I’ll tell ya, as a little red headed girl growing up in the 80’s, Red Sonja was IT. Must have watched this movie 100 times.
Awesome comics too.
Or red haired boys too tbh...
I'd say this film started me on a lifelong obsession w/ redheads.
@@3Kings_Industries Wilma Flintstone, Ariel, Princess Lila, Jessica Rabbit, Kim Possible, oh yeah, I remember.
This movie as a kid made all the red headed girls in school more appealing. Red Tonya was a good watch for it's time.
Sandahl Bergman was actually asked if she wanted to play Red Sonja but she turned it down because she wanted to play the villain
Red Sonja was not a character in the original Robert E. Howard Conan stories but was a character in his short historical story The Shadow of the Vulture which takes place when the Turks laid siege to Vienna. She was not associated with Conan until the Marvel Comics adaptation in the 70s.
In "The Shadow of the Vulture" the character was named Red Sonya. So the Marvel character was the "it's a different character" while still being basically the same character adapted.
Thak you for relying.@@Logan_Baron
@@Logan_Baron It's not really the same character at all, other than being vaguely inspired by Howard's character. Red Sonya (Howard's character) is a gunslinger from the 16th century.
This movie is the reason we didn't get King Conan. They hired Arnold to play a small bit part, but they kept putting him on the call sheet for weeks.
He's supposedly doing it still, heard recently. It'll be about one last adventure.
Arnold would have loved to do more Conan movies , if they had followed Conan storyline and kept it R-rated .
Too be honest, this film would have failed without Arnold, the movie is terrible, only good thing about the movie was Arnold.
That little kid also had a series called sidekicks Where he is adopted by an uncovered cop and uses his martial arts to help him.
You can see a few episodes on RUclips, last time I checked. It’s preposterous a kid can do martial arts on grownups and defeat them. But Short Round did it for a few minutes in Temple of Doom. BTW, that’s not the “inconceivable” guy from Princess Bride. That’s the burnt hand German National Socialist Party member from Raiders of the Lost Ark. and Queen Gedrin is Sandhal Bergman- Conan’s old girlfriend
He's in the rundown to
That kid was bad ass. I hope he's doing well today.
His name is Ernie Reyes JR
@@deraykrause4517That kid is in his late 40’s now. I knew him through an acquaintance of mine. His father still taught at their karate centers, and I talked to his father a few times at the gym. He had a major health scare and almost died several years ago, but is doing well now. He still teaches martial arts.
This was great to watch on TV as a kid. Not so great anytime after.
It was on cinemax constantly in the late 80's. And it angered me so much because I wanted to watch Conan The Barbarian. Not this weird sequel/not sequel film.
10:42 "Must find the talisman. We must find my sister." And of course, don't bother to mention that all the other women have been entombed alive under the temple to die of suffocation, dehydration or starvation.
They call that pit, “the plot hole.”😂
@@FredtheDorfDorfman1985 Good one!
Well, to be fair, she threw the key down there on her way out, soooo... can't open it anyway? 🤷
@@hulkslayer626 The altar is made out of rock that had to have been cut and shaped with tools, so get some picks and chisels and sledge hammers and make a hole in that thing.
Amazing that, THAT little boy will one day serve Pizza to April O'Neil and the Turtles. And then swing on vines to beat the stuffing out of The Rock and Stiffler.
I didnt realize that was him for a decade after the Rundown came out! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 its such a great movie! :D
@@michaelriddick7116 Yeah Earnie Reyes Jr. has a rather impressive resume of movies. Including TMNT 2, The Rundown, The Last Dragon, Surf Ninjas and even a series that came out in the 80's when he was approximately 10 years old.
That series from the early 80’s was a big part of my childhood, yes I’m old lol.. Anyway, he also did F/X the tv series (based on the 80’s flick), in the 90’s..@@patrickcromwell7554
....do not remember him in The Rundown 🤔
@@hulkslayer626He's the guy The Rock fights in the jungle 😊 just before Rosario is revealed as the rebel leader :)
One of the two guys who swing with the vines, grab Rock by a leg and toss him into the trees 😅🤣😂
I must say, nobody does Arnold, especially Arnold in agony, better than Mr. You, Me, & The Movies!😂
The kid was also in The Last Dragon in 1985.
