Definitley Ascendant first ;)
Please Bound and the Broken 🙏😊
I would love to see you read Perdido Street Station!
Damnit Daniel you were supposed to recommend sun eater 😫😫😫
Once you've read that you step into The Scar followed by the Iron Council to complete the Bas-Lag trilogy :) About 2400 pages of great story and world building.
I tried to read that and it was so pretentious. Books like that shouldn't win awards. It's like watching a movie where the characters use words that 99.5% of people don't use. What's the point? It's just people with a high school mentality trying to Flex when all they're doing is just looking up words like anyone else could do.
Such a good book, I really enjoy China Mieville's work.
So many great reads featured here, and I'm incredibly honored that you have included The Way of Edan among them, Jay! I won't dare recommend anything further, but I'm keen to see what you make of Malazan (by your fellow Canadian!) and The Book That Wouldn't Burn.
You're in for a treat with Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. One of my favorite books of all time. I've read it 3 times.
Awesome to hear!! That makes me more excited to start it
If you want to read more Stephen King, 11/22/63 is one of my favorite books. I don’t cry often, but I cried like a baby at that ending.
A friend of mine gave me a hardback of that book, I think I'll definitely try to get to it this year!
Yes finally the Green Bone Saga, its such a great series, I read it a few years ago and still think about the characters! A great standalone I always recommend is Blood Over Bright Haven by M L Wang, one of my favourite reads from last year
I highly recommend The Bound and the Broken series
Looking forward to starting it!
I'm looking forward to start a lot of new books... especially The name of the wind
Hi 👋 I’m also a very slow reader, I want to enjoy my experience with reading not fast fast. Happy reading to you!! 🎉
Same here I can’t sit down for more than 30 min to an hr at a time I take me a week to read about 100 page I wish I could read just a little faster
@@grahamguy4656 too much other work to be done… lol 😂 thank you!!
slow readers unite! ✊🎉
Great video as always
For the rick riordan books, you may want to read heroes of olympus before trials Of Apollo, as it will be easier to follow
Oh good to know! Thanks, I'll make sure to start heroes of Olympus first :)
This thumbnail is too relatable. 🥴😭
I just finished The Will of the Many last night, and at least as far as new, ongoing series, it's absolutely up there in my most anticipated series now. I'm all in with the story.
I read quite a bit further into it now, and wow it really is such a great book! It's absolutely a new favorite of mine, will likely have it finished in a few days
Do keep in mind that you should read Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan before reading Trials of Apollo. If you do read Trails of Apollo first basically the whole Heroes of Olympus series will be spoiled as Trails of Apollo is a follow-up series. I do definitely recommend reading both as they (especially Heroes of Olympus) are probably even better than the original Percy Jackson series.
That's good information, thank you. I've only read his first Percy Jackson series (Lightning Thief) but I loved it and I wasn't sure where to go from there.
Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely make sure to read Heroes of Olympus next :)
Here are some fantasy books by Japanese authors you may like.
---
The Beast Player
by Nahoko Uehashi
Nahoko Uehashi is a famous fantasy writer in Japan who has won many awards and has had many of their works adapted into other media.
The Beast Player is the story of a girl who discovers how to communicate with great beasts and is wrapped up into a war between two territories of a kingdom.
---
Ascendance of a Bookworm
by Miya Kazuki
A light novel series with a well fleshed out world and magic system. It tells the story of a girl who is reincarnated into the body of a sickly commoner girl in another world. She loves to read but discovers books are something only the rich possess in this new world. She decides to use her knowledge from her previous life to make create and print books of her own.
---
Also a few manga recommendations
Delicious in Dungeon
Frieren
Magus of the Library
Kings of the Wyld. :) A group of legends get together once more for another adventure.
Yesss! That's the exact book I was thinking of when mentioning that trope haha, Kings of the Wyld is the main reason I really enjoy that type of story
I'm currently reading "Red Rising" and really liking it so far! Also, I've read and really enjoyed "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell".
