This is so much better than hiring someone to do everything. It's so much better when you can look back and see what you've done. Keep up the good work and can't wait for the next episode.
This is what us poor people say lol. I’ve helped my old man with my two brothers build enough barns on our property that I sure wish we had the cash to pay someone hahaha.
Fully agree! ... but also might agree with @jayk.2276 here in a few weeks 😅
Shops looking great. No better feeling than knowing that you built it with your own hands!
I’ve been waiting for another video! My daughter has been saying she wants to, “watch the man with the hat!”
I’m a builder - they frame in two days cause they have 4-8 people at a time knocking the job out! You’re killing it!
Before you know it you'll be in there building cars & doin' stuff in what is turning out to be a fantastic back yard shop. Great work. Billy J.... Queensland. Australia.
I'm from Queensland too good to see other Aus especially Queensland watchers
It's looking good. I would think that you would only need a 12 inch header with the span that you have. For your garage door you may want a double 12 inch, so one on top of 1 another. And now to give you a good solid surface to bolt. The overhead tension Springs 2 for the door. If you want to look and see how to frame out a garage door there's several bill videos on RUclips on RR buildings.
You may want to watch and they explain a good way of framing out garage doors and you're man door. Was your building being still framed? I don't think you have to worry on the span that you have
great build...hopefully you are gonna have spray foam insulation applied to the walls, adds structural strength and provides a great heat/cold and sound barrier
As a subscriber from since you and your young family lived in Hawaii, my hat is off to you young man, this is a huge undertaking and you are doing a great job. The experience you are getting will be very fulfilling and you will be able to carry it with you the for rest of your life. As a contractor myself for the past almost 20 years, there is few things better than looking back at the end of a long day and admiring what you have built with your own two hands. Don't worry about the people that are whining about how long it's taking, they have likely never built anything in their life, especially nothing on the scale of what you are building. Keep doing what you are doing and before you know it you will be able to use your shop as I'm sure you have dreamed of many times.
Wow it's coming out beautiful, nothing gets better than doing it yourself
I love the fact you’re doing this yourself and you have a great attitude and energy. I’ll keep watching as long as it takes.
I’m a home diyer and love building. I’m enjoying these videos more than the car vids!
I’m loving watching you do it yourself I actually prefer it.
Hey man just a little hack for you, all I use to haul 16' lumber is a $100 kayak rack I bought on Amazon. Connects via your hitch and basically extends your bed. Works flawlessly. Great content! Can't wait to see the finished shop!
Good idea but he doesn’t have a hitch on his 07 Silverado. But I might look into this for myself instead of borrowing a trailer
@@thomasturnquist118 if you have a northern tool, look for a truck bed extender. Just watch how much weight you put on them. Doesnt take long that far out there to get really really heavy
@@thomasturnquist118 touche'.. I didn't notice that lol
So cool! Loved the “We built this” scene!
Building is coming along nice! Can’t wait to see the final product. Hate Karen’s. Every HOA always seems to have em. Do you plan on doing any hvac for the garage like mini splits?
Here's some good advice from somebody that's had several shops do not put a canister roll-up door in! You will regret it they're noisy beyond belief with the wind and they suck (R)value-wise They let the cold through and the heat They suck they suck they suck I wish I wouldn't have done the roll-up door on one side of my shop worst decision I ever made trust me! You got plenty of heights for an overhead garage/shop door!
THATS HOW YOU DO IT, BEAST MODE, GREAT JOB BROTHER, KEEP GOING FORWARD THE REWARD WILL BE WORTH IT ALL, GOD BLESS 👍💪🙏✝️🌅🏝️👣🇺🇸♥️
Nice work, but you will seriously regret scrimping on windows. I added 6 skylight panels to my shop and the difference is night and day.
Nice work. Especially cutting, climbing and doing most of it alone. Pride isn’t what you buy. It’s what you build. Can’t wait to see the next video
Thanks for watching. I'm having a blast building this thing.