3:57 The original working title of this movie was actually 'Red Mullet', but they thankfully changed the name of the movie to 'Red Sonja' after early screen testing.
Ms movies is right in the books when conan obtained royal status he took kalidor as his royal name so it is conan 😂
I love you guys! I never thought I could have so much fun watching someone watch a movie, especially the sword and sorcery films you've viewed the last few weeks.
It's my opinion that Conan the Destroyer is better than the Red Sonja movie. Destroyer is no Conan the Barbarian which is far superior, but still an enjoyable film. Mrs. Movies nailed the opening narration and I loved Mr. Movies lyrics to the music. Fun reaction. I'm looking forward to Return of the Living Dead too.
ROLTD is another great 1985 movie! "BRAINS". "WE NEED MORE AMBULANCES"
Whos the moaner!?! You later if you play your cards right! Oh geez!🤣🤣🤨😳👍
spat up my drink on that one lmao
Willow (1988)
The actress playing the hot handmaiden (that touched the green stone in the beginning) is a niece of the legendary actor Klaus Kinski. (For some reason that is almost all the trivia I've bothered to memorize from this movie.)
You mean legendary actor/sociopath Klaus Kinski. 😄
15:50
Paul L. Smith (see also Bluto from Popeye, and a minor yet brutal role in Midnight Express)
One of the evil nephews in Dune (1984).
He was also in the crazy comedy Crimewave with Brion James.
And creepy gardener from Spanish slasher Pieces 1982
I can say that I love it when y'all little ones come in because they are so sweet and show how great y'all are.
You 2 have the most Beautiful and Blessed reasons for interruption... May God Bless You and your beautiful family ❤
Red Sonja: making The Destroyer seem like The Barbarian by way of comparison.
The main villain's lieutenant is actually the SS agent from raiders of the lost ark
Strange that it isn't Conan, as Red Sonja premiered in Marvel Comics - Conan the Barbarian #23 in 1972.
It's clearly meant to be Conan. He's just using an alias.
The actress who plays Valeria in Conan actually plays Queen Gedron in this movie. Also, different color hair. -OG
Hey, Mr. and Mrs.! Red Sonja is a Marvel Comics creation that transplanted one of Robert E. Howard's historical fiction creations into the Hyborian Age of Conan. The actual Red Sonya of Rogatino character Howard crafted was a Polish-Ukrainian mercenary who fought the Ottoman Turks during the Siege of Vienna in 1529 in the story "The Shadow of the Vulture".
Technically, this movie is inferior to "Conan the Destroyer," but I honestly had more fun watching it than "Conan the Destroyer."
4:34 I can imagine Tom Servo singing this song... God, I really miss MST3K...
Who says that wasn't Tom Servo singing thru my soul?
Mr and Mrs Movies fight must have been truly EPIC! 🤠
A fan theory is that, this takes place after Conan became king. He uses the name *Kalidor* to fool would-be assassins.
Fun facts: Sandahl Bergman was asked to be Red Sonja but she thought it was too close to Valeria, so she asked to play the villainess and got it!
-Brytag and his people are Dagon worshipers, hence their sea creature clothing. Pat Roach (Brytag) was the big baddie in the first two Indiana Jones movies.
-Arnold and Bridgette were a couple during the making of this film and both regretted going their separate ways, after the film ended.
-Sven Ole Thorsen (from Conan 1&2) also appears in this film, as the Queens overly muscled bodyguard.
-The topless dancer was added because of the complete lack of nudity in the film.
Like Destroyer, this movie was aimed more towards a younger audience.
Had it been a hard "R" like the first Conan, they would have had to recast the prince.
Apparently they couldn’t get the rights to the name *Conan,* for this movie but, because there was (at least, as far as my research has been able to ascertain) a comic adventure in which *Conan* used the name *"Kalidor"* (though I couldn’t find confirmation of exactly _why_ he does it), they were able to use _that_ name instead.
How thick are those walls if the women can't hear all those horses trampling around? I mean one or two that are just chilling out might be overlooked, but a whole herd trampling around heavily like that??
Dang, Mr. Movies, I want to see you give a movie the full MST3K treatment! Also, Mrs. Movies, Surf Ninjas IS amazing.
