    This is the video I have been working hard to bring you! It’s packed full of information, explanation and technique!
    NOTE: If you are a tight crocheter, the hat in the video will be too small if you are trying to make a petite adult hat...If this is the case, I recommend going up a size or two on your hook. (Also, below is the link for the written pattern if you need it.)
    This video tutorial series is in 2 parts. Part 2 shows how to make the pompom that I have pictured on the hat in the thumbnail. I hope that you will stick around to make the hat and then the pompom!
    WRITTEN PATTERN: www.etsy.com/listing/74490390...
    If you have any questions about this tutorial or need any help.. please feel free to ask questions below and then I will get back to you asap! If you can’t ask in the comments below, please feel free to contact me at fibertheory@yahoo.com.
    Enjoy this tutorial guys!

    Good evening, I like the way you take your time showing your viewers , the boarders of the hat before starting the next phase, by closing each end and securing it by crocheting a chain going all the way around the hat and changing needles sizes. I am learning a lot from your tutorial. The Bronx New York Stay Coronavirus Free.

      Hey Jazmine! This hat is written so you can change the size of the hooks to make it using the the same pattern. If it’s too small, just go up a size hook for the brim and up a size hook for the body. It should just even it out for you. Hope this helps!

    • @jazminerozen5040
      @jazminerozen5040 4 года назад

      Fiber Theory okay, I will try that. Thank you. I didn’t know if I needed to do more along the brim to make it longer, and then try to figure out how to count the stitches for starting the next step. I appreciate your help! Should I use bulkier yarn if I increase the hook size or does it not matter?

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  4 года назад

      Nope. Just stick to the size 4 weight and you’ll be good! I do this kind of thing all the time, especially making hats for my grandsons. They are a year apart in age, but their sizes are off by just enough . I just change hook sizes if I need to for the oldest, since he’s a bit bigger, and it works like a charm. You got this!!

  • @gabrieleambassador7289
    @gabrieleambassador7289 4 года назад +1

    I always connect the brim with slip stitches through both loops, and then turn the work over. That way the seam looks exactly like the other rims, can't even tell there is a seam.

    Love this! Just made me and my baby matching hats! It turned out so great! The only thing is that next time I will use a lighter yarn so it is easier to see haha. I used a navy blue and could barely see some of the stitches!

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  5 лет назад

      Alison, I am so glad you enjoyed this project and that you were able to get the pattern to work for both you and your little one! Did you use the larger size directions in the description of this video, or did you make the one in the video? And yes, I would agree with you that we will need at least half a skein of yarn for this hat. I always start out my actual projects with a full skein if I can to how the difference in the size of the skein once the hat is made. Next video will be showing how to make the scarf to go with this hat! Just gotta get over this cough from being sick back in December! Have a great day!!

    • @allisonmarie1400
      @allisonmarie1400 5 лет назад

      @@FiberTheory I made it just a tiny bit bigger so my husband and I could share a hat. (he has a big head haha). I believe I did 70 double crochet around the brim and just went from there. What worked for me was doing a multiple of 6 minus 2 to figure out how to make everything even. But it is perfect! I can roll it up to make it a little smaller for me, and my husband can keep it down if he wants to use it as well. I used a thick yarn so it is nice and warm.

    This is my first hat and your video is so detailed that I am able to follow along so well. Thank you. I do have a question though. I’m in the middle of making this hat and my 4 front post cables aren’t twisting as I go up like yours. The four post, once they got flat, stayed flat as they extend up. And yes I am doing the two post stitches currently in the back. Not sure what could be going wrong

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  7 месяцев назад

      Hi!! Well thank you so much for that! I appreciate that feedback! I’m glad you’re able to follow along!
      Unfortunately, unless I can see you make the cable, I won’t be able to tell you how to change it or what could be happening. If you’re doing as the video shows, it should be exact. There is a point where there’s a place in the cable that does flatten and become straight right before the next cable twist is made.. I’m not sure if that’s what you’re referring to though.
      Try this video and see if it helps at all. It’s a remake of my original and is a better fit for adults. The other is really better for people with smaller heads (roughly around ages 5-12). Also, this video might be better on explanation.
      I hope you can fix it. If you can send me a short video of you making the cable, you can send it to fibertheory@yahoo.com. I’ll be able to see it that way l, and maybe I can help.
      Here’s the other video.

    Also my husbands 80 year old, left handed grandmother taught me how to crochet 40 years ago and she taught me this exact way to hold the needle and thread. (I’m right handed) This is the first time I’ve seen anyone do it the same way on RUclips.

I have done a couple of updates so far, but haven’t gotten much feedback from them. I’d love to do monthly lives, but the last live I did, only reached one person. I won’t give up on this, I promise. Much of my time right now is taken up with work outside the home, so getting videos made has been hard. The plan is to have many more projects for you guys to follow, and hopefully I’ll be getting some patterns written up and available for sale online. Glad you were able to follow the video though!! That’s awesome! And yes, I have been told I sound like Ellen, a few times on here, but I don’t hear it. LOL. And yes, my grandma taught me to crochet this way as well. I hold the hook a couple different ways in different videos to give my hands a break from only one way. One day, when I finally learn how to use my new editing software, I will be making left handed videos as well.
      Have a wonderful day!!!

