I looked at my 82 g30. The steering box sits on the outside of the frame and is up approximately where your wanting it to be. I really don't know if this will work for you but it's might be something to look at.

Not sure why you had fitment issues with the doghouse opening. Maybe use G-van specific headers or manifolds. My 72 had a big block in it for a while & had no clearance issues.
Changing the manifolds may have helped. We got it, but it was tight.
I’m by far no expert nor am I trying tell anyone how to do anything but I do believe your supposed to remove head bolts in the same orientation in which they were torqued to prevent warping but you do you lol
Yes, they say they should be removed in order. I never have unless they are aluminum. Never had an issue. But you are supposed. Thanks for watching.

Can you install later model dog house and the area it clamps to to make engine bay better suited to v8 install by cutting out around floor and welding in newer model surround and dog box to 76 mod van or add a boxed out section to dog box and strengthen it all up to suit as a inch or so would solve the clearance. Issue
