One of the most important things to me about Thailand has to do with 'walking in new places,' and that is that I feel extremely safe *everywhere* that I go. There is nobody milling about in dark corners in large numbers. Nobody looking you up and down for an opportunity to exploit you. These people have things to do. The locals are always working at something. Cleaning, repairing etc. They are too busy to have time to mess with you - and they seem to have absolutely no desire to do so. In America, it served me well to be looking over my shoulder most of the time. Here in Thailand, I feel no need. And that brings me so much peace.
I never worry if I am walking around with money or something of value (not that I do that very often). I know I'll get where I am going w/o issue. In the cities I lived in back in The States, that was almost never the case. I found *one* small town there where I didn't see nefarious activity in plain sight. I will say that I have only spent a few days in Bangkok so far, so maybe it is different in parts of the city there, but I don't know. And I've heard no horror stories.

This burger and onion ring combo costs over twenty dollars included a 20 percent tip for the wait staff. I just ate one at Alaska Burger and Brew in Anchorage, Alaska. The same combo at the same restaurant used to be 11.99 plus couple dollars for tip two years ago. It just shows you how inflation hurts the pocketbook of ordinary Americans.

Recovering from a total loss is tricky. If you use an internet cafe (assuming you can pay) or someone loans you their computer, when you try to access sites, including say cloud storage, you will be doing so from an unknown device and you won't be able to receive 2FA. You can setup alternate trusted numbers to receive 2FA, but you won't have any way to contact the person to get the texted codes. I don't really have a good solution.

Great video! Question about the bug out money. You mentioned taking out about $100 or $200 and hanging on to it to get to the airport in case of an emergency. What do you do if you get to the airport and need to buy a ticket? Let's say their computers are shut down and you can't use your cc. Who carries $1000 extra to buy a plane ticket back to the States. Usually tickets to get from SE Asia to the States around that cost. What's your advice in that scenario? Inquiring minds want to know, just in case, heaven forbid this scenario pops up for me, you, or anyone else traveling. Take care, Tami.

      Great question
      Think of it this way
What if you lose your cards and atm card
What if your bank gets hacked
      There are so many variables
And, you can usually buy a ticket cash :-)

In the restaurants you pay mostly with card or with cash? Is it safe to use cards in restaurants in SE Asia?

Mostly cash as my ATM use is transaction fee free
I have a no foreign transaction fee Visa card though

If the credit card terminals don’t work how could you pay for your ticket out? Wouldn’t you also need enough cash for the taxi and the plane ticket?

    • @RetireandGo
      @RetireandGo  29 дней назад +2

      Yep both
A few hundred will get you to the airport and to another country
      You can buy tickets cash
It might be the only way in an electronic shut down or system hack

@@RetireandGo Travelled to North Korea from China-five years ago on a one week tour. Flew into Pyongyang from Beijing on the infamous Air Koryo...took the train out- only foreigner on the train, crossed back into China. Would highly recommend the trip even though it is highly staged. I believe the trip is off limits to Americans. Totally safe....as long as you play the game, bow to the great leader etc.

$200 in local currency won't buy a ticket home to the USA from anywhere in SE Asia. You need multiple backups, bank cards, credit cards, a fair amount of US dollars. Maybe an onward ticket. Usually it is easy to find someone who'll exchange dollars, maybe jewelers, gold merchants, hotel people. Ask around. But he's right, cash is king.