The Faithful and the Fallen is amazing! I'm reading Wrath right now, and I can tell you: every book gets better. Malice is a bit of a rough start, as it has some iffy prose, and I personally didn't connect with too many of the characters. However, it still is great, and everything that was good about it was improved in Valor. And then improved that much again in Ruin. As for what it's about, if you want to go in completely blind, don't scroll down. However, all I'm putting down there is prologue/blurb spoilers.
Over a thousand years ago, the Banished Lands were consumed by war. Men, giants, and creatures chose sides and fought in a God-war. Eventually, Elyon, God of the Banished Lands, personally intervened and scourged the world to defeat the angel turned Demon King, Asroth. After this, Asroth and his demons were trapped in another world, and Elyon departed, grief-stricken at what his creation had become. Now, men and giants have rebuilt, giving no thought to the history of the Banished Lands, for they are blinded by their own petty conflicts. But they should. For evil is stirring, white wyrms slither through the ground again, and the rocks are oozing blood. It is time for a second God-war, and this time, there is no God to save the world from Asroth.
I highly recommend the Prydain Chronicles. One of my favorite series of all times, I’ve read it several times and just keep loving it more!
What is it about? I'm currently reading 2 books, one is malazan book 2, the other is elric saga
That entire series is on my TBR list. I watched The Black Cauldron animated movie as a kid and only found out that it was based on a book series last year 🤦♂️
I love that series! Reading them when I was a kid is what ignited my love of the fantasy genre.
Well, the whole series is based on Welsh folklore, which is really cool and different. Here’s the summary of the first book, the Book of Three, from Goodreads:
“Taran wanted to be a hero, and looking after a pig wasn’t exactly heroic, even though Hen Wen was an oracular pig. But the day that Hen Wen vanished, Taran was led into an enchanting and perilous world. With his band of followers, he confronted the Horned King and his terrible Cauldron-Born. These were the forces of evil, and only Hen Wen knew the secret of keeping the kingdom of Prydain safe from them. But who would find her first?”
Grew up watching The Black Cauldron and loved it! I definitely need to get to this series at some point!
Garth Nix started me on my fantasy journey, under appreciated author I feel.
Definitely under appreciated! I love his Old Kingdom series and also grew up reading The Fall and a few other series by him. Barely ever hear anyone talking about his work though
Just recently finished listening to the audio books of The Old Kingdom series narrated by Tim Curry. It was so good! Highly recommend it.
Can highly recommend the whole «Edan» Trilogy!

You should come to Ireland!!! The weather isn't the best if you're planning on doing a ton of walking but the atmosphere with the rain if you're inside one of our iconic pubs is class-should also recommend trying to watch a Gaelic match, it's such an underatted sport in other countries!
Nobody in the comments seems to bring this up, but… those 3D renders are quite impressive!!
I'm glad you mentioned James Islington. I really enjoyed his Licanius trilogy. The plot got a bit convoluted at times, but overall a really terrific trilogy with an interesting magic system, interesting characters, and some great world building.
Put Sun Eater on your list and move it to the top.
Yesssssss
The book that would't burn. Amazing read!! So thought provoking. I wasn't ready for the ending. There were parts in the book I actually needed a time out. Because it just blow my mind. Serious contender for book of the year. I haven't read anything like it. Good luck for your TBR this year. I know the feeling. So many book so little time. Shanay. Cape Town🇿🇦
I think you'll enjoy Bound & the Broken. It gets great in book 2.
I'm think I'll likely start it in March, can't wait!
The Faithful and the Fallen is my second favorite fantasy series of all time. The action is perfect, the characters are well written and you will love to love the good guys and love to hate the bad guys.
I can't wait to start it! Hoping to get to it next month
There is a very underrated independently published series with less than 4000 Goodreads' reviews by Melissa McPhail - A Pattern of Shadow & Light. I highly recommend you read this series as it has everything including delving into grimdark as well.
Do you know if the series will be finished. Last I heard was her friend was working on it but haven’t heard an update in quite some time.
Wow, that's a lot of reading. A lot of good reading for you this year. I plan to read The Age of Madness, Warbreaker and Elantris and Children of Light. Beyond those, I've no idea. Maybe Dark Matter since I've owned it for a while and already read Recursion and enjoyed it. Happy Reading!
