You can be both but I highly suggest such a player to write down notes about custom abilities.
Dragoon Jump, use the same rules as a mounted charge attack, you don't get advantage for having the high ground. For every 10ft you jump up add 1d6 damage to recoil for yourself and to the attack IF it hits. (To increase risk and rewards).
Rules about bracing with say a lance to deal bonus damage to charging enemies applies since we are using mounted charge attack rules.
If a silent, mounted charge attack (you're falling not running) can get advantage so can the jump attack (still no high ground bonus). Yes if you're super loud when jumping off the ground or yelling like a maniac while falling. They're going to notice you jumped high and falling towards them.

well, i tried to make a Valkyr (warframe) port at one point in 4e. that went horribly wrong. i have since made many custom classes that were great. did what they were intended to, without being expressly better than book characters at anything in particular. one of my favorite examples of that was my dark paladin class. (based on lolth) they could in theory outlast a paladin in an extended scrap, but had less actual health than a paladin, requiring some offensive capabilities to shore up your defenses.
edit: damn, after seeing some of the ideas that people actually attempted to put through as "balanced" i dont feel nearly as bad about how badly i screwed designing valkyr. at least i recognized the problem without actually bringing her to a table.

It was not really homebrew, but it did have unintended effect. I played a bard with a god complex. He got the god complex from slipping down some stairs.(backstory stuff) that tried to recruit member into his religion. Well, turns out I was good at it and became a demigod of lies. Retired him after that. Now, he has preacher that lie to everyone. Paladins who are forbidden to tell any truths.

My friends and I are beginners at DND and have decided to allow homebrew content. I have a cool custom background and a homebrew spell that is basically shape rock, but with water and I control the state of matter. I have a few others, like a vine trap that I usually set up right before a rest so anything that sneaks up on us gets tangled and we are alerted.
My friend on the other hand, his character has a background that would be longer than this video (slight hyperbole) and only has one spell that gets upgraded every level. They basically are able to mess with organic compounds and chemistry and pi and sigma bonds, whatever that means. He also had an idea for another character that basically had cube powers that control times, space, the four elements, the psyche and some other stuff. Both of these could almost definitely break the game beyond comprehension
Also, not broken, just a thing I though to mention. My other friend, who wanted to dm, also wanted to have a character play on our team. He makes the character a dog who is a druid that was turned into a dog by him not wanting to get taken to prison or something for this thing he made as a scientist. He is a druid because he wants to eventually stay a human as long as he wants.
There are some notes for ya, feel free to ask for our backstories, not my complex nerd friends, and how we met each other

Enter my friend's character: The Deathborn Tiefling of the Improved School of Necromancy
First level, she had a racial ability that, if she dropped to 0 HP, she would transform into a ball, and could be revived to full health with a simple DC 10 Arcana Check. This would cause a Fireball centered on herself to go off (Ignoring anybody she specifies), dealing 20d6 Fire damage.
She also had a pet that she designed, which was a sort of mix between a Cadaver Collector and a Zombie. Basically, any corpses she didn't raise could be eaten by this pet, which gave it +10 to its HP, an extra d6 to its damage rolls and a +1 to hit, permanently. This "pet" already had multiattack (2d6+3 per attack), an AC of 19 from armour plating, 100+ HP, and a ranged attack.
In addition the class had Animate Dead and Create Undead prepared as cantrips, the passive ability to be immune to any damage or debuffs caused by undead monsters, and an extra ability to use Large corpses to make Zombie Ogres or even goddamned Zombie Beholders over the course of a short rest.
Later on she'd get abilities to summon ANY undead she wishes, including Death Tyrants, Liches, Dracoliches and pretty much anything else she wants
Let's just say she's playing a NORMAL Tiefling School of Necromancy Wizard now.

Our DM had us rolling for our scores when we started using FantasyGrounds and we did screen sharing with him through the discord call. He also told us that if we rolled a 9 or lower we have to reroll that score as well as since we were all starting at level 3 he wanted us to at least have two scores with a +2 mod or more. Let's just say(since our DM has an accidental player kill streak) I've rolled scores for 7 back up characters during bouts of odd inspiration, so I am well acquainted with how to roll scores at least on FantasyGrounds and sticking with the first roll as long as it was 10 or greater.