15:51 - LITTLE PRINCE'S BODYGUARD FALKON is portrayed by Paul L. Smith. He also portrayed 'Glossu "Beast" Rabban' in David Lynch's 'Dune'.
‘He’s headed for a better place’ 😂😂 40:43
Ah, I was wondering if you'd watch this. Brace yourselves, folks.
I remember seeing this in the theater and noticing Brigitte Nielsen's smallpox vaccination scar in a scene and wondering why they couldn't have covered that up.
I loved how in Conan he is super in love with Sandahl Bergman the hot blonde thief. But in Red Sonja she plays the evil queen with a mask. Now that's good acting.
30:48 Mrs. movies' facial expression says it all.
Red Tonya LOL guys are so funny! I really love Ennio Morricone soundtracks too!
I finally figured out what I find so enjoyable about watching you two react to movies/tv shows --- You are like watching Mystery Science Theater but better!!!! :)
Keep up the great videos!
Thank you. That's a huge compliment! I grew up watching that show and it's one of our inspirations for this channel!
The kid (Ernie Reyes Jr.) isn't just of Ninja Turtles and Surf Ninjas fame. The same year Red Sonya released he was also starred (briefly but memorably) in Motown's one and only martial arts feature film The Last Dragon.
The Last Dragon is amazing. Right smack dab in the middle of the 80's (and oh boy can you tell). Mixed with Motown. A dash of bad acting. And a heavy dose of black exploitation martial artistry. Iconic mix. Cult classic. You two would get a kick out of it.
lol @ dap smack, are you sure you don't mean smack dab?
@@w1975bLol. Well at least it's funny. Thanks for the heads up.
The dj bit was great!🤣 and the notification & annoying voice interruption was adorable lol
08:00 No, it is not him. That is Ronald Lacey who played the Gestapo agent in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Pat Roach, the big guy Indy fights under the plane, is also in this film.
The Sword and the Sorcerer should be next
6:11 - 'NINJA STAR' THROWER?
Ikol, the character who threw the knife, is portrayed by Ronald Lacey. He also portrayed Major Arnold Toht in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. (the one who burned his palm on the artefact.)
Some people really HATE this movie. I suspended my disbelief a long time ago and grabbed the popcorn. It's not Laserblast or Highlander 2: The Quickening.
Why does everyone hate this? The acting is atrocious but it is hilarious. I love RS. I also laughed at Highlander 2. People have to lighten up about movies that are supposed to be bad.
I think the kid is also in The Last Dragon.
Sho’ nuff!
@@pathatfield2543 He's the badest mo fo this side of town.
One of The Rock's first movies called The Rundown has two things in common with Red Sonja. It has a cameo with Arnold Schwarzenegger in a club and later Ernie Reyes Jr fights the Rock in a jungle and he is fast , he grew up to be an awesome martial artist.
Until very recently, I never actually wondered if this movie and Conan share the same universe.
The Sword and The Sorcerer (1982) would definitely fit into this style of 80s fantasy!
I am sad to see that Red Sonja is the last of the sword and sorcery 80s films.
I hope you continue this series of movies eventually down the road. There are so many includibg medieval ones: Dragonslayer, Willow, Ladyhawk, Barbarians, and the aptly named the Sword and the Sorcerer.
The evil queen is the same actress who was Conan's woman in the first Conan movie. Blond hair killed by a snake arrow.
17:25 - BRYTAG - Portrayed by English actor/former wrestler Pat Roach. He appeared in the first three 'Indiana Jones' movies. Big Sherpa/German mechanic decapitated by plane propeller (Raiders. Two roles), mine overseer (Temple) & Gestapo Officer (Crusade). In Conan the Destroyer he portrayed Man Ape / Thoth-Amon, a Celtic Chieftan in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and is known for portraying Brian "Bomber" Busbridge in popular British tv series, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
With swords beyond a certain baseline strength mainly helps with endurance, so if it's a quick fight the biggest advantage a large man has might be reach (which is a big advantage). Unless he's inexperienced or stupid and swings wildly, in which case he has a good chance of being gutted. Or losing his fingers.
"Only women may touch it". I confess, I have a rule like that.
