      And to think, they wanted to do a contemporary early 80's rock score for the soundtrack as was originally planned. So glad they went this direction for the sound track, it basically made it timeless to appreciate, despite the cinematography. Though I personally love how it aged with minimal dialogue.

    Conan believes in the God Crom, who approves of an individuals courage and tenacity. People don't really "pray" to Crom, in fact it's said it's better to not draw his attention lest he sent more adversity your way to test your resolve. Crom actually looks down on prayer and people begging his intervention because he views it as an act of the weak.
    When Conan invokes Crom he basically says "Help me get revenge on those who wronged me, or get the fuck out of my way."
    Impressing Crom which is why he sends a Valkyrie to save him from a pitiful death at the hands of a lesser foe.

Very dramatic, given the breadth and width of the material at hand. These weird people, of which you speak, might not be completely mythical, when it comes to expressing themselves in a way that goes beyond an absolute wow of silence. Which makes your sentiment somewhat utopian in the desired simplicity. Sator Rotas in a square. Order in the center. Chaos at the edges. We do love our little models of the universe. For they make it much simpler to deal with existence as it is! Alas, reality operate with a higher degree of complexity, making it harder to conform to the dream of absolute Order. Also, the last line of narration at the end was "but that is another story", rather than "that story shall also be told" ; as a nod to the old custom that storytellers were paid "by the story", so a crafty storyteller would always leave his audience wanting more, and willing to pay.

    If I remember right, the origin story in this show is not what Howard had in mind. Conan was raised in a harsh land and climbed many rocks and mountains and fought many primitive barbarians, he wasnt kidnapped and essentially trained as a gladiator. Conan became a thief in his travels, eventually a pirate and raider but mostly by himself seeking money he fought many mythical monsters and armies.

    This legendary character has been around for over 90 years.
    From pulp magazines to a series of novels and long running comics by Marvel & Dark Horse.
    Conan did indeed embody the Barbarian archetype in sagas of sword and sorcery, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Sega's Golden Axe series, etc.
    This was only Arnold's 6th film and also his breakthrough role.
    The first time that Arnold was really, truly acting with both dialogue and action in one unique vessel.
    When I reading the Marvel comics of Conan from various eras and all I could see and hear was Arnold.
    The 1983 sequel, "The Destroyer" was like a RPG come to life and just as good.
    Arnold was going to become Conan for a 3rd time (2000-2010s) and it was shelved.
    Btw, you should check out Bridgette Nelsen's film debut (pre-Rocky IV), Red Sonja (1985), Another character by Robert E Howard and known as the "She-Devil with A Sword".
    Conan & Red Sonja both existed in the same universe.
    In that movie, Arnold has top billing and he's not Conan.
    He plays Lord Kalidor aka Arnold playing Arnold with Conan-esque skills.

Because the ancient Greek and Roman people viewed themselves as superior and civilized and others as not, "barbarian" also had a negative connotation. 'Citizens were recognied by their clean-shavedness. Barbarian' was a term to describe a non-citizen or unshaven. The occupational term 'barber' is associated, and 'barbe is the french word for'beard'.

The person was tied to the cross in a position such that they had to flex and pull themselves up to breath, when they got too tired to do this they slowly asphyxiated and died. The nails bit was for the added cruelty of having to pull against the spike through your own flesh in order to keep breathing basically making the crucified person torture themselves until they died. The things I learned in Catholic school.

    Age of Conan was an awesome game...til you started trying to get Tier 3 gear... Toth Amon's Castle raid, seven sequential battles and you needed dozens of committed players WHO KNEW THE STRATS to get through each one. And each one might require a different mix of types. And some class armor would only drop (and randomly!) in some of the battles...even ones where the group didn't need more than 1 of the class that could only get their armor in that battle. And the last battle where you had to deal with monsters, Toth Amon and the Giant Ape...where if ONE guy jumped into the pink mist too soon, half the group died. And the fight was on a freaking timer! The next DLC had Tier 4 gear on 6 man missions (they were hard but doable.) Tier 3 was where the community hit the wall and dozens or hundreds of players just disappeared. Sad...cause I really loved that game.

    • @carthedge7736
      @carthedge7736 4 месяца назад

      There's definitely truth in what you say about Tier 3 taking a toll on the playerbase, but if you were in a guild that had those committed players, it could be a really fun dungeon.

    • @WalterWild-uu1td
      @WalterWild-uu1td 4 месяца назад

      @@carthedge7736 The tough part was getting enough players in the right classes to show up at a specific time. You could stand around for an hour and actually be in the raid and then someone's friend would show up at the last minute and you got kicked if you weren't in a guild. Some guilds had armor drop lists where if you were a lone pickup and one piece of armor dropped in one of the battles, their guild member automatically got it. There was one battle where Assassin daggers dropped...I got sidelined like three times when they passed out the loot. They would beg you to join the zerg and then after you helped get 2/3rds of the way through the dungeon an officer in the primary guild would casually mention "Oh, guild members get primary right to armor drops." There were some guilds where they used a random die generator to assign loot. It was a catch as catch can issue. Toughest part for me personally...playing a Priest of Mithra in the last fight where you could randomly get pulled up onto a balcony and had to drop a mob in a certain time period or you got switched to the bad guy side...your own raid had to kill you then rez you. You HAD to know the strats.