Benjamin Stevenson’s “Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone” and its sequel “Everyone on this Train is a Suspect” are fantastic. I cannot recommend them enough. The POV character is so charming and amusing that I don’t mind that he breaks the fourth wall to explain mystery rules to ensure that the mystery is “fair”. The first was my favorite book last year and the sequel is already contending to be the champion this year.
Regarding SK, Salem’s Lot is my favorite, though It, Misery, Pet Semetary, and Cujo are all great
That is quite the list!!! Good luck!!😊
Thanks! 😊
Slow reader here 👋🏻😊 so many books… so little time… love the video!
I'd recommend Pet Sematary and Misery as your next King reads. As a massive King fan, those two and The Shining are probably my favorites.
I absolutely love the Cradle series. I type through those books and then plowed through the audiobooks! Quick reads and I love the characters!
These videos always put a big smile to my face!!! 😀 I love your list, and I will have to put some of these to my own wishlist!!! As a Stephen King fan, I highly recommend 'Salem's Lot, as it is my favorite of his novels, as well as my personal favorite horror book ever!?!?! I also recommend Carrie and his first book of short stories, Night Shift!!! Thank you again for all the creativity and time you put into your content- have a lovely week and until next , sensational Mr. Jay!!!!! 😀 🎉❤
I was hoping to see Sun Eater on here.. Feel like it would become an instant favorite on this channel
Hmmm actually, I might try to get to that soon! I picked up a copy a few months back and have been hearing such good things about it
Trials of Apollo, Malice, Dungeon Crawler Carl and the Wizardoms books have all been on my own TBR list for a hot minute. Maybe this year at last lol.
You also had some very interesting recommendations here. The Way of Eden sounds very good to me so does The Book That Wouldn't Burn and Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz.
*Sigh* one lifetime isn't long enough for all the books I want to read. Well I guess I had better get back to it while I have the time.
I just finished Light bringer… and I loved it!
Jay! Thanks for including Songs of Chaos on the list!! Really happy the books arrived in good nick and I'm excited to see what you think of them. Really hope you enjoy the story!
My pleasure! And thank you very much for sending them! I was actually just about to send you an email to let you know they arrived safely this time haha. Really looking forward to getting to the series and will definitely share my thoughts in some videos! :)
Hell yeah, "Jonathan Strange" is amazing (the movie adaptation was great too, very funny)! Everything by Susanna Clarke is good, very high-quality prose. If you like contemporary books with literary merit similar to more classic novels, I can recommend Madeline Miller; she's only written 2 books so far ("The Song of Achilles" and "Circe"), but both are really great. They're sort of subversive retellings of classical Greek myths.
the sun eater is great
I finished the first Dungeon Crawler Carl book yesterday (from your recommendation) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I've tried and failed to read a couple of other LitRPG books and didn't think the genre would work for me in general, but I really enjoy the science fiction element. I just needed it to make sense in some kind of way other than just because.
Yeaaah more Malazan!
Just a few subs away from reaching 100, 000. I would like to congratulate you in advance. Congratulations, Jay!
Thank you!!! Very excited to finally reach that milestone 😁
70s King is the best place to start. I’d recommend Salems Lot, The Stand and The Dead Zone. 3 all timers for me. Salems Lot and The Stand are pre requisite reading for The Dark Tower.
Don’t disappoint Fitz, the fool and night eyes.
Highly recommend The Stand. If you are looking for shorter, Mr. Mercedes was really good.
So many great books! I've also got Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell on my list for this year, as this book has been sitting on my TBR shelf since 2004! Yes, 2004, so 2024 is the year I finally read this chonker! XD
Wow 20 years! Haha I think you owe it to the book to read it this year! Hoping it won't let us down!
@@CapturedInWords yeah it's a long time, but heard it's meant to be good, and I really enjoyed the BBC tv adaptation, which I recommend!