Dude, you are doing an amazing job. Keep doing what you’re doing. Remember always give God praise because he is the one that gives us the strength to do what we do
As the sill seal product you’re using isn’t waterproof I personally would have used a nice thick line of caulk sealant right on the concrete before installing the pink sill seal. Extra protection at a pretty cheap price. Fingers crossed your concrete is absolutely level with no little dips in it.
Would be much faster, scissor lift with extending platform.
Great work! Better than D R Horton! Lol
Make a small grind mark on the concrete where every stud is. This way when you go to hang things, you can easily find the studs.
A sharpie works better and doesn't gouge your concrete and give a place for dirt to hide. Also, if the sharpie marks drive you insane then a magic eraser will remove it if it's on polished concrete and sandpaper will remove it if it's on a broom finished concrete slab.
Can’t get enough of this build. Looks amazing
Mahalo! 🤙🏽
Save yourself some future headaches and use a 2x6 stacked laminate been for the roll up door header
Take a 2×4 the length in between your up rights and lay on side and it strengthen your piece on top
Nice work. Tip, temporary nail/screw a long board horizontally at a decent height to help support the studs as you place them. Works a bit like a 3rd hand. Good job.
You should consider buying a used scissor lift like a genie 1930. Use it and resell it when you are done. I bought one building my 65x70 shop but I kept it. I have a 20-foot ceiling...the lift makes everything inside much easier..
100% should have before I bought this scaffolding. Figure I'm getting a workout every time I climb up this thing 😅
I gotta admit, I didn’t think you’d have the cahonnies to get this far. Great job, let no one ever tell you can’t do it, no matter what it is. Job well done!
U cld use a leaf blower to get dust and dirt off, it wld b faster and easier then usein a broom.
more blocking up high where you were standing
New to the channel and already hooked! I’ve been waiting for a new uploaded it’s awesome your learning and doing it yourself!
I never have understood why builders install blocking laterally using toenailing. I understand it may be more aesthetically pleasing, but they are usually hidden by sheathing and drywall. Stagger every other block by 1-1/2" and you will be able to end nail each one. It's a stronger connection and it's faster.
I’ll still sit here and watch no matter how long it takes! Keep going dude!
Appreciate the support! 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Algorithm engagement comment: Love seeing you learn your way through the process of doing things.
- Don't worry about how long things are taking. I enjoy the videos when they come out.
Algorithm engagement response 😎: Thanks for watching! (and commenting)
---- you can do it if you are desperate enuff', or crazy enuff': I once carried 6 2 X 6 X 22' from the lumberyard to the jobsite in my 93 Miata - the lower 2 were ground down to a severe angle, but they got there ----- the solution is this little known invention called a "truck rack" and works better if you have a WT with a real ( read "long" ) bed
💯
Looking forward to watching you tackle the electrical on this project. I've recently been doing the same on my own home, DFW local here as well.
I may call in a little bit of help on electrical, but I'll be heavily involved lol
I’d rather a slower video so we can actually follow along and learn a bit too lol
With all the weather ya'll get in Texas, I you do heavy-duty glass or plexi.
Bro you really smoked your son in running? I do the same to my kids LOL.
It looks like I saw a brick ledge hopefully it’s there. Also since those walls have no load on them the windows could have been just box frames. No need for a header.
We have a 5.5" brick ledge all the way around. I wasn't 100% if I needed a header or not, so I'm erroring on the "overbuilt" side on this project. 🤙🏽
Make sure to do a borate treatment on the boards while wood is exposed.
LOOKS GREAT!
Looking great. I am admire that you are doing almost all of the work on this and learning so much at the sametime. I am jealous of the size of garage and you building.
Brother, I'm a die hard Ford fan... But I've been watching this build series from the beginning. I love the content and the desire to learn to build things yourself. In a world where people just pay others to do things, the art of being self sufficient is dying. Kudos and Aloha from a fellow Texan.
I wish I was your neighbor to help!
Rack is Genius and turns into a Bench in the Garage. Put yourself down for a Raise!