I think the main weakness in this film is that Arnold's line delivery is the best.
Loved the reply to " Who's moaning? ", ahhahaha! 😂😂
I would suggest that if you like this and haven't yet seen it ' Krull ' is an interesting movie to watch.
The conan series aren't too bad although of course, rather dated now.
I believe that he and Bridget got together having met in this movie although I could be wrong.
A great reaction guys.
Yes,please watch Krull.
@pathatfield2543 Such a great movie don't you think?
Ok, so the FX may not hold up too much today but a good fun adventure none the less.
OMG Krull is awesome! When I saw it in the movies on its release, I was underwhelmed. But then they had a video game version of it in the arcade (I was in my mid-teens when I saw it) at the Mall and I watched it on cable again and I loved it ever since! It definitely belongs on the YM&TM playlist!
@@08wolfeyes I don’t see a problem at all with the fax,and I thought the movie had a great sense of adventure about it.I think it would be great to see all these characters involved in a new story.
@jbjacobs9514 I didn't realise they made a video game of it then, I'll have to check that out!
Oh yes, I totally agree.
The ranking goes,
Beastmaster
The Destroyer
Red Sonya
I remember an old Amiga game called Barbarian that ripped the audio from this movie for the games sound effects.
Thanks for the awesome uploads!
That creature looks like some sort of armored automaton
both Arnold and Sandra were contracted to make 3 Conan movies. When Dino offer this move to Arnold he as that this fulfilled this contract for conan. As Arnold was no in high demand. this at this the reason the third conan was not made. The contract was done.
FUN FACT
this movie is considered
an alternate universe
CONAN
it's kinda like
HE MAN & SHE RA
how they exist in
both of their universes
Kid looks like Bolo Yeung lol.

Those DJ wizard edits were hilarious 😂
You do the safe movie, THEN you do the art movie. Then, sometimes you do a movie because you're friends with the director and he says you owe him a favor. I think Arnold owed somebody a favor on this one.
It kind of sounds like Arnold was conned into being in this... I believe they gave him a script where his role was small in order to get him in the movie, and then he showed up and they kept giving him more dialogue and screen time. Arnold at this time was still not quite big enough of a star to say NO to them and walk off the movie. He wanted to be a team player so remained in the production until they sent him home.
5:03 - OH NO! THE BRIDGE, IT IS OUT. (BRIGITTE, GEDDIT)
Who's the moaner? You later if you play your cards right, spat my drink out 😂😂😂
Mrs.Movies’ Conan canon makes sense to me.Also, humility ain’t the only thing that kid lacks(I’m talking about acting ability, but I’m sure you knew that).
That isn't Vizzini from Princess Bride...that's Toht from Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
Weird thing is I remember seeing Temple of Doom and this a year later and I kept thinking Reyes' Prince was capitalizing on TOD's Short Round!
Best female mullet ever!
4:33 I know you're just joking around, but I thought Mr. Movies actually sounded pretty good.
Speaking of barbarian movie theme songs with odd lyrics, you should watch "Yor: Hunter From The Future" starring Reb Brown. There's a hang gliding scene in it that is at once too stupid and too awesome to miss.
Oddly enough Conan, and Red Sonja are supposed to be set in the same universe...so why couldn't Arnold just be Conan? 😆
I think there were possible rights issues and also Arnold may have complained about play Conan again... Arnold didn't like the second movie that much.
@You, Me, & The Movies Y'know while many reactors have done Conan The Barbarian and Conan The Destroyer,
you definitely have to be one of the first reacting to Red Sonja, right f'ng on!
22:35 - DJ WIZARD - Choooon! What a mix.
12:25 In his scathing review of "Red Sonja" on his show "Siskel & Ebert at the Movies," film critic Gene Siskel laughed "There's statue of a Buddha that looks like it's... I can't say it. You'll have to watch the movie. NO!!! Don't watch the movie! It looks like its sitting on a toilet!!" He wasn't wrong.
39:04 "Ghedrin! Where are yooooou!"
Best line of the movie.
He's also a very entitled Prince. They don't even EAT their own food. They have servants move their mouths for them. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’ve read that Arnold only took on this to fulfill his 3 picture contract with producer Dino De Laurentiis after the disappointment of Conan the Destroyer. Now what’s funny about this film is that he considers it to be his worst film that he used to make his kids watch it as punishment whenever they got in trouble.