I've always hated the rolling for scores method. Even without people faking it, you tend to end up with someone having absurd scores, and the rest of the party ending up with fairly meh scores.
Not that it's impossible to still make a campaign with that situation fun, but, I've found many DM's aren't the best at dealing with wildly varying power levels -- And it's typically not fun when a DM focuses too hard on making things a challenge for the higher end, leaving the lower end with very little they can contribute.

I find it gets really annoying when everyone has similar stats and it forces everybody to be alright at everything which can lead to boring gameplay. Rolling for scores makes it so you have to actually get creative with your character choices and come up with innovative ways to address situations instead of just counting on the fact that your stats are so average you can just roll your way through everything.

They're not breaking the game, they're either working to make enough Molotov cocktails to always have enough prepared for any encounter, or the DM is giving them Molotov cocktails and breaking his own campaign

To be fair, it sounds like they were using cheap components and no proficiencies to create something pre-existing. That stuff should have been unreliable as heck. Bad roll when attacking? Too bad, that thing just blew up in your hand. Same for creating them in combat - doing something this complicated in a stressful situation in a short time should have an ability check attached to hit with a pretty juicy dc, and failure by a certain amount would again be bad news.
There is being clever and there is trying to abuse/cheat the system.

I wanted to have my fighter try to alter the Boom Hammer so it can work as a small portable forge... I succeeded and the DM ruled that I could use Only my Prof when using this... now that doesn't sound that bad until I asked for clarification... I could add my prof x4... needless to say I never failed a smithing check when making that hammer. Doesn't help that I also got a feat that let me make +2 and +3 armor/weapons. When I added that kind of hammer to my world I just gave it a +2 to smithing checks. Still good but no where near as broken.

If you have any rogues in your party, I'd recommend asking them how they feel about that before you implement it. They already have a class feature that lets them take no damage on successful dexterity saving throws (along with only half damage on failed dex saves), so giving everybody a similar ability might make them rightfully feel like they're losing a bit of what makes their class special. If you do implement it, I'd encourage you to rewrite the rogue's Evasion feature to give them an extra bonus to make up for the part you gave to everybody: maybe make their dex saves exempt from the nat 1 rule, give them a small bonus to saving throws, or extend their "half damage on failed save" to all saving throws, not just dex.

    • @caiusdrakegaming8087
      @caiusdrakegaming8087 4 года назад

@@quasimofo6811 Not really needing to change it. A nat 20 is only a 5% chance of happening. Rogues just got to pass a save, not crit succeed it. They still get no damage much more often than this rule allows everyone else, even if that rule goes for all saving throws to half damage while rogues only get it on dex throws.
Example: Say the party need to do a dex save on an AoE attack like fireball. DC 10 save. Rogue's the only one with a +3 dex bonus, everyone else has a +0. The rogue would have a 65% chance of taking no damage, 30% of taking half, and a 5% chance of taking max damage with this rule, while everyone else has the 5% chance of max damage taken on top of 45% chance of taking half, 45% chance of taking the full rolled damage(not max), and a 5% chance of taking no damage. Evasion still makes the rogue the best at dodging damage, even with that rule. Changing the feature, or even turning it into a completely new feature, would end up making it a little too broken. Rogues that take it are near impossible to harm if they have decent luck. Extending it to all saves would make them potentially immortal.

He was a rogue (arcane trickster) and barbarian multiclass. Fortunately the campaign ended before he got barbarian level 2 and could use reckless attack on top of his already busted character. Speaking of busted, I forgot to mention the broken part: having four arms allowed him to quad-wield. This robot was a big metal sphere some gnome made which had 8 extendable arms, each with a different type of weapon attached to the end. This meant, according to him, that he got 8 individual attacks each turn... we played for two sessions, during which he did 90% of all damage dealt and made sure all the rest of us lost all interest in the game for years until we realized that was just a bizarre outlier instance, and not how the game is usually played...