Also, loved Piranesi, so fingers and toes are crossed 😁
I just recently finished The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe and absolutely loved it. One of the hardest reads of my life: it’s incredibly abstract and leaves a lot to be inferred. But I love a book that requires concentration and piecing together. It took me to the end of the first book to realize that it’s not trying to tell a story but rather convey its main themes of identity, purpose, and destiny. And even if you aren’t sure what’s going on in the “story”, you can enjoy Gene Wolfes masterful prose and try to find the theme within the pretty sentences.
It’s an A+ series for me.
The bound and the broken is amazing. Best books I have read in a while
Can't wait to start them!
I own Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Haven’t read it. Hopefully I’ll finish right when you drop your review video.
The Ember Blade by Chris Wooding
One of the best Fantasy books I read in years! I highly recommend reading that
An Indie steampunk fantasy you may enjoy is Cities of Smoke and Starlight by Alli Earnest. She is writing book 3 right now. It is steampunk Rogue One and Pride and Prejudice had a baby. (Not high in romance though) very fun and adventurous.
If you like steampunk you would love the Lord of the mysteries, with eldritch gods in it
PLEASE READ SUN EATER TRUST MEEE.
Inspired by the CRUSADES?? Gunmetal Gods is now on my wish list. I don’t think I’ve ever added a book so dang quick🤣
If you read *The Bound and the Broken* series the please start whit the Fall (the prequel novella) it gives you a mutch better what the serien is like then the first book.
And please don't stop after the first book, they just get better
The Will of the Many was my favorite book of 2023 and it's in my top 5 all time.
Bound and the Broken is a must read! It's the only series that has any chance of catching SA for my favorite series, and I've never seen another series or author improve so much between books 1 and 2.
I enjoyed Songs of Chaos. It's a nice easy read for when you need a break from either darker stories or complex epic fantasy.
If you haven't read it yet, Dragon Mage is another indie dragon rider book that I would highly recommend. It's incredible how different The Bound and the Broken, Songs of Chaos, and Dragon Mage all are. Outside of a dragon being involved, the only thing they have in common is that they are all great!
I loved Salems Lot and The Green Mile!
We have a lot of reading goals in common!
Awesome!!!
I’ve read quite a few King. The Shining is my favorite, but I actually don’t really like most of the ones that others love. But The Green Mile is amazing, as is 11/22/63, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, It, and (kinda) the Dark Tower. I also enjoyed Christine, and Cujo was pretty good too.
Great video! Love that you’re covering some horror now too. I’m 75% of the way through IT and really enjoying it so far (but can’t vouch for the ending yet). And really exciting about the group trip too! Thanks again!
I ended up starting The Stand and am already hooked on it! About 20% through it already, and am taking notes to review it. I think next I'll read IT :) Can't wait for the trip!!!
@@CapturedInWords oh yay enjoy the Stand! That’s on my list too! And look forward to hearing your views on it. Yay it’s so exciting about the trip! Look forward to learning more about it 🥳🥳
I’m so happy you’re reading Jonathan Strange and Mister Norrell! It’s one of my all-time favourites. It’s rooted in fae folklore in the very best way, you will love the characters, and of course the prose is beautiful.
It sounds very interesting! I'm looking forward to it! :)
I'm not someone who is big on over hyped books, so I was really skeptical going into The Bound and the Broken series. It is completely worth it and actually doesn't get enough hype. This is the only series where I've vowed to read even the companion novellas, and I have. Definitely get into it, especially for a dragon rider lover like yourself.
Dungeon Crawler Carl all the way! I read all six books in one go. I never, ever do that but that was just too enjoyable.
Love Dungeon Crawler Carl! I'll definitely make a 3 min rec video for it soon!
I’m tackling the storm light archive.
the way I gaped the same way as the sound effect when you mentioned that you haven't read the greenbone saga yet 😂 you are in for a wild ride!!!
Haha I can't wait to start it!
So many books, so little time. My sentiments too man!
I wanna take a pause in reading Rick Riordan's books at the moment. I am still contemplating when and which of his series will I choose to start reading. Have you read Heroes Of The Olympus series?
I read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell years ago, I remember it being pretty slow at first but when I got into it I could not put it down :))) Definitely worth it
I think you will enjoy The Faithfull and the fallen.
Excited to get to it!