10:00 I reckon they were being crushed as the top closed, like the walls were coming in, that's what I always thought but could be wrong.
Hurt and in pain from the fall. Then, realizing they're gonna be sealed in the darkness until they suffocate or starve to death.
@@richardrobbins387yeah likely, because they'd probably show at least a bit of of the walls coming in to crush them otherwise. I guess it was just I thought I had when I was 10 and it stuck. Damn I was a sick kid lol.
Loved it when I was a little girl, still love it today.
When Mr. Movies says "Uh oh the bridge is out." It took me a second to remember hearing that line from True Lies
"The BRIDGE is OOOOUUUTT!!" 🤣🤣
I too loved thos as a kid!! But yeah always thought arnold was Conan in this until i was older and i was like wait he has a different name.. but thought sonja was so beautiful!
dang if red sonja and joe dirt mated their kids would have super mullets
love the soundtrack.. and the godess who protects sonja and gives her her strength is "Scathach" and not Mitra
"So it is true; only women may touch it."
Unless I'm really drunk, yeah.
as someone who had a nightmare of being buried alive, that scene where all the female warriors were trapped in the hole, that scene was deeply unnerving and sad, and still is....let me be slowly crushed by a rolling door over that any day, and since we don't see them again, even Arnold can't free them,
That kid is Awesome in The Last Dragon🤘🤘🤘
@35:08 Oh my goodness! I nearly choked laughing!
nice to see Rip find new love and a side gig as a movie reactor.
Thats not the "inconceivable" guy, he's the SS Officer from Raiders of the Lost Ark
They do look very similar, so it's an easy mistake to make. Ronald Lacey is a much more versatile actor, though.
The original manuscripts and books of Conan are in the little library in the tiny town of Coleman, TX.
You guys are crazy cool, you two make the best reviews 🙂
Glad you like them!
If I'm not mistaken (50 years since I read the books), Red Sonja was a pirate captain and Conan served as a buccaneer/1st mate...ahem. This was his 2nd love after Valeria. Speaking of Valeria (Sandahl Bergman), I was surprised, you didn't recognize her, as the evil queen with the dark hair. This story also had nothing to do with the original Conan books.
No, you're thinking of Belit. Robert E Howard had one story with Red Sonya of Rogatino. She was a support character in the story Shadow of the Vulture where she is a Polish mercenary fighting the Turks at the 1529 Siege of Vienna. Roy Thomas adapted that story into Conan the Barbarian #23 and turned the Slavic Sonya into Hyrkanian Sonja since they are rough geographic equivalents.
@@user-zx9jq4pv1w It's been a long time, I'm sure you are right, but I sure enjoyed the Conan stories and books by Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague De Camp and others that had followed Howard's style of Conan adult fantasy. The originals stories weren't comic books made for kids. Lots of sex and violence pulp fiction. Howard was a brilliant writer whose life was cut down too short, by his own hand. I also loved his Solomon Kane stories. The movie was good, too. Kull the Atlantean wasn't bad stories, but I hated the Kevin Sorbo film. LOL
At the time when I saw this as a kid, I was just happy to see a female barbarian!

“Hahaha bish! You will never get past my impenetrable gate of iro…”

“YES bish, no damn gate gonna help you escape my sword, THESE HANDS, and MY FOOT UP YO’ A$$! EN-GARDE BISH, EN GARDE!!!”😂😂
21:46 They better bring that flame thrower out again. A lot of those candles aren't lit anymore!
Are you guys going to watch The Sword and The Scorcer?
I wish they would as it is a LOT better than this flick.
I only ever saw that film once, as a kid. I could remember bits of it but never the title until a few years back, should watch it again really :)
The soundtrack to this film is far better than the movie deserves.
The "inconceivable" actor played Grand Nagus (forgot name) on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Wallace Shawn. He also does the voice of Rex in the Toy Story movies.
Only suffering will be reaped when one tries to wield the power of the mighty Loc-Nar!
At the time this movie was released ernie reyes jr was 13 years old.
The DJ bit killed me!