Hey Brian! Thank you, and the whole channels team for all of the fantastic dnd content! I The ‘broken’ character story I have is from a campaign that I’m currently playing. It’s also my very first campaign! So, here goes! I was encouraged to create a home-brew for this horror campaign that my friend, a seasoned DM, has spent a while planning. This is actually part 4 of a 5 part series that is going to end in a “End Game” style final showdown with all of the characters from all of the stories being present at level 20 against... whatever god forsaken thing he’s cooked up for us to fight. Anyways, for this first campaign I decided to make an alchemist based on a certain anime where the alchemist has a metal arm... but the characters actions are based on what knowledge I actually have one the materials I’m using and very difficult rolls. The ‘broken’ part is that, through the allowances of my overly gracious DM, I have been able to pull off many little improvements that have made avoiding party killing bosses and other encounters easy. We found a shop with a suit of armor that could change to a gas and back to a solid at will. I asked, “is the armor enchanted, or is the metal of the armor enchanted?” He didn’t even think about it and answered, “the metal.” I watched the gears on his head turn for a second then come to a stop. I transmuted the metal into lock picks and gave one to each party member. Just activate, insert, deactivate, and open. Or even better, I have opened a deep ass hole under the last 4 creatures he has thrown at us. The bottom of the hole has very long sharp spikes and then i seal the hole back up. Completely defeating the encounter. Ive made weapons for the party as well as tortured enemies for locations that we should have never received. I even used alchemy to help a party member persuade the leader of a violent cult that the god they worship demanded that he be the new leader and he kill himself. I made the ground shake, a deep fog form and the braziers ignite and the flames to rage. The DM is rethinking being so accommodating to this noob.

I kind of have one, but it more of my DM's house rule. My DM rules healing spells harm undead and necrotic spells heal them. Well I made a cleric that I was planning to join in the campaign, and was looking though spell to have my character ready. One spell caught my eye, and it's a official spell. Here is where it gets interesting though I was reading it over when I remembered the house rule. The spell in question is Beacon of Hope. For those who don't know the spell it give advantage on wisdom and death saving throws, and causes all values of healing to max out with out rolling. Well this is where I started reading in between the lines. Since my DM house rule is about healing I went and asked about if his house rule works on the spell. If an undead was affected by Beacon of Hope and took a necrotic school of magic damage then the spell would do max healing, and if the undead took a healing spell instead the spell would do max damage in harming the undead. Then I asked if the undead is affected like that then would the same hold true for the living; if the living under the effect was hit with a necrotic spell then the spell would do max amount of damage in harming, and if affected by a healing spell the the value is maxed in healing. Meaning that Beacon of Hope could be used to maximize the values of necrotic schools of magic and radiant schools of magic which. Of course this has issues as in the range is still 30 feet, it's a concentration spell, once active there is no he/she doesn't take max damage it's either on or off, any individual affected has the Wisdom saving throw / death saving throw, and requires a bit of set-up. Plus the spell never says anything about the source of magic coming form only the caster; it just says the values are at max. Which means allies can make use of this as well as enemies. So using it has some high risk with equally high reward. After my DM reviewed the spell and thought over my question came to the same conclusion as well. Of course is a spell that work far better with a group, but it's me looking at a official spell and remembering my MDs rules, and reading in between the line. I look forward to trying that out.

I had a game where this guy played a homebrew race (spirit sword) and homebrew class (Berserker). He said the class was just a crazier version of Barbarian. At level 3, this guy got to make 3 attacks per turn, each dealing 5d6 damage, and he had +14 to hit. He got to project his body anywhere within a certain radius (basically a free teleport through walls), he could uncurse any magic items that were possessed, and his only downside was that he suffered insanity that would make him more murderous towards others. I hated this guy so much.

In a bit of a crossover between videos here, I got an idea for how to balance a Jump/Dive Attack.
-Higher Jump = Higher risk (-1 to hit per ten feet down)
-Damage Bonus based on height, but fall damage is still a factor (Attacker would take less-than-normal, but still greater than 0 fall damage, say 1d4 per ten feet, if it hits and the target takes 1d4 extra damage per ten feet. Attacker takes full fall damage on a miss.)
-Bonus when using a reach weapon, since Dragoons favor spears over all else. (Reduced to-hit penalty, reduced fall damage on miss, and/or increased bonus damage on hit.)
-No mid-air invulnerability, if it's a two round action. (Sure, it can't reach with a melee weapon, but the target is still vulnerable to ranged attacks and flying/jumping opponents.)
-Perhaps allow an 'improved' version with reduced penalties to hit, maybe allowing for the attack to send all fall force to the target if it hits.

