The Problem with 30 Super Carry...

    30 Super Carry was designed with concealed carry in mind and Jeremy thinks there is one problem with this cartridge...
    So what’s the problem with .30 Super Carry? Well, he believes it’s the quantity of available firearms chambered in this caliber. Currently, only 4 guns are chambered in .30 super carry: S&W Shield EZ, S&W M&P, Nighthawk Custom 1911, and the Hi-Point Carbine.

Was going to get one but it’s the 6.7 inch OAL and not the 6.1 inch OAL version. If it had been the 6.1 inch version no question I would’ve purchased one. would be a great option for my wife who has poor wrist, strength, and arthritis.

    I see two problems only one of which is an issue with cartridge itself.
    1. It is spec'ed at too high of a pressure. IMO what we needed is something in between the 32 acp and what we got. That is a 32 that could handle the heavier 100 grain bullet but with significantly less blast and recoil than the 9mm. Sort of like a 32 H&R for the bottom feeders (AKA Autoloaders). So say 100 gr at about 950-1000 fps. If it can be downloaded to this level and still function reliably we may be OK.
    2. This is just weapon related. All of the available platforms that I am aware of are striker fired. A solid DA/SA hammer fired pistol (preferably not plastic) would be great especially in a Bersa Thunderer size category would make it much more tempting.

    Picked up my Smith & Wesson Shield Plus in 30 Super Carry this weekend. Cannot wait to get it out to the range! I see so much potential in this round. It is essentially a 32 ACP Magnum which I always loved the 32 acp. • @WarhammerWeekEndTimes
    @WarhammerWeekEndTimes Год назад +50

    The lack of firearms that are currently available for 30SC is massive, however, if the price of the round is good and more guns get developed, 30SC could obsolete 380 entirely and may even challenge 9mm as an alternative. We could be living at a the turning point in history in terms of bullet paradigm and the few firearms that are available today might be important history pieces in 20-30 years. Imagine handing down your pistol to a grandson or daughter and telling them "This was one of the first models ever developed for the 30SC." Neat time to be alive

      That's one thing that might doom this cartridge. The ammunition is priced way to high. As inflation has become such a serious factor, many people will automatically gravitate to guns with much less ammunition expenses. If they had some foresight and had priced it the same as 9mm, it might very well have attracted buyers. Also, they should have brought out 2 different weight rounds in both fmj, and defense. So, it seems apparently, Federal wanted to start recouping development and machinery expenses as fast as possible. Nothing like "shooting yourself in your own foot", so to speak ! 😮😅

      @@user-rn9sb8wu4h For real, there's a lot of cartidges that on their own, have really superior ballistics and merit, but once you add in the logistics factor of manufacturing, all the steps before production in addition to cost, you have good rounds that don't catch on because they are prohibitively expensive. 458 socom is a fantastic round but no one is going to realistically stockpile it in mass quantities because it is so expensive.

    I have to state emphatically - the idea that 30 supercarry was better than OR out to replace 9mm was NEVER the idea. It is slightly softer than 9mm but gets 2 more rounds into the same magazine space...this IS a good idea. The place where 30 Supercarry SHINES is that it BLOWS THE DOORS off 380acp in the ballistics department AND adds 2 more rounds to the magazine in the same space. THIS round actually makes 380 OBSOLETE immediately - ESPECIALLY for for folks with older , weak hands OR lady shooters that are not affectionate toward 9mm - MY WIFE being one of them !!! The 380 is a practically a whimp , and we ALL know it...but the 9mm is little stout in the recoil department and this SPECIFICALLY WHY 380 has such a huge market share. When you consider slightly less recoil than 9mm BUT WAAAAY better ballistics AND more rounds in the magazine 30 Supercarry becomes THE HANDS-DOWN WINNER !! THIS is what is was made for and should be CELEBRATED as such - instead - keyboard warriors with size issues keep comparing it to the cartridge it was NEVER INTENDED to replace !?! I do not understand all these comments here that completely miss the point - it was made as a much better round than the extremely popular , but slightly anemic , 380...it is NOT a "snob" round nor is it a gimmick to "fleece" people for more money. When properly understood by those who can think - instead of criticized by those who can't be bothered to , it is actually quite amazing for the role it was intended.

If 30sc were to catch on, prices would lower and be more available. The biggest problem with the 30 (actually 32) Super Carry - the 9 mm. While the 30 SC increases capacity by a whopping 2 bonds. the cartridge has 80% of the energy of the 9 mm +P, at 50k PSI, which is a lot more than any 9 mm loading. Plus the ammo is more expensive and less available. So no reason for the 30 SC to catch on. Federal should have attempted to improve the 32 ACP and get rid of the rim for more reliable feeding. The resulting round would have worked in CCW pocket pistols and offer more capacity than the 380.