Have you looked into a powder actuated gun to shoot 2” pin into the steel instead of drilling all those holes it will save you a lot of time it works for concrete as well
I almost pulled the trigger on it (pun intended)... the iron isn't too bad to drill through so I'll probably keep going that route!
Blocking is a great idea. Keeps the studs straight like you said anx also for when you want to hang anything heavy on the walls when sheetrocked like cabinets. Just a little note when you do your outside sheathing you have to block where the seams come together so you can nail it to pass frame inspection. Also fireblocks at 10' and sealed once sheathing is on.
Shops looking great. Guys frame them really fast by framing all the walls on the ground in assembly line fashion and standing them up.
I would recommend the garage door height be tall as for a RV camper
Been seeing this comment a lot. How high would that need to be? 14'?
Removal surf rack 👍👍 cool idea. Looking good brother.
No better feeling of accomplishment than building your own shop.
Keep the great work up man! Ur doing awesome!
NICE looking great!
FYIW, lumber at Lowes is about double the price vs my local lumber yard. But I'm sure you checked your LY if you have one.
Congratulations on your new shop building 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
You are a Beast! I worked for a contractor when I was a bit younger. You are doing great, especially since a lot of it is on your own. This will be a project to be proud of when its complete..
Enjoy following along!!
Thank you for watching! I'm having a blast building this 🤙🏽
I enjoy getting into these videos until seeing these sponsors. Ugh....AG1 honestly is not a great supp. Theres multiple videos on how questionable it really is, besides the $100 to order. Remember if youre already in DECENT shape, this will do nothing for you. Sorry, but after being in the industry for 20 yrs, im tired of seeing this crap. Never the less, the new shop is turning out fantastic! Dont know how you put up with the HOA! Kudos for getting them to work with ya.
Your videos are cool, no doubt, no argue. But your energy gives that channel the Life!
Mahalo!
Love the content man!! I'm in the planning process of doing my own shop(although not as large)....AND dealing with a HOA in the metroplex. It's inspiring and I'm here for it!
Super impressed with what your doing by yourself and help from sarge. Keep pushing!!!. I just found you today and immediately subscribed 👍
I do not understand RUclips at all!!!! And not just your channel but several others. I am a long time subscriber. Comment now and again. When you made the comment of getting close to 200k subscribers, I click and look how many subscribers you have. Then it tells me I am not a subscriber. On your channel I can distinctly think of this happening twice. Don’t understand why. You new videos show up in my suggestions but from time to time I check and I am suddenly no longer a subscriber.
I'm so impressed with your construction skills, not bad for a computer guru, everything is looking fantastic and really good idea to add more windows, you'll be so happy with all the natural light coming into the shop! I'm so excited about my shop progress because we're going to pour the floor on Tuesday, they tell me it will take about 15 trucks! So sorry to hear about the corvette damage, loved the portable truck rack/work table idea. 200k is within your sights! Take care and don't work too hard bud!
Keep up the amazing work brother..... you're doing great 👍
See ya soon,
Take care,
~Jonny5🥁
This series is showing how much of a headache and super restrictive HOAs are. I know if HOA wasn't involved in this project it probably could've been completed by now for a lot cheaper than currently invested into the project.
Bought a 1940 farm house (as our first) and never touched a remodel, we did it all ourselves minus the drywall. I will say, insulation is very important, have you thought about what you’re going to go with?
Dude you're doing a great job.
2 things
1 do things on your time schedule we'll keep watching.
2 doors a the same as windows just don't need the cripple stud. King and Jack with a double layered 2x6 or 2x8 header and your good.
Love seeing the process and the progress
Love your channel love your progress you’re doing an amazing job. Most likely better than hiring a contractor. Thanks for sharing.
Oofffff
WTH would you move in an HOA area .
That shit should be completely banned from the USA
14:39 - That is Avery smart idea to add blocking. I, personally, would have set up the blocking vertically, meaning the widest flat part of the block running stud to stud staying flush against the edges of the stud’s so that later when you want to hang cabinets or something you have the blocking you can screw into rather than just the 1.5 inches of the edge of those studs.