Hearing your very pleasant narrations has made me feel more at ease during this period. ended up forcing myself to cry the other day because i had been feeling down for half a week it burned but it worked. Back on topic In pathfinder i tried home-brewing a DBZ monk with the monk Ki Arrow for the blast, a full round Ki charge to not be useless and Floating Breath with Wind Jump to fly. I programming it into a character builder Then i was told about the kineticist and realised how broken my build was.

Molotovs are one of the most common home brew items out there, and honestly any DM that allows home brew should get ready to accommodate them.
Personally I find that monster variety can deal with that well enough. Have some fire-resistant enemies, and have some damage sponges that don’t really care if they get a little scratch from fire every turn.

Had a one shot raid where everyone was 7th level. Player was a tabaxi monk
You know, the one with the speed boost?
Player insisted that they could chain the tabaxi speed boot between turns. Even though I didn't have or ever read Volo's guide, I knew there was something fishy about that so I asked them if that was all there as to the rule, twice. He insisted that was the case.
We finished up in about an hour so it wasn't a big deal. He did however end up grabbing most of the spotlight by dashing around the battlefield with 150 ft of movement a turn with mobile. Naturally after the game I looked up the race.
Sure enough, you have to spend a turn not moving to get the use of that feature back.

In a campaign a while ago, I played a human ranger “Reggie, the Mailman”. It’s been long ago enough that I can’t remember the specifics of his build, but he knew Thorn Whip and a few other spells, had a bow he had proficiency with, and could attack multiple times a turn. He also had a wolf animal companion that could attack the same turn. He was so broken, that he utterly destroyed several Were-rat guys one occasion, and also almost one shot a Basilisk. It was bad enough the DM got complaints because the other players weren’t able to do much when Reggie was around. So basically, it became a plot point that Reggie had transcended the mortal plane and was now a mailman for the gods. He would occasionally deliver messages to us.

The jump ability "jumping off screen, waiting a turn, and skewering the enemy into the ground" is from Final Fantasy IX and that went to Freya, a Dragoon. You get her early on in the story before fighting Kuja. If it's in other games I've only played FFIX that had this ability. The DM should have rejected it.

    • @robinbrown6530

FF3 had a dragoon class. FF4 had Kain, the Dragoon. FF5 had the Dragoon Class (not that great but mostly because most everything was busted in some way and the Dragoon was just fair). FF6 had Dragoon boots that changed Fight to Jump and an Esper(summon) that made your whole party use the Jump command. FF7 had Cid who was based off the Dragoon but he did not have this exact mechanic. FF9 had Freya that you mentioned. FF10 had Kimahri but, like Cid, different mechanics. FF tactics had the Dragoon class(again outclassed for being too fair). FFT advanced had Dragoons but again were a bit too fair.
Generally the issue with the class theme is that when balanced its subpar and when not balanced its good but only in an exploitable way. But this is when dealing with Video Games that have limitations with code. As a DM in a Pen and Paper RPG which is fluid and subject to modifications I would not have rejected the idea of a dragoon. Instead, assuming I had the time to invest in it, I would have sat down with the player and simply told them that the character they proposed would not work as a straight port from video game to P&P. We would have to adapt a Dragoon to the D&D mechanics with the a few rules. One, I(the GM) have the final say on anything. Two, it may need to be amended in between sessions or even mid session if its really problematic. Last but not least, they would always need to be prepared to role up a new character if we just can't get the balance right as I won't compromise the integrity of the table for a single player. These are rules that can be used for any type of homebrew and I find them quite useful. Sometimes you come up with some crazy OP stuff but its fun and doesn't overshadow other players so it works. Other times you come up with something that breaks the game and you either fix it or you don't and move on. Most often though, you wind up with something that works but either is weaker or just less fun than other things at the table. It can be difficult to hit that right balance of power and flavor without breaking the game mechanics but I find that when you do get it right it is quite amazing. Plus it accomplishes two other things as a pure bonus. It forces players wanting to homebrew to respect the table and the GM while doing it(just a general good lesson for any player really) and it helps teach people why the game is designed the way it is. Its kind of like taking a car apart and putting it back together again in order to earn your first car. Not that anyone can just do that kind of thing anymore but the analogy fits.