    Sounds like a solution in search of a problem. Although I am intrigued by this new cartridge, the only real data we have to date is from Federal, the manufacturer of the cartridge itself. 9mm has been around a very long time and is proven. Although I do like the extra capacity that the 30 SC offers in the safe platform, if there is no discernible difference between the recoil of the 9mm and the 30 SC, I think I will stick with the 9mm. And, for the Smith and Wesson Shield 9mm, since Smith made the Equalizer, with a 15 round capacity magazine that fits the 9mm Shield, I will carry that as a backup magazine. Capacity problem basically neutralized. Lastly, the price could be a deterrent as mentioned. And, we all know the more you practice with your firearm, the better you should be in a, God forbid, gunfight. More money = more ammunition = more practice.

    Stick with the tried and proven (and available just about any place on this earth) 9mm. The recoil difference between 9mm and 30 Super Carry is minimum, if not, negligible. Practice, practice, practice, and that 20% difference in ammo capacity won't even matter if you're accurate with your platform. In my honest opinion, the 30 Super Carry is not worth the hype. It's too expensive and the 9mm does what the 30 Super Carry's supposed to do.

    So obviously because it's a new round getting a whole bunch of guns to be chambered in it at this stage is not going to be easy. Especially because we are still recovering from a severe economic crash thanks to the government and what happened during covid. So it's going to be a little slower than normal.
    However in my personal opinion when you put the 30 Super Carry and 9 mm side-by-side as a round the 9 mm will be the 30 super carrier any day of the week. However where it has its greatest potential is in capacity and when you take the same model of gun, for example the Smith & Wesson shield plus, chambered in 9 mm and 30 Super Carry side by side they are the exact same gun. But in the case of the 30 super carry gun you have a 5% increase in lead going down range, you have a 20% increase in capacity, and you have approximately a 45% increase in power. This is can all differ between general purpose ammunition and things like self-defense ammunition. But it's pretty close to the same across the board. So the 9 mm will always outperformed the 30 Super Carry round her round. But when you have an increase in capacity to the point where the overall pressure and weight supersedes the 9mm of an equivalent magazine size the 30 super carrier will beat the 9 mm. So in places like Idaho Wyoming Montana and Texas where you do not have magazine restrictions the 3 Super carry should continue to grow in its popularity. Unfortunately in places like New York and California and Oregon where you have magazine restrictions you're not going to see it reach its full potential. I think it will still be popular in handgun models like the Smith & Wesson EZ because obviously the whole reason why somebody gets an EZ is because it's easier to handle anyways. So if you can get a more powerful cartridge in a gun that is already chambered in a cartridge like 380 and be comfortable with it anybody is going to want that

    The "70% miss rate" is literally just how many bullet hit suspects in a year vs how many bullets were fired in a year. When you actually look at the statistics more closely, the miss rates are massively skewed by a small number of confrontations that involve large numbers of shots fired. Cops are not somehow terrible shots because sometimes they get into "shoot outs" with armed suspects.

    Opinion:
    .380 is only attractive because it an be used in a very tiny, very concealable pistol,but it kinda sucks ballistically. If your P.O.U. values cocealability more than ballistic effectiveness (ankle gun for a policemans backup, for example) the tradeoff makes sense.
    9mm is adequate ballistically (thoughnot earth-shattering) and is still concealable, but is a bit much for a true pocket pistol.
    The SC still has unimpressive ballistics, despite the improvements over. 380, but is chambered in pistols of 9mm size.
    Isn't that the worst of both worlds?

  • @johnshields9110
    @johnshields9110 9 месяцев назад +1

    The penetration performance of the 30 Super Carry is equal or better than the 380. The 100 gr JP hits as hard as the 9mm, and travels even a little farther in ballastic jell too. As a smaller 'trail gun' it should be a wonder weapon; tough enough to deal with black bears. As a city carry weapon, deadly HP's with expanded bullet count, 11-13l rounds. The thugs driving to the scenes in car, will be getting the last 1/2 of the magazine, while the perps will be getting the front half! The power level, package, and concealibility of the S&W Shields +, crosses all those areas. That's what I want!

  • @michaelchen8643
    @michaelchen8643 3 месяца назад +1

    The problem was 30 super carry is that the firearm and ammunition industry is trying to create a product that looks innovative, but is only just different, and the market is saturated with enough legacy capability that there’s no place for something like this semi automatic round that looks like the 7.65 cartridge used by the French In their 1935 pistol and submachine gun
    In some way, the 327 federal, which is a functional recreation of the 32-20 Winchester cartridge offers more recreational use performance than the 30 Super carry
    There is also an undercurrent of intent by some people to create in my opinion, a cartridge that people who want to restrict them we can say well look we’re going to restrict certain military caliber, wink wink nod nod and allow you to have this special new cartridge
    This is conjecture on my part, but you can look at other countries around the world where they try to restrict ammo to the civilian population, as they don’t have a second amendment
    Right now in the courts attempts to restrict ammo being argued