Dungeon Crawler Carl, the most fun reads I have had in years
Agreed!
I love Cradle! Also, Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is really good. It’s about a girl who gets lost in the woods, and she stays calm by listening to her favorite baseball player’s games in her Walkman while she tries to find her way back
Im on malazan 9 rn and the hype is real
I still have a long way to go I'm in book 2 😊
@@orashionseis oh my goodness i loved deadhouse gates!! Ur in for a treat. Books 1 and 7 i thought were good and everything else was amazing 10/10 reads so dont worry about any slogs 😂
@@zacharyshaye6111 I'm currently reading two books one malazan book 2 and elric the saga I'm truly enjoying both books 😊
It’s an unending, and ever growing situation: books I want to read lol
Hahaha yesss, it's an endless struggle 😂
Don't be scared off by the length of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. One of the most unique books out there, the humor of Jane Austen meets the historical fiction of War & Peace meets the magic of fantasy. And also in there are the footnotes of, I don't know, Infinite Jest, I guess? Haha.
Anyway, amazing read, well worth the time, an honest-to-God classic imo.
I would highly suggest The Broken Earth trilogy from N. K. Jemisin. Interesting setting, unique “magic” system. Like you I’m a slow reader but I read the trilogy in a week during vacation. Couldn’t put it down.
Although not fantasy, but Historical Fiction, I think you'd LOVE The Book Thief
Malazan lore videos from you is the content I’ve been waiting for. Please.do.
Berserk is so fucking good. Definitely take your time and appreciate all the artwork, it's really stunning stuff; albeit very grotesque at times.
If you want to try something non fantasy, I tried reading Beartown which is the first non fantasy book I've read in a long time, and it suddenly became the best book I've ever read, I highly recommend it. Please give it a shot
As a King fan and Constant Reader, I can recommend Pet Sematary, Salem’s Lot, Misery or 11.22.63 as your next reads. Salem’s Lot is an absolute must before diving into The Dark Tower, otherwise you’ll have it spoiled in book 5.
Also, The Shining was my first King book, too✌🏼
Hey that's awesome The Shining was your first book too! Thanks for the recs! I actually just decided to pick up The Stand yesterday and have now been hooked on that book, about 20% through already and really enjoying it😂After this though, I think I'll read Salem's Lot!
@@CapturedInWords Niice, The Stand is also a great pick! Glad you’re liking it✌🏼 And I can’t wait for you to start The Dark Tower. It’s my favorite series of all time and one of the weirdest you’ll ever come across😂
I was so glad to see you've started the will of the Many! It was one of the best books I read in 2023. Definitely read Salem's Lot, it is the only book that has given me that shivery feeling you get watching a horror movie. It's really well written and scary af, you'll love it
I'm getting closer to the end of Will of the Many now and wow it is such an incredible book! Definitely a new favorite of mine! I ended up starting The Stand a few days ago, and am already 20% through now and really enjoying it! I think after that I'll read Salem's Lot :)
Your TBR looks like mine except I already read Dark Matter (hated) and Jonathan Sorrell and Mr. Strange (loved).
You're gonna love The Faithful and The Fallen! John Gwynne writes way good! Also it's way happier than Joe Abercrombie lol
Enjoying Malice a lot so far!!
Salem's Lot would be a great King book to jump into. One of his scariest and, according to him, his most scary
Ohhh the Eleventh Cycle sounds amazing! I love Dark Souls, so yeah...XD
It really does!! Can't wait to read that one
You can't go wrong with John Gwynne. He's a beast ! Absolutely love everything about this dude's books ! You better buy book 3 Ruin, cuz it's a really really good one ! :D
He's my 3rd favourite fantasy author after Sanderson and Abercrombie ! :D
When it comes to Stephen King definitely read doctor sleep It’s a great sequel to the shining and the movie is really good too. Also I would recommend duma Key it has a lot of fantasy elements that are right up your alley plus a good dose of horror. If you’re looking for trilogies, check out the Bill Hodges Mercedes trilogy they’re great detective stories with a little supernatural bend The audiobooks are great too. They are narrated by will Patton. If you’re looking for a good standalone, try the stand, of course, but also green mile, the Institute, revival, Joyland, our great ones as well if you’re looking for epic storytelling do the stand under the dome and 11 2263. Haven’t read the talisman, but here it’s good for that sort of thing as well.