My merchant character (bard who gives inspiration via infomercials) has a pet turtle with an enchanted shell that was homebrewed to hell and back. We set it up so that the shell could grow to the size of a small shack, and my bard used it as a portable market stand with everything inside being put in a pocket dimension whenever it shrunk. It lets my character maintain a merchant lifestyle while also being able to easily travel with the rest of the party.
It ALSO lets me access my entire shop's inventory without any hassle, including any health potions. We later balanced it by making most of the inventory be mundane jewelry, with some less useful magic stuff here and there.
As an aside, the shell also serves as an arcane focus.

My college GM ran a very long-running game of 3.5 where we were allowed to bring homebrew classes and races. A lot of people had a lot of ridiculous things (like a guy being able to play a young 'Rust' Dragon who had metal-disintegrating breath), but what ended up being the key to ending the game was my custom character class: the Sheriff. My character was essentially a gun-toting sheriff from a steampunk western, but I built the class to be fairly applied to any scenario. The Sheriff class was essentially a Paladin, but favoring Law instead of Good. Most of its flavor abilities were mirrors of Paladin abilities except designed to detect, ward, and punish Chaotic creatures, but I also gave it a set of abilities to enhance the Sheriff's keen eyesight; half of it was for spotting things and making skill checks, but the second half was designed as a combat utility. The Sheriff could make a Spot check against an enemy's AC in order to ignore part of their AC bonus (armor bonus, magic bonus, dex bonus, etc). Every few levels she would learn to ignore a different armor type, capping off at lvl 17 when she learned how to ignore Natural Armor. Also, because she was a gun-toting sheriff, she was wielding a .45 magnum revolver. I initially statted it to deal 1d10 damage, comparable to a longbow or heavy crossbow, but the DM, having fired off a Colt Anaconda before, *insisted* to change its damage to 2d6. Essentially, I was shooting Greatswords at people.
The final boss of the game eventually came; a great elder red dragon with all the bells and whistles you expect out of it. This being 3.5, the dragon had something like 50-ish AC, +20 saves, and a metric ton of HP. Even our party of homebrew gods with legendary magic items could scarcely deal any damage to the dragon, and things were looking like a possible wipe. My Sheriff, who at that point had something like a +30 spot check, was trying desperately to get a shot in, but her bullets just couldn't punch through the dragon's hide. With our options dwindling and our healing quickly running out, the Sheriff's initiative comes up. She tries her Spot check again, and with a natural 20 she finally overcomes the Dragon's AC. I choose to ignore the Dragon's Natural Armor, practically reducing his AC to 10 for the round. I let out a full round of six attacks, all six bullets finding their mark and a few even critting (crit confirms were easy against 10 AC), dealing over 800 damage in one fell swoop. Immediately the party rallied together, their morale renewed, and finished off the dragon for good.

Had a DM homebrew a new "casting system"
instead of using spell slots, he the casters had Mana, and would regenerate it over time... He also added a bunch of focus and armor/weapon materials that increased mana regen, gave mana-leech, and so on...
Anything that wasn't a caster was basically screwed, since that campaing were balanced around the stronger characters...
Was never able do convince him it was a bad idea... he realized his mistake when he made a Monk boss, and after 3 or 4 turns using his chi, the thing wasn't able to do anything else to the party, with unlimited shield and absorb element spells on every single reaction.

Last year I played in a homebrew campaign with some friends. Our dm did something story wise that allowed everyone to choose a second archetype for their starter class. I had an arcane trickster rouge who’s 2nd archetype was swashbuckler.
Almost every time I was able to get sneak attack in one form or another and then later my riot damage on top of that when I multi-classed into blood hunter. This doesn’t stop here though, my weapons were dagger like hidden blades (think assassins Creed) with a +3 bonus to them. I also was technically not holding a physical weapon which made it so much better both in and out of character as my rouge was also an alcoholic with the Tavern brawler feat.
I was a low Ac, high damage dealer

As a player, I received a magic item that consisted of six copper strings that each added one hit die of any thunder or sonic based spell they were in the range of, and an additional six made of flametouched iron that added the hit die in Fire damage. I could set them up on my metal harp, cast a level 2 shatter spell on them, and deal about 14/15d8 (can't remember if shatter does base 2d8 or 3d8). It was even more broken at first since it originally would have directly multiplied the spell's damage. This was the DM's idea, I had just wanted to have a magic instrument I didn't need my hands to play.