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  3 года назад

      Hi Dani! I have a written pattern for this hat as well if you fell that you would benefit from it. The iCard at the beginning of the video is the link to the pattern in my Etsy store. I also have a bigger version with a pattern in my shop. Here are the links if you need them.
      Otherwise, the pattern is made in a multiple of 6’s.. Those stitches are comprised of 4 for the cable and 2 bpdc’s. You would add or leave out what you needed. But yes, if measuring is best for you, go for it. 😇

My suggestion is to measure the person’s head (this goes for both men and women) around the crown in inches. Then, make enough rows until you come just one inch under the measurement (if the head circumference is 25”, the band should measure 24”) because there will be stretch. Measuring is always tour best friend.

      Vanida Peters I forgot to add that there is a written pattern in the description for a larger band... I forgot that I added that in there for you guys. I hope that helps.

    Hi Amanda thank you for the lovely hat pattern. I’ve made this hat before with your tutorial and it came out beautifully. I do believe it fit fine. (it was quite awhile ago.). I was wondering if this might be easier to make 60 rows rather than 58, and need to increase 2 stitches? Would that work out alright? For those that the hat is just a little tight it might give a tiny bit of extra room. Thanks in advance for your response and thank you again for the beautiful pattern.

      @@FiberTheory Thank you but I’m not certain I want to make it that much larger because I thought the last time I made this pattern the size was fine. My only question is whether working 60 rows to eliminate the 2 increases to bring the stitch count to 60 would work? Thank you.

    I don't know if you have the time to answer these two questions, but I hope so. I love the pattern. I have made other cable hats, and enjoy it. My questions are: Would this be a suitable size for a 6 year old? I know the average head circumference for that age is 17-19, I think. Second question, would this work to make a messy bun hat by just stopping the pattern as you get towards the top and leaving a hole? Thank you, are able to answer.

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  2 года назад

      Hi and thank you for your question! So the answer would be yes to both! I have made several of these hats for five-year-olds that I have known over the last several years. A couple of them can still wear these hats and they are both now nine years old. So definitely. If you want this hat for an adult size, I have a different video for that. You can actually go through my videos and you’ll see a thumbnail with a red hat that has cables on it. That’s the one you’d want for the adult size. Anyway thank you again for your comment and for your questions! Happy crocheting!

    the first row of cable, we worked stitches 3, 4, then 1, 2 for front post double crochet, but then for row 2 it looks like you are working 1, 2, 3, 4 in order.....is that correct?

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  4 года назад

      Yes. The cable is made by skipping the first group of cable posts to work the second group first...and then going back to work the first group. When you work the second row, you are no longer creating a crisscross, or twist to form the cable. So that means that you just work straight across the row making 6 fpdc’s around each cable post from right to left. This starts the building up process of the cables. Eventually you will do another cable row where you make the twists again, and that is what creates the look. Thanks for your question!!

    If I used a size 9mm N hook instead of a J hook how would this effect my pattern?

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  4 года назад +1

      RiahAriel That’s a really good question, and one I would like to explore. One thing I recommend is, if in doubt, try it out. So, what I would do is try it and see what happens with the stitching. If the spaces between stitches are too big, or if the pattern is too large, bring down the size of the hook to an M or even a K or L. But changing a hook doesn’t mean you can’t follow this video, it just means that the hat will be larger. If you want to make the band with the size hook indicated in the video, but change the size hook for the body, go for it! It’s fun to play around with sizing. ☺️

    I can't read patterns as I'm a visually learner but I have 60 dc plus a chain but when I do the cable the last one I'm left with 5 stitches and I've redone it and still left with 5 stitches for last cable. I can't see from video where I have gone wrong. The subtitles says an increase of 2 SC in the first stitch to start the SC row so I had a chain of 2 and then 2 SC in next stitch. Was that incorrect as I was following the subtitles as I'm deaf?

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  4 года назад

      Hi. I’m so sorry you’re having difficulty. I wish I could be right there to show you. It would make this so much easier, am I right?! ☺️ In the video, when I’m making the sc row... my chain 2 is considered my first sc of the row. Then I add one more sc into the same space just under the ch 2 so that I have 2 sc’s and my first increase. But, you want to make sure you only have 58 rows in your band, and keep very careful count of how many sc’s you have. You need 60 sc’s exactly. Doesn’t really matter where you make the increases, so long as you have those 2 extra sc’s. Then you make sure to only have 60 dc’s. As long you have that, the math should work out. Maybe we can schedule a tutor session on Messenger video chat, and I can walk you through it. Let me know if this helps, ok? I really want you to get this.☺️👍

    • @sarahr00r
      @sarahr00r 4 года назад

      @@FiberTheory hi. Yes I have exactly 58 rows and I have 60 SC plus the chain. So technically 61 I did a chain and 2sc in same space so 3 stitches is that where I've gone wrong? Because you do count the chain for the cables part ? whereas you didn't for the band.

    • @FiberTheory
      @FiberTheory  3 года назад

      Hi, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry I'm getting back to you so late. For thinner yarn, you would need to increase the amount in the chain and the amount of rows. If you can, I would measure the head circumference you are making the hat for first. Then, make the rows, measuring the flat panel as you go. You will want the finished product to be about 1" shorter than the circumference of the head, since the yarn will stretch. Then sew up the sides and top. Sew in your loose ends and you've got your hat. I hope this helps. :)
