The original Xbox couldn't handle what they originally had planned. You were actually supposed to travel to the ark (which is buried on earth in this version) with the arbiter and slay truth right there. They had to cut so much from this game, that's why legendary is broken like it is. It was a quick fix to rebalance the game when they had to remove a ton of enemies from most encounters right before launch. But it's not like you say, this was before bungie sold it's soul to activision.
I was confused and dismayed (legitimately thought the game crashed). Doubt that feeling is ever going to change. If you're to "finish the fight", then finish it. Don't cut out or wait for the sequel. So anti-climatic.

Since Finale takes part of Thermopylae Soon (another track in the OST) it can also be found there at 2:09. though I SWEAR I recall it from a later game- 3 I'm pretty sure- with an extended version so may wanna keep your eyes peeled for that hope this helps! :)
The difference between this cliffhanger hanger ending vs the one in halo 5 was in halo 2 you were pissed off because you wanted to play more where as in halo 5 you were pissed off because it sucked.

At least halo 3 continued the story with all the new characters introduced to us in halo 2. Halo infinite completely wrote every new character out of the story from halo 5 . It’s almost like the developers wanted to completely ignore what happened in the last game because of how divisive the story was for most fans Second I was actually really excited to play Halo 5 when it first came out. I was utterly disappointed when the trailers and ads had nothing to do with the final product because it marketed a completely different story than what we ended up with. That hype was inhuman, I don't think any game could live up to something like that - but maybe GTA4 or Halo3. We'll see. I liked the ending. It was mean, but pretty good, from an artistic standpoint.

Still my favourite Halo campaign. Had an Xbox as a kid and after that we got a ps3 in 2008 and I was so bummed I couldn't play Halo 3. I eventually did get an xbox 360 in 2013 and finished the fight.
the books were AMAZING!!! they grab you from the first page and don't let you go...plus after you're done reading the books, and you play the games over, you understand SO MUCH more and the experience is hugely amplified...awesome, a definite recommendation
You know halo is one of those games that is near and dear to my heart. Grew up playing it, staying up on friday nights with my buddys playing halo multiplayer and those are memories that i'll have forever. And just playing the campaign for halo 1 and 2 were just mindblowing how amazing the it was. Halo 1,halo 2 and halo 3 truly are some of the greatest video games of all time. Bungie i can't wait to see what you do next, and 343....i can't wait for halo 4, make the fans proud.

I heard master chief say “we’re finishing this fight” I was so excited to see what I’d be doing this time. I got ready to play . The screen went black and the credits came up. I sat there for a hour with a blank expression on my face. I was so pissed for the rest of the day I did not say a word. I just thought of that.....Ending.
How can people hate this ending? It just got me pumped for Halo 3. This is the Empire Strikes Back of Halo. And I spent hours in campaign and multilayer to complain about the ending. I only wish the it had a couple of more levels or was a bit longer and had the level from the demo. I love this ending and couldn't wait to finish the fight.
I think that a cliffhanger ending is one of the most powerful tools in the entertainment business, and to but it bluntly that made great use of it here. A perfect tool to lead up to and build suspense for the finale. But the finale has to be good for it to work effectively.
This is gonna sound weird but I could have sworn the ending literally had "To be continued" at the end of "finishing this fight" on the blackscreen after the music cut off...
Imagine if Halo 3 never came out and it just ended on this...