You know what, I normally blow off your inquiries as to how we, the audience, is doing, but you know what, I'm feeling it tonight.
Honestly, life is pretty good right now, but even when life is good it can still be stressful. I quit my job back in october and now I am self teaching myself how to code and design games. Its been quite the ride.
D&D has been going really well too. I'm running two weekly games, which is a lot but pretty dang rewarding and gives me a good reason to keep up with my sisters.
However, I don't know why, but I've been feeling pretty stressed recently and I think its because of relational stuff. 27 and single is getting old but the options out there are complicated at best. Not to mention I'm a little more "old fashioned" so I'm not really interested in hooking up to "take the edge off". Just been having a lot on my mind.
But hey man, thanks for asking. I know you are asking the faceless thousands, but its nice to know that someone cares, even if they don't really know who I am. I get the sense that if you did know me, you'd care just as much. Thanks

    - The idiot that managed to get himself thrown into hell at lvl 10, and through some unholy combination of nat1’s by the enemys and nat20’s by him managed to kill 5 cr:20 creatures at once, allowing him to get to a high enough lvl to teleport himself back to the material plane
-the time the party decided to just not fight my bbe... by casting 4 wish spells at once, leading to 1 ceasing to exist, the weave to rip apart, and every plane besides the material to be destroyed (that was a trip)
-“can i stab it with my salamander?” ( a warlocks familiar)
    - my dumbass managing to carry around ships cannon to shot a bone devil with, leading to me to get lit on fire while carrying a ton of gunpowder
    And so much more! Fun.

Our DM ruled that using dynamite was a one hit kill. Of course it's not that far off and seemed to be okay after a few careful uses, until the group decided to raid this bandit camp after finding a huge barrel of dynamite.
I had decided to sneak in with invisibility and try to rescue some hostages without fighting and surely he didn't mean for 6 people to clear a camp of over 200. Of course moments later several loud explosions go off and its just a horde of death everywhere.
Good news is we rescued some hostages. Bad news is some got separated into many pieces. Ever since then, he's made sure there's been a "shortage" of explosives around.

One DM created "Oil of Impact". When applied to an arrow or crossbow bolt, turns the projectile into a 2d6 explosive with 1d6 splash damage within 5 feet. Basically nitroglycerin. There was also a chance it would go off if you took more than 10 points of bludgeoning damage. One player cratered five of his own characters this way, before figuring out that the mini-rockets were more dangerous to him than they were to the enemies.
That same player, when it was his turn to DM, was very fond of bizarre homebrew creations. Such as the "Assassin Berserker", a barbarian with super-rage that could only be triggered by the literal taste of blood, and continued until the AB was dead. Not much of a drawback when it was an NPC class, and the NPCs would just bite their own tongues off as a free action.
Also from the same player/DM, a custom dungeon relying on sleep and dreams. Half the party had elven characters--immune to sleep. Suddenly it was no longer "sleep", but instead "forcibly induced restful unconsciousness".

I haven't yet done this, but I've always wanted to try homebrewing a "Race" based on The Beheaded from Dead Cells, basically a failed alchemic creation that lives by taking over decapitated bodies and using them as it's vessel, itself being a sort of energized plant-like mass. Based on the traits that the Beheaded itself has, I have a ton of ideas to make it fun to play yet still balanced, since The Beheaded cannot technically die but rather he can be made completely helpless if his reanimated body is slain. Perhaps he can only take over bodies if they're killed via decapitation? I don't know, haha. Loved the video man! I recently got into this game called Night Call, and I have to say it's touched me personally a lot and it made my night better. Can't wait for the next video!!

We had Mogar the drunken Half Giant Barbarian, Nilmora the Useless as a Druid, I was playing a Elan Psion that kept rolling ones for damage. But the centerpiece of the party, beyond all doubts, was Nilmora's pet: Rhylscorn the Scorn of Ryhls, a Roc. The damned bird was simultaneously our comic relief, the straight man, and mascot. It was also nearly unkillable, and before the campaign ended due to a player moving, was set to take monk levels and get permananced natural weapon buff spells... Though its still not as ridiculous as our 5E games plan to breed an army of Awakened Owlbears.
