how much you have helped me. I was a complete numpty when it comes to mechanics. So much more confident and capable these days. All thanks to CA & CS.
Hey cam I would check your injectors for the misfire. Have them cleaned or get new ones. Most people skip right over that on Subarus and tend to avoid beliving it’s your injectors. Definitely check them
Your so good at making content, it’s ridiculous that amount of quality you put into each video. Sick Wrx keep making videos just bought a shirt yesteday
I bought the Maddox test kit from Harbor Freight and had to use the adapter for it to fit. I did cylinders 1 & 2. 1st one was at 160, 2nd was at 160. Went to move on to 3 and then realized the adapter was left behind in the 2nd cylinder. Talk about a heart attack. I was luckily able to get it out after an hour of messing with it. Lesson learned, make sure your adapter fitting is on the tester TIGHT and not just hand tight. Lol @ me
120ish Psi seems about right. most tuners told me as long as all cyl are about 10% from eachother its good. No massive compression deviations unless they are all like 80 psi or anything below 90 but also a worn tool can come up with low compression numbers. My 07 STi had Ringland with 100k miles was 120 on all cyl but 4 and it was 60. I did a leak down and all passed with 90/95% while cyl 4 was 20%. Type Ra short block here I come.
I just got a compression test done today at a local Subi shop and all 4 cylinders were exactly at 130 and they were tested 3 times each! At least I know my engine is healthy. The owner said they are more looking at how close all 4 numbers are to each other rather than the actual numbers, unless they’re super low.
I too was experiencing misfires. I’m running a similar setup and flex fuel and run almost exclusively E85. Well I changed the spark plugs and a couple weeks later started having random misfires and a rough idle. Tried swapping to 93 to clean the lines and didn’t notice any difference. Ran the tank empty added Redline fuel system treatment to it and within 10 miles it completely cleared up!
Bought my STI, put about $6K into it, found your channel and saw the struggles you were having with Ringland failure. I ended up selling after a few months of ownership and I thank you for detailed videos. You saved me massive headaches and a a boat load of money. These motors don’t handle the heat well even with supporting mods to cool them down (I'm also in Gilbert). Cheers.
Fuel pump fuse is an unsafe way to go about cranking the engine for compression testing, unplug the crank sensor or trigger the starter directly using a starter tester.
I did the drivers side on a hot engine and got 150 psi in cylinder 2 and 4 and next day after on a cold engine cylinder 1 and 3 was 150 psi aswell. I'm not sure why that's the case but I'm guessing maybe I did it wrong ? If all cylinder are around 150 psi it sounds too good to be true
Disabling fuel pump and then cranking engine is a bad idea! (I think, correct me If I'm wrong). Some fuel will be injected into engine washing down the cylinders with Fuel - bad! Disconnect crank position sensor connecter or hold gas pedal down all the way (WOT - wide open throttle) which will also disable fuel. also: Most low compression issues are due to a valve leaking - usually the exhaust valve. If you squirt a little oil into the low cylinder and do the compression test again, and the compression comes up, then its the rings not sealing. If the compression does not come up, then its a valve.
Is the magnaflow exhaust still on the car? Can you do a pov/drive-by video? There is next to ZERO reference information on that exhaust other than your premier video and magnaflow doesn't seem to give a shit about it being in the market :(
Love the gc8. I have a 93 wrx. Super fun but still trying to chase down this misfire. It goes away almost completely when engine has been driven a bit and is hot but when cold barely drives. Does this sound like a ring or valve failure?
I don’t think the problem is that big. But it’s a problem. It’s not stopping me from getting the sti you just have to be mindful of how you’re driving and always get a tune

lmao....
I'm about to sell my scion frs I'm waking up to the truth as well

Great tips! Trying this out with my wrx this week, hopefully it goes well!
I just blew my ‘17 Sti up a few weeks ago thanks for the video Cameron it helped me out!!
Tuned? Want to go up to an sti but seriously worried about reliability. It will be kept stock and all freeway ( daily driver ).
@@tonynittoli4792 it was completly stock with 72k miles bro I ended up selling it
I'm so excited to see the VA chassis back. I totally thought you had sold it
I missed this car, looking forward to more :D
THANK YOU! I'd like to check my VA soon but i wanted a guide.

great quick vid! super useful!!!!
Aren't you supposed to open the throttle all the way when doing comp test?
Do you need to remove all the spark plugs at the same time or 1 at the same time?
Is the magnaflow exhaust still on the car? Can you do a pov/drive-by video? There is next to ZERO reference information on that exhaust other than your premier video and magnaflow doesn't seem to give a shit about it being in the market :(
This test have to be with the other 3 sparks in place?
Hi love the video I’m have a misfire on cylinder 2&4 so ordered a kit to test it . Did you ever solve your misfire ?
Now show us how to do a leakdown! Nice video btw
Maybe for the purpose of content but if a compression test checks out there's no point to go further with a leak down test
Got a wrx with clutch fork needed to be replaced! Are you willing to do it of course with shooting me a quote
Do you remove all plugs before running the test or do you pull them one at a time?
Hey man I’ve been inspired by your gti build so I looking at getting one did or are you going to do the dsg stage 2 tune
Love the gc8. I have a 93 wrx. Super fun but still trying to chase down this misfire. It goes away almost completely when engine has been driven a bit and is hot but when cold barely drives. Does this sound like a ring or valve failure?
Why don’t you make videos on the va sti ..
Try a leak down test next. Would make a good video as well!
Got ringland in my 2015 wrx😪, will get a hawkeye one day but i learned this after it happened 😭😭
Can you do a vacuum leak video?
Hi
Hey can you make a video on what a girlfriend is? I don’t think I have ever heard of that Subaru part before 👍
Again??
Will you come do mine. Off 19th and bell 🤙🤙🤙
Idk if you have teeth implants but if they’re not you have some of the whitest and most straight natural teeth iv ever seen
Ringland is 100% why I decided to buy a 2019 wrx and not an sti. I think if you buy an STI you should day 1 buy a engine from IAG
I don’t think the problem is that big. But it’s a problem. It’s not stopping me from getting the sti you just have to be mindful of how you’re driving and always get a tune
Wrx over sti? That was a mistake lol
Just say you can't maintain a car
How bout you get an extended warranty for 100k miles and keep your engine stock with oil changes on time.