My Goal for 2024 is to read more books. I'm the past I've only really read manga and comics but skipped actual novels. With most games, movies and shows either being bad or I'm not interested in, especially in the sci-fi and Fantasy genre. It's the perfect time for me to read. Started reading the first Dune book today.
Salem’s Lot is a good early King to go to next. I’d also recommend Skeleton Crew, Night Shift, Different Seasons, The Dead Zone and Cujo (maybe). The first two highlight how good a short story writer he is. The Long Walk (written as Richard Bachman) is also fantastic. A lot of fans will tell you Christine isn’t good for some reason but in my opinion it’s underrated and unfairly maligned 👑
Assuming you haven't already read it, I highly recommend The Dandelion Dynasty by Ken Liu.
I haven't read a lot of Stephen King books, but what I've read I've really enjoyed - The Stand, 11/22/63, and The Dark Tower series.
I would give Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell 3.5 stars. She writes well, but for me the story itself wasn't exceptional, merely good.
I think the Murderbot Diaries are soooo damn funny.
I feel like my TBR is totally insane. I completely resonated with your desire for a time stopping library. I certainly can't get to all of this in 2024, but I want to eventually get to New Crobuzon (Bas-Lag) by China Mieville, The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson, Wind And Truth by Brandon Sanderson, some David Gemmell, some Michael Sullivan, Book Of The New Sun by Gene Wolfe, Red Rising by Pierce Brown, The Last War by Mike Shackle, The Bound And The Broken by Ryan Cahill, some Brian McClellan, Empire Of The Vampire by Jay Kristoff, The Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio, some Tad Williams, The Expanse by James S.A. Corey, some James Islington, and The Black Company by Glen Cook. Whew!
Good luck with your reading year!
for King I would recommend either Fairy Tale (a more recent release) or the Eyes of the Dragon (one of his few forays into fantasy other than the Dark Tower series), also I would say read Doctor Sleep, it's a sequel to The Shining
Also if you do finish the Faithful and the Fallen, Gwynne has a sequel trilogy called Of Blood and Bone that takes place hundred of years after the original series
jonathan strange and mr norrell is probably one of my favourite books. it doesnt really do "systems" for a novel so steeped in magic, lets just say its doing its own thing there and to its credit. it does do characters and the history of its world really well, and the kind of prose and tidbit-sharing that you would expect from something like moby dick (which for some will be a dealbreaker, i get). piranesi has definitely given you a taste of what jonathan strange would be like, but with the opportunity to apply so much more depth and mystique. hope you enjoy
p.s john gwynne is not a bad time by any accounts but dont expect the final book or two to have the same tone as the first couple. almost like it has a genre change.
If you didn't have "The Green Bone Saga" on this list, I would have told you to read it ASAP!
My TBR: books I already own that I haven’t read 😊
That's a good goal to set!
You need to read Doors of Stone
If you like Sentient Ships, try the classic "The Ship Who Sang" by Anne McCaffrey
I just bought the Will of the Many because the Licanius Trilogy is one of my new favorites!!! You should definitely read the Licanius trilogy. Also, welcome to the Constant Readers with finally getting to some Stephan King.
Hope you enjoy Will of the Many as much as I am!
following your reading order i have until dec 6th to try and reading everything in the cosmere. im halfway through the final empire lol. gonna do my best
Good luck!! The Cosmere can be daunting, but it's such an incredible universe with so many fun stories
My mother likes your channel, bro.
Awesome! Haha I'm happy she enjoys the videos, say hi from me
You should read She Who Rides the Storm by Caitlin Sangster! It is such an underrated fantasy novel with an awesome magic system and is one of the few series where I like all the viewpoint characters. It’s also a finished series with only 2 books and I’m reading the sequel right now. Highly recommend!
Thanks for the rec, it sounds awesome! I've seen this book in the bookshop a few times and have always been curious! I'll definitely need to check it out!