Should’ve made that rear wall with a garage door. Especially with your history of needing materials and trucks delivered via the back road and removing your fence.
I am glad you aren't hiring someone to do the work. Doesn't it feel great to accomplish what you have so far? And you are doing a great job that looks very professional. Very impressive dude.
Dude a 3 axis laser level from Amazon could have saved you a bunch of time! Get one! Great job though, best of luck!
I'm surprised that fire code doesn't require you to have a back or side door towards the rear of the building. Please consider that in your safety plan, especially if you will have flammable items in the shop, such as oil, gasoline, etc.
Dude your rockin it!! Keep it up!!
Tip Make yourself some sawhorses to cut your lumber!
It would be awesome if @buildshow could collab with you on this build! Best of luck and I look forward to continue watching the progress until it’s complete.
U are doing an amazing job.
Awesome! I enjoy doing that kind of stuff. I do alot of that myself. I buy the tools to do it and consider it an investment to have the tools besides a present to myself.
Sorry about your vetted. Another project to fix it and hunt for parts. 😢
Otherwise great job on your shop 😅🤙👍
Why are you doing 16” on center? You’re not load bearing. Why not 24” on center?
Love this build, I see where this is ultimately going. Your wife will want your newfound carpentry skills to do a house addition or remodel project for her.
15:57 camera is clearly in the middle of your garage and about 8 ft off the ground. How is it raining on your camera? Outside of a hurricane rain doesn’t travel 20 ft sideways!
I love this series! Regardless of your skill set just shows with some determination and research you can do! Then at the end you can look back and say "yes! I did that!" Oh and its cheaper too! 😂
One thing is for sure . You woukd of never ever gotten ot the nice , straight, clean , down right with a contractor.
Absolutely awesome job .
I learn from experience. You want it done right. You got to do it yourself
Just a thought but you could hold a weekend subscriber help session where you select a number of people to come help frame. I’ve seen other people I follow do this on projects they want to speed up… assuming you want to speed this part up.
Love the progress though!
Since you went with the red iron, you don’t need to frame the windows out like a normal stick build cause there’s no downward force needing the extra lumber. Enjoying the build, need to buy another house with a bigger yard so I can build me one too.
@11:28 to 11:32 You go Mrs. Lonestar Hawaiian, Dance like nobody's watching. 😊
Awesome job! for the sides. What I would do is just pre-build them on the floor and then just stand them up into place. That would be the quickest way to do that.
guys frame in 2 days cause they have 15+ people, you're killing it by yourself
Good job on the fire blocking. I missed it on my basement finishing and found out walls have to be blocked at 10 feet.
ok, just going to say it. Anyone else just want to have lunch with and pick his brain and just hang out. I just got my first truck and his vids are a fantastic blueprint for some of things i want to do.
Make sure to install a video camera in your shop, I wanna see what happens when a Texas wind storm blows through your yard.
The shop is coming along nicely. I just can’t stop thinking you are going to regret not putting a drain in for a sink. Or even a bathroom. It can still be done but I’d do it before you close the walls in. I’ve core drilled a lot of slabs to put electrical services in. The newer the concrete the easier it is.
Bro you showed our face 90% of video ! You could talk while showing the project
You likely already thought of it but you may want to run Ethernet (network cable) out there to the shop so you can have a switch and or WiFi readily available
One thing I really appreciate in my home are skylights. Even have them in my closets! Some days I don’t even turn my lights on without realizing it.
If you find a good deal on some skylights…. I recommend throwing some in your shop.
There are two types of skylights in the world: those that leak, and those that don’t leak, yet.
Skylights are problems and will eventually leak. I recommend staying clear, even though the look and light is nice.
Will you be putting in a mezzanine in the shop? That would be a cool area for a home office and also a place to survey your empire.
I love how you give the neighborhood Karen’s a run for their money. If it weren’t for you, they wouldn’t have anything else to worry about.
Hey brother love watching your videos you amaze me every time. I notice that the concrete floor has cracks running thorough it might want to seal the floors or ever address those stress cracks before they become bigger.
